AW: JDBC
Hi Antje Eventhough I never migrated Sybase (or SQL Server) code (JDBC/Java) to Oracle, maybe that helps anyway: In Transact SQL, you can actually return data from an anonymous block, that's correct. An equivalent to do this in PL/SQL might be the use of OUT parameters within stored procedures. That means that you just have to write wrappers for your T-SQL blocks (put them into PL/SQL stored procs). Done that, you can communicate from Java with the procedure through the OUT parameter, once you registered the proc with it's OUT parameters within the Java context. After binding the parameter to Java variables, the data will be transferred to those variables (when the proc is executed) for your further use within the Java context. Nothing new, actually. A problem might be the syntactical difference between T-SQL and PL/SQL, eventhough Oracle is able to handle more of the syntax you encounter in T-SQL like CASE or ANSI SQL joins. Hope that helps a little bit. If not, pipe it to /dev/null ;) Stefan Jahnke Consultant BOV Aktiengesellschaft Voice: +49 201 - 4513-298 Fax: +49 201 - 4513-149 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] visit our website: http://www.bov.de subscribe to our newsletter: http://www.bov.de/presse/newsletter.asp Behalten Sie den Ueberblick - mit dem neuen BasicOverView, unserer Seminaruebersicht fuer das 2. Oracle 9.2 and Solaris 9
Dear DBAs, anybody out there have experience/knowledge about the compatibility between Oracle 9.2 and Solaris 9 ? On the Metalink site the server certification matrix say projected and I'm confident that this will turn into Certified quite soon, but the direct experience it's a different matter as usual. I know that the two products are both really new, but I'm now in a lucky condition, with 2 brand new machines to install from scratch (fire280) and some time for the migration from 8.1.7, no critical apps dependent on the Oracle version, so I'm thinking to configure the two machines with the latest versions available, both OS and Oracle. On the other hand we need Oracle 9i for the Spatial option that seems to be really improved on 9i. Dynamically preventing use of index
Title: Dynamically preventing use of index Hi, I have a table with two column, each having non-unique index. The following select is used to fetch records. The variables var1 and var2 are provided for execution. Only one of the two variables is provided. The requirement is to use the index on that column only for which the value is provided and avoid use of the other column index. Is this possible in a select stmt in RBO? Oracle uses both the indexes by default, irrespective of the values provided. Select col1, col2 from am49 where col1 = var1 or col2 = var2; The above query should use the index on col1 only when var1 is provided and vice versa. RE: DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT issue
If you have a proper OFA setup then the problem is not to big. The syntax is db_file_name_convert=('/vobs/oracle/dbs','/fs2/oracle/stdby') log_file_name_convert=('/vobs/oracle/dbs','/fs2/oracle/stdby') where you are changing files that are in /vobs/oracle/dbs on prod to /fs2/oracle/stdby/ on for the standby. Re: Exporting stats for a production server to a dev/test server
Cherie, Great name. Our initial stats were generated with the ANALYZE command. We did export all the stats with the dbms_stats - one parameter of the GATHER_TABLE_STATS procedure is CASCADE, which picks up the index and column stats too. Please test first on your own system to make sure this is true for your version and setup. We did not delete the stats before doing the new, what we did was this: 1) export the old stats 2) analyze using a new sample, cascade, with histos 3) export the new stats (with a new label) 4) test, reimport the old and new stats as necessary Do this quick test to show yourself what it can do: a) create table tester.statstest as select * from dba_tables; b) create index tester.statstestidx on statstest(table_name); c) analyze table tester.statstest estimate statistics sample 1 percent for table for all indexes for all columns size 254; d) create the stats holding table in the tester schema using DBMS_STATS.CREATE_STAT_TABLE('tester','stats','tsuser01') e) export the stats using DBMS_STATS.EXPORT_TABLE_STATS('tester','statstest',null,'stats','1pcttest',true,null); f) select * from tester.stats to see what is stored g) analyze table tester.statstest delete statistics; h) import the stats using DBMS_STATS.IMPORT_TABLE_STATS('tester','statstest',null,'stats','1pcttest',true,null); i) select * from dba_tables, dba_indexes, dba_tab_histograms to see what was imported You can store multiple versions of stats for the same table with different lables ('1pctest' in the example) but if you try to store stats with the same label it will overwrite. We did have some data dictionary locking issues trying to import multiple partitions of the same table at the same time, but our db has suspect dd issues anyway, so this might just be a feature of our system. hth, Jack --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Jack, Were your old statistics generated with the ANALYZE command? Re:Adding Control files
