Continuing in the water, Greater Scaup (200+ in the channel), Lesser Scaup (Bedell Creek), 15 Bufflehead, 5 Hooded Merganser, 10 Red-breasted Merganser, 6 Red-throated Loon, 2 Horned Grebe and a male and female breeding plumage Common Goldeneye. Stopped by after lunch, still freezing, 31 Degrees. Some birds by the feeders, namely; White-throat, Fox and Song Sparrow plus Mourning Dove, Cardinal and usual House Sparrows. No birds in the marsh except for a Great Blue Heron and flyover Northern harrier and Bald Eagle In the channel, there were 1,000+ Scaup in three groups, mainly Greater with some Lesser. Mike picked out a single male Redhead that we both photographed with 1000 mm lenses and then enlarged to confirm the ID. The new hand held cameras are wonderful. I’m thawing out. Other first of the season at this place were RUBY and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. A HERMIT THRUSH continues. Lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers and a dozen Swamp Sparrows along the trails. The marshes had Both Yellowlegs, both Egrets, a Great Blue Heron, a flyover Black-crowned Night-Heron and little else. The resident Belted Kingfisher was reported. The day started slow but picked up considerably when Mike Farina and I saw an adult and juvenile HUDSONIAN GODWIT feeding. Both birds soon flew off. Among the few Shorebird species was a group of 12 KILLDEER. The trail along the BACK fence had a LINCOLN , several SWAMP and SONG SPARROWS as well as SAVANNAH SPARROWS around the main trail plus a SALTMARSH SPARROW in the marsh. In the dune area there were single YELLOW-RUMPED and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER. Also, a very brief look at a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. Other birds of interested were COOPER’S HAWK, GREAT BLUE HERON, BELTED KINGFISHER, CAROLINA WREN, NORTHERN FLICKER and BROWN THRASHER. Very windy, gusts to 21 mph. No Sparrows seen or heard in the marsh. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER posed next to a SEMIPALMATED (nice size comparison in the photo), first for me as all the prior reports have come from later in the day after I left. All together 11 species of shorebirds. CLAPPER RAILS were much subdued but one managed to walk around in the open whale a few others called. The MARSH WREN continues singing in the reeds next to the west side of the pond., singing three feet away, burroughed in and I couldn’t find it. A WILLOW FLYCATCHER continues and can be heard at the end of the boardwalk on the golf course side. The Thunderbirds are practicing for this weekend’s holiday show and flew over so I could take their picture. Hey, they’re birds. Very windy, gusts to 21 mph. No Sparrows seen or heard in the marsh. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER posed next to a SEMIPALMATED (nice size comparison in the photo), first for me as all the prior reports have come from later in the day after I left. All together 11 species of shorebirds. CLAPPER RAILS were much subdued but one managed to walk around in the open whale a few others called. The MARSH WREN continues singing in the reeds next to the west side of the pond., singing three feet away, burroughed in and I couldn’t find it. A WILLOW FLYCATCHER continues and can be heard at the end of the boardwalk on the golf course side. The Thunderbirds are practicing for this weekend’s holiday show and flew over so I could take their picture. Hey, they’re birds. The Osprey breeding has been terminated (eggs destroyed), so the barriers on the path have come down and one can walk around the pond. Ospreys are still perching on the platform and surrounding perches. Clapper Rails are very active calling in the marsh but stayed mostly hidden. Seaside Sparrows were also actively calling as were a Saltmarsh Sparrow. A Marsh Wren sang along the path by the west side of the pond while a Clapper Rail and Seaside Sparrow were calling just beyond in the marsh. All these marsh birds require patience to see. A Turkey Vulture flew over the marsh early in the morning heading NE. The first Ospreys of the year are the pair nesting on the south end of the property. Yesterday additional Ospreys nesting on poles and boxes on 4 sites in the marsh islands appeared. The resident pair are a continuing female (check the band) and a brand new very skittish young male. Mike Farina, the biologist on site, has established a tolerance perimeter as a result and isolated the trails with fencing to limit access to the nest area. Hopefully, the male will get used to people and the fences can come down. Meantime please honor them and take advantage of the chairs and benches provided. A GREAT EGRET showed up early in the week (one day) and a SNOWY EGRET was there yesterday and today. The only other resident migrants so far are TREE SWALLOWS and RED-WINGED PLACKBIRDS. Marine Nature Study Area. 24 Aug I spent the morning in the dry part of the facility, ignoring the marsh although a fully grown CLAPPER RAIL was observed from the parking lot. A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD is hanging around. It appears in the blue salvia along the fence to the west and in the canna lilies off the parking lot. Today it was seen in both spots, but only stayed a few minutes at a time in each place before moving on before returning. Chairs have been conveniently placed at both places, so one can relax while waiting for the hummer to show. The watchers today all had big lenses and most managed satisfactory photos. CLAPPER RAIL, WILLET and GREEN HERON adults feeding with young . Also noted, a young YELLOW WARBLE. So, There has been nesting success. Two pairs of SALTMARSH SPARROWS bouncing around in the marsh——didn’t notice any young yet. Other birds of note, a CEDAR WAXWING and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER. CLAPPER RAIL, WILLET and GREEN HERON adults feeding with young . Also noted, a young YELLOW WARBLE. So, There has been nesting success. Two pairs of SALTMARSH SPARROWS bouncing around in the marsh——didn’t notice any young yet. Other birds of note, a CEDAR WAXWING and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER. The TRICOLORED HERON continues in the cut close to the office (surrounded by photographers, all very