[nysbirds-l] East Hampton waterfowl

2022-12-19 Thread Bruce Horwith
The Canada geese are back in large numbers (300+) at Hook Pond, but none of
the uncommon geese species present. There was 1 individual that was
completely dirty white except for its head which was classic Canada. A few
mute swans, but no tundras, nor the trumpeter which has stayed put in
Montauk. About a dozen red-breasted mergs and same number of hooded, with 2
commons present. A few mallard, black duck and 2 gadwall.

I checked the jetty for purple sandpiper, but none there, so still haven't
seen any this fall season yet.

[nysbirds-l] East Hampton: orange-crowned warbler; pink-footed goose; snow geese

2021-12-09 Thread Bruce Horwith
The day started nicely with a small mixed flock of robins and cedar
waxwings in my yard. Decided to check Hook Pond for rare geese and tundra
swan, and though dipping on them, I was rewarded with an orange-crowned
warbler south of Hook Pond in some bayberry shrubs. At Wainscott Pond,
there were thousands of canada geese, 2 adult snow geese and at least 1
juvenile; a blue morph snow goose, and a pink-footed goose. I only got a
poor view that showed some pink on the bill and leg, but not as clearly as
I have seen it in the past (or wanted on this one), and brownish rather
than blackish tone to the neck and head. Kudos to Anthony Collerton who was
confident on the i.d. from some pics I sent him -- based on the brown
coloring and structure of the bill.

If anyone tries for the Wainscott birds (unsucessfully), you may also want
to try west on Daniel's Lane, where some of the Wainscott flock relocated
later in the day.

[nysbirds-l] East Hampton. purple sandpipers

2021-12-02 Thread Bruce Horwith
Slow early morning of fishing but compensated by a group of 8 purple
sandpipers on the first jetty east of the Georgica Pond connection to the
ocean. These are regular winter visitors here, but it may be the first time
I've had the pleasure of seeing them in 50+ degree weather.

[nysbirds-l] East Hampton Gulls (Glaucous and Lesser Black-backed)

2013-12-22 Thread Karen Rubinstein
There was a juvenile GLAUCOUS GULL and a second winter LESSER BLACKED
BACKED GULL among the 200+ gulls lounging on the northern shore (grassy
areas) at the more eastern end of Hook Pond in East Hampton Village,
Suffolk County. The area is best viewed from Dunemere Road, where you can
park on the side of the road adjacent to the gold course.

RE: [nysbirds-l] East Hampton, Main Beach: 16 April

2013-04-16 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Hi Peter and all,

It's great to see more data concerning last winter's remarkable southward
flight of Razorbills and its aftermath.

Regarding the westward spring migration of White-winged Scoters (and also of
Red-necked Grebes and Oldsquaws), this is a curious and incompletely understood
phenomenon, but it was discerned by the old time gunners during the late 19th
Century. See p. 285 here:

http://sora.unm.edu/sites/default/files/journals/auk/v008n03/p0279-p0290.pdf

More recently Dick Ferren and others have logged many days of spring seawatches
documenting these flights, so this is a good reminder for us to record flight
direction.

[nysbirds-l] East Hampton purple martins

2012-04-10 Thread Jane Ross

FOS for me: a dozen purple martins appeared at Georgica Pond this afternoon,
and quickly dispatched 2 starlings and a red wing blackbird. I expect more of
the colony will follow. Also spotted a surprising seven great blue herons and
a single blue winged teal on Georgica Cove.

Went to a small preserve on Stony Hill Rd in Amagansett, which can be decent
for spring migrants. Saw my FOS thrasher and a half dozen FOS towhees.
Apparently, Japanese barberry, an invasive weed that has taken over most of
this preserve, is acceptable to those birds.

2011-11-03 Thread Peter Max Polshek
On Tuesday, the other White-fronted Goose on Long Island's east end
was seen among the Canda Geese that are present in the large field on
the south side of Further Lane in East Hampton. This individual has
been present for several weeks.

[nysbirds-l] East Hampton Summer Tanagers and birds at Sammy's Beach

2011-06-13 Thread Anthony Collerton
Took a quick walk around Sammy's Beach in East Hampton yesterday. Best birds
for me were 2 Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows but the whole area was fairly
busy. The Least Tern colony is very active with 3 Roseate Terns also loafing
on the beach and at least 2 pairs of Piping Plovers. Horned Larks are also
very visible along the dirt road where they breed. Also present were American
Oystercatcher, Osprey, Great Egret, Brown Thrasher and numerous Prairie
Warblers. No sign of Clapper Rails unfortunately but it was mid-day.

With regards to the Summer Tanagers, they still seem to be present. I heard a
bird calling on Friday night, Ryan Walker saw the female in the yard on
Saturday and I saw the male on Sunday.

[nysbirds-l] East Hampton - Hampton Bays: Late Great Egret, Red-Throated Loons, Merlin

2010-11-28 Thread Luke Ormand
This morning the ocean in East Hampton held several *Red-Throated Loons*.
On Hook Pond were *Hooded Mergansers*, 1 *Belted Kingfishe*r and on dry
land nearby was a *Ring-necked Pheasant*. *Ruddy Ducks* were spotted off of
Cobb Isle Rd. in Water Mill and S*urf Scoters* were in small numbers at the
end of Ocean Rd. in Bridgehampton. At the Shinnecock Inlet a *Merlin* with
prey flew over the jetty and settled down on a fence post on the East Side
to eat breakfast as a hundred or so *Common Eider* swam in the waters just
west of the inlet. A very tardy *Great Egret* was spotted in Dune Rd.
amongst some* Black Ducks* and 8 *Guinea Hens* were spotted at a vacant
house on Red Creek Rd. just East of Squiretown Park. Photos can be seen

[nysbirds-l] East Hampton Report

2010-04-06 Thread Hugh McGuinness
Today while going to observe the stranded, apparently moribund,
immature Humpback Whale at East Hampton Main Beach (Suffolk Co.), I
found 4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL at Hook Pond. I haven't heard many (or
perhaps any) reports of this increasingly uncommon duck yet this
spring. Three WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS continue along the dirt road to
the south end of the pond.

Good birding to all!

Re: [nysbirds-l] East Hampton Geese

2010-01-23 Thread Angus Wilson
To follow up on Anthony Collerton's post, I also took a quick look at
the goose field on Further Lane in East Hampton (Suffolk Co.) late
this afternoon. After a few scans I picked out the four 1st-basic
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and seven CACKLING GEESE (continuing from
9 Jan). I've found that both species travel through the larger Canada
Geese as fairly cohesive groups, so if you happen upon one individual
it pays to follow it and the flock mates will 'appear', almost by
magic. I suspect the geese like this field because there is no hunting
or other disturbance. Indeed many birds were dozing in the late
afternoon sun. If birders stay on the roadside (i.e. not up against
the fence) and are careful not to slam car doors, the geese don't seem
too bothered.

[nysbirds-l] East Hampton Geese

2010-01-23 Thread Anthony Collerton
Made a quick stop at Further Lane early afternoon and picked up 3
White-fronted Geese and 6 Cackling Geese in the Canada flock in the
usual field. May well have been more things tucked away in the back.
