Re:[nysbirds-l] Glaucous Gull Brooklyn
I've had a few inquiries so to Clarify there were two Glaucous Gulls at Coney Island Creek Park Today. Bobbi Manian and I Initially saw an all white gull flying over the far west end of seagate from the 37th street jetti that briefly landed on the water but was too far for a positive id. in an effort to get a closer look we went to coney island creek park and walked west on the beach where we found an immature glgu sitting on the water behind the sea gate homes there. this is when i reported bird. it was then joined by a second glgu in similar plumage that flew in from the south west (maybe this was the first bird we saw?). the two birds were together for ten or fifteen minutes before one flew off and out of sight over kaiser park. when we left the remaining gull was still on the water near seagate and was later refound in the area. this was more than i felt i could write from the field at the time and was satisfied that other birders were alerted to the birds presence and managed to get on it. [nysbirds-l] Floyd Snowies
Today at Floyd Bennett Field I observed several individuals getting very close to snowies (less than ten feet) including one who was clearly not a birder or nature photographer chasing a bird around the grasslands with a cell phone. I flagged down a passing US Gov Police Officer and Pointed out the activity. He informed me that you are allowed to get as close to the wildlife as you like and do as you please. I then asked if he could call a ranger. He refused and then asked me why i wanted to report someone who was doing the same thing i was. to which I replied we were observing the wildlife from a distance of 100 yards or more not harassing it. he shook his head at me and drove away. by this time the worst of the three harassers had left so i let it go. [nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Bird Club Evening Program
Please Join the Brooklyn Bird Club Monday, September 22, 7:00 P.M. for: How to Improve Your Bird Song Identification skills Presenter: Tom Stephenson *NOTE: This program will take place Mondayevening at the Brooklyn Public Library, Central Branch, 10 Grand Army Plaza (718-230-2191)* There's nothing more satisfying in birding than being able to recognize the birds singing and calling around you. The language for describing visual ID points for birds greatly helps us identify the species of an unknown bird. The lack of this language for songs makes it very difficult to know how to figure out an unknown song. In this talk we'll cover how to improve your song recognition and learning skills by using memory theory combined with the understanding of song and phrase structure. We'll also discuss an efficient language for describing vocalizations and give examples of how objective analysis of songs makes it much easier to separate similar-sounding species. Tom Stephenson has been birding since he was a kid. His articles have appeared in many publications, including *Birding, Birdwatcher's Digest, Handbook of the Birds of the World*, and *Guide to the Birds of SE Brazil*. He has lectured and guided many groups across the US as well as in Asia, where he has trained guides for the government of Bhutan. Please Join the Brooklyn Bird Club Thursday Jan 29th 7:00 PM at the Prospect Park Boathouse for: Bird Life in Brazil Presenter: Paulo Boute Come take a virtural tour of the Pantanal and Brazilian birds at this presentation with Brazilian guide Paulo Boute. Paulo is one of the pioneering birders and ornithologists in Brazil, with almost 30 years of experience guiding birders and photographers. Paulo was born on a ranch near Iguassu Falls and from a very early age he has literally been in touch with Brazilian birds: his older brother collected birds and very often he had the chance of holding them in his own hands! At the age of 17 Paulo moved to the state of Mato Grosso, where he started working as a tour guide in the Pantanal. He was one of the first and now is the most experienced guide working in this unique habitat, with more than a thousand trips to the Pantanal. His Brazilian life list is 1260 birds. Paulo has inspired others to follow in his tracks and is very proud in having dedicated his life to preserving the birds in Brazil and educating others on their beauty. When he is not guiding--either in the Pantanal, Amazon/Atlantic Forest or in the Brazilian Northeast--he is teaching birdwatching and presenting lectures both abroad and in-country. [nysbirds-l] Brooklyn Bird Club Evening Presentation
Please join the Brooklyn Bird Club Tuesday, March10th, 7:00 PM for: Iceland: Land of Fire, Ice and BIRDS! Presenter: Sandra Paci Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch http://www.bklynlibrary.org/locations/centralat Grand Army Plaza The lure of Iceland for birders lies not in the number of species to be seen, but in the quality of those species and the opportunity to encounter them in spectacularly beautiful and unspoiled landscapes, sometimes in overwhelming numbers. Seabirds, shorebirds, waterfowl, and gulls are all well represented. Some are special Icelandic races and subspecies found nowhere else. Many birds in this sparsely populated land show a remarkable lack of fear of humans, allowing for close viewing and photography. Join Sandra Paci as she discusses her 2013 journey to this intriguing island nation. Sandra Paci was born in Baltimore, Maryland and lives in New York City, where she works for a gallery in the Chelsea art district and is an active member of the Brooklyn Bird Club and the Linnaean Society of New York. Since first catching the travel bug in the early 1980s, she has ventured to over twenty countries outside the U.S., mostly in Europe and Latin America. Sandra became an avid birder in 2003 and has enjoyed long-distance birding trips to Alaska, Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Iceland and Morocco. http://www.brooklynbirdclub.org/meetings.htm Dennis Hrehowsik Brooklyn -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] BBC Evening Presentation Tonight