Yechiel, Whether you have 1, 2, or a dozen controlfiles is a DBA's call, not someone who thinks he knows his stuff. I run my database with 2 control files, on different spindles of course and have no problems of contention there. Now you may be seeing contention with datafiles, redo log files, etc that is masquerading as controlfile contention. This can be particularly so if your redo logs are Oracle's default of 10K. Since every time a redo switch occurs also requires a checkpoint. Therefore try increasing the size of your redo log files. My smallest is 100MB and the largest is .5GB. RE: JDBC
Stefan, Agreed. I am merely pointing out one can call anonymous block. Packages is the way to do it. Richard -Original Message- Sent: Monday, July 08, 2002 12:53 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Hi Richard You can do that. But I think it is recommandable to wrap up the PL/SQL and put it into packages. This way, your code is much better organized than having anonymous blocks throughout your Java code. Setting db_block_size with installer
I am trying to install Oracle 9.2 on Solaris using dbca (Database Configuration Assistant) and didn't see a handy box to set the db_block_size. I just edited the initialization parameter, but when dbca started installing the database, it returned the errors: ORA-01503 Create controlfile failed ORA-00058 DB_BLOCK_SIZE must be 4096 to mount this database, not 8182 This made me think that since dbca copies the files rather than creates them, that it may not be possible to use other than a 4k block size. But on the other hand, I wanted to use dbca to ensure that I created the database like an Oracle 9.2 database, rather than just create it like I would in Oracle 8i. Has anyone else faced this issue and have any thoughts to share? Thanks. Dennis Williams DBA Lifetouch, Inc. RE: When was analyze run last?
Title: RE: When was analyze run last? Ron, Others have mentions the LAST_ANALYZED column of DBA_INDEXES or DBA_TABLES. Sorry but no such columns in 7.3.4. You could look at the LAST_ANALYZED column of DBA_TAB_COLUMNS. It will tell you when the table was last analyzed and you might assume that the index was also analyzed then. If you analyze tables with a FOR clause, the indexes may not have been analyzed. Also since it is possible to analyze an index without the tables, the index could have been analyzed more recently than the table. Both are unlikely but still a possibility. Watch out for DBA_TAB_COLUMNS as it's name isn't exactly right. It also includes views. Below is something I use to check when the tables were last analyzed. You could add in DBA_INDEXES to get your answer. select a.owner, a.table_name, a.last_analyzed from dba_tab_columns a, dba_tables b where b.owner not like 'SY%' and a.owner = b.owner and a.table_name = b.table_name group by a.owner, a.table_name, a.last_analyzed order by 3 desc; There is the INDEX_STATS view. Unfortunately, it only holds information on one index at a time. Jerry Whittle ACIFICS DBA NCI Information Systems Inc. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 618-622-4145 -Original Message- From: Smith, Ron L. If money is an issue consider: 1) Presenting - your conference fee is waived or reduced (for quick tips) 2) Volunteering - I volunteered when it was held in Denver and received $300 off for being a room monitor for a day 3) Sharing hotel room - I prefer the solitude of a hotel room to decompress/working on my presentation, but if money is tight, it's not a bad way to go. Then again, after sharing a 'room' (about the size of a cubicle) at Gorak Shep, Nepal with 2 other men, anything with indoor plumbing is luxurious. 4) Shopping around/staying offsite - I found a significantly better rate on a room on Expedia for San Diego. Not sure about Dolphin Swan... Of course, the best reason to spend the money... Put a face with all those anonymous geeks who post smart-@ss RTFM comments on the list... moving Vertias quick io files in oracle
I am trying to move some oracle files that have been quick ioed using Veritas. I have no problem creating quickio files or growing them but when I try to move them I get SQL / alter database rename file '/u16/oracle/proddata/atest.dbf' to '/u18/oracle/prod * ERROR at line 1: ORA-01511: error in renaming log/data files ORA-01516: nonexistent log file, datafile or tempfile '/u16/oracle/proddata/atest.dbf' All the lovely manual says regarding moving files is: trying moving the hot files. I tried making a new quick io file on the new disk, copying the unix file using cp -rp and did an ls -lrt and the file looks fine, linked and everything. But when I alter the tablespace offline and try the move I get the above. Anybody know how to do this? RE: table size.
