Do VTers on the list count? If so I'd love the The (Audubon) Encyclopedia of
North American Birds – Terres and/or the Lives of North American Birds –
Kaufman.

Many thanks,

RE: [nysbirds-l] Sibley replacements

2015-02-06 Thread Patrick Santinello
I received the following 2 emails (below) today: It seems we are out of luck
now.

1)Good morning,

We are writing in reply to your recent request for a copy of the 2nd printing
of the above title.

We regret any inconvenience, however complimentary replacements for individuals
with the first printing of this edition are not available.

"The Sibley Guide to Birds was never meant to be a static publication. 'My goal
is for birders everywhere to have the best possible experience

With my guidebooks,’ says Sibley, ‘and I will continue to make adjustments to
ensure that is the case.' In the first edition of his landmark book,

author David Sibley made revisions over the course of several printings in an
effort to achieve the most accurate rendering of his work. This has

continued with the second edition of The Sibley Guide to Birds, with David
making several refinements, including type and color adjustments, in

the second printing. The second printing is now off press and available in
bookstores.

Thank you for your interest in this title. If you have not yet seen the 2nd
printing you may find it at your local bookstore.

It IS pretty far south for Great Gray OwI. However, I saw my first Great
Gray Owl on the North Shore of Long Island in the late 1970's (it was an
invasion year).

A heads up anyway:

There's an eBird report, as yet without any documentation - other than
"clearly a Great-gray", reported from NY Rt. 23 about halfway between Acra

I'm curious how many hunters actually know the difference between a crow (fish

surprised if even 25% of the hunters even try yo differentiate these "black"

SENATOR AVELLA PROTESTS UPCOMING CROW

HUNTING CONTEST

(ALBANY, NY) In continuing to advocate for the welfare of all animal species in
New York State, Senator Tony Avella came out against the upcoming “Crow Down”
hunting contest being hosted on March 29th in Palenville, NY. The contest,
which awards prizes for crows killed, does not have a bag limit and does not
require the use of non-toxic shots, raising significant concerns of inhumane
killings.

Unfortunately, the contest is considered perfectly legal under the New York
City Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regulations.

To better address the raising concerns with hunting contests, Senator Avella
has co-sponsored State legislation (Bill #S.4074), with Senator Jack Martins
which would make it unlawful for any person to organize, conduct, promote or
participate in any contest or competition where the objective of such contest
or competition is to take the greatest number of wildlife.

Senator Avella stated, “While I continue to support hunting rights, I do not
understand why hunting contests continue to be accepted as a general ‘family
fun day’ in New York State. These contests promote the slaughtering of
countless defenseless animals by creating a competitive atmosphere where
hunters try to kill the most amount of wildlife. Without any limit on the
amount of crows killed in this particular contest, who’s to say when is
enough?”

Edita Birnkrant, NY Director of Friends of Animals stated, “Bloody, barbaric
events like the “Crow Down” crow killing contest to be held in Palenville have
no place in modern, civilized society. Awarding adults and children prizes for
a mass killing contest of crows promotes a dangerous, violent attitude toward
all wildlife that we share our landscapes with. Friends of Animals strongly
urge passage of Senate bill # 4074 which would prohibit all killing contests
throughout NY State which also target coyotes, squirrels and other species that
play critically important roles in our ecosystem.”

Stella Miller, the President of the Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society
stated, “I was very disturbed to learn about the crow killing contest to be
held in Palenville. Crows are highly intelligent animals and are greatly
admired for their cognitive abilities. I am not sure how this barbaric
practice can be considered "sport". I am not opposed to subsistence hunting.
I am, however, adamantly opposed to killing for the sake of killing. I am
working on bringing more of the birding and conservation community in NY
together to oppose this particular event as well as all contest "hunts". I
support passage of Senate Bill # 4074 and believe firmly that contest "hunts"
should be permanently banned in New York State.”

