RE: Oracle 9i and connect as sys
The security is not as bad as it sounds. The patch is to release major software and the user gets prompted to enter the password. It is not stored any place (just UNIX variables during the running of the release). The software upgrades are released once every six months to year. Not all patches require SYS access. Only in earlier releases that granted access to SYS. However, when I build a new environment, I needed to run through the entire set of patches. Even if I use SYSTEM to grant access to SYS objects, I would need to go back and change the scripts to refer to SYS objects instead of currently connected users. And we are not supposed to go back and change scripts that have been released already :-( But we are migrating all of the application to the mainframe and none of the original release scripts will work soon any way :-( At least as part of the move, we have been going through getting rid of the public synonyms and public grants the previous DBA put in place :-) I will have to try that GRANT ANY OBJECT PRIVILEGE and let you know how it goes. - BAbette -Original Message- Tim Gorman Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2003 11:39 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Babette, This is how database security unravels. Pretty soon, the password to SYS is embedded everywhere, used everywhere, and everyone knows it. Thus, the DBA ends up with the pager and responsibility for fixing stuff, but everyone else can cause that pager to go off with a stupid goof at 3:00am where they shouldn't have been able to goof up. It sounds like the patching utility only needs a couple privileges, but instead all of the goddess-like privileges of SYS are provided. Pretty soon, it seems normal for people and programs to connect as SYS on a regular basis. And so it goes... A couple alternatives: * use 9i "GRANT ANY OBJECT PRIVILEGE" to let another account have an incredible amount of authority, which is OK if you don't know exactly what permissions will be needed ahead of time... * grant specific permissions WITH GRANT OPTION to another user, a more focused approach than the shotgun "GRANT ANY OBJECT PRIVILEGE" approach, provided you know what permissions will be needed ahead of time. This has been around forever... * encapsulate such actions within a stored procedure owed by SYS, which may seem cumbersome but allows all kinds of control. Not just "who can do what" (which is basically what permissions and roles provide), but also "during what time", "from where", "from what program", "from what location", etc... Just this Friday, I was wrapping up an installation engagement and one of the last things we did was change all the passwords. Standard practice. Immediately, one of the development managers comes boiling out of his office screaming "Who changed the passwords to SYS and SYSTEM?". I 'fessed up and asked him why he thought he needed it. He turned red and snarled that he just needed it and never you mind, turned on his heel and went in the CIO's office, then came boiling back with approval. We turned it over, and within 5 minutes I logged back onto the system and saw SQL*Plus running with the SYS/SYSTEM password visible to anyone and everyone who can run the UNIX "ps" command. I looked at the scripts he was running, noticed that all he wanted SYS/SYSTEM for was to create PUBLIC SYNONYMs. I left to catch my plane... Hope this helps... -Tim on 8/17/03 6:09 PM, Babette Turner-Underwood at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Tim / Peter / Michael > > Thanks for the information. RE: Tech meetings
Title: Message From time to time, we go through a series of "show and tell" where people do about an hour long presentation, question and answer on some usually technical topic. Occasionally these presentations are business related (eg explaining how the Canada Pension Plan international agreements affects the programs we are doing). They die off, then the director resurrects them by asking for volunteers. Occasionally, people are told to do a presentation on a specific work -related topic. - Babette -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of Rudy ZungSent: Tuesday, July 01, 2003 3:05 PMTo: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-LSubject: RE: Tech meetings Don't know if what we do in our shop here qualifies for your question or not, but our dev groups do "stand-up meetings." Relatively quick meetings (that can be done standing up; no meeting rooms required) that are usually finished in about 20 minutes. In the stand-ups, we get heads-up for things and specifications that might be coming down the pipeline from the product management and design side. We get a quick update on the state of deployment (what version has rolled into production, what version is in the QA pipeline) and what the next impending set of changes are about to get pushed onto the dev servers. If there's any potential "gotcha"s that have been experienced (especially on the coding front) they get publicized in the stand-ups as well. The main point of our stand-ups are to make sure that all the developers are relatively aware of the scheduling and direction of the product, and to highlight any programming difficulties and workarounds that might arise so that when different developers hit those gotchas, they'll already know that a solution might already. These stand-up meetings are basically within a development team/group. Project leads have their own meetings with the product management group. So essentially, the product manager has his own meetings; then the product manager has meetings with the dev project leads to convey what they want in the next iteration of the product; the project leads then present these to the dev group in a stand-up meeting. -Original Message-From: M.Godlewski [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, July 01, 2003 12:30 PMTo: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-LSubject: Tech meetings List, Just wondering if your organization has tech meetings, and what is discussed and what the goals of the meetings are? RE: Urgent: restore from hot backup w/o archivelogs
