[NTG-context] incorrect size of the font bounding box with MkIV

2010-03-24 Thread Yanrui Li
Hi Hans,

I tried to get the boundry of Chinese punctuation in the scrp-cjk.lua file.
Such as the bounding box information of Chinese comma in the
AdobeSongStd-Light.otf font:

bbox[1] = 36,
bbox[2] = -78,
bbox[3] = 963,
bbox[4] = 833

However I got the following result with luatex + plain

bbox[1] = 171,
bbox[2] = -58,
bbox[3] = 370,
bbox[4] = 240

The latter is right.

What's the reason for it?

 Hi,

 Now it seems that we have not allowed to register the callback functions
 since beta 2010.02.18.

 For example:

 \startluacode

 local old_pre_linebreak_filter = callback.find ('pre_linebreak_filter')

 local function my_pre_linebreak_filter (head, groupcode)
 if old_pre_linebreak_filter then
 old_pre_linebreak_filter (head, groupcode)

 print ('This is my pre_linebreak_callback')
 return true
 end

 callback.register ('pre_linebreak_filter', my_pre_linebreak_filter)

I see. The 'pre_linebreak_filter' callback function is frozen.

[NTG-context] Is there the length of article title limited in bibliography with MkIV for Chinese?

2010-01-18 Thread Yanrui Li
Hi all,

If the .bib file includes a article with Chinese title, I found the
article's length should be equal or less than 22 characters. Once the length
is over 22 characters, the compile process will hang.

The following is an example:

%% filename: test.tex, it depends on the AdobeSongStd-Light.otf font.

\starttypescript[serif][zhfont]
\definefontsynonym[Serif][name:adobesongstd]
\definefontsynonym[SerifItalic][name:adobesongstd]
\stoptypescript

\starttypescript[myfonts]
\definetypeface[myfonts][rm][serif][zhfont]
\stoptypescript

\usetypescript[myfonts]
\setupbodyfont[myfonts,rm,11pt]

\setupbibtex[database=ref]

\starttext

测试\cite[测试]。

\placepublications

\stoptext

%% filename: ref.bib

@book{测试,
  title = {〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二},
  author= {一二三},
  publisher = {四五六},
  year  = {2000},
}

After compiling the above test.tex, I can get the following test.bbl file:

\setuppublicationlist[samplesize={一00},totalnumber=1]

\startpublication[k=测试,t=book,
a={{一二三}},y=2000,
n=1,s=一00]
\author[]{}[]{}{一二三}
\pubyear{2000}
\title{〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二}
\pubname{四五六}
\stoppublication

If I modify the ref.bib file, for example I add one Chinese character in the
title field:

%% filename: ref.bib

@book{测试,
  title = {〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二三},
  author= {一二三},
  publisher = {四五六},
  year  = {2000},
}

When I compile the test.tex again, the compiling process stops here:

publications: loading database from test.bbl
(test.bbl
! String contains an invalid utf-8 sequence.
l.8 ...九〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二
  %
?

I'm sure that all texts in my files are encoded with utf-8.

 Bibtex is stupid enough to attempt to break this title over two
 lines in its output, and it does so based on *bytes*, not characters.
 The result is a linebreak in the middle of an utf sequence, which
 is invalid. Please try this:

   title = {{〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二}},

It doesn't work.

 and if that doesn't work (but it should), maybe this will:

   title = {〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二%
三四五六七八九〇一二},

It results the output including %. But I find

  title = {〇一二三四五六七八九〇一二
   三四五六七八九〇一二三},

can work :)

Thanks for your reminder.

[NTG-context] Problem with the 'scrp-cjk.lua'

2009-11-29 Thread Yanrui Li
Hi Hans,

In the *hanzi* part of scrp-cjk.lua, there is:

local injectors = { -- [previous] [current]
... ... ...
full_width_close = {
... ... ...
chinese  = nobreak_shrink_break_stretch,
... ... ...

This causes that lines can not be broken after some Chinese punctuations in
'full_width_close' category. I think it should be:

local injectors = { -- [previous] [current]
... ... ...
full_width_close = {
... ... ...
chinese  = stretch_break,
... ... ...