This is expected behaviour. COMPRESS=Y doesn't make reference to the amount of space occupied by rows, just the amount of blocks allocated to the object as a whole. It's one of the great misunderstood parameters; really it should have been called COALESCE. Richard's suggestion will probably work (depending on your INITIAL storage definition for that table). Alternatively, pre-create the table at the required size before importing the table. Use IGNORE=Y on the import. Also, a quick thought; if you really deleted 500 million rows, leaving 8 million behind it would have far quicker to copy those 8 million out and drop the table. RE: Oracle Applications Development Database Refresh
Jared, I *think* this is 10.7 character. It would be if your users use a VT terminal emulator to access the application. Be aware though that a combination of Character/Smart client could exist... In this case, it does not matter though as the work that you would do will be the same. I don't believe it is NCA ( isn't that the Java Workstation version? You know, the one at Open World that never worked? ;) If you used any form-type interface within a Browser, then it would be NCA. There are some web based elements though, such as Self Server Web Apps. The difference is that NCA works like a form (Enter/Execute Query for e.g.) while the SSWA is a pure Web-type interface. How would I identify Smart Client? The Smart Client set consists of the Application (Forms) working off either a 'Client' PC. In most cases, this is via a shared service such as Citrix - on a Windows box in any case. In other words a very thick (smart!?!?!) client. Scott S - In many cases, the Apps SysAdmin performs the work on the 'applmgr' and related APPS/APPLSYS accounts after the Db/Appltop copy and the DBA is not involved. Re:RE: Setting Up EXTPROC
John, First question, is this the first extproc listener that you've setup on this server? If your configuring a second, you can't really do that as there can be one and only one extproc_connection_data entry in your tnsnames.ora file. What you need in this case is a new library that points to the new shared library file. I have RTFM, and sarcasm it's oh so clear /sarcasm. Anyway, how does one go about figuring out the LISTENER_KEY? Is the EXTPROC_SID really a SID, or a program name (like FNDFS or OEORPC in the Apps)? Is the ORACLE_HOME really the ORACLE_HOME or the directory the program name is in (again, like the apps). Any real examples would be greatly appreciated. Kathy, Ok, I log in as oracle, touch a file I get 664 permission on it. But when I create a file through OEM or a plsql procedure I get 644 permissions. My umask is 02. The umask value is overwritten by the program's mode of writing the file. In other words, umask is the default mode when an override is not specified. For example, the trace files created by the Kernel do not have world read permissions regardless of umask - they are set to world-read using the '_trace_files_public = TRUE' parameter which instructs the kernel to create these files in a world-readable mode. STATSPACK and sppurge.sql
Hi all, I'm going to (finally!) be implementing STATSPACK on our 8.1.7.2.0 DB. The thing that kills me is all the junk that ?/rdbms/admin/sppurge.sql leaves behind! Is there any harm in deleting the rows from these tables: select table_name from user_tab_columns where column_name = 'SNAP_ID'; ...where the SNAP_ID is in the range I want to delete? Then went back into oracle and as system: alter database rename file '/u16/oracle/proddata/atest.dbf' to '/u18/oracle/proddata/atest.dbf' And then I get this error. : * : ERROR at line 1: : ORA-01511: error in renaming log/data files : ORA-01516: nonexistent log file, datafile or tempfile : '/u16/oracle/proddata/atest.dbf' : -Original Message- Sent: Monday, July 08, 2002 12:28 