[nysbirds-l] COUCH'S KINGBIRD Manhattan NOW

2014-12-26 Thread Doug Gochfeld
Jacob Drucker refound the Manhattan kingbird on Hudson St. Between Bank and
Bethune Streets. It has vocalized a bunch, and is a Couch's Kingbird, which
makes it one of only a couple of records of this species for the northeast.

It is currently hawking insects off the sunlit side o the apartment
building on the west side of the street, between the fire escapes and the
two trees adjacent to the building.

Good Birding

[nysbirds-l] Couch's Kingbird Manhattan N.Y. City 12/26/'14

2014-12-26 Thread Thomas Fiore
Friday 26 Dec. 2014 - West Village area in Manhattan, N.Y. City

The COUCH'S KINGBIRD (heard giving diagnostic calls and very well
photographed by many) was last being seen where reported as posted by
Gabriel Willow, the building taking the full length of a short city
block between Jane Street Horatio Street, along the western side of
Washington Street, in Manhattan's (New York City) West Village
neighborhood, this specific location a few short blocks south of the
western terminus of West 14 Street, from to which there is access
for the West Side Highway that runs along Manhattan's far west edge
adjacent the Hudson River (connecting to Holland, Lincoln, Brooklyn
Battery Tunnels, and the G.W. Bridge uptown).

The Kingbird was sought by a small number of us at various locations
within a few short blocks very early this a.m., thanks to Jacob
Drucker Lila Fried the kingbird was seen for a good 15 min's. or
more just north of Bleecker Street Hudson St. (which becomes Eighth
Ave. as it gets to W. 14 Street), but after a number of us fast-walked
to Jacob Lila's alternate location around 8:15 a.m. or so, for
some great views for a short time,

the kingbird flew around the corner, west, as we soon saw, right to
the (previously-noted building - first paragraph!), where more more
observers were arriving for great views, the bird perching on
balconies, in trees immediately in front of the building, quite
actively appearing to feed on minute or at least small insect life,
with temp. around 40+ F. in the bright sun.

Also present in the area were (at least) some American Robins, a
brightly-plumaged Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (at above bldg.), White-
throated Sparrows, Northern Cardinal, N. Mockingbird, and assorted
other species - perhaps a Sharp-shinned or Cooper's Hawk, briefly in
the earliest hour, before the kingbird was being seen by us. Certainly
other birds of interest may be in the vicinity and it would be
interesting to note all of them as well as the amazing visitor from
the west. Thanks to all present who were so helpful in searching
immediately putting word out amongst the wandering small group of
observers.

Hopefully the building neighborhood residents will appreciate the
rarity fascination of such a bird in their midst, and all who were
passing in the early a.m. hours today seemed quite interested. The
'night' shift doorman at the building had been informed that a
few (!) more folks could be on the way, that NO one is at all
trying to peep in windows or otherwise disturb building or
neighborhood residents. (and thanks, Shane B.)

best of luck to all who try, and if possible do allow a couple of
hours for the attempt, as this bird can (we now know) wander a bit at
times (but as Gabriel's post indicated, it has been regular at the
Washington St. address for a month or maybe more now)...

Please post updates on yes/no sightings, and other details should
their be additional locations noted, esp. if no updates have been
offered in a few hours or on any given day, thanks.

good urban birding!

Manhattan

west.  Thanks to all present who were so helpful in
searching immediately putting word out amongst the
wandering small group of observers.

  Hopefully the building neighborhood residents
will appreciate the rarity fascination of such a
bird in their midst, and all who were passing in the
early a.m. hours today seemed quite interested. The
'night' shift doorman at the building had been informed
that a "few" (!) more folks could be on the way,
that NO one is at all trying to peep in windows or
otherwise disturb building or neighborhood residents.
(and thanks, Shane B.)

best of luck to all who try, and if possible do allow
a couple of hours for the attempt, as this bird can (we
now know) wander a bit at times (but as Gabriel's post
indicated, it has been regular at the Washington St.
address for a month or maybe more now)...

Please post updates on yes/no sightings, and other
details should their be additional locations noted, esp.
if no updates have been offered in a few hours or on any
given day, thanks.

