[nysbirds-l] Midtown Birding

2012-11-30 Thread Alan Drogin
After being briefly closed with minimal tree damage after Hurricane Sandy, the
ice skating rink and concession booths of Bryant Park are in full swing .
Despite the large crowd of shoppers, the birds are sticking around for the
plentiful supply of food scraps and their own "private" dining area where the
benches are cordoned off on one side by the rink and the high railing on the
other. Besides the large numbers of House and White-throated Sparrows, two
Swampies were hiding near the bird bath in the northeast corner. Hermit
Thrushes and Catbirds were on every side last week but appear to be declining
in number now. Two Sapsuckers were on the Lindens in front of the library. I
didn't have my binoculars at the time, but over the past two days I've seen two
raptors circling and landing on top of the Bank of America. No big surprises
like last winter yet, but I did get one minor surprise today - a female
Brown-headed Cowbird at the northwest corner of the rink - a first for me in
Bryant Park.

Happy Birding,
Alan Drogin

[nysbirds-l] Vultures on Long Island

2012-11-30 Thread AndyatWH
Today as we were looking for the Pacific Loon ( no luck) Bob Anderson(?)
and I saw and photographed a flock of 17 Turkey Vultures perched in the
trees, south of the bridge over the creek off East Moriches Blvd., 1/2 mile
West of Seatuck Ave, off Montauk,in Eastport, Long Island.

To see Turkey Vultures at all on Long Island used to be rare.

[nysbirds-l] Pacific Loon: Moriches: YES

2012-11-30 Thread Peter Polshek
The previously reported Pacific Loon continues in the bay off the shore of East
Moriches. Late this afternoon we, Tom Moran and I, observed the bird actively
feeding along the bay's north shore. Best viewing was from the end of
Evergreen Ave, but if we could have teleported to the end of Watchogue Ave or
Maple Ave, we would have had superior views. All the loons in this section of
the bay were active and were typically visible only a few seconds at a time.
Towards the end of the day the birds stayed visible much longer. Be patient if
you go.

[nysbirds-l] Paul Gillen

2012-11-30 Thread Orhan Birol
Paul Gillen and I had a special relationship.

He was the one who made me an avid birder from 1986-2002; until I lost all
of the 380+ NY List due to the corruption of my Thayer's Birder's List and
gave up.
I met him first time at the Schinnecock Inlet scoping the inlet and ocean,
as I had droven there to check the ocean conditions to see if I could take
my boat out.
I used to post all the birds I had seen in my yard in a diary, but had no
clue people used to search birds outside their yards. My first question to
him was about the
female Red-bellied Woodpecker ,a woodpecker I had never seen in my yard in
East Quogue since I bought the house in 1976, until then. When it was
cleared that the Red-bellied Woodpecker was not a rear bird, just one which
extended it's range north gradually and people birded outside their yards
too, I got hooked.

Paul was the one who advised me to buy the Swarovski scope I still have and
he was the one who showed me my first Red-throated Loon, Boat Tailed
Grackle and Horned Lark.
I did also see the Blacked-tailed Godwit he discovered and IDENTIFIED.

He will be greatly missed,

Orhan Birol

[nysbirds-l] Smith Point County Park, etc.

2012-11-30 Thread Peter Post

Ardith Bondi and I spent the morning at Smith Point County Park.
Except for a flock 125 Boat-tailed Grackles (in the parking lot) and
numbers of loons and gannets offshore there were very few birds of
note. No winter finches and only one White-throated Sparrow.

One male EURASIAN WIGEON continues on Mill pond in Sayville.

At 7:00 am there was a BARRED OWL perched on a Lamp Pole near exit 18
(Queens Co.) on the LIE. This appears to be a good years for this
species with up to three individuals in one day in Central Park.

[nysbirds-l] Sad News

2012-11-30 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Yesterday I learned that Paul Gillen of Southold, Long Island, died last
week. Many of you will remember Paul as the fellow who found the
Black-tailed Godwit in Eastport many years ago. Before that Paul was one of
the the first birders in the modern era to find a bona fide Franklin's
Gull, a first-year bird that spent several weeks cadging handouts in the
parking lot of the Riverhead McDonald's. For many of us, that was the first
Franklin's Gull we had seen in New York. Paul was a regular contributor
throughout the years that I compiled East End Birds. Even as his abilities
diminished in recent years, he remained active in the field and was often
the first to report the rare waterfowl of Lake Marratooka. I, for one, am
very saddened to learn of his demise even though I did not know him well.

big Tugboats came through the inlet pulling all sorts of dredging gear. The
Dunlin flock continues atop the east jetty with an additional 1 possibly 2
Ruddy Turnstones spotted by Aaron Virgin. Lots of Northern
Gannets about. Eleven Blackbellied Plover landed on the beach to the
west just as I was leaving. The island on Ponqugue Bridge's far side had
ten resting GB Herons. Good Birding All, Carl Starace

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond: Virginia's Warbler, WW Crossbills

2012-11-30 Thread Peter Scully
The VIRGINIA'S WARBLER continues at Alley Pond and seems to cover a fair amount
of ground.  Bob Anderson found the bird in a mixed flock at 11:30 along the
path leading north from the baseball field towards the pond, after seeing it
near the Nutmeg Meadow earlier in the morning.  After a brief glimpse at 11:30
the bird disappeared, but turned up behind the adventure course high-wire
apparatus at 1:30, moving with a small group of Golden-crowned Kinglets.
After about twenty minutes, the bird flew over the ball field in the general
direction of the Nutmeg Meadow.

