The problem is a check in the section command which fails when the character

Hi,

1. Try to make shorter example because your example contains too much
stuff for a minimal example.

2. You forgot \starttext in your example.

3. Your fonts don't contain greek letters which explains the missing
counter in the PDF. Did you check if the fallback fonts are loaded.

That seems to work. I don't have the ability to directly examine the
pdf's tags table, but the document appears to read
correctly. Sections/subsections/paragraphs are identified. The subsection
is inline with the following paragraph. I'm not sure what are the

construction for the second paragraph in the subsection.

Hello everyone,

Thanks to all who helped me better understand the issues surrounding my
question. The document style I am following requires that the
first three headings are included in the table of contents. Headings
one and two are easy, as they stand on lines by themself. Heading three
must be aligned with the left margin in bold and followed by a period.
The rest of the paragraph or paragraphs folllow.

This style makes sense visually, bold text at the margin represents a
change in topic. less so when reading or editing with audio output (My
computer does not have a monitor attached.) Using good sectioning
allows one to fold the document for navigation and organization.
Consider how Org-mode in Emacs works as an analogue. I started thinking
that life would be easier if heading level 3 sections could be both
structural, for navigation, and visual, inline with their first
paragraph.

This idea holds true both in source text and in the pdf output.
Properly tagged pdf documents allow one to jump by structural elements
(heading to heading, paragraph to paragraph. In a perfect world one
could have it both ways: a structural element like a section, but placed
inline as though it were just another layout token. The audio using
tagged structure indicates a topic change, while those using their eyes
just see the bold text.

Hopefully this short explanation adequately describes my reason for
addressing the list.

The inline heading in your example doesn’t work because \startparagraph
forces the end of a paragraph for the preceding text.

As you want only tags for the content of your paragraph you can enclose
your text in \bpar … \epar instead of \startparagraph … \stopparagraph.

Hi Todd,

this will give the output you like:

\setuppapersize[letter]
\setuptagging[state=start]
\setuphead[subsection][style=\bf, number=no, commandafter={.~},
 textdistance=0cm, alternative=text]
\starttext

Add a sample, otherwise we might speculate about what you’re aiming at.

Tagging PDFs the way you seem to be trying might be impossible. Here is
my sample:

\setuppapersize[letter]
\setuptagging[state=start]
\starttext
\startsubsection[title=First Subsection]
\startparagraph a\stopparagraph
\startparagraph b\stopparagraph
\startparagraph c\stopparagraph
\stopsubsection
\stoptext

Both paragraphs and headings are block elements (I have just checked it
at
https://wwwimages2.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/pdf/pdfs/PDF32000_2008.pdf#page=585).
Block elements cannot contain other block elements inside.

Displaying block elements as inline elements, if not contradictory,
might be misleading, at least.

This is an issue about text structure. We speak of block elements
because they have vertical space between them (even if set to none).

It seems that H3 should be a block element, not an inline element inside
P (according to most XML implementations, I’d say).

Why do you need in-line titles?

But I may be missing something, correct me if I’m wrong.

Sorry for the bad news,

Pablo

Seems to be. While before= is honored, after= is not. This looks like an
inconsistency that can be addressed.

I use tagged pdfs for output

With the correct tags, paragraphs, headings, lists, and tables

Perhaps one can just use in-paragraph bolding and mark that text

for heading level 3 content in APA style.

For now that might be best as long as you do not need to reference them
in a table of contents (not required by APA, as I read the standard,
although perhaps an added requirement from your publisher).

Thanks for your assistance. I'm a newbie and appreciate the

happy with the text alternative.

You should also add a \stopparagraph after the Oh Hum line.

 Then change \setupheads to \setuphead. \setupheads should have only
one []. That [] contains key/value option pairs that apply to all
heading levels. \setuphead[sectionlevel][] is used to provide key/value
option pairs for sectionlevel headings (and for lower-level heads for
inherited options).