[nysbirds-l] 9 Snowy Owls!/Black-backed Woodpecker/Gray Jays more

2014-12-26 Thread Joan Collins
12/26/14 Long Lake (Hamilton Co.)

A Mink ran across the road in front of my car on Sabattis Circle Road! Two
Gray Jays were at Sabattis Bog. This is the second day we've had a Pine
Siskin (just one!) at our feeders. It arrived in the high wind/rain storm.
We hit a high of over 50 Amer. Goldfinches at our feeders yesterday (less
today). This is a very unusual species to have at this time of year at our
location, although with the climate so greatly changed, I'm not sure what
usual is anymore.

Ruffed Grouse are regularly observed along Sabattis Circle Road - often
feeding on buds high in deciduous trees. A few Snow Buntings are still in
our area.

I hear the Flying Squirrel almost every night on our baby monitor (used to
bring in the outside sounds) - I can hear it smack into the feeders!
Sometimes I am awake enough to go observe it. It reminds me of a gremlin!

12/23/14 Chaumont, Point Peninsula, and Cape Vincent (Jefferson Co.)

I drove by Sabattis Bog on my way to Jefferson Co. on Tuesday and found the
pair of Gray Jays. I arrived in the Chaumont area in the early afternoon.
I was hoping to see a Snowy Owl, and I was thrilled to find NINE! It
appears to be another remarkable irruptive year for this species in our
area. I photographed 8 of the 9 owls (it was too dark by the time I found
the 9th to take photos) with my scope and iPhone attachment, and Canon SX50.
I posted 16 photos to my Facebook page at:
https://www.facebook.com/AdirondackAvian . Eight of the nine Snowy Owls
were active and one was snoozing. I was enthralled watching their behavior
- preening, listening, hunting, and I watched one regurgitate a pellet
(photo number 11). I took over 700 photos Tuesday afternoon! Since I was
using two different cameras, my photos ended up in different areas on the
computer - what I found interesting is that I could match the owls by their
distinctive patterns of markings. Four of the nine were very lightly
marked, with one that was particularly white. The very white owl reminded
me of Casper the Ghost! Four were darkly marked, and I didn't have a good
view of the ninth since it was getting very dark. In one area, there was a
Snowy Owl on a pole, and 10 poles away, there was another. I was watching
the second owl when it appeared to become agitated. A third Snowy Owl was
flying through its territory. The second Snowy Owl took off after the third
owl and chased it to what must have been an acceptable distance away and
then it flew right back to the same telephone pole!

I was somewhat surprised to find completely open water off Point Peninsula.
There was a lot of waterfowl. Point Peninsula is such a beautiful spot and
the lighting is always what captivates me - it was ethereal. Here are some
of the species found from Chaumont to Point Peninsula to Cape Vincent:

Tundra Swan - 5; 4 adults and one juvenile

Gadwall

Bufflehead

Common Goldeneye

Red-breasted Merganser

Wild Turkey

Red-tailed Hawk - 7

Rough-legged Hawk - 7; 1 dark morph

Snowy Owl - 9

Short-eared Owl - heard in a location where we observed them last year

American Kestrel - 3

Snow Bunting - large flock flying

12/22/14 Sabattis Circle Road (Hamilton Co.)

An adult Northern Shrike was perched along Sabattis Circle Road. At
Sabattis Bog, I found a male Black-backed Woodpecker and two Gray Jays. The
woodpecker was very close and I took many photos (posted to Facebook).

12/19/14 Sabattis Circle Road

I found two different Ruffed Grouse, 3 Gray Jays (1 along the road and 2 at
the bog), and 3 Snow Buntings flew around the bog.

12/16/14 Route 30 and Sabattis Circle Road

4 Gray Jays: Two Gray Jays were perched together at the top of a conifer
along Route 30 in Long Lake. Another pair was found at Sabattis Bog.

12/9/14 Long Lake

A Merlin was flying around the Long Lake beach area, then flew across the
lake into tall pines (where they nest each year).

