[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck, Santapogue Creek, Lindenhurst (Suffolk County)

2017-12-24 Thread Peter Morris
There is a Tufted Duck mixed in with a Scaup flock at Santapogue Creek
(Suffolk). The bird was near the island where the Long-billed Dowitchers are
most frequently seen half way down Venetian Boulevard, towards Venetian Shores
park. There are several small flocks of scaup spread out along the creek so
some searching may be required.

If people try for this bird it is important that they DO NOT enter the property
of the small marina adjacent to the island. This is private property and the
owner has been quite clear that birders should only view from the roadside.

Of additional interest in the flocks present on site are Ring-necked Duck x
Scaup sp hybrid and an apparent Tufted Duck x Greater Scaup hybrid.

Despite having been absent during the freezing weather of last weekends Captree
CBC, there are still a small group of Long-billed Dowitchers in the area.

2017-01-30 Thread Ken Feustel
A female or immature male ( a relatively long tuft if seen from a good angle)
Tufted Duck was sleeping with a large (900+) mixed scaup flock on Swan Lake in
Patchogue around 12:00PM. Also present were a pair of Wood Duck. This flock was
by far the largest flock of scaup we have seen on any freshwater pond this
winter. There were a decent number of scaup on Patchogue Lake (150+) as well -
perhaps some recent arrivals. i will post some photos of the sleeping Tufted
Duck on my flickr site later today.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - Crown Point State Park, NY

2017-01-27 Thread Richard Guthrie
After splendid views of the Ross's Gull at Tupper Lake, NY, and a
frolicking good time with the Gray Jays at Newcomb (thanks, Joan), our
group of four went down to Lake Champlain and had great views of the drake
Tufted Duck easily visible from the overlooks at Crown Point State Park
(that is after painstaking efforts to locate, then re-locate, the bird
amongst a throng of scaup and goldeneyes). From previous reports, the raft
of ducks has a habit of shifting between the New York side and the Vermont
side of the lake. Fortunately for us, they were on the New York side giving
us the benefit of viewing with the late afternoon sun behind us casting
most favorable lighting conditions for enjoying all those striking birds
out on the water. We also had a magnificent adult bald Eagle fly overhead,
a female N. Harrier feeding on something up close to us in a field nearby
and unfortunately, a freshly killed Barred Owl beside the road down from
the park proper.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck-Conesus Lake east side

2016-04-04 Thread Wasilco, Mike R (DEC)
Around 1230 today I found an adult male tufted duck feeding with the mixed
flock of redheads, scaup and ringnecks close to shore on the east side of
Conesus Lake just south of Stella Maris. Nice head plume and solid black back
make him easy to pick out when he surfaces.

Eurasian wigeon still present at Conesus Inlet from east side overlook pond,
along with pectoral sandpiper and at least 9 snipe, and a good mix of other
ducks.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - Patchogue Lake (Suffolk)

2016-02-21 Thread Derek Rogers
Just located a Tufted Duck on Patchogue Lake. Currently trying to determine
whether or not this is the Blue Point Avenue bird that I found on 12 Feb.

The proximity between both locations would favor the same individual but I'm
getting the sense this may be a different bird (longer, more intact tuft from
all angles, more white on flanks). Closest viewing is from the south side of
West Roe Blvd. looking south from the bridge. It's worth noting that a fishing
boat spooked a flock of Scaup from their usual location at the very south end
of the lake along the north side of Holbrook Road, so it's likely they'll
return to this spot.

If anyone follows up and gets decent photos I'd be grateful if you could send
them along to me as this can be important in determining the number of Suffolk
Tufteds we are dealing with.

Best,
Derek Rogers

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - Blue Point, NY (Suffolk)

2016-02-12 Thread Derek Rogers
At the close of the day I decided to check some of the local docks along the
Great South Bay while there was still some daylight left. I ended up finding
several large rafts of scaup at the south end of Blue Point Avenue (Blue Point,
NY). The vast majority of scaup were out of viewing range but luckily there
were a fair number inshore that allowed for close-range scrutiny. Within this
group was a single Tufted Duck. Description and photos can be viewed in my
eBird checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S27463081

Hopefully this group of scaup sticks around for a while as there are plenty
more birds to detail! The majority of Scaup were Greater (as we’d expect) but
there were also a fair number of Lesser involved as well (presumably influenced
by the nearby frozen lakes and ponds). I learned through conversations with
some of the locals that the scaup have been present, and in even larger
numbers, for the past couple of days. Its also worth noting that the Blue Point
Tufted Duck differs from the Lake Capri/Venetian Shores bird in several ways,
the most obvious being the shorter tuft.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck, Lake Capri, West Islip

2015-12-13 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Hi all,

Having seen a hybrid Tufted x scaup on this very pond, we studied this bird
quite closely.

My impression was that all features appeared consistent with Tufted Duck, and
none seemed indicative of either scaup species.

In particular, the bird was distinctly small--no larger larger than adjacent
Lesser Scaup, and obviously smaller than an adjacent Greater Scaup. The rounded
head shape seemed right for Tufted and wrong fro Lesser (and especially
Ring-necked). The bill pattern looked good for Tufted to me.

The shape of the pale flanks appeared good for Tufted Duck, and the dark back,
although not black, was not finely vermiculated, as in Tufted x scaup hybrids
I've seen. The white undertail is, I gather, a Tufted feature; not sure of its
prevalence among scaup.

Finally, the tuft seemed longer than on hybrids I've seen, but I'm not familiar
enough with Tufted plumages to say whether this is an immature or an eclipse
male.