Well If you don't mind possibly destroying the database you are trying to restore, you can use: alter session set events 'IMMEDIATE trace name ADJUST_SCN level 1'; We had a strange failure / recovery situation and I was given this command. The description posted in the TAR was: "A data block SCN is ahead of the current SCN. The ORA-600 [2662] occurs when an SCN is compared to the dependent SCN (which is stored in a UGA variable). If the SCN is strictly less than the dependent SCN, then we signal the ORA-600 [2662] internal error, and print out the SCN, the dependent SCN, and the dependent SCN block." *** this can corrupt the database *** I later used it in another case, where the Sys Admin had restored the wrong version or combination of files and used level 100 instead of 1 to do a bigger increase. This was on a test instance and I didn't want to rebuild if I had a way around in the meantime. - Babette -Original Message- Chitale Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2003 10:09 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Well, My mind seems to have stopped working now. RE: sqllldr, long datatype and carriage returns - an ugly combin
For that large amount of data SQL*Plus copy should not take any longer than dumping to a flat file, ftp large file and sqlldr. SQL*Plus copy command will handle the longs. Plus you will not need additional disk storage to hold the intermediate files. You will need to have a SQL*net connection between the two databases though. Babette Turner-Underwood -Original Message- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 12, 2002 6:54 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L combin Thanks for that Peter and Yechiel, whilst both posts were useful I don't think they really answered my questions. I know I could replace the CR characters but that involves a vast amount of pre-processing (these are very large tables and there are hundreds of them and they are in constant use). It may work on a varchar2 field but I am not sure about long (easy enough to test I know). I know there is also an issue with PL/SQL having a 32K limit on an variable so I could not assign it within a pl/sql loop. There is also an issue of data integrity, this is part of a database migration and we need to do it in the fastest manner possible (30 minute downtime would be nice). The combination of moving o/s, Oracle versions and having a lot of longs reduces our options quite significantly. We have looked at a 3rd party ETL tool which does what we want and moves the data very very quickly (it does not write to disk and therefore does not need to perform any file i/o processing). However it stops dead when it hits a CR (it uses sqlldr as it's main means of loading data). Changing data would not endear us to the users and gain any confidence in the process Thanks anyway John -Original Message- Sent: 12 December 2002 10:40 To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L combinatio You can use select translate(field1||chr(126)||field2||chr(126),chr(015),' ') in the program that creates the sequential file. this will replace every chr(015) with blank. RE: Online Index Rebuild Tuning
Sorry to take so long to respond (not much time for list lately...) If you are going to be rebuilding regularly, then DO NOT use compressed indexes. They save lots of space and seem to work fairly well, but you cannot do online index rebuilds with them (at least it was that way in 8.1.6) Another option might be to use partitioned indexes so you can rebuild a partition at a time. Strange as it may seem, Oracle allows you to create partitioned indexes on non-partitioned tables. Babette Turner-Underwood -Original Message- Richard Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2002 4:36 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Connor, That's a good point - something which I really hadn't thought about. Unfortunately many of the indexes relate to foreign keys and primary keys, which are an ever increasing value here. I've already tried rebuilding one or two small indexes and they shrunk from ~180MB to ~70MB. Also, I have heard about compressing indexes, but it is something I have never used before. Can anyone shed some light on the topic? Are there any drawbacks (ie: reduced IO but increased processing)? Thanks, Mark. Interesting DBMS_APPLICATION usage
We were testing a small script that calls DBMS_APPLICATION to set the module and action. Most of the time we did not see the results in V$SESSION. We added a dbms_lock.sleep to make the script run a little longer. What was happening was BOTH SQL*PLus and TOAD seem to update the program (and DBMS_APPLICATION info). Immediate after the SQL script terminated, the information at V$SESSION had been reset to what it was before the script was called. interesting, no ? RE: New development in Cobol or PL/SQL - please help
Thanks for all the comments I did do a little more digging. I found out that the reason they are using Cobol is that there are Cobol programs that have the business logic for doing benefit calculations. They do not want to re-write those modules. So they are doing the entire application in Cobol and only using the database as a place to save the data. As far as staff and skills, the current job market has an excess of persons with PL/SQL skills. So I don't think the decisions was made with any respect to how many people will be able to maintain this over the next 10 years. The number of people with COBOL skills is declining at the organization. But if they keep doing new development in COBOL, then maybe they will be able to convince the younger programmers to learn it :-P I will have to look into the MQ-Series module for Oracle that was mentionned. -Original Message- WILLIAMS Sent: Monday, November 18, 2002 8:09 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Babette - For some code, PL/SQL will offer significantly better performance. For other code it may not matter so much. One of an organization's biggest hidden investments is their code. If they feel COBOL is where they prefer to invest, that isn't the end of the world. For one thing, it doesn't tie them as closely to Oracle as coding everything in PL/SQL would. If you want better reasons not to do this, you need to nose around and find who the players are and what is their motivation. Arguments succeed much better when you know your audience. RE: Oracle on MVS able to submit JCL ??