12/7/14 Long Lake and Tupper Lake (Hamilton and Franklin Counties)

I found two Gray Jays at Sabattis Bog. An adult Bald Eagle was perched
along the causeway in Tupper Lake. After an Audubon meeting at the Wild
Center, Pat and John Thaxton and I went to Spring Pond Bog. We found a Gray
Jay at the gate location - the caretaker feeds them. We found two more Gray
Jays on a side road in boreal forest. John started to whistle a few
(human!) songs and one of the Gray Jays seemed to become enchanted and
followed him around! We also heard two Boreal Chickadees.

On a 12/5/14 tour with two birders, one from NYC and one from Westchester
Co., we visited boreal habitat in Long Lake, Newcomb, and Minerva. Here are
some of the species found:

Ruffed Grouse - high up in a deciduous tree near Sabattis Bog

Black-backed Woodpecker - 1 male at Sabattis Bog

Pileated Woodpecker - a few heard, and one observed flying

Gray Jay - 2 at Sabattis Bog

Common Raven - several

Boreal Chickadee - 2 along the Roosevelt Truck Trail,

[nysbirds-l] eBird.org: Merging Personal Location with Hotspot

2014-12-26 Thread Ben Cacace
One thing with personal locations is that they cannot be queried by any of
the eBird.org at levels below the individual county like this
http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspot/L3238737 for the 'West Village, Manhattan'
hotspot.

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to My eBird select Manage My Locations in the right panel
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter P under Type*)
click Edit
— Select the Merge button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Make sure the checkmark is selected for Delete after merging
— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.

[nysbirds-l] RFI Cassin's Kingbird

2014-12-26 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

I know the Cassin's Kingbird at Floyd Bennet is old news now, especially
given the surprising appearance of the Couch's Kingbird in Manhattan, but I
would very much appreciate continued updates on the presence (or absence)
of the Cassin's Kingbird that has been hanging around the community gardens
at Floyd Bennet Field (missed it this evening, would like to try again in
the next few days).

Many thanks!

Best,

[nysbirds-l] Couch's Kingbird

A few photo's of the remarkable West Village COUCH'S KINGBIRD can be viewed
here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jgluth_brb/sets/72157647619226294/

Luckily the bird was in view in the park adjoining 99 Jane Street when we (Tim
Dunn, Pete Morris, and I) arrived, and remained so for ~15 minutes before
flying west toward the Hudson River down Jane Street. It was seen again,
briefly, ~30 minutes later as it flew over heading east toward Greenwich St. In
addition to the locations kindly provided by Ben Cacace and Arie Gilbert, the
bird is probably also foraging on the many rooftop gardens in the neighborhood,
so keep your eyes to the skies if you try for it. Good luck to all who do.

[nysbirds-l] eBird Hotspot - Couch's Kingbird Location on Washington St.

2014-12-26 Thread Ben Cacace
I received a note from Shane Blodgett that the original location where the
Couch's Kingbird was found and has returned to on occasion is called
Washington Commons Park. I was reluctant to enter a hotspot for a random
street that would never get visited again after the kingbird eventually
moves on.

'Washington Commons Park' between Jane and Horatio St. along Washington St.
has been created and will be available in the system within 12 hours.

Thanks for your patience.

[nysbirds-l] 12/26- Couch's Cassin's Kingbirds (including Couch's AUDIO)

Here are a couple of photos, and more importantly a video, of the Couch's

You can go directly to the video, in which the Kingbird calls repeatedly,

The video will be embedded into this eBird list at some point soon,

We also found the Cassin's Kingbird in the Community Garden at Floyd
Bennett Field in Brooklyn in the early afternoon, and spent time with it
until ~1:40 PM.

All in all a very pleasant day of birding in the city, thanks to vagrant
kingbirds, glorious weather, and the MTA (NYC public transit system).

2014-12-26 Thread Deborah Allen
Some additional details re: today's Couch's Kingbird at Abingdon Square:

Photo showing the spread wing indicates that the bird is an adult male by the
very pointed outer primary (P10):

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17932675

It also appears that P6 is slightly notched unlike the P6 on a Tropical
Kingbird.

Photo showing the relatively shallow tail fork, characteristic of an adult
Couch's Kingbird:

It was wonderful to see this bird today. Thanks to everyone for the stream of
updates on its location.