The same problem also arises here:

local injectors = { -- [previous] [current]
... ... ...
half_width_close = {
... ... ...
chinese  = nobreak_shrink_break_stretch,
... ... ...

It seems like it should be:

local injectors = { -- [previous] [current]
... ... ...
full_width_close = {
... ... ...
chinese  = stretch_break,
... ... ...

Re: [NTG-context] new beta

2009-11-27 Thread Yanrui Li
2009/11/28 Hans Hagen pra...@wxs.nl

 Hi,

 i uploaded a beta with a few fixes.

 i also replaced the mtxrun.cmd etc file by executables (windows stubs
 only);

 on tex live we have a call chain: *.exe - *.cmd|bat - whatever and we
 don't want that many calls (and files) so i copied the regular runner and
 patched it into a mtxrun (.exe)

 this means that users who run mtxrun from an editor (default scite setup)
 should change mtxrun.cmd into mtxrun.exe (the same is true for luatools,
 texexec and texmfstart, where the later is actually replaced by mxrun)

 (btw, if you want a stub to for instance mtxrun --script font then you
 can just copy mtxrun.exe to mtx-fonts.exe and have a more direct call

For linux x86 users, they still have to update luatex from 0.44 to 0.45 (or
0.46) manually with this latest minimals.

 Hi Hans, all,

 the two latest betas have trouble loading fonts from my own typescripts. All
 errors point to the same line in font-syn.lua. I don't have a minimal

 box:

 mtxrun --script fonts --list --pattern=*gentium*
 ...text/tex/texmf-context/tex/context/base/font-syn.lua:706: bad argument #1
 to 'next' (table expected, got nil)

 Any pointers?

 1. delete the luatex cache
 2. luatools --selfupdate

 3. luatools --generate

I did so and solved this problem. However I can not use Chinese OTF
fonts such as 'AdobeSongStd-Light.otf', because luatex need very very
large memory to load it in the stage of *enhancing* . This is a test

Sorry for my noice. The problem still exists in the latest beta

previous one completely. The problem just arise in loading Chinese OTF

[NTG-context] Problem with fontdata.cache being set to no in font-def.lua

2009-06-17 Thread Yanrui Li
Hi Hans,

I am testing comperssion of Chinese punctuations according
boundingbox. But I found that the fontdata.cache in font-def.lua is
set to no, so I can't get the boundingbox information of those
punctuation glyphs in my module. I want to know why set to no as
default. Is it for efficiency?

 bbinfo sits in the shared descriptions (that travel with each font) and as
 such is unrelated to the cache

 the cache option mentioned there is not meant for using, just for debugging
 (i.e. for myself)

I have printed the the shared descriptions with the following code fragment:

function f4zhcn.pre_linebreak_filter (head, groupcode)
   for t in node.traverse(head) do
  if is_cjk_ideo (t) then
 texio.write_nl ('*** CJK Ideo ***')
  elseif is_cjk_puncts (t) then
 texio.write_nl ('*** CJK Punct ***')
 for k in pairs(font.fonts[t.font]) do
texio.write_nl (k)
 end
  end
   end
   return true
end

With fontdata.cache = 'no', I just got:

*** CJK Punct ***
checksum
direction
MathConstants
encodingbytes
filename
format
designsize
area
type
tounicode
characters
embedding
parameters
name
extend
used
slant
fullname
size

Only with fontdata.cache = 'yes', I can get:

 *** CJK Punct ***
direction
boundarychar_label
marks
encodingbytes
factor
filename
descriptions
... ...

 the no tells luatex not to keep a reference to the table it gets passed
 and when you then use font.fonts it will recreate a table from the data at

 at the lua end you can use fonts.ids[id] instead and then you will get a
 descriptions (and leave the fontdata.cache key untouched unless you want to
 waste memory and runtime)

Ok, I see. many thanks!

 ps. i will look into this bbox based compensation once we have a proper set
 of guaranteed correct standard cjk fonts in tex live and i've figured out a
 robust way to deal with it; i had code for it but threw it away out when i
 ran into conflicts with opentype features that do similar things and fonts
 that were inconsistent

I am just playing with luatex and learning it. Then I want to do
something for Chinese temporarily with Wolfgang's simplefonts module
because I need it for some documents of mine now.