Six WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were eating grit from the base of a storm-toppled
tree north of the ball fields.

Four RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were in the pond north of the fields.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Western Tanager - Athens, Greene County +++

2012-11-30 Thread Will Raup

At 8:45 this morning, I arrived at the house with the Western Tanager in
Athens, Greene County.  There I met Anthony Collerton and the two of us were
invited inside to view the bird from the home owners dining room.  The bird fed
on the feeder near constantly the entire time I was there.

The home owners were spectacular and very gracious, however keep in mind that
they do live in a "gated community", there is very little parking and not all
of their neighbors may be as welcoming.  Again the homeowners (Peter and Hope)
asked that visitors please call before coming (518-844-8011).  The feeders the
bird is frequenting is not visible from the street.

As the bird was feeding frequently photos were not hard to obtain, I've posted
one photo here:  http://flic.kr/p/dxynPE

After I left, I hit Vosburgh's/4 Mile Point which was dead quiet (save for Deer
Hunters), the Coxsackie Boat Launch, which had nothing but a few Ring-billed
Gulls.  The Coast Guard was doing something on the river, likely keeping things
quiet.

I next hit the Greene County IDA Grasslands by the Serta Factory off 9w.  It
too was very quiet, with American Tree Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco,
American Goldfinch, Black-capped Chickadee, Red-tailed Hawk and a Hairy
Woodpecker.

Just as I was leaving a group of COMMON REDPOLLS landed in the weeds right near
the cul-du-sac, and I could hear many more going over head.  About a dozen or
so birds foraged very close to me, with one bird in particular getting to about
2 feet from me for some more photos.

http://flic.kr/p/dxynSy

http://flic.kr/p/dxyo1C

>From there I did a sweep of the local water areas, the Coxsackie Reservoir
>held the most variety with about 500 Canada Geese, 200 Ruddy Ducks, 75 Common
>Mergansers, 12 Hooded Mergansers, 4 American Black Ducks and a few Mallards.

Stanton Pond in Albany County was 90% frozen, but still held a handful of
Canada Geese, American Black Duck, Gadwall and American Wigeon.  The fields
going into the Holt Preserve in Coeymans held about 500 American Crows and 40
Wild Turkey.

>From there I still had more time, until it was time to pick up my wife... so I
>rode around the back roads of New Baltimore, Greene County not finding more
>than about 1 billion Dark-eyed Juncos (conservative estimate).

However, I did find this nice adult Red-shouldered Hawk, a difficult bird to
find in Region 8 and even more so in late fall/winter.

For those visiting the Western Tanager, please post your sightings positive or
negative - Thank you!

Good Birding!

[nysbirds-l] CP Rufous Hummer: No -- 11/30

All,

I passed by the Central Park Conservatory Gardens today, and the
flower beds in the North Garden are completely empty. Not sure when
the flowers were dug up and discarded, though I know this is done
every year in the late fall.

The South Garden still has a few purple salvia plants that have some
bloom left in them, but not much else.

No hummer in sight.

[nysbirds-l] ADMIN: Spamming and Computer Health

2012-11-30 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Good morning fellow birders!

I apologize for the delay in blocking the spam messages that were unknowingly
being distributed by a NYSbirds-L subscriber, as I was airport hopping all day
yesterday. This has since been corrected for, by placing the suspect subscribed
email address into an "always needs approval" status - meaning I will receive
notifications from the subscriber, should any attempt be made to post messages
to the eList.

This brings up an important reminder to all computer users, especially users
running Windows operating system. Browsers (i.e., Internet Explorer, Firefox,
etc.) whose settings have not been modified to remain vigilant against
intrusions are most susceptible to these kinds of spyware spam attacks. I
strongly encourage users to consider ramping up the security settings in your
browsers to prevent tracking cookies or similar "attacks" from occurring.
Simple Google searching can yield many "how to" results, that instruct on how
best to clean and secure your browsers and computers.

Also, consider switching to a more robust and reliable anti-spyware and
antivirus software. One free program that comes highly recommended is called
Avast! Free Antivirus (link: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download)
which includes an important boot-time scan capability – this scans your system
before any viruses can launch. Be aware that having multiple antivirus and
anti-spyware programs running on the same computer isn't always a good thing –
they don't always play nice together. The Avast! Free Antivirus is available
for Windows, Mac and Linux users.

Please do your part to help prevent the spread of computer malware and viruses.

Thanks and good birding!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H