Please join the Brooklyn Bird Club Tonight 7:00 at the Brooklyn Central LIbrary for: * Winter Pelagics in the MidAtlantic - Putting the Bir in Birding * *Presenter: Paul Guris* The idea of venturing out on the ocean in winter is a daunting prospect for many birders, but this can be one of the most rewarding times to look for seabirds and other marine life in the Mid-Atlantic. Dovekies, Puffins, Murres, Razorbills, Gannets, Kittiwakes, loons, ducks, cormorants, and gulls can all be found, many quite regularly. Some of these species are much more common in our area than people realize, and we're discovering some things that help us find these birds more reliably. This program is an introduction to what you could expect on one of these trips, the birds we search for, and interesting information about them. Paul Guris has been birding the Delaware Valley area for over 40 years. His first boat trip was in his mother's third trimester, so his love of seabirds comes naturally. He is a current member of the New Jersey Bird Records Committee, a past member of the Pennsylvania Ornithological Records Committee, a past president of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, the former captain of the now retired Nikon / DVOC World Series of Birding team, and the owner / operator of See Life Paulagics http://paulagics.com, a pelagic tour company specializing in trips in the Mid-Atlantic region. *Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch http://www.bklynlibrary.org/locations/central at Grand Army Plaza* http://brooklynbirdclub.org/meetings.htm -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Presenter: Seth Wollney Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch at Grand Army Plaza Various human impacts, such as pollution and buildings, can shape freshwater pond ecosystems in the urban landscape of New York City. Ponds are important centers of biodiversity in cities and benefit humans in many ways. At our June meeting, Seth Wollney will talk about his project to inventory the biological communities in seven local ponds using cutting-edge environmental DNA collection techniques. The data collected will lead to a deeper understanding of what humans can do to help conserve these important ecosystems for future generations. As a native New Yorker, Seth Wollney has been a life-long naturalist exploring the ponds, woods, fields and beaches of the city. While passionate about almost everything that concerns ecology and natural history, he has a particular interest in birds, turtles, dragonflies and moths. He is currently working on his doctoral degree at the Conservation Genetics lab at the College of Staten Island, CUNY. His thesis project investigates how biological communities found in urban ponds are impacted by human activities with a particular focus on painted turtle ecology and population biology. We’ll also cover focusing problems, benefits and downsides to using flash, and how to compensate for birds moving from dark to light backgrounds. Processing your photos after you get home is another critical part of bird photography. Post-processing can make the difference between an OK photo and a stunning shot. We’ll discuss the basics of post-processing, what programs to use, and the best techniques for adjusting exposure, color balance, and sharpness. The workshop format will give us plenty of time to go over all of these key concepts in detail and allow for lots of questions. Tom Stephenson has been birding since he was a kid under the tutelage of Dr. Arthur Allen of Cornell University. *Tuesday, September 20th, 7:00 P.M.* *Great Gull Island* *Presenters: Helen Hays and Joe DiCostanzo* *Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch <http://www.bklynlibrary.org/locations/central> at Grand Army Plaza* Helen Hays and Joe DiCostanzo, researchers at the Museum of Natural History, will present highlights from more than 40 years of research, monitoring and habitat support of the nesting Roseate and Common terns on Great Gull Island in Eastern Long Island Sound. Currently a record 9,500 Common tern pairs and 1300 Roseate tern pairs nest there. Discovery of abnormal nestlings sounded the early warnings on toxic levels of PCBs in the Sound in the 1970’s. A large number of volunteers assist during the breeding season, and the project has partners in South America where they discovered the first concentration of Roseate terns in the non-breeding season. http://www.brooklynbirdclub.org/meetings.htm Dennis Hrehowsik Brooklyn -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re: [nysbirds-l] Any sightings of the Swainson's Warbler Saturday?
As Josh reported several members of the Brooklyn Bird Club sat walk and I heard the bird singing briefly in the same area it was seen in the mid wood but never got eyes on it. It was not singing as frequently as it was yesterday and covered a fair amount of ground between songs. It was a brief steak out maybe 30 min or so as most of us had a chance to see bird earlier in the week.