Hi Henri,
Thank you, it works. What's weird is that I used \setuphead
[subsection][...] once unsuccessfully probably a mistake on my part.
When you’re unsure which keys and values are available for a command
take a look into the command reference which is included in each context
release as i-context.pdf and also available on Hans server with variants
for each interface: http://pragma-ade.nl/show-man-5.htm

maybe, but more a side effect i think .. the incrementnumber is the
official way to have an unumbered section (in fact 'subject's are the way)

- Once a figure gets a number like "3.4", isn't it a bug if the
reference to that figure says "Figure 4"?
- (I find it a bit problematic that figures are numbered "1.1", "2", "1.3".)

there is a bit of history behind this:

- in mkii we stored the numbers like 1:2:3:4 in the utility file
- so in order to get less prefixes in for isntance a list we had to
parse that number

- which was possible because we knew the level
- but then getting pieces colors or in an other font was kind of tricky
(but diable)

- the same for converted numbers
- for mixed usage there was no way to distinguish rendering

but in mkiv, we do it different:

- each number is stored along with the used prefix so we can exactly
match them
- but we can also configure them differently as we have all information
available

- of course overloaded numbers are also handled

While I could at least understand why implementing the second thing
properly might be a bit more challenging, I don't understand why a
reference would ever be allowed to change the original label.

well, you think so, but all you can't imagine get requested ... the same
for the way prefixes are dealt with; we have documents with several
interwoven number systems and we can have more or less suffixes in
different sections of a document, image, reference .. whatever, so
whenever a number is requested there is now full control over the prefix
(what components to use) as well as the number (what components to show)
.. indeed complex

not much different from users mixing fonts that don't match well

I'm experiencing a similar problem with figures in appendices (I
already reported it, but I need to find that mail).

there are quite some example posts by wolfgang .. there are also some
examples in the test suite

And there's another tiny problem that's partially a consequence of a
human mistake. If a reference is missing, \in[reference] would print
"??". But if one accidentally tries to reference some unnumbered
subsubsection, \in doesn't print anything to even remotely indicate an
error. (The origin of the error was initially referencing
subsubsections in one chapter, then removing numbers of subsubsections
for the sake of another chapter and it took a while until the problem
was spotted.)

maybe some day i'll add a bit more tracing but keep in mind that when
one user asks for ?? another asks for nothing (the log can show some
info too, and there is actually a truckload of trackers to help you)

[NTG-context] Prefix for figure number lost in unnumbered subsection

2015-05-08 Thread Mojca Miklavec
Hi,

Consider the following example where I wanted to remove subsubsection
numbers (as one ends with way too many numbers otherwise). The figure
numbering is screwed up, I get:
- Figure 1.1
- Figure 2
- Figure 1.3

\setuphead
[subsubsection]
[number=no]
\starttext
\chapter{Chapter A}
\section{Section B}

\placefigure[force]{correct prefix}{test}
\subsubsection{Subsubsection D}

\subsection{Subsection E}

\stoptext

How to fix that? (I know that I can used something else than
subsubsection, but it would be nice to get a proper fix.)

Hi Lukáš,

of course, my suggestion to add this to the wiki was motivated because I
thought it was a feature rather than a bug.

But it turns out that I was wrong again :-).

Hello,

I'd rather wait publishing the "trick"

systematically (Hans' intention for the next beta).

Best regards,

actually there is rather complex code in the core that deals with it ..

Is there a way to bind it with the next head (subsection) - so that "5 Sec", "5.1
Subsec" (and at least one line of the following paragraph) would be together on one page?

Kind regards,

Lukas

[NTG-context] Blank space between \subsection & columns (related to: XML processing & columns & (almost) empty pages)

2015-02-19 Thread Procházka Lukáš Ing . - Pontex s . r . o .

Hello,

I found a "more minimal" example which produces unwanted blank space between
\subsection and columns:

% nofruns=1

\starttext
  \dorecurse{5}{
\subsection{T}
\startcolumns[n=4,balance=yes]
  \input knuth
\stopcolumns
}
\stoptext

The blank space appears on pg. 2 (subsection #4) - the head is not bound to the
following columns.

Why is there the blank space?
How to avoid it?

Best regards,

Lukas

\subsection has the same values as \section because unknown values are taken
from the parent, e.g. \subsection use \section settings and \section use

values etc.

A exception to this behaviour are textstyle, textcolor, numberstyle and
numbercolor
because the use only the values from style/colors keys of the own level.

a workaround with the following:
\setuphead[section][before={\blank[3*big] \testpage[15]}]

normally, parameters are inherited when you clone (like wide figures
from figures) or when there is some parent setup command; in the case of
sections, there is inheritance but some are overloaded in strc-def

normnally when you set up head, you only need to set up chapter,
section, subsection, subsubsection (the unnumbered variants inherit)

– how can I change the formating of a section without changing the
subsection?

not, as subsection inherits, so then you need to set up the subsection too

You could define subsection as a copy from section.

