[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Penalties question
Hello, this is a question for anyone who is working with Unique Management Systems. I'd like to know what your system clean-up procedure is when a patron is sent to Collections, and subsequently the bill is paid. When a patron is marked for Collections, a penalty (on our system it is #30) is created automatically in actor.usr_standing_penalty. Also, an entry is made in actor.usr_note saying that the patron has been sent to Collections. When the bill is paid, another entry is made in actor.usr_note saying that the patron is no longer in Collections. However, the standing penalty remains open in actor.usr_standing_penalty. Is it your practice to delete the penalty from actor.usr_standing_penalty, or to close it (that is, to put a value into the stop_date field)? Also, do you leave the two usr_notes in the patron's record, or delete them? Thanks. -- Glen. * Glen Modell Library Automation Specialist Ann Arbor District Library mode...@aadl.org 734-327-8322
[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Marc field change script
Hello, I would like to know if anyone has a script which changes or eliminates a given MARC subfield for a given list of bibliographic records. In particular, we have about 10,000 records with contents in the 100-e subfield which we would like to eliminate. In those cases, the 100-a ends in a comma, which we would like to eliminate (or change to a period) as well. [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] PostGreSQL upgrade to 9.4
Hello, this is Glen from Ann Arbor. We are not yet on Evergreen, but we have a test server which is now on 2.12.4, OpenSRF 2.5.2, and PostGreSQL 9.3. We just attempted to move it to PostGreSQL 9.4 in preparation for an upgrade to Evergreen 3.0. We tried the pg_upgradecluster method, and it did not work for us. We had a lot of errors pointing out various parts of the database that it could not find, and, while the operation did complete, not all the data was migrated. I am wondering if anyone has any advice for getting through this PostGreSQL upgrade. Thanks. -- Glen. * Glen Modell Library Automation Specialist Ann Arbor District Library 734-327-8322 mode...@aadl.org
[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Lost Processing fee question
Hello all. This is Glen at the Ann Arbor District Library. We are not yet on Evergreen, but I am testing a migration, and I've run into a question which perhaps someone can answer. I have been bringing in test checkout data, and some of the checkouts are getting marked LOST. When I look at a LOST item in a patron's record, I find that the system is adding a $1.00 processing fee. I have been able to use the SETTINGS file to stop the processing fee from being counted when a LOST item is checked in, but I can't find the fee itself. It is not anywhere in the SETTINGS file as far as I can see. It is not in config.billing_type, although that seems like the obvious place. Does anyone know another place where a LOST processing fee could be hiding? Thanks. -- Glen. * Glen Modell Library Automation Specialist Ann Arbor District Library 734-327-8322 mode...@aadl.org
[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Ordering bibliographic & item records from vendors
Hello, this is Glen at the Ann Arbor District Library in Michigan. We are not on Evergreen but are exploring it. I would appreciate advice from anyone who is purchasing new bibliographic / item record combinations from vendors such as Baker & Taylor. Two questions please: First, are you going through Vandelay, or using another method? Second, how are you handling the call number records? Is the vendor contributing those as well? Thanks. -- Glen. ***** Glen Modell Library Automation Specialist Ann Arbor District Library 734-327-8322 mode...@aadl.org

Message-ID: <canakoqzb4u8evgvc27ogk_jysfrpbbdsys6vxoo4tpwduk5...@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Scott, Thanks for the question. One thing I want to bring up for clarity's sake is that IRC is used for two separate things in our community, just like in other open source project communities. First of all it is used as an always-on communication channel, but as well as a platform to hold meetings. Since a good number of community members are already connecting and communicating on IRC, this makes it an easy choice to also have our meetings there. That way the community can read along when a meeting happens in real time, and no new software needs to be installed/used for access. For me one of the biggest advantages of IRC is the fact that it is alway on, automatically logged, and free. Unlike other solutions designed specifically for meetings which in almost all cases have some or all of the following limitations: not free, has participant limits, must have at least one active meeting admin, and creates very large files for meeting recordings. I have been part Evergreen related meetings that were held in some of the platforms that you mentioned. Though we made sure we took minutes to maintain openness, but to be honest once there are more than 5 participants it became hard to not interrupt each other. Also, we had to have at least a single person to fire up the meeting. Hope this helps, Yamil P.S. I will send out another email to pick from a couple of dates for the next practice time. [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Did you migrate from III?
Hello, this is Glen at the Ann Arbor District Library. We are not an Evergreen site but are exploring it. I'd like to hear from anyone who migrated to Evergreen from Innovative Interfaces. I'm experimenting with bib record migration and I'm curious as to whether anyone was able to use the xmlOpac from III to get pre-packaged marcXML or whether you have have other suggestions. [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] ***SPAM*** Permission groups
Hi, this is Glen at the Ann Arbor District Library. We're not on Evergreen, but I'm experimenting. I'd like some advice about adding permissions groups. In the client I've gone through Admin, Server, Permissions Groups, and added several groups under Staff. These show up in the permission.grp_tree table, but there is a column called application_perm which does not get filled automatically. Perhaps because of this, the new permissions groups aren't valid. When I create a new user and assign the user to that permissions group, that value is not retained after I save it. I've tried running an autogen but that didn't help. Is there an additional step I need to do in order to add a permission group? Thanks. -- Glen.

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] ***SPAM*** Questions about patron records
Hello. My name is Glen Modell and I work at the Ann Arbor District Library in Michigan. We have been using Innovative since 2005 but are investigating the Evergreen system. I am looking into how I would migrate patron records, and I have several questions for anyone who could take a moment to answer them. First, how are you using the following fields: Active, Master_account, Super_user, Barred, Usr_group, Last_xact_id? Second, I see that I can segment off patrons as local/nonlocal and adult/juvenile by using the Juvenile and Within_CIty_Limits fields. But we also have business cards and so on. What field/fields are you using in the Evergreen patron record to distinguish between different types of patron cards? Third, when I register a new patron in the client, I see a bar labeled Statistical Categories at the bottom of the screen. This is not a link and I wondering how this is used. I'd appreciate any responses. Thanks. -- Glen. * Glen Modell Library Automation Specialist Ann Arbor District Library 734-327-8322 mode...@aadl.org