[nysbirds-l] Couch's Kingbird Manhattan N.Y. City 12/26/'14

2014-12-26 Thread Thomas Fiore
Friday 26 Dec. 2014 - West Village area in Manhattan, N.Y. City

The COUCH'S KINGBIRD (heard giving diagnostic calls and very well
photographed by many) was last being seen where reported as posted by
Gabriel Willow, the building taking the full length of a short city
block between Jane Street & Horatio Street, along the western side of
Washington Street, in Manhattan's (New York City) West Village
neighborhood, this specific location a few short blocks south of the
western terminus of West 14 Street, from & to which there is access
for the West Side Highway that runs along Manhattan's far west edge
adjacent the Hudson River (connecting to Holland, Lincoln, Brooklyn
Battery Tunnels, and the G.W. Bridge uptown).

The Kingbird was sought by a small number of us at various locations
within a few short blocks very early this a.m., & thanks to Jacob
Drucker & Lila Fried the kingbird was seen for a good 15 min's. or
more just north of Bleecker Street & Hudson St. (which becomes Eighth
Ave. as it gets to W. 14 Street), but after a number of us fast-walked
to Jacob & Lila's "alternate" location around 8:15 a.m. or so, for
some great views for a short time,

the kingbird flew around the corner, west, & as we soon saw, right to
the (previously-noted building - first paragraph!), where more & more
observers were arriving for great views, the bird perching on
balconies, in trees immediately in front of the building, & quite
actively appearing to feed on minute or at least small insect life,
with temp. around 40+ F. in the bright sun.

Certainly
other birds of interest may be in the vicinity and it would be
interesting to note all of them as well as the amazing visitor from
the west. Thanks to all present who were so helpful in searching &
immediately putting word out amongst the wandering small group of
observers.

Hopefully the building & neighborhood residents will appreciate the
rarity & fascination of such a bird in their midst, and all who were
passing in the early a.m. hours today seemed quite interested. The
'night' shift doorman at the building had been informed that a
"few" (!) more folks could be on the way, & that NO one is at all
trying to peep in windows or otherwise disturb building or
neighborhood residents. (and thanks, Shane B.)

best of luck to all who try, and if possible do allow a couple of
hours for the attempt, as this bird can (we now know) wander a bit at
times (but as Gabriel's post indicated, it has been regular at the
Washington St. address for a month or maybe more now)...

Please post updates on yes/no sightings, and other details should
their be additional locations noted, esp. if no updates have been
offered in a few hours or on any given day, & thanks.

Friday 26 Dec. 2014 - West Village area in Manhattan, N.Y. City

The COUCH'S KINGBIRD (heard giving diagnostic calls and very well photographed
by many) was last being seen where reported as posted by Gabriel Willow, the
building taking the full length of a short city block between Jane Street &
Horatio Street, along the western side of Washington Street, in Manhattan's
(New York City) West Village neighborhood, this specific location a few short
blocks south of the western terminus of West 14 Street, from & to which there
is access for the West Side Highway that runs along Manhattan's far west edge
adjacent the Hudson River (connecting to Holland, Lincoln, Brooklyn Battery
Tunnels, and the G.W. Bridge uptown).

The Kingbird was sought by a small number of us at various locations within a
few short blocks very early this a.m., & thanks to Jacob Drucker & Lila Fried
the kingbird was seen for a good 15 min's. or more just north of Bleecker
Street & Hudson St. (which becomes Eighth Ave. as it gets to W. 14 Street), but
after a number of us fast-walked to Jacob & Lila's "alternate" location around
8:15 a.m. or so, for some great views for a short time,

the kingbird flew around the corner, west, & as we soon saw, right to the
(previously-noted building - first paragraph!), where more & more observers
were arriving for great views, the bird perching on balconies, in trees
immediately in front of the building, & quite actively appearing to feed on
minute or at least small insect life, with temp. around 40+ F. in the bright
sun.

Also present in the area were (at least) some American Robins, a
brightly-plumaged Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (at above bldg.), White-throated
Sparrows, Northern Cardinal, N. Mockingbird, and assorted other species -
perhaps a Sharp-shinned or Cooper's Hawk, briefly in the earliest hour, before
the kingbird was being seen by us. Certainly other birds of interest may be in
the vicinity and it would be interesting to note all of them as well as the
amazing visitor from the west. Thanks to all present who were so helpful in
searching & immediately putting word out amongst the wandering small group of
observers.