\setupsection[section][conversion=numbers,previousnumber=no]

\definehead[subsection][section]
\setuphead[subsection][style=]

I tried to get this effect also with ConTeXt's subhead and setupsection
commands but failed to get the desired effect. The only way to know
and understand the keys for both commands is to read the source :-(

Hi Michael,

you need previousnumber=no in setupsection.

\setupsection
  [section]
  [conversion=Romannumerals]

\setuplabeltext
  [section={{},{.}},
   subsection={{},{.}}]

\setuphead
  [section]
  [style=bold,
   alternative=normal,
   textcommand=\uppercase]

\setupsection
  [subsection]
  [previousnumber=no,
   conversion=Character]

\starttext
\section{A Section Title}
\subsection{A Subsection Title}

Why do you need literal subsections? Why not roll your own section in
tandem with \section?

The following produces what you want:

========
\setuphead[section][conversion=Romannumerals]
\definehead[SUBsection][section]
\setuphead[SUBsection][conversion=Character]

\setuplabeltext[section={{},{.}}]
\setuplabeltext[SUBsection={{},{.}}]

\starttext

\section{A Section Title}

\SUBsection{A Subsection Title}

Hi, I am trying to write up a legal document, in which I want the numbers
for section and subsection look like:

,
| I. A Section Title
|
| A. A Subsection Title
`

So far, I can only get

,
| I. A Section Title
|
| I.A. A Subsection Title
`

Commend used:

\setupsection[section-3][conversion=Romannumerals]
\setuplabeltext[section={{},{.}}]
\setuphead[section]
  [style=bold,alternative=normal,textcommand=\uppercase]
\setupsection[section-4][conversion=Character]

How can I get what I need? Thanks.

Re: [NTG-context] Subsection header last item on a page

Hans,

\subsection{A Piecewise Defined Function}

was the last line at the bottom of a page. We're going through on our
last pass before burning cds, so I took care of it with:

\page[yes]
\subsection{A Piecewise Defined Function}

But I thought tex wouldn't allow this sort of thing, or perhaps there
are some things we could set for widow and orphan control.

Re: [NTG-context] continuous numbering of subsection

2006-06-26 Thread Ulf Martin
Hi

Hans Hagen schrieb:
> \setuphead   [chapter][resetnumber=no]
> \setupsection[section][previousnumber=no]

I do not quite understand the reseting mechanism.

I want a lowest level section-like subdivision that has a running number
which is unaffected by any of the above levels irrespective of the
existence of higher levels. The higher levels should be numbered
hierarchically as usual.

When I try

\setuphead[section][resetnumber=no]
\setuphead[subsection][resetnumber=no]
\setupsection[subsubsection][previousnumber=no]

The subsubsection number is indeed not reset if *all* higher levels are
present; but if I leave one out, it is reset; additionally the
subsection is of course not reset, which I don't want:

\section{One}
\subsection{Oneone}
\subsubsection{Topicone}% number = 1, OK
\subsection{Onetwo}
\subsubsection{Topictwo}% number = 2, OK
\section{Two}
\subsubsection{Topicthree}  % number = 1, wrong
\subsection{Twoone} % number = 2.3, wrong
\subsubsection{Topicfour}   % number = 2, wrong
\subsection{Twotwo} % number = 2.4, wrong
\subsubsection{Topicfive}   % number = 3, wrong

With this:

\setuphead[section][resetnumber=yes]
\setuphead[subsection][resetnumber=no]
\setupsection[subsubsection][previousnumber=no]

I get:

\section{One}
\subsection{Oneone}
\subsubsection{Topicone}% number = 1, OK
\subsection{Onetwo}
\subsubsection{Topictwo}% number = 2, OK
\section{Two}
\subsubsection{Topicthree}  % number = 1, wrong
\subsection{Twoone} % number = 2.1, now OK
\subsubsection{Topicfour}   % number = 2, wrong
\subsection{Twotwo} % number = 2.2, now OK
\subsubsection{Topicfive}   % number = 3, wrong

So the numbering of \subsubsection{Topicthree} is reset by
\section{Two}, irrespective of the latter's resetnumber option.

