computer names are the user names prefaced with the facilitiy's 4 character

  The problem with
using the username is that now you have two resources with the same name (the
computer and the user), that’ll mess up the messenger service and quite likely
  the computer browser as well. Over the years, I’ve used a number of schemes;
right now I use a combination of machine type, and user’s name. Like NB-Smith,
(Ms Smith has a notebook) and alphabetically all the NBs and DTs, are grouped together. It’s helpful to know
what type system is in use for backups and central management tools like and
anti-virus system. FWIW, the last big site I worked at, 9500 users, we used
serial numbers only – that was because s/n was the only thing guaranteed to be
  unique.

  I use the user
name, but I've got a small 50 person installation. I change the name if the
person changes.  It simplifies figuring out who's having a problem,
because I know everyone. Tougher in a large organization.

  I sure as heck
wouldn't agonize over it. You want to be able to browse a list to pinpoint
who's having a problem. And if necessary tie that back to some
inventory/allocation information.  Serial Number would probably work if
you have a good inventory system.

We are a puny 150 PC house so we do use usernames in the PC name for ease in
remote control. We rebuild each PC when an employee leaves or annually to
keep the PC's "clean".

RE: Aggregating Intel Pro 100 cards

I loaded the latest ones from Intel. Any caveats? Currently this will only
be for outbound connections as I'm pretty sure 3COM SuperStack II 3000's
don't support port aggregation. We are moving to Cisco so if anyone has a
recommendation for a Cisco switch that does this I would appreciate it.

If the security patch to be applied is dependent o what SP level your IE
is
at, is there a way in the batch file to determine it and apply the
proper
patch?

How are others handling this in 500-700 machine organizations? The
version
would be the same when the machines are rolled out, but some users do
have a
habit of actually updating the systems from windowsupdate.

Just one problem with this - email delivery is not instant. I often get
many follow-up postings before I receive the original question.

Sure, there are some sloppy folks out there (and I have seen several folks
say "Do this..." when the frustrated poster has already mentioned that
"this" did not work). However, if someone asks a very simple question,
lots of folks are going to reply before they receive any of the follow-up

It's OK Sabrina.  Don't let these "old-timers" scare
you.  You are not the first newbie to try and help out by posting a
hoax that they thought was a real virus.  Especially since there is
a really nasty one running around.

Be sure to respond to whomever sent this to you and let them know
to check out viruses on sites such as Symantec, NAI and such before they
send them to you.  Believe me, if a virus is running, this list
will know about long before any User will and if you stay on this list
every day, so will you.

Also, is there a setting to prevent W2K from loading the desktop until the

2001-09-12 Thread Dewar Charles R

I'm used to being in the minority... at work, in my community. I had to shed
my Christian upbringing. Very difficult. I don't mind being in the minority,
but it can be worrisome at times when your employers, neighbors, and even
this list owner is very much Christian. I don't want to lose my job,
friendships, or list access for perceived insults.

And what's wrong with that? I have no problem representing the minority, no
more than representing the majority. But having grown up as a Jew in a very
Christian area, I fully understand the "benefits" of being a minority. It
didn't stop me then and it won't stop me now.

I just visited this site link! The teachings of Islam seem to be very
Anti-Christ. They don't seem to deny Jesus existed;
only that He is the Son of God who came in the flesh, died on the cross for
the sins of mankind, was buried, rose again and is now seated at the right
hand of God.
Further I noted that they believe salvation is through not only belief in
God but through works; forgiveness of sins is obtained by converting to
Islam...??? They go to great lengths to substantiate Muhammad' s
qualifications as a prophet by quoting the Old Testament??? Hmmm... If they
then use the Old Testament as a base to substantiate Muhammad why wouldn't
they then see that in the Old Testament under the Law there is NO remission
of sin without the shedding of blood in the form of a sacrifice (Lamb)?

Jesus who lived without sin was made sin and slain as a sacrifice for the
sins of all men. For as sin entered the world through one man (Adam) sin
was atoned for by one man (Jesus). For God so loved the world that He gave
His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish,
but have everlasting life.

