Re: [Opensim-dev] New Region Console Creation Issue

2010-02-15 Thread Mark Malewski
I supposed all you can do is file a bug report, and make the core dev's
aware of it, and hope that it possibly gets fixed in a future release.

Whether you want to view OpenSim as an application or a Platform or
middleware or whatever word you want to describe it, the point is that I
believe Len was just pointing out something that was broken.

Regardless of what you want to call OpenSim, (i.e. Application, middleware,
platform, etc.) the point of his post was that a feature used to work, and
now it's broken.

I believe his post was meant to be more of a bug report type of thing
(just to make the dev's aware of the issue). I do believe pointing out bugs
is extremely helpful to the project, and that trying to make the project as
stable as possible should be one of the primary goals of developing (or
designing) anything.

I believe Len understands that it's Alpha-ware, but I believe he was just
trying to be helpful by pointing out an issue that seems to be broken (in
the release that he's currently using).

* Fully working is not likely to happen anytime soon.*

I believe we all agree on that.

I wasn't referring to OpenSim fully working as a whole, I was referring to
a feature that was working previously (and now is broken). We understand
things get broken from time to time but it's good that individuals at
least point the things that are broken out, so at least the dev's are aware
of them.

(Although filing a bug report is probably your *best* bet at getting the
issue addressed or fixed, or at least making one of the core dev's aware of
the issue or increasing the likelihood that it might get fixed in a future
release).

http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Bugs

Len, just file a detailed Mantis report concerning the issue, and let them
know what version you are currently using, and just post a mantis bug report
about the issue. That's the best way to point out something that is broken
(and something that needs fixing). This way one of the dev's can at least
look the issue over, and at least they are aware of it.

http://opensimulator.org/mantis/my_view_page.php

It never hurts to file a bug report, and just point out any broken issues
that you may find. It certainly increases the chances of the bug getting
addressed and fixed.

OpenSim has come a very long way, and things often do get broken during
refactoring projects. It happens.

Rome wasn't built in a day. The bugs will eventually get squashed. ;-)

Thanks Mark. Your response is well appreciated. I'm trying a few
additional scenarios prior to filing an official bug report. For example,
seeing if the issue repeats itself when using SQL Lite as opposed to MySQL,
attempting teleportation into the new (invisible) region to see what errors
are thrown into the log, etc. Some of these things may lead to a better
understanding of how to track down the cause.

Yeah, I'll keep watch and see. It's not a huge issue since a simple server
reboot corrects the matter, but I can see where it will be a major headache
in a more production-centric environment where new regions need to be
created on the fly in standalone mode.