Thanks but EVERYTHING is on the mainframe (including Oracle). As far as I know there is no such thing as PIPEs and daemon processes on the mainframe. I can place skeleton JCL in a proclib. You need to set the parameter "site filetype=JES". On my web site (http://www.oracle-developer.us/code.htm) I have code posted to allow Oracle 8i or greater to FTP directly from Oracle. Here is an example using just UNIX: HOW TO SUBMIT A MAINFRAME BATCH JOB FROM UNIX STEP ONE: Create your jcl in a unix file. remember to use all upper case! EXAMPLE: iefbr14.jcl //M33TEST1 JOB (HRP,TEST),M33,CLASS=V,MSGCLASS=X,NOTIFY=M33 //STEP01 EXEC PGM=IEFBR14 //DD1 DD DSN=M33.TEST.FILE2, // UNIT=HRSDA, // SPACE=(CYL,(1,1),RLSE), // DCB=(RECFM=FB,LRECL=080,BLKSIZE=27920,DSORG=PS), // DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE) //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=* //SYSOUT DD SYSOUT=* //* STEP TWO: Create a job script to FTP your JCL to the mainframe. 192.6.1.79 is the address of the mainframe for this example. 'uid' should be replaced with your user id. 'password' should be replaced with your password. 'iefbr14.jcl' is the file that we created in step one. RE: Oracle & SAN Experiences?
Title: The Sys A client site that I was supporting a while ago had big problems with their NAS. While doing Oracle backups to tape, the application would drop connections. In a SAN environment, there might also be similar problems. -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of David WagonerSent: Friday, November 08, 2002 9:59 AMTo: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-LSubject: Oracle & SAN Experiences? The Sys. Admin. team wants to consolidate storage (and probably get a new toy too) on all of our servers, so they are evaluating a SAN (LSI Logic E4600). The DBA team is doing some research to determine the pros and cons of doing this, and Id like to hear any of your experiences (good and bad) using SAN with Oracle. My understanding is that all of our database servers would remain intact, but the attached disk storage would move into the SAN. So, we still have the Production, Test, and App. servers with their processors and memory, Oracle homes, etc. The SAN will hold database files from Production, Test, Apps., staging, ODS,data warehouse, etc. Their arguments: -the SAN is very scalable (500 GB 40 TB) -easy to manage disks in one central location -fancy statistics collection on all SAN disks -much higher throughput on the fiber SAN connections than with locally attached disk arrays -capable of using mixed RAID levels (0, 1, 1+0, 5, etc.) -can partition sets of disks in the SAN for specific server access -Snapshot backup capability is very fast in the SAN (much faster than traditional Oracle backups) DBA arguments: -How will this affect database performance? -What are the drawbacks, if any, with the pre-fetch of data performed by the SAN (i.e., SAN cache) -How tunable is the SAN -Fast, small disks are better for performance and less wasted space than the typical huge disks in a SAN (its possible to use smaller disks in the SAN) -Prove it! After reading the Sane SAN article and a case study about Volvo implementing a SAN, I believe its possible to have a great Oracle/SAN implementation if its setup correctly and tuned. Other resources that you can Google are Using SVA SnapShot with Oracle, Performance Benchmark LSI Logic E4600 (STK D178), SAN Storage for Open Systems Environments, and of course check the OraFaq. RE: Access with ACCESS