My humble opinion,

Harry Campbell

many experts there are.

One guy was talking about why Muslims hate Christians.  Being pretty damn
ignorant, I decided to do a little research this morning, and found this
site - www.islam-guide.com.  Maybe it's watered down a bit, and it doesn't
explain religious fanaticism.  But at least I understand their religion a
little bit better.

Just thought I throw this out.  At least for me, education and

I'm not going to use this forum (or my employer's time) to proselytize.
I would just encourage those who do not believe that the Bible is the

MORNING OF HORROR

By L. Neil Smith

Special to _The Libertarian Enterpise_

First of all, expect never to learn the truth about what happened
at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and elsewhere this morning of
September 11, 2001, any more than we did with regard to the murders of
Jack and Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, at Ruby Ridge, Waco, or
Oklahoma City. Ambiguity and uncertainty serve far too many political
interests.

Another certainty is that, although I'm told 50,000 people worked
in the World Trade Center, more innocent individuals will die as a
result of what the Old Media are lovingly referring to as a "lockdown"
of Manhattan and other places, than any acts of terrorism that may have
occurred. The military has just said they'll shoot down any plane they
see flying. Only one civilian plane is in the air this morning, Air
Force One; that's as grim a warning of things to come as I can think
of.

"Collateral" deaths won't just happen as a consequence, say, of
somebody with a heart attack being unable to get to a hospital, but
whenever and wherever some dumb kid in an army uniform gets startled
by a car backfiring and starts spraying everybody and his pet poodle
with automatic rifle fire. Or to whomever the martial lawyers decide
it's safe to liquidate using this foul mess as a cover. Or, vastly
more ominously, to people in the not-so-distant future who decide they
must resist the police state that will inevitably result from these
events.

It's extremely difficult to think coherently about long term
effects, let alone to get it all down in writing, when you learn that,
not only were hijacked commercial aircraft used to commit these
unspeakably evil acts, but that 90 passengers died helplessly in the
first plane, and others yet unnumbered may have died in subsequent
attacks. _Somebody_ has to think about it, though, or this situation
will be used to turn the Bill of Rights off forever. Depending on the
planning behind it, or who did the planning, it may already be too
late.

All airports have been shut down today, and I shudder to think
about what flying will be like from now on. The Clintons, Schumers,
and Waxmans will try to shut down the Internet, calling it a breeding
ground for terrorism. The Bushes and Cheneys will "reluctantly" go
along.

Rush Limbaugh will cheer them on.

What should those who value their freedom do? Every chance you
have, from this moment on, whether it's on talk radio, or on the
letters to the editor page, on the Internet while it's still possible,
or in communication with everyone you know -- it's time for even the
most apolitical to write to senators and congressmen -- emphasize two
points:

First, inform them that closing down the First or Second or any
other Amendment is not an appropriate response to what's happened, and
that any politician or bureaucrat in office who attempts to capitalize
on today's horrors is committing the same sort of blatantly criminal
act I've always insisted must be punished under Bill of Rights
enforcement.

Second, these things happen to nations with imperial ambitions.
There has never been a major act of terrorism I know of that hasn't
resulted from an act of government that violated somebody's rights. The
way to keep this sort of thing from happening again is to stop those
violations.

Hideously enough, my new novel _The American Zone_, scheduled to
be published next November by Tor Books, begins with an act very
similar to this one, carried out to force the creation of a strong
central government in the governmentless "North American Confederacy"
that figures in so many of my books. As anybody who knows my work can
safely predict, the evil scheme doesn't work and the villains are
defeated.

Life isn't as predictably pleasant as fiction. Happy endings are
few and far between. But it's important to act swiftly if we're to
preserve anything resembling the freedom that made this civilization
great.

 Pass the word.

Yes, gas is still moving, they haven't bombed any oil ships, at least there
are no reports of this.and I don't expect any either. This is just
another example of the oil companies taking advantage of the situation.
There are no shortages and haven't been for some time now. In addition, the
price of oil isn't that much higher than a couple of years ago when the
prices of gas were much much lower. But, you will note that the oil
companies have had several great quarterly reports in the last year or so.
I wonder why!!!