Is there a way to provide some key parameters to users and allow them
to adjust these parameters in tex for the specific cjk fonts? For
Chinese fonts (because I just understand Chinese) I don't think those
opentype features is very useful. In general situation, we just need:

1. insert glue between Chinese glyph nodes for linebreak
2. reduce the spaces between Chinese punctuations
3. process protruding of punctuations which appear in margin.

If users can set up some parameters to control these features
according specific situation, maybe we do not need correct standard
CJK fonts. What I mean is that we can make an abstract layer for CJK
fonts. I don't know wether your plan is that or not.

 this is because a cidmap is needed and the kpse that you use does not have
 it; upcoming versions of kpse (and luatex's kpse lib) will support it given
 that you also adapted your texmf.cnf accordingly then

I see. Thanks.

 so a bit patience is needed

Yes. I prepared for it because Yue had told me those calculations in
OTF font processing of luatex.
I need to load it only for the experiments of Chinese punctuation
compression in the bbox way.

 We can start a fork of scrp-* on code.google.com/p/ctex-kit,
 making a usable version, and later ask Hans to merge back into ConTeXt.

 it all depends how scrp evolves as it has to deal with more issues too; i
 will not merge code that i don't fully understand but experimenting does not
 hurt; one problem with script stuff is that (in the future) it might be
 closely cooperate with other mechanisms of context (it used to be part of
 the font analyser, now it's plugged in elsewhere but even that might change,
 for instance when in upcoming versions of luatex we have a bit more control)

What I have done is only experiment. I will try my best to follow the
evolves of the
 scrp-* files until that day, when MkIV support Chinese typesetting well, comes.
I have to introduce MkIV to Chinese users and make them paying close attention
to it in this way.

 also, some issues will be dealt with in other code in the future (i simply
 cannot touch all code at the same time) so don't expect mkiv to be finished
 before 2012 (when luatex 1 is ready); it's a stepwise process and it's only
 driven by context (i.e. generic code only shows up when context code works
 okay);

 anyhow, as long as nobody tells me what the expected behaviour is, with test
 code etc i can;t fix anything; one complication (e.g. with chinese) is that
 over the last few year is got conflicting requests; now, if there are
 multiple ways to deal with it, then i can implement variants but only if i
 know the exact conventions (with proper names for them)

Yes. It is a key reson that we are still not familiar with MkIV well
now. But with
in-depth understanding of MkIV, maybe many suggestions will be post to you.
Of course these suggestions should be collected according actual demands by
Chinese TeX users group.

 for instance when i found out that cjk-korean is not the same as cjk-chinese
 (one of them) i split the machinery so we're not talking cjk here, but very
 specific needs; after the split i never tested chinese (no samples) and no
 one else propbably did that either

 keep in mind that context is not meant for one language but for many and
 that when possible mechanisms need to be able to used mixed; there will
 never be exclusive solutions for one languages unless it's a very
 specialized module

 anyhow, we can best follow the same route as with other language / script
 support

 - we need consistent specs, or maybe multiple specs as variants
 - as well as test files for each such case
 - and then we can look into what can be improved or added

I think that maybe this needs a very long time until CJK users know what each
other needs. But three years should be enough :)

 Yes (we were bored during some Polish talks at BachoTeX).

 The reason for setuptex setting all those variables in the old days
 was to override tetex's environmental variables, but in principle this
 is not needed at all unless tetex is present on computer. The reason
 for removing them again was to make sure that Hans' scripts work
 properly even when no environmental variable is set (which will be the
 case on TeX Live for example).

 The only variable change that's really needed is fixing PATH, but it's
 so convenient to be able to run
    . /path/to/setuptex
 instead of typing the long
    export PATH=/path/to/minimals/bin:$PATH

 We nevertheless left two or three variables since ConTeXt didn't yet
 work properly without them, but we'll remove those as well.

 If anyone uses minimals on tetex, we can create an additional file
 again that would enable complete isolation.

 We didn't clean up the windows script yet as it would need some more
 testing (and we had enough problem by minimals not running at all on
 unix), but that's still on TODO list ...

 We also silently added TEXMFHOME (while Hans was not watching), but
 maybe we need to change the exact path.

 If you have any particular question or request about that, let us know.

