[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay update - no phalarope

2009-08-03 Thread David Klauber

>From about 5:30 to 7 PM I was at the north end of the east Pond. Lloyd
>Spitalnik had been there for a couple of hours previous to that. No phalarope,
>although a false alarm with a couple of hyper pale Lesser yellowlegs.

Conditions and species are as noted previously with a couple of exceptions.
There was a lone Red Knot (faded breeding) with the dowitchers, one breeding
colorful Long-billed Dowitcher, the largest, brightest bird in its flock,
completely salmon pink through its underparts and the head not yet molted, and
BB Plover numbers increased somewhat. About 10 or so Stilt Sandpipers were a
bit south of the cove. Couldn't find a Pectoral

[nysbirds-l] CRESLI trip today, 8/3

2009-08-03 Thread Corey Finger
I was on today's CRESLI whale-watching trip out of Montauk, enjoying the
beautiful sunny weather. Sightings included:

300+ Corey's Shearwaters
300+ Greater Shearwaters
1 Manx/Audubon Shearwater (just couldn't get the ID)
400+ Wilson's Storm-Petrels
1 juvenile Northern Gannet
1 Fin Whale
1 Minke Whale
30+ Common Dolphins

and more tuna than could fit in all the cans in all the bodegas in New York
City. Seriously, there were more tuna in the air than birds at some points
(that might be a bit hyperbolic but you get the idea).

The trip was fun, and well worth the long drive out to Montauk early in the
morning. I'll have a post up with pictures on the blog by the weekend I hope.

Good Birding,
Corey Finger

[nysbirds-l] Baird's Sandpiper - Hulbert Rd, Town of Wilson, Niagara County

2009-08-03 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
On the way home from work today, I found a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER at the
shrinking puddles on Hulbert Road. I also had Killdeer, 2 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, SEMI. PLOVER, SEMI. and LEAST SANDPIPERS. I only had binoculars
so other species could easily have been missed.

Good birding!