Can anyone confirm that gas prices are going up around the country?
Supposedly it's around $6.00 a gallon already in some places...

I have been reading up on that today and I think you are right - it will be
easier to reference a separate cab file. The drvindex.inf file gets
overwritten by new service packs so I'll have to leave ample documentation
on what I did here. This will be a good way to include newer printer
drivers etc also.

Why not just put the needed information in the drvindex.inf file in your
own
section at the head of the file pointing to the location where the file is
located. I think that might be easier. Are you sure you can add files to a
cab file without altering the digital signature?

Subject: Adding drivers to driver.cab part 2

Since I posted the first message, I discovered that the drivers are listed
in a file called drvindex.inf which is in the inf folder. From looking at
this file, it seems that Windows looks at this inf file first to see if the
named driver is available, and which cab files to look in. So on my
system which had sp1 applied and then later had sp2 applied, I have both
Sp1.cab and sp2.cab. The drvindex.inf specifies sp2.cab and driver.cab.
So I think I could delete sp1.cab.I havent found any reference to
checksums anywhere so on Monday I'm going to try placing my ibm drivers in
driver.cab and adding the names to drvindex.inf. That way if newer
versions of those files show up in sp3.cab, Windows will get those newer
ones instead of the ones that are in driver.cab. I'll post the results
to the list on Monday, assuming I dont have a crisis to deal with.

1) But then they would see all the other Users' folders even if they could
not access them, wouldn't they?

2) Thanks!

3) It is complicated to set it up the way I did, but it seems simpler to
maintain and locks things down. I'm intrigued by your idea, however. They
are running apps local on their PC, just accessing the data file on the
server.. with the exception of the one SQL app. They wouldn't use the RUNAS
or SU would they?

1)
Since you stated you have both Win2K clients and a Win2k server, you don't
need to explicitly share each user folder. Sharing Users$ is enough. Use
login script and map home drive like:

Net use h: \\Win2kSrv\Users$
I would also change the user permissions from Full control to Change, as
they will have all necessary permissions they need, but with Full control
they have the added luxury of attempting to lock you out of the folder, a
PITA when you have to take ownership of a folder with 18 levels.

2)
For the shared folder; your permissions seem OK to me

3)
Shared Apps: Very Intuitive!! I would have gone a different, perhaps more
complicated way

My suggestion would be to lock out the users and use RUNAS (or SU from the
Resource Kit ~ looks like the better option) and setup a service account.
Give the service account permission to view the directory, and change the
shortcut to start SU instead of the actual program. You may have an icon on
all the users desks pointing to a network share, but you only have to create
a batch file (I prefer CMDs) once on the server, make a shortcut to it, and
copy it to the Desktop section of All Users for each workstation. All can
be scripted.

My $.02, and I hope it helps :)

Got a Windows 2000 Server with Windows 2000 clients (no AD). Here's what I
did and I would love other sysadmin opinions:

1) For home shares, I wanted each user to map directly to their folder. I
created the Users$ folder for organization and administration.
\\servername\Users$\username$\
Users$
Share=Admin (Full)
File Security=Everyone (Full)
Username$ (Changes with each user)
Share=User (Change)
File Security=Everyone (Full)

2) For folders shared by groups of users, I wanted them to be able to see
all the folder names but only have access to the ones they should have.
\\servername\Groups$\subfolder
Groups$
Share=Admin (Full)
Everyone (Change)
File Security=Everyone (Read, List Folder Contents)
Admin (Full)
subfolders
File Security=Specific Global Group (Modify)
Admin (Full)

3) Now the trickiest one: For shared application files, I wanted to be able
to map each user to a specific hidden share, but I did not want them to be
able to browse by double-clicking the mapped drive. The applications they
ran needed to be able to modify the data on the server, but I did not want
them to be able to easily delete the data through newbie behavior. Each of
the application shortcuts on their PC would access the files in the
subfolders *beyond* the share.
\\servername\Apps$\application
Apps$
Share=Admin (Full)
Everyone (Change)
File Security=Admin (Full)
Everyone (Traverse Folder) <--- Here's the important
part
application
File Security=Admin (Full)
Specific Global Group (Change)

Now, the hickie we came across is that the apps on the server like SQL and
Norton Antivirus could no longer access the folders in which we had removed
the Everyone rights. Adding SYSTEM and SERVICE accounts seemed to have fixed
that.

