[nysbirds-l] Little Gull Staten Island
Salutations, I am not sure if this was cross posted as yet. Anthony Ciancimino reports that earlier this AM, Professor Veit found an Adult Little Gull that is currently in the channel between the point at Conference House Park & Perth Amboy, NJ. Foraging with a large number of Bonaparte’s Gulls. There were a couple of Little Gulls documented as well in DE yesterday so keep your eyes on those Bonaparte’s Gulls flock. The Little Gull has not been seen so far this morning, but the inlet remains very lively. In addition to a juvenile Bonaparte's Gull, an older bird was seen early this morning, along with single Black and Roseate Terns and many hundreds of common gulls, terns, and shorebirds. Sorry for the late post on this, but the Little Gull was seen yesterday around 11:30-12:00 at Montauk Point. RE:[nysbirds-l] Little Gull+ Montauk
The biggest surprise at Montauk Point this morning was a Dovekie that flew in from the south, passed back and forth close below the concession building, sat briefly, then flew back out to the south. Other highlights there included the continuing adult Little Gull (two brief appearances), immature Glaucous Gull, and larger numbers of Razorbills (about 80). An Eared Grebe on Lake Montauk, visible from the south end, was an exciting new find. The Pink-footed Goose continues at Montauk Downs gold course, along with two Snow Geese, and the number of distinguishable Iceland Gulls at the Lake Montauk Inlet has been revised up to at least seven (two juvs this morning were both paler than yesterday's juv; two distinguishable TYs, an adult-like bird with a dull, black-tipped bill, and a full adult). [nysbirds-l] Little Gull re-found Upper Lisle County Park Today 4/7/17
The LITTLE GULL originally found by George Chiu yesterday at Dorchester Park was near the rusty bridge in the channel at Upper Lisle County Park this afternoon. (an ebird hotspot) The bird was with several BONAPARTE'S GULLS. I spotted it by the white primary feathers near the back of the bird. The bird showed dark underwings while preening and of course when taking off. Also apparent was the gray from the mantle to the nape. See http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S35762089 for more photos. These aren't that good since the bird was more distant and on the water. The bird flushed with the entire flock of BOGUs and headed back down the channel to the upper end of the reservoir. With north winds again tonight, the bird may stick around. The biggest problem is access. Upper lisle is severely flooded and you can't get a vantage point to see down the channel. Also if the bird flies back down to Dorchester, your best bet is trying from Kiebal road since Dorchester Park is closed and they won't allow anyone even to walk down into the park. Anyway, a great new bird for Broome County and another excellent find by George Chiu!
[nysbirds-l] Little Gull yes on Staten Island
Just refound the (?) bird very far out. I am at Conference House Park looking towards the flats of South Amboy. There are hundreds of birds circling out there. Hard to get an accurate count but would guess about 500 birds. Of note, 2 were reported from there a few hours ago on the Jersey side. [nysbirds-l] Little Gull at Jones Inlet (Nassau Co.)
I had not been to Jones Inlet since the Southern Nassau CBC and wanted to see what changes in the Inlet's bird populations may have occurred as a result of the recent cold spell. Upon arrival at the Fisherman's Parking Lot there were clearly more Bonaparte's Gulls then my early January visit. After scoping for a few minutes a good size flock of Bonies (60+) was seen feeding on the northwest side of the Inlet. In the flock was a diminutive gull with a bold black "M" on the upperwings, and a dusky cap - a first winter Little Gull. The flock scattered and continued to feed up and down the Inlet, and the Little Gull was not relocated. There were good numbers of Common and Red-throated Loons in the Inlet, but I was unable to find a Pacific Loon. Other birds of note were a single Razorbill and one Common Eider. [nysbirds-l] Little Gull at Point Lookout
I heard from Tom Burke that he and Gail found an adult LITTLE GULL (with about 100 Bonaparte's Gulls) late today out on the ocean off Point Lookout Town Park. There was a frenzy of large gulls at the mouth of Jones Inlet earlier in the day, but they appeared to be all Herring. Still RAZORBILL activity on the inside. Tom found one in the channel this morning, looking out from the Short Beach boat basin, possibly the same one that I observed a while later, moving toward the inlet in the vicinity of the fisherman's lot.