Here are examples of what I'd really like (here "§" indicates a topic,
the actual section-level names (like "chapter" etc.) are not important):

I. ... "Chapter"
  § 1 ...
 1 ... "Section"
  § 2 ...  Topic in section
   1.1 ... "Subsection"
  § 3 ...  Topic in subsection
  § 4 ...
   1.2  ...
  § 5 ...
 2 ...
  § 6 ...
  § 7 ...
   2.1  ...
  § 8 ...
II. ...
  § 9 ...  Topic in chapter
 1 ...
  § 10 ...
  § 11 ...
   1.1  ...
  § 12 ...

Of course, referencing, entry in TOC, index etc. should be correct.

It would be even more preferable if one could "attach" the topic
numbering to a specified level. If the topic were attached to chapters
then the above example would become:

I. ... "Chapter"
  § 1 ...  Topic in chapter
 1 ... "Section"
  § 2 ...  Topic in section
   1.1 ... "Subsection"
  § 3 ...  Topic in subsection
  § 4 ...
   1.2  ...
  § 5 ...
 2 ...
  § 6 ...
  § 7 ...
   2.1  ...
  § 8 ...
II. ...
  § 1 ... First topic in second chapter
 1 ...
  § 2
  § 3
   1.1  ...
  § 4  ...

One could summarize it this way: §'s are conceptually the lowest level
of subsections, their number is reset by a subsection of some higher
level (or never).

In LaTeX one can get this kind of behaviour because the numbering is
controlled by counters. The increment of one counter may be used to
reset another counter independent of the actual section level they are
used for.

Bye & Thank you all

Ulf

Hi

Hans Hagen schrieb:
 > \setuphead   [chapter][resetnumber=no]

Ok, I undestand. I apologise that my example was too short. I'd like to
have things more flexible:

If an arbitrary and irregular number of levels is introduced (sections,
subsections, etc., numbered hierarchically as usual), the topic
numbering should remain continuous and unaffected
(that's why I thought, a separate definition, as in
\definehead[topic][...], would be appropriate).

Conceptually, though, "topic" is a section-like subdivision, so, for
example, should appear in the TOC.

This is typical e.g. in (German) law texts (here with "§" as a topic
marker but this is not the point), Example:

I. ... "Chapter"
 § 1 ...
1 ... "Section"
 § 2 ...  Topic in section
  1.1 ... "Subsection"
 § 3 ...  Topic in subsection
 § 4 ...
  1.2  ...
 § 5 ...
2 ...
 § 6 ...
 § 7 ...
  2.1  ...
 § 8 ...
II. ...
 § 9 ...  Topic in chapter
1 ...
 § 10 ...
 § 11 ...
  1.1  ...
 § 12 ...

Of course, referencing, entry in TOC, index etc. should be correct.

It would be even more preferable if one could "attach" the topic
numbering to a specified level, say, chapters. The above example then
would become:

I. ... "Chapter"
 § 1 ...  Topic in chapter
1 ... "Section"
     § 2 ...  Topic in section
  1.1 ... "Subsection"
 § 3 ...  Topic in subsection
 § 4 ...
  1.2  ...
 § 5 ...
2 ...
 § 6 ...
 § 7 ...
  2.1  ...
 § 8 ...
II. ...
 § 1 ... First topic in second chapter
1 ...
 § 2
 § 3
  1.1  ...
 § 4  ...

Thank you & sorry for the incomplete first question!

[NTG-context] continuous numbering of subsection

2006-06-25 Thread Ulf Martin
Dear ConTeXt Experts

I am still sometimes confused about how to set up simple things...

I want to have a subsection level head type ("topic") with a numbering
that runs undependently from the section numbering, like so:

1. First Topic
...

I. Section One
...

2. Second Topic
...

3. Third Topic
...

4. Fourth Topic
...

II. Section Two

5. Fifth Topic
...

6. Sixth Topic
...

III. Section Three
...

And so on.

ConTeXtgarden, the manual, etc. show in great detail how to set up the
/appearence/ of head parts (incl. numbercommand), but I cannot find an
explanation of the handling of the LaTeX equivalent to counters (their
definition, incrementing, resetting, etc.). The explanation of
\setupheadnumber in the manual (p. 172) is quite obscure to me -- how do
I specify that I do not want higher levels of head to reset my numbering?

Thank you!
Ulf Martin
