[nysbirds-l] Stone Bridge Nighthawk Watch

2019-09-09 Thread TURNER
We had 43 birds last night and 139 nighthawks tonight. About a dozen came down
toward dusk to feed over the pond, providing great views. Interestingly, 23
birds headed in the opposite direction - from the southwest to the northeast -
from what we usually observe.

It was nice to welcome some birders who live in the Big Apple and a reporter
writing an article on the Watch.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Orange County birding RFI

2019-09-09 Thread Felipe Pimentel
Hi Robert,

This is my e-bird report from yesterday. The place is called “Pine Island Turf
Nursery and it is a commercial sod farm (and other crops too). Generally, they
leave birders enter the farm during the weekends and when they are not actively
working on the fields. If they have the “were are open” sign on display, please
go into the office and ask for permission to enter the farm. The Sandhill
cranes come to this site very often (they fly from the Wallkill River Wildlife
Refuge to this place that is about one or 2 miles away from the refuge).
Yesterday, in addition to the SandHill cranes, I saw two American Golden
Plovers too.

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S59622495

All the sod farms and agricultural fields in Pine Island are good places to
find shorebirds during the fall migration. You have Skinner’s lane (e-bird
hotspot) and you have the sod farms near Route 12. You can also contact active
birders who are members of the Mearns Bird Club.

http://mearnsbirdclub.org/

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L682671

Black-bellied and American Golden Plovers have been seen often during the fall
migration (generally, early in the morning). There a couple of reports from the
last 2 weeks or so.

Check the e-bird reports for Orange County, NY.

Good Luck!

Apparently some Sandhill Cranes have been seen recently nearby; also American

[nysbirds-l] Bryant Park NYC

2019-09-09 Thread Gabriel Willow
I led the first of my fall twice-weekly NYC Audubon bird walks in Bryant Park
this morning. We had fairly low diversity but good numbers of several Warbler
species: about a dozen Common Yellowthroat, 5 Northern Waterthrush, several
Ovenbirds and American Redstarts, a B Warbler, and my FOS White-throated
Sparrows. Also of interest were a family of recently-fledged Gray Catbirds (at
least 3 fledgelings); this is the second year I’ve observed them nesting in the
park.

There was also an Empidonax high in a planetree, likely a Least.

Good Fall Birding,

Gabriel Willow

[nysbirds-l] A radar "fallout" in NYC

2019-09-09 Thread Gus Keri
The radar map is showing a massive amount of birds landing in NYC and the
tristate area. I haven't seen this much activities in a long time, especially
between 2 and 3 am.
It is promising for good birding day.
