[NTG-context] how to change current directory ?
Title: Samsung Enterprise Portal mySingle Greeting context users, Thank you for such a good tool. Here is my question regarding changing of current directory. I have quite a number of separate main.tex in different directories. Each main.tex is calling submain.tex in the same directory. Compilation of each main.tex in its own directory is fine. What I am trying to do is compiling all submain.tex into one pdf file with minimum change. To accomplish my objective, I made a master file and put “\input …\every\submain.tex”. By now, I assume you know what I am getting at. My objective is not going to get done. I have to change all \input commands inside each submain.tex to reflect the absolute path. I guess there should be one way or the other to change current-directory, so that make my job simple. It would be greatly appreciated if you can shed light on this. Thank you in advance. You can load file in subdirectories when you set the directory with \usepath[name] and \usesubpath[name], you have to replace “\input file” also with “\component file” (or “\usecomponent[file]”) otherwise context won’t like in the subdirectories. I stumbled across the same problem that was discussed earlier this
month: \type doesn't break, even if there are opportunities. I tried
to follow the suggestions given in that thread, but with no success:

Is there anything else I can do/setup to get such long verbatim lines
broken? I would also like an option for character-based line wraps;
i.e. it should (optionally; not in this particular case for example)
break a word even in the middle if necessary, and without hyphenation
mark. Especially in similar cases where I have a very very long
directory name, I wouldn't care if it gets broken the hard way.

[NTG-context] Simplefonts, latest beta and binoms
Hi list,
I have some troubles with the simplefonts module. The following worked
fine before (2011.02.25 22:03, need to add '\usemodule[newmat]'), but
doesn't anymore (2011.05.18 22:26).
Minimal example reproduced here. Whatever font I try, the output of
the parentheses is the same. Setting the math font doesn't help
either.

\setmainfont[Calluna]% could be Latin Modern Roman
%\setmathfont[Latin Modern Math]% as in t-simplefonts.tex

Do you use MkII or MkIV?
When i run your example with a recent installation and MkIV
i get the output you expect. You should also also set

Hi, MKIV seems to have a problem in hyphenating long finnish compound words in MKIV (2011.05.18 22:26). Here is a minimalist example (columns added to exaggerate the problem): \mainlanguage[fi] \language[fi] \starttext \startcolumns[n=3] kolmivaihekilowattituntimittari ympäristöliiketoiminta epäjärjestelmällisyydellistyttymättömyydellänsäkään järjestelmällisentelentelemättömyydellänsäkään \stopcolumns \stoptext Similarly with en-hyphenation and \input knuth, some of the lines stretch out in an ugly fashion. What am I doing wrong? I don't have these problems in LaTeX. P.S. The punctuation characters should be partially hung out in a justified paragraph (similar to what microtype package does on LaTeX). Wikipedia says ConTeXt has interfaces for handling microtypography but they don't seem as apparent and as easy as using microtype on LaTeX. The wiki article Protrusion#MkIV presents \definefontfeature but I find it counterintuitive that one has to use \definefontfeature[default][default][protrusion=quality,expansion=quality] \setupalign[hz,hanging] to enable the features. It is unclear if these lines switch the features on globally for all loaded fonts (for example ttf/otf ones defined with \starttypescript). IMHO these features should be enabled by default because they produce better typographic quality by default (which should be the preference), and could be switched off anyway if wanted. The less setup lines one has to add before \starttext to get high quality results the better. There is also \hyphenatedfilename which use the current font
unlike \filename which use the monospaced font.

If I don't use any font setup, then the result is correct. Isn't opentype
math setup used in both cases?

I'm struggling with quotation blocks and proper placing of citations… In an
ideal world I'd be striving for something like this:

This should be typeset immediately after the closing delimiter and well before

In the real world (and with a deadline approaching rapidly) I've tried two
approaches so far:
1. A hack dating back three years which bypasses the delimitedtext mechanism.

As can be seen, the neither versions have any specific adjustments done by
hand: both
only have the microtypographic features turned on. There is no comparison, the
pdfTeX
version looks superior: there are no rivers, all lines are justified to equal
length,
and the expansion and spacing are both acceptable.
(1) The 'spacing' options does not work and even gives an error in mkiv)
so remove that one. What version of context are you running? I've
already fotgotten about it but I think it was an experimental pdftesx
feature with side effects. In pdftex hz and protrusion is also somewhat
tricky as it can bleed from one font instance to another (due to
traditional tex's internal font sharing), although context takes some
precautions.
(2) But, more important: add \setuplayout[width=middle] to give context
a more similar opportunity to produce something acceptable. You're now
giving context a disadvantage of narrower columns.
(3) You can remove the \language as you already set \mainlanguage.
(4) In context protrusion and expansion is a font property and applying
it globally to all fonts (with some flag) will not happen. Actually, in
some situations you need to turn it on explicitly (imaging hanging
happening when you're doing a table).
I don't know what latex's default layout setup is but if you want to do
an experiment, you need to make sure that you use the same widths of
columns.