well behaved). It’s breeding time in the marsh. So, things are quiet. However, SALTMARSH SPARROWS are active, although Seaside Sparrows are not around nor are Marsh Wrens. Clapper Rails were quiet today, probably on nests., A few WILLETS can be picked out in the marsh and mostly silent. A WILLOW FLYCATCHER was singing from the top of the trees by the golf course. A single GLOSSY IBIS appeared in full breeding plumage. The bill was surrounded with prominent white skin, looking like a White-faced Ibis in the distance. Unfortunately, it had a dark eye and no red on the legs. Land birds included NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, HERMIT THRUSH, EASTERN TOWHEE and CEDAR WAXWINGS. At one point, all the Brant and Gulls erupted into the air. We waited as the Brant settled down. But, the Gulls continued high in the air over Meadow island. Eventually, a spec high above them appeared from the NW. Glasses picked up a circling BALD EAGLE heading E. When the birds go crazy, patience and diligence is required. The wait was rewarding. Migrating Eagles are always nice to see. Overcast day after the rain ended. Tide fairly high. Few birds but a cluster of sparrows along the path, by the bench on east ide of pond. It included 2 Song, 1 Swamp, 1 Savannah and 3 House Sparrows; 2 Saltmarsh Sparrows were there just off the path. Good looks at both, but not Nelson’s. MNSA, Oceanside 26 May Yesterday's storm coupled with a new moon high tide completely flooded the marsh. It probably also washed out any nests already there. This morning the marsh was still mostly under water just after high tide when I arrived.. As a result the land birds normally in the marsh were mostly confined the the path edges. Around the pond marsh birds were calling and/or singing and also nicely visible. There were a number of shorebirds also feeding.. MNSA 1 Feb. I stopped by Oceanside this morning. The usual uncommon wintering birds have been absent for a while, no Clapper Rail or Marsh Sparrows. However, there was a change yesterday continuing into today, American Robins have fond the holly tree (covered with berries) in front of the office. A big increase from yesterday. Over a hundred Robins were circling the tree and feeding`--maybe many more. A roaming flock or early migrants? If the latter, this is about 10 days early. The Peregrine Falcon box has been refurbished and fresh gravel has been placed on the floor. Today, the cam was showing a pair making breeding advances inside. Spring is on the way. Along the walk, there were a half dozen COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, a YELLOW WARBLER, 6 PALM WARBLERS (western) and a SAVANNAH SPARROW. In the marsh were 2 SEASIDE SPARROWS and 6 SALTMARSH SPARROWS. Marine Nature Study Area 2 September Hot, muggy slow day with only a half dozen shorebird species. Both a GREEN HERON and a CLAPPER RAIL moved lazily and posed for pictures along with a non-spotted SPOTTED SANDPIPER. A ROYAL TERN also flew by and posed, A YELLOW WARBLER and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT continued around the path. A marsh sparrow also continues in the marsh but got away before we could get its id The first migrants for the upland location were a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and EASTER TOWHEE. Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 19 July Overcast day at very low tide. A few shorebirds were present, namely Semipalmated Plover, Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper and Short-billed Dowitcher. I observed 5 widely scattered Saltmarsh Sparrows. After the spring/summer high tides, Seaside Sparrow nests were flooded and the sparrows seemed to have left. I also didn't see or hear any Clapper Rails this morning. Forster's Terns, Egrets and Night-Herons continue. There was a female or young Yellow Warbler along the trail by the pond. I decided to try my luck again and look for migrants and CLAPPER RAILS. As usual, there were 10 CLAPPER RAILS displaying on the trails offering great views. They flew away when I approached them. I also found 2 FORSTER’S TERNS and 5 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS. Watch out for the CANADA GOOSE at the end of the trail – it was defending it’s nest and tried to bite me. Great day to be out. There were single Seaside and Saltmarsh Sparrows at Gardiner County Park, in Bayshore, yesterday morning, along with a couple of Brown Thrashers. Marine Nature Study Area 11 Apr I stopped by this morning to look for GLOSSY IBIS. There were 5. They finally flew off towards the golf course. In the puddles to the left (east) of the pond, there were 2 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, shorebirds all with yellow legs, a color appropriate for the Spring. In the channel, a number of LAUGHING GULLS flew by, my FOS. In the channel were the usual BRANT, BUFFLEHEAD, RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS. Special today there were 2 RED-NECKED GREBE. Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 2 April Both GREAT EGRET and SNOWY EGRET were feeding in the marsh this morning. An adult LITTLE BLUE HERON flew by in the distance. A few GREATER YELLOWLEGS were scattered around. OSPREY pairs were seen on two nest platforms and a PEREGRINE FALCON was seen atop the nest box in the marsh (there are now 4 eggs visible in the cam). Little else of note. Work on the replacement boardwalk continues as well as for the display sign housings destroyed by Sandy. (Fortunately the displays themselves were removed in advance of the storm). Looking forward to an improved updated facility. For a change, a decent mix of shorebirds and sparrows. Starting with the shorebirds:-BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, PECTORAL, STILT AND LEAST SANDPIPERS,.GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Land birds:- EASTERN PHOEBE, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, the only warbler, but about 20 of them; WHITE-CROWNED, WHITE-THROATED, SONG, SWAMP and SAVANNAH SPARROWS. (Mike Farina, staff biologist, posted the picture on his blog.) Other birds of note were a pair of SALTMARSH SPARROWS, 2 GREEN HERONS and about two dozen SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS among the few shorebirds.