Now, I know I can do this much easier by mapping many drives, but I want to
keep things organized and simple for the users. Anyone know of a better way?

40 hours OT in a month seems really extreme.

I knew getting into the game long hours and weekends were part of the deal.
And little appreciation is the other "benefit".

Like some of the others, my boss knows what I am doing for the company, and
gives me a lot of room time wise. If I drag myself in late a few days, she
doesn't worry about it. If I knock off an hour early here and there, that's
cool too. As long as the ship is sailing, I have a lot of flexibility.
Officially, no one else in the company has to know about it. I put in my
more than my fair share of time, and everyone realizes that. It all boils
down to how tight you are with your boss.

The reason I ask is one of the other network guys and myself have put in
about 40 hours over time this month and we receive nothing for it.

Just wondering what policies are set up at other companies to compensate for
over time.

We consistently work about 8-12 hours over a month and we get no time off or
anything for this.

Management keeps telling us it is just part of our job and we can not get
any comp time even though we are only scheduled for

40 hours a week.

way?

My ideas:

1) Backup server with Backup Exec and restore to new server.
2) Copy data files and then import registry key
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares

Old "server" (temporary) is a Dell Optiplex Pentium III PC. New server is
Dell Poweredge 2500 PIII 1.13GHz with embedded PowerEdge Expandable RAID
Controller, Version 3, Dual Channel (PERC3/Di) . Way different.

That's true, except their might be a hardware issue.
Does the new server have raid? Is it a dell, there are no DOS drivers,
so you cant ghost (There time intensive ways around that)...Plus there
is the issue anyway of making it boot if the new system does not have
drivers built into, or added to the previous install. A simpler solution
would be like IDR if he has BE already.

We need more info on your two hardware configs dude!

Use Ghost. I think it would be the fastest method.

OT: Web-based help desk system

2001-08-24 Thread Dewar Charles R

Just thought I would pass along as a extremely satisfied customer
(especially after my horrible experiences with Blue Ocean), that Internet
Software Sciences http://www.inet-sciences.com has released a new version of
their very affordable and useable web-based help desk software called
Web+Center Help Desk 3.5. I had been beta testing it an the owner/author,
Scott Vanderlip, has been one of the nicest and most receptive people I've
worked with. The five-user version is only $1500 and the three tech version
is still free! My reputation has gone up a couple of points since using this
product because of the automatic email notifications.

Additional information about the new features and upgrade information can be
found in latest Internet Software Sciences
Newsletter on the web at:

http://www.inet-sciences.com/newslettervol3.html

As a side note, any of you other sysadmin's using this product in a hospital
environment? I'd love to share notes. We modified the product since many of
our users (nurses mostly) don't use a PC. Also, Scott wrote a terrific app
for us based on Web+Center that will save our Medical Staff department
thousands of dollars in labor that you might be interested in. It is a
simple online database of the physicians with privileges at our hospital
that insurance companies and HMO's can access. The Medical Staff department
was having to answer about 300 requests a month via fax or mail.

I post this without compensation. I just love the product and am impressed
with Scott's support.

Hmmm

The patch checker found that my IIS 5 installation needed Q296185.

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q296/1/85.ASP

I applied the patch to it and now have a problem. My little intranet web
site is stopped and when I try to start it, I get the following error:

"The service could not be started because it is not configured properly.
Make sure that the server bindings do not conflict with other sites running
on the same machine."

Now, if I stop the Default Web Site, I can start the Intranet Web Site and
vice versa. Problem is, a Software Artisans loaded its SMTP service in the
Default Web Site. Being a newbie to IIS, why is this occurring and what is
the best solution?