Thanks for your explanation. Now I see.

I have no questions for these, only I have to modify instruction of these
variables in the tutorial which I wrote for Chinese users :)

MkIV have not support Chinese typesetting now, so I modified
scrp-ini.lua and scrp-cjk.lua for compression of Chinese punctuations.
In addition, I wrote a lua program which can solve the

\chapter{Lines and Planes}

Next, we cover\footnote{CAGD} the basics of lines and planes\footnote{CAGD}.

However, I can get expected result with

If I set start=1, footnotes number will begin with 2 but not 1.

What's wrong with it?

Re: [NTG-context] Page background color. Does not cover the entire page.

2009-04-17 Thread Yanrui Li
2009/4/17 Curiouslearn curiousle...@gmail.com:
 Hi,
 I created the attached PDF file using ConTeXt. As you can see I have a green
 background, which covers the whole page. However, when I took it to the
 printer today and he printed two copies for me, there was some white space
 left at four ends. The amount of space above, below, to the left and to the
 right was different. Here is my preamble. Can you suggest what I can do so
 that the whole page has the chosen green background color.
 Thanks very much.

Hi, Curiouslearn,

Generally speaking, many printers can't print a page without white
spaces about 3mm unless you have a marginless printer.

Re: [NTG-context] new beta

2009-04-17 Thread Yanrui Li
2009/4/18 Wei-Wei Guo wwgu...@gmail.com:
 Hi Hans,

 Here is the minimal examples.

 1. The figure list and table list do not show caption titles and dots.
   Only label number and page number appear there, such as:

   1 Should have a caption title here   Should have dots here  13

   Example:
            \starttext

            \completelistoftables

            \placetable[here][example-table]{\LaTeX}
            \starttable[|l|l|]
              \NC longtable      \NC LONG TABLE \NC \AR
              \NC booktabs       \NC BOOKTABS \NC \AR
            \stoptable

            \stoptext

 2. \writebetweenlist has no effect.

   Example:
            \starttext

            \completecontent
            \writebetweenlist[section]{Text}

            \section{Section 1}
            \input knuth

            \stoptext

 3. Footnote number has a weird triangle mark beside, like 1▲.

   Example:
           I cannot reproduce the problem with default settings. Maybe it's
           a problem related with Chinese. What Chinese fonts do you have?
           Can I use Yanrui Li's zhfonts.tex in my examples?

Hi, Wei-Wei,

I tested your examples. The first example can work here.
With AdobeSongStd-Light font, the third one can also work.
You can post your example with zhfonts.tex which use
Adobe Song and Kai fonts. I think that Hans have these fonts.

 Hi Yanrui,

 I tested your code on Mac OS X 10.5.6 with the latest beta (ConTeXt  ver:
 2009.04.15 12:15 MKIV  fmt: 2009.4.15  int: english/english): I don't see
 the problem you mention, but the interaction is not activated (while with
 mkii everything is as expected). Here is the code I tested:

 \setuppapersize[S6][S6]
 \setupinteraction
  [state=start,focus=standard]
 \starttext
 \placecontent
 \page
 \chapter{Test}
 \input knuth
 \stoptext

 So there is a bug with mkiv and \setupinteraction, with or without the
 option on focus=standard.

 Best regards: OK

[NTG-context] Why can not rm or rmtf fonts be set up by \definebodyfont macro?

2009-04-05 Thread Yanrui Li
These days I have been reading co-fonts.pdf because I plan to write
a document about
ConTeXt MkIV for our Chinese users. When I reached the part of
Defining body fonts,
for testing bodyfont model, I made an example as following:

\definefontsynonym[Song][AdobeSongStd-Light]
\definefontsynonym[Hei][AdobeHeitiStd-Regular]
\definefontsynonym[FangSong][AdobeFangsongStd-Regular]
\definefontsynonym[Kai][AdobeKaitiStd-Regular]

\definebodyfont[12pt][rm]
   [tf=Song,
 bf=Hei sa 1,
 it=Kai sa 1,
 sl=FangSong sa 1]

\setscript[hanzi]
\setupbodyfont[rm,12pt]

\starttext

今时之人不然也,以酒为浆,以妄为常,
{\bf 醉以入房,以欲竭其精,以耗散其真},
{\it 不知持满,不时御神},
{\sl 务快其心,逆于生乐,起居无节,故半百而衰也}。

\stoptext

I found that rmtf font is not AdobeSongStd-Light, which is always
LMRoman12-Regular.
However, bf, it and sl fonts all are right.