Senator Avella concluded, “The lack of oversight of these hunting contests,
which oftentimes become animal slaughter contests, is incredible. Living in a
State which recognizes the dangers of gun use, we should re-evaluate our
approach to promoting countless wildlife killing as means of family
entertainment.”

I am not sure how this barbaric
practice can be considered sport. I am not opposed to subsistence hunting.
I am, however, adamantly opposed to killing for the sake of killing. I am
working on bringing more of the birding and conservation community in NY
together to oppose this particular event as well as all contest hunts. I
support passage of Senate Bill # 4074 and believe firmly that contest hunts
should be permanently banned in New York State.”

There is no good way to do this, other than to try and educate the

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Painted Bunting

Went looking for the painted bunting this morning between 7:30 and 8:30. At
the intersection of Rte 104 and Scrub Oak Road in Quogue, there was no bird
life at all. Drove the adjoining streets and found no birds. The sun was
still low in the sky, hadn't warmed up yet. This is a heavily wooded area
and is difficult to see if there are any active feeders anywhere. As you
might suspect, many houses are second homes and are deserted this time of
year. The Quogue Wildlife Refuge is less than a mile away from the
intersection and the feeders were jumping with the usual suspects. There
was one interesting spot on Midhampton Road just south of the RR tracks. It
looks to be a deserted parking lot of the old Quogue LIRR station. There
are weedy areas on both sides of parking lot.

[nysbirds-l] Eastport, Pond/Sod fields/Bike path

2011-11-26 Thread Patrick Santinello
A fairly nice array of ducks on Eastport pond this AM. Still quite a number
of Ring-necked Ducks (~80) along with small numbers of Canvasback (7), Am.
Wigeon (~18), Lesser Scaup (4), Gadwall (2) along with Black Duck, Mallard,
Ruddy Duck. Along the western shore of the pond toward the north end just
before the pond opens up to the northwest "cove" was a Black-crowned Night
Heron.

Still a fair amount of shore birds on the Sod field that is at the
intersection of Eastport Manor Road and Head of the Neck Road, dozens of
Black-bellied Plover along with around a couple dozen Least Sandpipers.
Nothing that I could detect at the larger sod fields along Cty Road 51.

I had a couple Golden-crowned Kinglets at the Cty Road 51 bike path as well
as one Eastern Bluebird.

Cheers,

Patrick Santinello

Working an earlier than usual shift at work got me home with just enough
daylight left to run over to Heckscher State Park (Suffolk Co.)
to try for migrating Nighthawks. But if any were on the move this evening,
none passed through the swath of sky I watched, only a few bats.
But I did not get shut out on birds entirely. As I neared my car (parked on
Old Schoolhouse Road) I heard the soft "whinny" call of an Eastern
Screech Owl from the well-wooded yard of a residence across the street. It
was soon answered by at least two different birds not far inside
the park boundary. The owls went back and forth for a few minutes with some
short lulls. My barely passable whinny imitation may have
done the trick, or maybe it was just coincidence, but eventually one owl
flew into a tree just inside the park fence. A streetlight up the block
provided just enough illumination to help make out the bird's shaggy
silhouette and some faint details, but I wished I'd had a flashlight in my
car.
These birds were among the very few Screech Owls I've encountered without
playback of recordings, mostly during the frigid pre-dawn hours of
Christmas counts, so finding some without trying on a balmy late summer
evening was a very pleasant surprise.

Hi..Bob is, I am sure, not the only person to ask similar questions. First,
this species is already on the accepted ABA list, this is not the first
North American record. As far as being a ship-assisted vagrant here is the
link to the ABA rule.(John Pushcock was kind enough to provide the
following)

"If you're concerned about whether it was ship-assisted or not AND if you
follow the ABA rules, you can actually count it whether it rode a ship or

All,

I am a bit surprised that the origin of this bird has not been discussed
much. With people coming from a long distance, I think it ought to be
mentioned more than it has been.