They might drop it, but then you could have a DBMS-JOB that checks for this view in each schema and if it doesn't exist, re-creates it for them... saves having to remember doing it when creating new DEV schemas ... In an attempt to see how tight we could make security we took this notion a step further and removed public access and ownership to ALL of the USER_, ALL_ and DBA_ views (in a separate test database of course). Worked surprisingly well. We are considering using this as part of our security strategy to lock down our database. -Original Message- Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 7:54 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Here's another option which is far from perfect and is definitely sneaky (which is what I like about it)... Depending on which ODBC driver is in use, upon connection the objects available for use will be queried via the ALL_OBJECTS database view. In the past, when we've wanted to limit the objects viewable from MS-Access and MS-Excel, we modified ALL_OBJECTS accordingly. For example, during a Sybase-to-Oracle conversion, the users were used to seeing all object names in lower-case and belonging to a schema named "dbo". So in Oracle, we created objects in a schema by that name (all in lower-case), but they always saw hundreds of other objects (usually related to public synonoyms) that they didn't care about. Instead of getting rid of all the public synonyms, we modified the view ALL_OBJECTS within their account to make it more selective about what it displayed. It seemed to work well and everyone was happy... My suggestion to you is somewhat similar, and based upon the idea that "legitimate" users may likely not query the ALL_OBJECTS view (which could a heck of an assumption, but see how it fits). For these user accounts, create a private ALL_OBJECTS view within that account that queries from SYS.ALL_OBJECTS where 1 = 2, thereby guaranteeing that it returns no rows. Thus, users of that ODBC driver will see nothing to query from... Of course, they may notice the new view in their account and drop it. But I guess that depends on their level of sophistication. The upshot is that it is easy to implement and could be effective, depending on the sophistication of these users... Just an idea; your requirements may vary and remember that different ODBC drivers may use other views or techniques to populate a list of objects. But it could be a very cheap way to lock out folks using ODBC applications... - Original Message - To: "Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2002 10:20 AM > Some options could be: > > - password protected roles > - application roles (9i) > - virtual private database > > each being enabled via the applications that *you* > control and thus not from Access. > > Some/all of the above could possibly be subverted in > time by a smart and malicious user, but it should > suffice in most cases > > hth > connor > > --- "Jesse, Rich" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Unfortunately, not really. To recover deleted data, you may want to take a look at LogMiner. Less risk. Normally, to recover deleted data, you will be performing the TSPITR on a test (or recovery) database so you avoid losing the data changes that were made to your production system after the deletion. Otherwise, you are performing a "full database point in time recovery". The concept behind TSPITR is to perform recovery on a small subset of your database somewhere separate from your production database, then once you've recovered the data you need, export and import it back to the production system. Without more details on your situation and your experience level, about the most help I can be is to say "take a full backup first". Dennis Williams DBA Lifetouch, Inc. Re: index table corruption...
!! Please do not post Off Topic to this List !! A few different scenarios 1) missing indexes will have slower performance than possible 2) invalid indexes ... will not be used, and again will have slower performance. (indexes can be invalid due to failing direct loads, moving tables) 3) corrupt indexes ... unpredictable results. Often you will get errors (like ORA-600 or corrupt block), but I have also seen where the result set was wrong and no indication of a problem (typically manifests itself in different number of rows returned when do select statement and do the same select modified to invalidate the use of indexes (old PK+0 or PK || '' trick). Re: Fast Refresh of Snaphots Locking?