I looked over the log file and saw some messages as following:

fonts : preloading latin modern fonts
bodyfont : 12pt rm is loaded

I want to know why I can not override the preloading rm font.

Thanks.

2009-03-19 Thread Yanrui Li
2009/3/17 Hans Hagen pra...@wxs.nl:
 Hi,

 In the process of a major cleanup and code split I uploaded a beta. Some
 important changes are:

 - initialization code is ready for upcoming luatex
 - language files have been cleaned up
 - core-table stuff is renamed to tabl-table stuff
 - several changes in file names and splits of files
 - for those using helpers, in mkiv now syst-aux is the place to look
 - some non used files removed
 - some speedup of helper macros (only in mkiv)

 On Taco and my machine test docs come out right but there might be problems
 left (no tricky new things so solvable fast).

The tilde sign is not right, eg:

\starttext

$\tilde{X}$

\stoptext

I got the result as shown in attachment.

 Hi,

 As prelude to LuaTeX 0.40 there is now a beta 0.35. I uploaded a context
 beta that matches this version. The most important move is that we now have
 a new math subsystem. (Specially for Mojca: iwona seems to work ok). Apart
 from bringin unicode math this also gives a better performance. (Some info
 about what is involved can be found in mk.pdf on the website).

 There might be ommisions so when you run into one, just let us know.

Hi,

Maybe there are some bugs in scrp-ini.lua and scrp-cjk.lua as follows:

1. In scrp-ini.lua, some flags of punctuations in the definition of
hash are replaced by
chinese flags, for example:

local hash = {
... ...
[0xFF0C] = full_width_close, -- ,
... ...
}
... ...
for i=0x0FF00,0x0FFEF do hash[i] = chinese end
... ...

2. In scrp-cjk.lua, it seems that insert_node_before in some break
shrink  stretch functions
should be insert_node_after, for example:

local function nobreak_stretch(head,current)
insert_node_before(head,current,make_penalty_node(1))
insert_node_before(head,current,make_glue_node(0,inter_char_stretch,0))
end

In addition, I found Chinese punctuations compression in this beta.
Will these features be provided in future beta?

 end

 we only insert nodes before, so in that case you need to look at another
 combination; so, like

 class_a [insert] class_b

 is triggered only once, by the table entry

 [class a] = { class_b = ... }

Thanks for your explanation, I see.

There are some Chinese punctuations,
such as “, (fullwidth comma), ! (fullwidth exclamation mark) and so on,
which are considered to be chinese but not full_width_close by
scrp-cjk.lua.
Is this deliberately doing?

 could be useful for migration from latex to context having such file that

The attachment with this mail is the PDF file which I got by compiling

I noticed that the font-ini.mkiv was modified in newest beta (because
I manage the beta with git in my machine). Maybe the problem is

Hi,

Wolfgang have told me about using code such as ``spaceskip .25em plus
.25em\relax'' to adjust spaces in Chinese chacracters. You can try it
for your problem.

Sorry, I made a mistake. It should be ``\spaceskip .25em plus .25em\relax''.

[NTG-context] Maybe there is a bug in cross references with latest beta

2008-11-07 Thread Yanrui Li
Hi,

The \in[ref] command is regarded as a mathematical symbol by the
latest beta. There is a simple example as follows:

\starttext

\chapter[test]{TEST}

\in{Chapter}[test]

\stoptext

The output of it is attached in the mail.

 Oh, btw, Yanrui Li also has a problem concerning the space between
 chinese and english (different space skips when use different chinese
 fonts). He is also in the list so I think it is better to leave to him
 to describe the problem.

I have ever report the problem in the mail,
http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2008/035084.html, with an
example for test. Wolfgang gave me a temporary solution which is
\spaceskip .25em plus .25em \relax. But it can only works in
bodyfont. To make the text appeared in chapter or title display
normally, I had to do as follows:

\def\WordSkip{\spaceskip .25em plus .25em \relax}
\setuphead[chapter][textcommand=\WordSkip]

[NTG-context] Fails to load certain Chinese fonts

2008-10-06 Thread Yanrui Li
Hi,

In MkIV of last beta version (2008.10.03 23:45), when I was loading
certain Chinese fonts such as AdobeSongStd-Light or SimSun, LuaTeX
happened to be interrupted.

