[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Slight conference shuttle changes
Hi everyone, I wanted to make you aware of a couple of small changes to the airport shuttle schedule for next week's conference: The final departure from the airport on Tuesday the 12th will now be around 5.30p rather than 5.00p. Hopefully that should help in case any of you have late flights. There will no longer be a 12.00p pickup from the airport on Wednesday the 13th, since no one signed up for it. The first pickup on Wednesday will be around 2.30p. Please let me know if you have questions. Just as a reminder, here's the shuttle signup: http://goo.gl/bOCcCJ And here's the conference rideshare page: https://erideshare.com/xprs.php?e=seIXzCOI See you next week! Cheers! Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Items not checking in?
There are a few popups that we've deemed unnecessary. For instance, there's a pop up that appears at checkin for a "bad status", requiring staff to affirm that they do indeed want to check in the item. Two of those statuses are "Lost" and "Missing". Our staff honestly couldn't come up with any reason why we wouldn't want to check in items with those two statuses, at least not given our workflow and processes. Another (admittedly self-inflicted) example are the "check parts" notices some of our consortium members use. Oh, how happy would we be to convince our fellow libraries not to use those ... Anyway, this is all to say that those messages do indeed slow down work flow, and they can be painfully slow to pop up on older computers. Fortunately, all of our equipment is pretty new, but I know our smaller libraries can have issues with the speed as they have the double hit of slow hardware and slow connections. Cheers! [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Items not checking in?
Hi folks, We have libraries in our consortium that are claiming that Evergreen is not properly checking in items, i.e. that they're scanning the items for check in but the system isn't taking the item off the patron's account. We're running 2.5.1. Personally, I'm pretty sure we've got PEBKAC going on. At our local library, we've implemented work flow improvements and the problem has pretty much disappeared. Still, I thought I'd ask: have any of you experienced this issue? Cheers! Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Items not checking in?
I think they're enabled by default. If you plug speakers in to the computer or turn up the sound, you should hear them. I will say, however, that the default confirmation sound for a successful checkin is pretty soft, so our systems staff replaced it with something more audible. Hopefully Brent will see this message and respond with more details on how to do that! Cheers! After we (Grand Rapids Public Library) moved to floating collections, staff had to spend time managing and balancing floating collections. Smart Float was created to automate those tasks as follows. Smart Float automates the redistribution of floating collections based on available shelf space and duplicate copies. Smart Float also allows automatic "re-homing" of items based on a number of circulations from the original library or a specified time frame. Upon checkin Smart Float will first check if an item needs to be sent home, if not the item will float to the checkin branch if space is available and there are not too many duplicate copies. If space and or duplicates don't allow floating to the checkin branch, it will next float to the branch with most space and no excess duplicates, then to the branch with most space regardless of duplicates. If no branches have shelf space it will stay where it is (float to the checkin library). Copy locations are the units of Smart Float operation. Copy locations are mapped to the following attributes that Smart Float uses to determine how to distribute copies. - active: if true, Smart Float will be used, otherwise traditional floating will occur. - items_allowed: the number of items the shelving location can hold. - dups_threshold: the number of duplicate titles allowed for that copy location. - homing_threshold: number of circulations from the original owning library. - homing_lifespan: time interval, such as "3 months". Items will be sent home within the homing_lifespan from creation date, until the homing_threshold is met. So if shelving location 'kids movies' has a homing_threshold of 1 and a homing_lifespan of "3 months", items in that shelving location won't start floating until they have circulated once from the owning library, or its been 3 months or more since they were created. The Grand Rapids Public Library is now running an initial version of Smart Float in production on Evergreen 2.2. I've committed a lightly tested version for Master in my working repository. The implementation is almost entirely plpgsql code and no Evergreen client side interface currently exists, but I wanted to put it out to the community at this point in the hopes of finding collaborators and getting it included in future releases.
[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Notification is library is last owning on a held item?
Hi folks, Does anyone know, is there a feature in Evergreen, whether currently in place or in development, that would notify a library is it's the last owning library that carries a particular held item? We have a large consortium, 70+ libraries, and patrons can place holds on pretty much any member library's items. It would be really helpful if there could be some sort of alert if a library's that's the last holding one marks a held item missing. That way, the patron's home library could notify him/her that they're unable to get the item through the consortium. I hope that my question makes sense! Cheers! Libki is a nice option. It's open source and you can roll your own installation (http://libki.org/) or get it from a vendor (http://bywatersolutions.com/what-is-libki/). [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] ***SPAM*** Re: Auto-Renewal Functionality
As a director, I wouldn't so much worry about the fine revenue; I think treating fines as revenue leads to some poor customer service practices. What I would worry about more would be achieving what I see as the main point of fines (and due dates!): getting back your materials. An auto-renew policy paired with a liberal number of renewals, say unlimited, may mean some of your materials would never come back, and staff wouldn't have much of an idea they were gone. I realize that holds in some sense would help prevent that. However, there are some collections (large print, foreign language, DVDs, etc) the traffic of which is driven more by browsing than holds necessarily. The loss rate for those materials may increase. I'm not saying to not develop the feature; I'm just saying that you'd need to work through your policies to ensure that you have good customer service and ensure that your materials are returned. With the right set of policies, it could be a nice feature. And hear hear to ensuring that it be controllable at the individual library, or even shelving location, level. We could never get the 70 libraries in our consortium to agree to such a radical change. Cheers! And when I ask myself can I see a significant utility in staff having this ability, frankly the answer is no. So, would I be upset if the override was available? Thanks, Holly. I definitely understand that; our local branches' receipts are set up that way. The issue that we have is that the receipts for the selfcheck do not pull a local library's receipt templates. Instead, the selfcheck uses receipt templates common to the entire consortium. Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] How to make the EG client default basic search instead of advanced catalog search?