There was a bug (fixed 8.1.7.?) in the way oracle handles snapshot refreshes. Basically it invalidates all SQL that is using the refresh and takes a lock on the object that is being used. We found that this caused severe shared_pool fragmentation on a few of our instances. Also, the way Oracle does a snapshot refresh is a full tablescan of the snapshot log. So once the log gets fairly full, you need to do an alter table move; to lower the HWM to get half decent performance again. - Babette - Original Message - To: "Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 3:30 AM > When we do a fast refresh of a snapshot and the number of entries in the log > are high (750,000+) our users complain about poor performance for approximately > a 5 - 10 minute period. Re: OT Terrorist Acts
I am in Canada and everyone in our office was as affected by this terrible tragedy and loss of life as if it had happened to us. We were saddened and sickened by it and feared for many of our co-workers, several of whom are located in New York. The event was much worse than the media let on. I suspect the government has issued some kind of warning to the media. Yesterday around noon (on the radio), we had heard that there were 7 or 8 planes involved and one or two of them crashed at or near Camp David. By 12:30, when I turned on the television (and for the rest of the night), all we heard was there were four planes that were hijacked and crashed. I checked the paper today and the line is still just stating four planes!! I am beginning to wonder how much worse it really was than the media was allowed to let on. That thought is very worrisome. RE: Performance analysis (enqueue and buffer busy waits)
I am curious. What are you trying to accomplish by decreasing rollback segment size?? - Babette -Original Message- Lewis Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2001 6:52 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Looking at your trace file, most of your lost time appears to be in an update of F4211. I doubt if freelists are your problem, but possibly the lost time is initrans. NB from 8.1.6 you can change initrans without rebuilding the table - which is good if you don't have to go back to the old data and keep doing the same concurrent updates. There is no point in going above initrans = 20, but you might push it up to 10. This may improve the enqueue (TX mode 4?) problem, but if it does it will probably make the log sync problem worse. Try and swing more resources into DBWn - increase LRU latches to start with, and check whether async I/O, I/O slaves, or multiple db_writers works best for you. You may also want to review the size of your log files (upwards), and your rollback segments (downwards). RE: No TNSListner service after intall 8.1.7 on Win 2k
Thanks Bruce. That ifile part was the part I was missing. (looks like the the closest I can get to a unix link) I like the ifile implementation better than having two copies of the init.ora. Babette -Original Message- Bruce (CALBBAY) Sent: Friday, August 17, 2001 12:21 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Babette, I'm not sure if I have read this anywhere but I think that the registry entry (as created by oradim) might be used when the service is started. However, when using startup the Oracle executable looks in %oracle_home%\database for the file initMINE.ora. What I do is create a file called in the database directory that has just 1 line - an ifile pointing to the pfile in the pfile directory. This is what the Database create wizard does in terms of the inti file. So for example I have something like: C:\oracle\product\817\database>type initbdb2.ora IFILE='c:\oracle\admin\BDB2\pfile\pfileBDB2.ora' C:\oracle\product\817\database>dir c:\oracle\admin\bdb2\pfile Directory of c:\oracle\admin\bdb2\pfile 19/07/2001 13:49 . 19/07/2001 13:49 .. 20/07/2001 14:514,733 pfileBDB2.ora Of course, just like Unix, when using the startup command you can specify the full path and name of the init file if you wish. I figured I didn't need a listener on my w2k box because everything was going to be local. However I couldn't connect via sqlplus gui without a listener (no listener error - maybe because I am specifying the sid). I guess it's just another difference between Oracle on windows and Oracle on Unix. If I remember right (it's been s long) when you connect in Unix with the $ORACLE_SID as part of your env, you can do so without @. If you do it with the @, it looks for a listener. When connecting via a windows gui, you are specifying the sid. I'm guessing it's doing something similar to the @ in the background. The cmd window connects without the @ because it's in the environment. By the way, how do you display an environment variable in Windows? I thought it was echo %ORACLE_SID%, but that doesn't work. Ahh but it does not have to sit there just waiting !!! We had a DEC TruCluster, with the ASE failover software (available software everywhere). This was NOT OPS We still used our failover box but for less powerful and less critical app. We decided that during failover, we could tolerate slightly less than optimum performance and had BOTH systems set-up to failover but used different init.ora files so they used different amounts of resources on failover. You could easily extend this idea to have your "sandbox" on that big server just sitting there and not use much disk space allocated to it. Re: Checking Oracle user Process in unix
No, Not quite right. Oracle WILL spawn a process if you are using dedicate server processes. It will ONLY NOT spawn the process if you are using MTS (well technically it could, if it needed an additional server process and you were not yet at the max_servers value but I digress...) Message - From: Jyoti N To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Sent: Thursday, August 16, 2001 3:32 PM Subject: RE: Checking Oracle user Process in unix Whenever you say $sqlplus , Oracle spawns a dedicated server process to connect to database using Bequeath protocol (in this case) which bypasses the listener ,I guess. When you use the connect string(sqlplus@>), Oracle connects thru the listener process/port(whatever), so probably, it does not require to spawn another process. Two possible reasons 1) crsprod (the database for the db link) is on a remote machine. Thanks for investigating and sharing this with us - Babette -Original Message- Lewis Sent: Wednesday, August 15, 2001 7:16 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Quick follow up to the bitmap sizing for larger files: I've quoted this 20-30,000 figure in my book as applying to both 'ordinary' LMTs and 'temporary' LMTs. However following our discussions, and a conversation with Ken Robinson from Oracle, I've run a couple of tests on 8.1.7 and the 2-bytes per extent that led to me quoting these figures applies only to temporary LMTs. In an ordinary LMT, one bit equates to one extent, so for an 8K block size, which gives you 6 blocks (64K - 2 blocks) in the first bitmap you could build ca. 380,000 extents in a single file before adding more bitmap at the end; for a very small file with its special one-block bitmap, you could still at about 63,500 extents without a new chunk of bitmap appearing. Jonathan Lewis Seminars on getting the best out of Oracle Last few places available for Sept 10th/11th See http://www.jlcomp.demon.co.uk/seminar.html | Earlier experiments indicated that for very | large files, with small extents, so that the | total extent count exceeded about 20,000 - | 30,000 (related to block size and therefore | number of blocks actually available from the | 64K for bitmap) - an extra 64K space would | be pre-allocated at the head of file. Re: computer history stories - Now: Age discrimination?