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Kathy. I am still a little new to Veritas, but maybe I can make a couple of helpful suggestions. We use exact names instead of the links. This means that the name in the database and the name on the file system are actually different. We have to move the file at the os level and then change the name in the database using the names the database is expecting. (we have a ::cdev:vxfs: on the end of the files). The use of the symbolic links is a little more straight forward. It is necessary to move the file (actually a .file) and create a new symbolic link for it (with the Q I/O extension). Then in the database the .file name is used without the . I beleive. Hi Kathy, Ok then why would my oem on one solaris system write files as 664 and another write files as 644? both databases have '_trace_files_public = TRUE' parameter. both are writing out files using utl_file. The only difference is one sits on a Netapp filer. Was the Database/Listener bounced after a change in umask? This _could_ explain the difference in behaviour... The values are read during process startup - a change in umask would not be noticed unless the Db/listener is bounced. Was this the case? I am confused too! We need someone to do 10 pages on configuring Tivoli Storage manager and Legato Networker for use with RMAN, and then interfacing with them with RMAN commands. RE: moving Vertias quick io files in oracle
Kathy, I am assuming that you did a cp and not a mv to get the file into /u18 from /u16. If you do an ls -ltra in both directories (u16 u18) is there an atest.dbf and a .atest.dbf in both directories (atest.dbf links to .atest.dbf::cdev:vxfs:)? The error seems to imply that the original file or directory does not exist. donita :Date: Mon, 08 Jul 2002 12:44:59 -0800 :To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L [EMAIL PROTECTED] :X-Comment: Oracle RDBMS Community Forum :X-Sender: Kathy Duret [EMAIL PROTECTED] :From: Kathy Duret [EMAIL PROTECTED] :Subject: RE: moving Vertias quick io files in oracle :X-ListServer: v1.0g, build 71; ListGuru (c) 1996-2001 Bruce A. RE: Oracle Applications Development Database Refresh
Thanks John. Definitely not NCA. Definitely not using terminal emulation, so it must be the smart client. I'll take a whack at it using your instructions as soon as I can get to it. The dev instance is on the same (underpowered) box as production server. I don't yet know if this simplifies things, or complicates them. Re: slightly OT, permissions unix/oracle puzzler
Kathy, I'm going to assume that what you're trying to do is create UTL_FILE files that have group r/w permissions. As others have pointed out, you're being thwarted by the perms of the oracle process. Here's how I've overridden that in the past. Assuming your directory is /u01/utl_file/db01/, create a new group called util_file in unix. Now change the group and perms on the directory: chgrp util_file /u01/utl_file/db01/ chmod g+rxs /u01/utl_file/db01/ Now all files created in the /u01/utl_file/db01/ file directory will have a group of util_file with read permission. Just add the util_file group to users that need access. Read the chmod man page for details. RE: STATSPACK and sppurge.sql
Jesse - I'm doing this from memory, so I may be off a little. Look at the table STATS$SNAPSHOT. Records in this table are related to the other tables that are populated each time a snapshot occurs (the magic of relationships). If you delete a row from this table, rows in the other tables are automatically deleted. Since deleting statistics is a low-risk proposition for most of us, give it a try. Start by deleting 10 rows to start with, because deleting is SLOOOW!! As I recall, deleting a 100 snapshots may take 30 minutes. Anyway, this is the best way I've found to delete STATSPACK statistics. Dennis Williams DBA, 20% OCP Lifetouch, Inc.