I dumped a bunch of poor photos at the end of this album, and would appreciate
feedback from those more familiar than I with these birds:

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck, King Eider, Niagara River source

2014-01-09 Thread WilliamWatsonSr
January 9 - A female Tufted Duck was found about 150 yards before the
end of Bird Island Pier (where it is elevated and the cable railings end.
Initially it was seen at about 11:15 to 11:45 AM at the edge of the ice about
40 yards from the pier. It was close to the New York side and a little
more than a mile south of the Peace Bridge.

The immature male King Eider was about 100 yards down stream (north) of
Nichols Marine. Nichols Marine is about a half mile North of the Peace
Bridge in Fort Erie, Ontario.

Also seen were:
5,900 Greater Scaup...that can make it difficult to find the
Tufted Duck
430 Canvasbacks
110 Redheads
1,100 Common Mergansers about 80% off Squaw Island
700 Red-breasted Mergansers
Hooded Merganser
1,500 Bufflehead
5 Tundra Swans
4 Long-tailed Ducks
Double-crested Cormorant
3,200 Common Goldeneye
2 Ring-necked Ducks

Best Wishes for Great Birding,

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck YES, Thayer's Gull NO, Thick-billed Murre NO -LI/NYC, 1/19

2013-01-19 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,

Ron and Ben Barkley and I visited some spots today around the Nassau

The Tufted Duck was still frequenting Saint John's Pond in Cold Spring Harbor
(Nassau/Suffolk co.) as of this morning. No Eurasian Wigeon on the pond today.

A check of the jetties at Point Lookout (Nassau co.) revealed few gulls, likely
thanks to a strong onshore wind. About fifty gulls were gathered in the Point
Lookout State Park parking lot (of Grace's Warbler fame)  and quite a few were
also at the Jones Beach jetty across the inlet.

Speaking of gulls, there are still hundreds of gulls frequenting the Norman
Levy preserve (the landfill) off the Meadowbrook Parkway in Merrick (Nassau
co.). The park took a hit from Sandy and was closed as of a couple of weeks
ago, but they were planning to reopen "mid-late January." Gulls may also be
viewed with luck from the baseball field area just immediately to the east of
the landfill, where there is a small Monk Parakeet colony (two there today) in
the stadium lights.

No Barrow's at Jamaica Bay (at low tide) today. And the murre in the Dead Horse
Bay area was not visible from the beach south of the marina across the road
from Floyd Bennett Field (Brooklyn).

Best,

Hey folks,

If anyone is planning to or would like to drive out to look for the
Tufted Duck in Cold Spring Harbor tomorrow, Saturday, 1/19, from
central Brooklyn, please drop me a line. If you're going and have a
spare seat, I'd be happy to chip in for gas. If no one has a spare
seat, then I'll drive out myself, in which case I'll have probably
three seats for other folks.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck - yes Western Grebe - yes Nobel Laureate - Yes

2013-01-15 Thread Robert Bate
I arrived in Cold Spring around 8:15 and found the Tufted Duck in the
company of the 17 Ring-necked Ducks and the Redhead on the pond behind
St John's Church. The Cold Spring Harbor Bald Eagle flew in, perched
in a tree by the lake, and stayed a few minutes before flying off in
the direction of the harbor. I then went to look for the previously
reported Eurasian Wigeon in the harbor as there were no wigeons on the
St John's pond. A birder was already on the wall on the lower end
west side of the harbor where most of the waterfowl were. He was
leaving as I arrived but when I got out with my scope and binoculars
he stopped and approached me. He introduced himself though I didn't
catch the name. An elderly man, he referred to the American Wigeon as
the "Bald Pate", a name I haven't heard but once or twice. He said
that he was interested in birds before he was interested in science
which I though a common enough pattern though my jaw dropped when he
said he was one of the people who discovered the double helix. "What
was your name again?" I asked - "James Watson" he said and added with
a smile, "I didn't think you heard it the first time." It made my
day, as a science fan it was a thrill to meet one of the stars of
science. Thank you Mr. Watson.

BTW, I did find the Eurasian Wigeon in the harbor, dull red head but
definitely red.

After this I made straight for the Ponquogue Bridge area for the
Western Grebe. getting there around 9:45 and I got lucky. The grebe
was in the gereral area west of the bridge on the northern half of the
bay. I parked in the boat launch lot off Dune Rd and walked all the
way out onto the elevated portion of the old bridge remains and
scanned the bay from there looking under the bridge to the northwest.
The grebe was feeding actively so I had to work to relocate it when it
dove. A number of other birders including Arie Gilbert and Eric
Miller were looking for the bird a little later but we couldn't refind
it from that location; I hope they got it from their next location.

On my return trip I birded Belmont Lake and St Charles Cemetery where
I found the continuing Barnacle Goose but no Cackling or Greater
White-fronted Geese.

[nysbirds-l] Tufted Duck Yes, Redhead Yes

2013-01-15 Thread Cesar Castillo
For anyone still interested, the Tufted Duck is still at the pond by Saint
Johns Church in Cold Spring Harbor off route 25A.
Also at the pond you can still find a Redhead duck.
Others are reporting a Bald Eagle that has frequented the pond for the last two
weeks.  Apparently it alternated between the pond and the harbor.

necked ducks very close to the fence behind the church. It drifted off to the
right (west) and probably disappeared behind a large fallen tree near the
shore. I'm not sure because we were distracted by a Eurasian-type Widgeon,
either a male coming out of eclipse or a hybrid - the sides were similar to the
nearby American Widgeon. The tuft was wet and not sticking out at all - in fact
you could see the wet tuft feathers contrasting with the rest of the dark head
feathers. It could be missed with its head tucked in except for the white sides
and black back.