Speaking of beer. My husband had his IQ tested AFTER he discovered beer and whiskey. A few years later he gave up the stuff and his IQ went up remarkably. Perhaps IQ is just a measure of sobreity ? ;-) - Babette - Original Message - To: "Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 11:22 AM > M...beer > I think your sort of bringing up that whole nature nurture issue, good lord > that's a tough one. Re: Exploding the Myths paper
Hey Rachel, long time, no chat Hope things worked out well for you and whoever at IOUG (the gossip in me always want to know more ;-) Would have sat next to you in Anita's presentation but you sat in the FRONT row, and I was late :-( I also had to find Peter Smith as I had a problem with my air reservation and it looked like he might need to drive me and miss the closing session (I was able to get a shuttle). This paper sounded really intriuging and I wanted to check it out. I looked under www.nyoug.org but could not find it under "Presentations From Various Allstars". Great user site by the way! (I think you are involved on the executive right?) I take it your meetings are quarterly ? Would love to present some time but cannot afford the travel to New York :-( . that I am Waaay too busy with my job doing remote DBA work ... I barely have time to even read the list serves, let along respond to any of them I am only 10 months behind ... Take care Babette [EMAIL PROTECTED] (best one to use) or [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - To: "Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, July 01, 2001 8:15 PM > Okay, I've been told that the paper and slides for my presentation Exploding > the Myths is now up on the NYOUG site > > www.nyoug.org > > Rachel > _ > Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com > > -- > Please see the official ORACLE-L FAQ: http://www.orafaq.com > -- > Author: Rachel Carmichael > INET: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Fat City Network Services-- (858) 538-5051 FAX: (858) 538-5051 > San Diego, California-- Public Internet access / Mailing Lists > > To REMOVE yourself from this mailing list, send an E-Mail message > to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note EXACT spelling of 'ListGuru') and in > the message BODY, include a line containing: UNSUB ORACLE-L > (or the name of mailing list you want to be removed from). CURSOR_SHARING=FORCE
We have noticed an interesting side "effect" of using CURSOR_SHARING=force.When using SQL (simple INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT...), and you check v$SQLAREAyou see that yes, Oracle indeed replaced hard-coded values with bindvariablesTRY: SELECT DEPTNO, LOC from DEPT where LOC='Boston';select sql_text from v$sqlarea where sql_text like 'SELECT DEPTNO';BUT this does not work for parameters to procedures or functions.TRY:create procedure upd_dept ( in_deptno number, in_loc varchar2) begin update dept set loc = in_loc;end;exec upd_dept ( 20, 'BOSTON');select sql_text from v$sqlarea where sql_text like '%upd_dept%';Thus we need to change calling our table APIs from :upd_dept( 20, 'BOSTON');todefine my_deptno := 20;define my_location := 'BOSTON';upd_dept( :my_deptno, :my_location);To use bind variables. Thus making extensive use of table APIs will havemultiple copiesof SQL in shared pool UNLESS done this way and CURSOR_SHARING has no effect.According to Oracle, it is how it is supposed to work, but we were notexpecting the behaviour.Just another one of those pleasant surprises from Oracle :-)Babette[EMAIL PROTECTED]