Has this bird arrived here on its own, or was it assisted? How can we
know?

Many people are concerned with listing questions, so the issue of origin
is important to them. Of course, many others are not, so it may be less
important to them. Scientifically, it is an interesting question.

The email below from Ken Gale suggests that it accompanied some Laughing
Gulls from Brazil. That is certainly possible. But it has evidently never
happened before, anywhere on the heavily birded East coast. Where is the
pattern of vagrancy for this species? Is not a ship-assist quite likely?

I am reminded of two other very rare species of gulls that first visited
eastern North America in the last fifteen years or so: Black-tailed Gull
and Kelp Gull. Both species had previously established vagrancy patterns
that made their appearance in eastern North America at least reasonable.
Here is a link to the Maryland records committee decision (favorable) on the
famous Kelp Gull at Sandgates in southern Maryland:

I don't presume to know the answer in the present case of the Grey-hooded
Gull. I too made the trek to Coney Island to see it. But it was for me a
"mere" odious drive through Queens of an hour. Some people are evidently
coming from much farther.

mere odious drive through Queens of an hour. Some people are evidently
coming from much farther.

..

I spoke with someone named Angus who thinks the bird came up with
Laughing Gulls when they returned from their wintering grounds in
South America and might very well stay until the Laughing Gulls fly
south in September.

Happy bird-day,

[nysbirds-l] Gray-Hooded Gull, technology and the "sacrificial birder"

2011-07-30 Thread Patrick Santinello
The Gray-Hooded Gull (as many of you already know) was present again today.
As I left the boardwalk at Coney Island someone (Edna) said, "Oh, I thought
I was going to be the sacrificial birder". To which I replied..."Well, now
you should hang around a little longer". Around 15 minutes later and around
5 exits east on the Belt Parkway I received calls from Sandy, Tom and Steve
Walter that the bird had (re)appeared. Cool!

I started birding at the late age of 35 around 15 or so years ago. I have
read that an older brain can never catch up to a brain that started birding
(or a lot of things for that matter) at a young age. That has been evidenced
to me more and more as time passes J.

As late as ten years ago not everyone had cell (smart!) phones. But, today
the sacrificial birder was redeemed by technology and some very nice guys
and one friend I hadn't seen in years. Thanks you guys, you helped this
late starter find #600. Much appreciated..let's see if it actually ends up
counting :-O

BTW, There were also 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls among the other (more
common) gulls seen today.

Good birding and good weekend..

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler - Hunter's Garden, Eastport NY

2011-05-25 Thread Patrick Santinello
Had a Yellow-throated Warbler (albilora) at Hunter's Garden on CR 51 in
Eastport today. The bird was deep in the trails to the west of the clearing.
North and east of where "Toppings Path" meets "Hot Water Street" . Also had
a nice male Blackburnian Warbler as well as a couple American Redstarts. The
usual suspects present (Ovenbird, Yellow, Pine). Tons of Red-eyed Vireo
around. Nice flock of 18 or so Cedar Waxwings..Lots of birdsong today with
my first Veery(s) since returning to NY, never tire of hearing that song.

Good birding

The HERMIT WARBLER is still present at Sunken Meadow SP (Suffolk). Just west
of traffic circle along fence line between two beach access pts. It's
feeding on the grass or foraging in shrubs along fence. Good luck if you go
and please keep posting reports, positive or negative.

[nysbirds-l] Varied Thrush

2010-12-04 Thread Patrick Santinello
Hi all..the Varied Thrush did not show for me today from 11:45AM-12:45PM
but, there were as many as three Accipiters present almost the entire time.
By all accounts the bird was still around as it had been seen around an hour
before unless, of course, it was on the lunch menu.

Had crushing views of the Fork-Tailed Flycatcher in Stamford this AM. Thanks
to Mardi for posting such great directions to see this bird (see CT list
serve).

Good Birding..