Hi Ben, I can speak to this a bit, as we've considered this at our library too. Frontline staff often use staff workstations to show patrons how to search the catalog. Defaulting the catalog search to the basic page would better mirror what patrons see when they access the catalog, in addition to giving staff the ability to perform the various functions they need which would be more difficult to do on the public catalog. Almost all of this can be achieved via CSS, possibly with some changes to the underlying HTML (e.g. tables to divs or whatever so that Place Hold appears under the bib info instead of way over to the right). I don't see anything that suggests a need for two distinct versions of HTML in your wish list. Geolocation functionality could be supported for desktop browsers too, but be careful in how you implement it. If you go to branch1.example.com in your browser and get redirected to automatically searching branch2 instead of branch1, that's probably going to break user expectations.
Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Installing and Running Linux Staff Client Version 2.0.9
Our System Manager (for the Sage Library System) built a Linux client on the server using these instructions, I believe: http://evergreen-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=evergreen-user:installing_and_running_the_staff_client#installing_on_linux I've been running this on a couple of Linux machines for a while, and am about to roll out staff computers running Linux with the native Evergreen client. While I never had issues running the Windows client in Wine, the native client runs /much/ faster. I have not experienced any issues with the native client that seem unique to it. I've been running it on Linux Mint 12 and the latest version of Linux Mint Debian Edition. Cheers! I have not extensively tested this, but I have a laptop that I have done this on for 2.1, and I've not seen any issues with it in occasional usage over the last few months. Best of luck. Hi everyone, We've been using the following URL for our selfcheck stations: https://[catalog.url]/opac/extras/selfcheck/selfcheck.xml With the advent of TPAC, we were wondering if there's a new URL for the selfcheck, either in 2.2 or 2.3? [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Movable tabs in staff client?
Hello, I was wondering if it's in the works (or already exists) to allow tabs in the staff client be movable drag-and-drop style, similar to what you can do in Firefox or Chrome. I looked around on Launchpad and elsewhere to see if this is being considered but didn't find anything. Or, is there a way to do this already? Obviously, this would not be a terribly high-priority development. But it seems like it would be a nice feature to add. Cheers! Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Recommendations for PC reservation print management software needed
I'm starting to test a new one, Libki, for hopeful future deployment. Our public computers run Linux, so most time management softwares don't work on them. Libki can run on Windows or Linux clients, although it does require a Linux server. The server doesn't require a lot of system resources, though, so it would be easy to slap a Linux distro of choice onto an old machine to act as a server. The staff-side management module just runs in the browser, so no additional software is required on staff machines.Cheers!Buzzy Nielsen**Library DirectorHood River County Library District502 State StreetHood River OR 97031541-386-2535www.hoodriverlibrary.org Original Message Subject: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Recommendations for PC reservation print management software needed From: Elizabeth Longwell blong...@eou.edu Date: Fri, June 01, 2012 12:40 pm To: Evergreen Discussion Group open-ils-general@list.georgialibraries.org Evergreen libraries,One of our district libraries is looking at PC reservation/time management/print management software solutions. [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Building Linux staff client for 2.1.0
Hi, I'd like to build a Linux client on a client workstation. Our system currently runs 2.1.0. Are there instructions for building a staff client on client machine for 2.1.0? Or does someone have an already-packaged version of it? I saw these instructions: http://open-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=evergreen-user:installing_and_running_the_staff_client#installing_on_linux But I couldn't seem to get them to work. I've tried using a packaged version of 2.1.0a, but it didn't work with our server. Thanks for your help! Cheers! Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Building Linux staff client for 2.1.0
BTW, if it helps, the client would be on a machine running Linux Mint 12, or some other Debian-based distro. Cheers! Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Android Client App.
I'm actually also interested in running the Linux client. I got 2.2a3 to run, but are there older versions of the Linux client available? Maybe archived somewhere? Our server is running 2.1, and I'd love to be able to run the Linux client on some of our staff computers without needing to use Wine. Cheers! [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Receipt printers for Linux
Hello, Does anyone have a recommendation for a good receipt printer for Evergreen that's also Linux-compatible? We need new printers, and our staff workstations will eventually be migrated to a Debian-based Linux distro like Ubuntu or Mint. Thus, I want to make sure I'm buying a printer that plays well with Linux. Based on looking through the list archives, and my own research, I'm leaning toward the Star TSP100, but I'd love to hear other suggestions as well as thoughts on the cost of replacement rolls. Thanks! Cheers! Buzzy Nielsen * Library Director Hood River County Library District 502 State St Hood River OR 97031 541-387-7062 http://hoodriverlibrary.org