As the following example:

\definefontfeature
  [zh][mode=node,script=hang,lang=zhs]
\definefontsynonym
  [Song][name:AdobeSongStd-Light][features=zh]
\definefont[myfont][Song at 12pt]

\starttext
\myfont
中文~English~之间的间隔\par
中文\;English\;之间的间隔
\stoptext

I got such informations of error:

load otf | loading: /usr/share/fonts/adobe/AdobeSongStd-Light.otf
load otf | warning: Bad call to gww_iconv_open, neither arg is UCS4
(EUC-CN-UTF-8)

load otf | warning: Bad call to gww_iconv_open, neither arg is UCS4

Now, I can't compile any Chinese document using MkIV.

Re: [NTG-context] Fails to load certain Chinese fonts (Yanrui Li)

2008-10-06 Thread Yanrui Li
These problems which include lousy code of certain Chinese fonts in
pdf that is generated by MkIV, seem to connect with LuaTeX.

From revision 1525 to 1535, LuaTeX can always work very well except
text of using SimSun font is lousy code in pdf.

After cleaning $TEXMFCACHE, I compiled revision 1540 of LuaTeX and
used it, and then I encountered fails to load almost Chinese fonts.
However, if I don't clean $TEXMFCACHE generated by revision 1535 of
LuaTeX and use revision 1541, there is no any problem.

[NTG-context] A problem in fallback fonts of MkIV

2008-10-01 Thread Yanrui Li
Hi, Hans:

When I used AdobeSongStd-Light as my main font and used
LMRoman10-Regular as the fallback font, I found that the spaces
between Chinese characters and English words are perfect, for example:

\definefontfeature
  [zh][mode=node,script=hang,lang=zhs]
\definefontsynonym
  [zhserif][name:AdobeSongStd-Light][features=zh]
\definefontfallback
  [westernserif]
  [name:LMRoman10-Regular][0x-0x0400][force=yes]
\definefontsynonym
  [song][zhserif][fallbacks=westernserif]
\definefont[myfont][song at 12pt]

\starttext
\myfont
中文 English 之间的间隔\par
中文~English~之间的间隔\par
中文\;English\;之间的间隔
\stoptext

But, when I used SimSun instead of AdobeSongStd-Light, the spaces
between Chinese characters and English words became larger and ugly.
In previous example, spaces in the first two lines of text are larger
than those in the third one, even the spaces between English words
also become larger. I remerbered what you said, the fallback fonts can
be independent of the main font. However, I think the spaces between
the words are releated to the main font.

Would you give me a method for solving this problem? The pdf files
used as comparison are attached to in the mail and you can do a
comparative analysis.

Thanks.

[NTG-context] MKIV Chinese and English typesetting

2008-03-25 Thread Yanrui Li
Dear Hans and other friends:

I am a Chinese user of ConTeXt. Recently, I tried ConTeXt MkIV and
test its Chinese typesetting. I am very glad to see MkIV can access
my linux OS TTFOTF fonts and give a good face of my article about
lines breaking. But on the bilingual typesetting, such as Chinese
sentences and English words appearance in a article at the same time ,
I found there are no good methods to solve the problem of setting
fonts for them respectively. Now I had to handle it in this way:

\definefontfeature[chinese]
 [mode=node,script=hang,lang=zhs]
 \definefontsynonym[songti]
 [name:simsun]
 [features=chinese]

 \definefontsynonym[Serif][songti]
 \definetypeface[song][rm][serif][songti]
 \setupbodyfont[song,12pt,rm]

 \font\enfont=name:msyh
 \def\en#1{%
 \,\bgroup\enfont #1\egroup\,%
 }

 \starttext
 我用英文进行\en{Hello World}测试。
 \stoptext

I am eager to see full support for chinese and other Asian languages
in ConTeXt MkIV.

I am grateful to the developers. Thank you for your time and effort
for continuous contributions!