Hopefully the building & neighborhood residents will appreciate the rarity &
fascination of such a bird in their midst, and all who were passing in the
early a.m. hours today seemed quite interested. The 'night' shift doorman at

[nysbirds-l] 9 Snowy Owls!/Black-backed Woodpecker/Gray Jays & more

2014-12-26 Thread Joan Collins
12/26/14 Long Lake (Hamilton Co.)

A Mink ran across the road in front of my car on Sabattis Circle Road! Two
Gray Jays were at Sabattis Bog. This is the second day we've had a Pine
Siskin (just one!) at our feeders. It arrived in the high wind/rain storm.
We hit a high of over 50 Amer. Goldfinches at our feeders yesterday (less
today). This is a very unusual species to have at this time of year at our
location, although with the climate so greatly changed, I'm not sure what
"usual" is anymore.

[nysbirds-l] eBird.org Shared Locations around Couch's Kingbird

2014-12-26 Thread Ben Cacace
Several hotspots (shared locations) have been setup for the Couch's
Kingbird sightings. Since the bird is not restricted to a specific park
I've created the neighborhood location called:

'West Village, Manhattan': the area is roughly bounded by the Hudson River
on the west and Sixth Avenue on the east, extending from 14th Street south
to Houston Street.

Two new spots are along Hudson St.

- 'Abingdon Square Park' is south of West 12th St. and east of Hudson St.
- 'Bleeker Playground' is north of West 11th St. and east of Hudson St.

Other hotspots in the area are 'Jackson Square' just north of Horatio St.
on 8th Ave., 'Jefferson Market Garden' is a small park closed for the
season but viewable from the street. This is west of 6th Ave. at the
latitude of West 9th and West 10th St. and 'Hudson River
Greenway--Greenwich Village (W Houston-14th St.)' which covers the West
Village. To the east of the West Village are 'Washington Square Park' and
'Washington Square Village'. The 'High Line Park' set of locations are
north of the West Village.

[nysbirds-l] eBird.org: Merging Personal Location with Hotspot

2014-12-26 Thread Ben Cacace
One thing with personal locations is that they cannot be queried by any of
the eBird.org at levels below the individual county like this <
http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspot/L3238737 > for the 'West Village, Manhattan'
hotspot.

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) &
click "Edit"
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Make sure the checkmark is selected for "Delete after merging"

[nysbirds-l] Couch's Kingbird

2014-12-26 Thread John Gluth

[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, December
26 at 6:00 pm.

The highlights of today’s tape are COUCH’S and CASSIN’S KINGBIRDS (yes
folks this is New York in late December), BARNACLE and GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, TUNDRA SWAN, BARROW’S GOLDENEYE, KING EIDER,
HARLEQUIN DUCK, BLACK-HEADED GULL, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and Christmas
Count results.

A COUCH’S KINGBIRD, potentially New York State’s first if accepted by
NYSARC, was revealed as a possibility in southern Manhattan Thursday
evening and was relocated, heard calling and extensively photographed
this morning. The bird had been seen off and on for perhaps up to 8
weeks in lower Manhattan, and finally photos were obtained that piqued
the interest of local birders. This morning the bird spent much of
its time in a small park along Washington Street between Jane Street
to the south and Horatio Street on the north side. After mid-day when
the trees in the little park fell into shadow, the Kingbird was
relocated three blocks away in a small park with sunlit trees in the
middle of the intersection of Bleeker Street, Hudson Street, and 8th
Avenue. Hopefully these habits will continue.

Disappointingly the CASSIN’S KINGBIRD, seen last Friday, did not
appear for the Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count last Saturday, but it was
reported again Tuesday in the same location it had been frequenting
–the picnic area at the south end of the Community Garden at Floyd
Bennett Field. Today it was reported in the Community Garden itself.

