Re: [nysbirds-l] East Pond Update July 23rd

2015-07-23 Thread Pat Aitken
That's fabulous news. Andrew, thank you for your dedicated and tireless
efforts, because without you riding heard on the NPS, and keeping us
informed, I doubt anything would have happened.

Just a suggestion, maybe we should all call NPS and thank them. It may
help get work accomplished more quickly in future, or maintain momentum
now. The park service needs to know how valuable a resource Jamaica Bay
is, and that there is a large group of us out here who want it maintained.

 Dear all,

As I indicated a few days ago, there is currently work being done on the
north end of the East Pond. Although, I had a fairly good idea of what was
being attempted. Yesterday evening, I had a conversation with NPS
management in an effort to clarify what exactly was being done.

Here is the scoop--NPS, has uncovered an area of the pipe that drains the
pond. This section was found to have some collapsing occurring and so the
SHORT TERM solution is to sleeve it with PVC piping. A long term solution
will be to replace the entire pipe and put in place a more robust and
updated system. This will require much more money than the short term
solution so it will not happen overnight. However, it is on the radar to
 get done.

As a result of the action taken to uncover the problematic section of the
pipe and clearing the collapsed area and any blockage, water is now flowing
at a considerable clip out of the pond. This, I verified early this morning
as I visited the site and could see that the output will make a difference
 in the water level.

This increased flow coupled with a dry spell means that we have a very
good chance of salvaging the shorebird season on the pond. I'll keep
posting updates as I check in and note the water level and movement of
 shorebirds.

Again, thank you to all those who took the time to call in and or write to
NPS, who themselves deserve credit for taking the necessary actions.

Start brushing up on your shorebirds peeps, it's going to get real in a
 matter of weeks!

 Cheers,

 林 Quiet as the forest

Re: [nysbirds-l] Subject: Solitaire yes - 1/9 Tiffany Creek (Nassau Co)

2018-01-09 Thread Pat Aitken
DO NOT park on Sandy Hill Road, if you get caught, you will be ticketed.

The Nature Conservancy has a preserve on Sandy Hill Road, close to the
intersection with Berry Hill Road. Look for a sign on the left as you come
in off of Berry Hill. Follow the long driveway down to the parking lot, and
then walk back out to Sandy Hill Road.

Head north on Sandy Hill Road (away from Berry Hill). The first driveway
you come to as you walk along Sandy Hill on the eastern side of Sandy Hill,
is marked as private property,The field on the northern side of the
driveway is where the solitaire has been seen, and is part of the Tiffany
Creek preserve, so you are allowed to be in that field. I don't think you
could see the bird from the road, unless it is foraging in the front of the
field, but that does not seem to be where its been seen.

Good luck to anyone who goes!

[nysbirds-l] Jones beach west end closed

2020-03-18 Thread Pat Aitken
For anyone contemplating a trip to Jones Beach:. The parking lot of the
nature center is being used as a covid drive through test area. You will
not be permitted to go past the booth where you pay your fee. This means
that access to the west end and coast guard station area is shut down.

Good spot to avoid, as this could be a covid-19 transmission hotspot.

Can't say for certain how long this will go on, but I heard it may be
through the summer.

Stay healthy!

The sand that was dug out from the site by the coast guard station was used
in construction of the new education center. I learned that it always was
the intention to remove that sand, but I agree, the parks did a very poor
job at communicating to the public.

There are no plans to run the offshore cable or any support structures
through Jones Beach. Parks is well aware there would be massive opposition.

They are not using the building for a drive through, they have set up tents
in the lot. I am sure if you Google search it, you will see what has been
set up.

[nysbirds-l] Cold spring harbor roseate spoonbill county location

2021-07-25 Thread Pat Aitken
To many birders’ great delight, another Roseate Spoonbill appeared in Cold
Spring Harbor on Long Island today. This presents a wonderful opportunity
for birders with the time and patience to get the bird in both Nassau and
Suffolk Counties, as the bird was moving back and forth along the
shorelines. I’ve attached a screen shot of the county boundaries. The
brown lines are the land based boundary, the purple is the extension out
into the water.

If you want to check the map yourself, it can be found at
lodging.dos.my.gov/#/map

If you go tomorrow, please be careful with parking. Route 25a is a very
busy road.

It is being seen on the southern end of St. John’s pond. Distant view.
Park in fish hatchery lot , climb stairs next to church

The bird has been moving around a bit between the pond and harbor, so worth
checking both locations of it has moved by the time you get here

[nysbirds-l] Whimbrel on Dune road, Hampton Bays

There was a report on Facebook of a sighting yesterday that a Whimbrel was
found in the salt marsh, North of dune rd and west of the ponquogue Bridge
Saturday afternoon at about 4PM (2/12/22). There was cell phone footage
for Identification purposes since it’s usually not seen in NY this time of
year, which looked like it was indeed a Whimbrel

[nysbirds-l] Arie Gilbert

2023-03-17 Thread Pat Aitken
I am posting this message with a heavy heart. Arie Gilbert lost his battle
with lung cancer this morning. Arie loved birds and the birding community
and was a great mentor and friend to many. His love of language and talent
for truly atrocious puns was one of his hallmarks, as was his love of a
good twitch and a craft beer afterwards to celebrate. Arie's record of
seeing 466 birds in New York State is remarkable. Arie leaves a powerful
legacy in the many birders he encouraged, befriended and mentored. He will
be missed.

Our deepest sympathies go to Jenn O'Brien, his fiancee, and to his family.

Funeral services will be held at Gutterman's Funeral Home in Woodbury on
Sunday, March 19, 1 - 2 pm.

Shiva will be 3 - 6, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at Arie's home, 61 Anndom
Court, North Babylon, NY 11703

Funeral is on Tuesday, 2:00 pm, Old Montefiore Cemetery, 121-83
Springifield Blvd, Queens, NY

Many of us will remember Arie's motto - Semper Aucupio (always birding).

To: Robert Paxton

The sand that was dug out from the site by the coast guard station was used
in construction of the new education center. I learned that it always was
the intention to remove that sand, but I agree, the parks did a very poor
job at communicating to the public.

There are no plans to run the offshore cable or any support structures
through Jones Beach. Parks is well aware there would be massive opposition.

They are not using the building for a drive through, they have set up tents

[nysbirds-l] Re: [nysbirds-l] Varied Thrush @ Sands Point Preserve LI…

It is supposed to be located east of the pond. The preserve is closed to
the general public today. The preserve charges an entrance fee of $10.
Not sure if that is still in place. As Andrew says, do your research!
