[nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe - Jones Beach Coast Guard Station, Nassau County
While leading a walk for the New York State Young Birders Club at Jones Beach West End this morning, I found an Eared Grebe on the bay north of the Coast Guard Station boat basin. The bird was gradually drifting west and diving actively, last seen several minutes ago headed towards the inlet. [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe at Jamaica Bay West Pond
Eared Grebe currently on Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge’s West Pond, all the way to the east with swans. Diving frequently and barely staying above water. Also a Hudsonian Godwit briefly put down on the spit at the SE corner of the West Pond and then flew out into Jamaica Bay and into the marsh at Yellow Bar Hassock. Definitely some shorebird movement happening around the bay right now with the falling tide and rain. Good Birding -Doug Gochfeld. [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe, Pelham Bay Park, Bronx
While kayaking in the Bronx late this afternoon I found an Eared Grebe just South-West of the City island bridge along the Pelham Bay shore (i.e. just East of Rodman Neck). The current and waves in the channel together with the diving activity of the grebe made the documentation challenging by kayak but I got several pictures. The bird was observed together with an Horned Grebe which enabled nice comparisons. The 2 Grebes seemed to go back and forth between the bridge and Rodman neck. Moments after pressing send, the Grebe took off, heading west close to shore. It seemed to touch down somewhere to the west of the Ponqougue beach bathhouse, so it is likely still in the area. [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe--Point Lookout, Nassau County
NYS Birders, Tim Lenz and I observed an EARED GREBE today at Point Lookout, Nassau County. It was loosely associating with two Horned Grebes, immediately east of the easternmost of the three jetties. Two Harlequin Ducks were off the westernmost jetty. Many Common Eider and Bonaparte's Gulls were present, but we could not pull out more sought-after species. [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe still at J. Bay
A Bedford Audubon Society field trip to Jamaica Bay today (11/15) produced 54 species, including the continuing Eared Grebe, seen hanging with a small group of Horned Grebes and Buffleheads, on the bay just south of Bench 7 by the West Pd. [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe in East Hampton - Osprey in Watermill
Hi All, I gave an Eastern Long Island Audubon Walk from Montauk to East Hampton today. On our last stop at Main Beach,[south Main St.], East Hampton we had an Eared Grebe directly out from the parking lot in breakers some 25 yards from shore. It gave all of us multiple looks. We had just come from the Atlantic Ave. beachfront where an Eared had been spotted last weekend. At Montauk we had one female King Eider way to the left of the patio, a Turkey Vulture that came around the Point flying well offshore of the concession and small number of Northern Gannets,[we had the latter at all ocean stops]. All three Scoters are still well represented and the smaller Common Eider delegation seemed to be enjoying Montauk's balmy breezes. Seven Great Cormorants were at rest on the towers at the Lake Montauk jetties. There were 2 first winter Lesser Black Backed Gulls just inside the inlet there and Sally Newbert and Tom Moran saw an Iceland Gull at Gosman's on the beach just to the west. The Canvasbacks continued at the northwest corner of Fort Pond, but the 4 Redheads,[ found by Joe Lynch],this morning were with a flock of Ring necked Duck at the southernmost end of the pond by Montauk Highway .While Lazy Point was a bust, even for shorebirds, Hook Pond still had 8 Common Mergansers. Driving home as we past the Mill Pond in Watermill we spotted a FOS Osprey. Re: [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe at Amagansett (Suffolk Co.)
Dear NY Birders, With regards to the EARED GREBES recently found on Eastern Long Island, I have little doubt that there are actually two different individuals: the one at Ditch Plains, Montauk and the other at Amagansett. The location where Carl Starace found the Amagansett bird was the same place I found an apparent Eared Grebe on the waterfowl count in January. This bird dived within about 3 seconds of me finding it and I was unable to locate it again, but at the time I felt certain it was an Eared Grebe. (I did not put it on my waterfowl count list, however, b/c of the quick view.) Further, this location is only a few miles from where my party found an Eared Grebe on the CBC in December, so I suspect that there has been a single wandering individual that has wintered off East Hampton and Amagansett. I wonder if someone got a photo of the Montauk bird that could be compared by those of us who have seen the Amagansett bird so that we may evaluate the two-bird hypothesis. This individual is perhaps the same bird seen by birders further east off Atlantic Avenue the day before. This particular bird is not a well-marked individual, lacking dark auriculars and a prominent bump over the forehead (perhaps a function of posture). However, the bird was clearly smaller in direct comparison to Horned Grebes, with a thinner neck and bill. We reviewed a series of photos of Eared Grebe from Cornell University and noted photos of a number of individuals with similar features to the bird observed yesterday afternoon. Re: [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe, 3 Trumpeter Swans-Dunkirk Harbor, Chautauqua Co.
Photos of the Dunkirk Little Gull and Trumpeter Swans can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jmpawli10/ The Little Gull spent a fair amount of time foraging point blank off of the main pier on both the east and west sides amongst small numbers of Bonaparte's, while the Trumpeter Swans were initially along the outer side of the east inner breakwall, but later re-located to the outer breakwall. The Eared Grebe put in a brief appearance just west of the west inner breakwall before disappearing amongst the old wooden docks. Also present in the harbor was the previously reported juv. (and extremely tame) Red-throated Loon that was in very close to the main pier on the east side. [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe-Dunkirk 3/4/10
Art Buddington and I saw the Eared Grebe (originally seen by David Neuve of Silver Creek in February) closeby off the east side of the Central Avenue dock near the Main Street breakwall. It rested amongst the Coots most of the time. It is the first time that I can remember a Grebe resting with its head turned back which it did for only a few moments. The ice was separating from the shore ice well past Serval St. to the east and the harbor seems to have many fewer waterfowl than I can ever remember. Many Pied-billed Grebes and Cormorants were on the south side of the West Inner breakwall. The Greater Black-backed Gull continues as the apparent most numerous gull species in the harbor. We saw an adult and two subadult eagles on the ice outside the outer breakwall from a viewpoint near the DEC offices at Point Gratiot (former fish hatchery). A surprising amount of open water existed in the vicinity of the Buffalo Harbor. The rest of the lake appeared frozen from what we could see. [nysbirds-l] Eared Grebe, Glaucous Gull, Killdeer - Chautauqua Co.
The EARED GREBE and the "Blonde Gull" (1st-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL) originally found mid-week by Dave Neveu were both present today at Dunkirk Harbor in Chautauqua Co. with the Grebe frequenting the area in close just off the Main Pier between the docked Margaret Ann (boat) and the east inner breakwall. The Glaucous was making its rounds through the docks on both sides of the pier as well as the inner breakwalls, mostly mooching fish scraps from the Great Black-backed Gulls, but also readily took some bread which I threw out I threw out in hopes of drawing it in for photos (the local RB Gulls appreciated this too). A Horned Grebe was also present, along with a Ruddy Duck (seen by Bill Watson), and at least 9 BALD EAGLES that were sitting either out on the ice edge or in the tall oaks at the point just south of the harbor. At one point it was interesting to watch as two immature Eagles tirelessly pursued and then eventually captured a Ring-billed Gull out over the ice. Bill Watson and I then continued south into the towns of Clymer and French Creek in the very SW part of the state and near the French Creek preserve on Route 4 had a nice sooty black adult m. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and at Clymer Pond in the hamlet of Clymer, a pair of KILLDEER that were working the limited patches of grass and shoreline along the pond, and most probably were recent arrivals on last night's clear skies and SW winds.