Among the Christmas Counts held last Saturday, Montauk recorded 127
species, featuring 2 EURASIAN WIGEONS on Gardiners Island, 4 KING
EIDERS, with 2 drakes off Montauk Point, 2 HARLEQUIN DUCKS near
Culloden Point, 10 RED-NECKED GREBES, 8 BALD EAGLES, a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK, 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 12 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS, 2 ICELAND GULLS,
293 RAZORBILLS, 1 BARN, 1 NORTHERN SAW-WHET and 2 SNOWY OWLS, 3 HOUSE
WRENS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW on Gardiners
Island, 2 LINCOLN’S SPARROWS and 2 COMMON REDPOLLS.

The Brooklyn Count Saturday noted 123 species including 3 EURASIAN
WIGEONS, 7 RED-NECKED GREBES, 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 1 BARN, 5 SNOWY, 1
SHORT-EARED and 2 NO. SAW-WHET OWLS, 2 EASTERN PHOEBES, COMMON RAVEN,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, the CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continuing in
Prospect Park and single VESPER and NELSON’S SPARROWS.

Northern Nassau on Saturday recorded 109 species, highlights including
a drake BARROW’S GOLDENEYE off Sand’s Point Preserve, single CACKLING
and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, RED-NECKED GREBE, LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL, COMMON RAVEN, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and VESPER SPARROW.

Among the Peekskill Count’s 95 species Saturday were VIRGINIA RAIL, 35
BALD EAGLES, 2 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS and EASTERN PHOEBE.

Staten Island Saturday among their 94 species noted 5 RED-NECKED
GREBES, 2 BALD EAGLES and 3 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS.

The Sagaponack Count last Sunday recorded 126 species with 4 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 2 CACKLING GEESE, 2 TUNDRA SWANS, 3 RED-NECKED
GREBES, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 2 BALD EAGLES, single LAUGHING,
BLACK-HEADED, LESSER BLACK-BACKED and GLAUCOUS GULLS, 66 RAZORBILLS, 1
SHORT-EARED OWL, 2 LONG-EARED OWLS, COMMON RAVEN, 6 ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS, single NASHVILLE and WILSON’S WARBLERS, VESPER SPARROW and
BALTIMORE ORIOLE. The White-Fronted and 1 of the Cackling Geese and
the Tundra Swans were on Hook Pond in East Hampton, and the
Black-headed Gull was at Sagg Pond at the end of

[nysbirds-l] eBird Hotspot - Couch's Kingbird Location on Washington St.

2014-12-26 Thread Ben Cacace
I received a note from Shane Blodgett that the original location where the
Couch's Kingbird was found and has returned to on occasion is called
"Washington Commons Park". I was reluctant to enter a hotspot for a random
street that would never get visited again after the kingbird eventually
moves on.

'Washington Commons Park' between Jane and Horatio St. along Washington St.
has been created and will be available in the system within 12 hours.

Thanks for your patience.

— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.

[nysbirds-l] 12/26- Couch's & Cassin's Kingbirds (including Couch's AUDIO)

2014-12-26 Thread Doug Gochfeld
Here are a couple of photos, and more importantly a video, of the Couch's
Kingbird, taken early(ish) this morning, when the bird was on Hudson St.:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/29840397@N08/

You can go directly to the video, in which the Kingbird calls repeatedly,
here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/29840397@N08/15929914767/in/photostream/

The video will be embedded into this eBird list at some point soon,
courtesy of vimeo (since the Flickr/eBird embedding seems buggy):
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21034505

We also found the Cassin's Kingbird in the Community Garden at Floyd
Bennett Field in Brooklyn in the early afternoon, and spent time with it
until ~1:40 PM.

All in all a very pleasant day of birding in the city, thanks to vagrant
kingbirds, glorious weather, and the MTA (NYC public transit system).

Good Birding
-Doug Gochfeld. Brooklyn, NY.

Re: [nysbirds-l] 12/26- Couch's & Cassin's Kingbirds (including Couch's AUDIO)

2014-12-26 Thread Deborah Allen
Some additional details re: today's Couch's Kingbird at Abingdon Square:

Photo showing the spread wing indicates that the bird is an adult male by the
very pointed outer primary (P10):

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17932675

It also appears that P6 is slightly notched unlike the P6 on a Tropical
Kingbird.

Photo showing the relatively shallow tail fork, characteristic of an adult
Couch's Kingbird:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17932677

It was wonderful to see this bird today. Thanks to everyone for the stream of
updates on its location.