[NTG-context] query about referring to pdf attachments
Can one refer to PDF attachments as though they were local files? I'd like to treat the PDF as a kind of rudimentary filesystem. Whatever is attached to the PDF can be found under the root directory of the PDF. One could then place hyperlinks to these files which, when followed, cause an attachment to be opened (say, a music player, a web browser, etc.). Ideally, one would be able to do something like this: \useattachment[my-video][my-video.mpg] \attachment[my-video] \useURL[my-video-url][file:///my-video.mpg][][Awesome Video] \starttext Follow the link to \from[my-video-url]! \stoptext The file:///my-video.mpg URI is a guess; the idea is to somehow refer to a file placed in the PDF's filesystem. Hi all, how would I make sure that \ss always uses one set of font features while \rm always uses the default feature set? Do I need to specify this in the typescript file? I followed all these steps to install MkIV on a Mac and to run it with either Smultron or TexShop : http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals/Mac_Installation However it works fine with Smultron (but I am more used to TexShop to run TeX files), with TexShop I get : MTXrun | unknown script 'context.lua' or 'mtx-context.lua' Even after running the following command line : luatools --generate it doesn't help at all. [NTG-context] getmarking and empty chapter number
Hi all,
I'm just trying to wrap my mind around why the following doesn't work as I
expect:

When this encounters an unnumbered \startchapter (say in the front matter) then
this \doifsomething should detect this void and in particular not insert the
\enskip. For some reason the space ends up in the PDF nevertheless :-(
Any ideas?

[NTG-context] alternating items in an itemization
I'd like to define an itemization that has two kinds of items,
representing a dialogue between two people. (One could imagine
extending this to more than two.) I'd like to have something like this:

\mary Because I wasn't hungry. I was too distraught at what had
happened the previous night.

The \john and \mary parts would each be their own paragaphs. The
paragraphs would be colored with different text backgrounds, and joined
up with one another (that is, the blocks of text representing the
paragraphs for the different speakers would be adjacent to one another).
I've tried doing this using \defineparagraphs, \defineframedtext, and
\defineenumerations, but I can't quite get the right effect;

\definetextbackground[mary-background][backgroundcolor=red]
\definestartstop[dialogue]

Putting
this before the above \start/stopdialogue snippet (suitably enclosed in
\start/stoptext) gives me an error about a missing }; I suppose I'm
overlooking something.
An enumeration-based solution would be along these lines:

I can't figure out how to get the textbackgrounds to work here, and
there's a bullet symbol at the beginning of every dialogue paragraph,
which I'd rather get rid of (and I don't want the indent between the
bullet and the beginning of the text).
A framed-text solution starts to come close:
\defineframedtext[john][frame=off,background=color,backgroundcolor=magenta]
\defineframedtext[mary][frame=off,background=color,backgroundcolor=lightred]
But then the boxed paragraphs are separated from each other by some
vertical whitespace.
Another idea would be to use tables, but I haven't explored that yet.
Any suggestions for how to render dialogues as above in ConTeXt?

I believe that one advantage is adding a level of indirection for journal naming: you can have, for example, one definition file which defines JISN as ‘Journal of Inconveniently Sesquepedalian Nomenclature’, and another defining it as ‘J. Inc. Ses. Nom.’, and switch between different definition files according to publisher requirements, space restrictions, and so on. Perhaps Biber (http://biblatex-biber.sourceforge.net/) could fill the void. It supports Unicode, is BibTeX compatible and has planned SQL and XML support in the future. I'm happy as long as the next de facto scientific standard for references will be open source and not something as horrible as RefWorks. You do sound a bit impatient, but the answer is: bibtex is a beast, but bibliographies is such an endless topic, there are so many permutations and possibilities and options that replacing bibtex is easier said than done. bibtex gets the job done, most of the time, and I've always heard that there will be a next big thing which will replace bibtex, but it never quite happened. zotero's approach (a completely untransparent, complex and hence fragile sql database) is a lot worse than bibtex. As to the question why strings: Pontus's answer named one important aspect. I have several .bib files which contain nothing but string definitions: one with abbreviated, one with full journal titles; one with English strings (reprint, Munich) and one with the German equivalent (Nachdruck, München). Including the right file(s) will then provide the desired output. [NTG-context] TOC : Chapter title under its number (separate lines)
Hi,
Is there a simple way to obtain the following result in the table of content :

(the chapter title underneath its number and left aligned, just like everything
else)
The following code used to do the job with MkII but it doesn't anymore with
MkIV :

When this encounters an unnumbered \startchapter (say in the front

Hi, When exporting to xml (with \setupbackend[export=yes]), the non-breakable space (~) gets exported to regular space 0x32. Shouldn't it rather be exported to 0x00A0? However you cannot buy 32-bit hardware any more and you cannot choose to install a 32-bit system on 64-bit hardware (unless you install ancient OS which nobody does and which might not even work due to lack of drivers). So anyone who has bought a mac after Snow Leopard has been released (late 2009?) has 64-bit Mac OS X.
