RE: ** can two processes use the same rollback extent
1)rollback segment will not shrink. Correct, assuming you do not shrink it manually. 2)It will keep growing till tablespace fills up. Correct assuming that you have a SQL statement that causes the rollback segment to grow in such a way and that you have no constraints on the rollback segments to prevent unconstrained growth (e.g. maxextents). Note that this may not be a good thing... if you have one transaction that causes one rbs to grow really large, that may prevent growth of other rbs's. Unless you are manually assigning rollback segments to every transaction, that could have negative consequences. It is, IMHO, best to have use automated undo, if possible, then you don't need to worry about these things. If you can't use automated undo, then create a nice big tablespace, but also use optimal, setting it to a reasonable size. 3)And there will be no 'snapshot too old' errors? Wrong. Even with large rollback segments, 1555's are possible depending on a number of things. Robert G. Marketing is as much as how you present yourself as it is anything else. I've seen uncertified and unexperienced guys who could write a resume that would make you think they could walk on water, reorg, defrag, code in C#, asp and java all while designing the newest, latest, greatest hybrid automobile. Of course, when you pin them down to facts you find out they they haven't a clue what SQL*Plus is, they have never done a hot backup, they can only write a hello world C program, they thought java was something you picked up at Starbucks and they think hybrids are flowers that are cross polinated. Marketing yourself is about learning what people want to hear Of course, one would hope that you would tell the TRUTH when you market yourself, but it's become clear to me over the years that there is a certain percentage of the population that hansn't figured out the truth angle yet. Daniel, I agree 100% with what you said Somehow we must find a way to come out of our shell. I am among those coming out of my shell is HARD standing up at IOUG-A, or UKOUG or wherever and speaking to that room full of people is one of the hardest things I do. I just make myself... every year I force myself to submit those abstracts, because I know it helps me grow as a person. So, THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NEVER DONE IT BEFORE, SIGN UP AND DO IT SO I DON'T HAVE TO :-D Even writing is hard, because you put it all out there for the critics to trounce on. However, it's wonderful when you get the positive feedback and someone says, Wow your book was great! one of those makes up for about 100 bad comments to me. Like so many others here, I see the DBA life changing Like so many others, I've been doing it so long, that I'm starting to see that it's time for a change. maybe 5 years, maybe longer we will see. Am I the only one that this job tires and stresses out? :-) Best part of it, though, is I've made some great friends even if I only see them once or twice a year! Cheers, Robert -Original Message- To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Sent: 10/3/2003 11:54 AM Robert, Well said. I think the problem goes farther back than just us sitting in our cubes. I hate to stereotype, but there is some truth in saying that 'geeks' tend to be somewhat introverted, where many in management are somewhat extroverted. This year's IOUG-A Live was a great example. Here we all are, the best and brightest in the world of Oracle, walking the halls, having intense conversations. In the midst of it all, a pharmecutical sales convention starts sharing our hallways. Talk about polar opposites! It reminded me of high school with the 'serious' students and the popular crowd. Is this any different than work? Especially those people who work in non-IT companies. We all focus on training, OCPs/OCMs, etc, but how many of us have taken a corporate communication class or engaged a business/personal coach? As for management, I've had great ones and god-awful ones. One manager tore me a new one because I explained that one of our systems was 5 minutes behind the others (in explaining the entries in a log file). I've also had ones that would step up to bat for you, even when they could easily justify the opposite. You have to figure out the political landscape, find the mines in the battlefield and step carefully. We can no longer sit in our cubes, writing complex C programs, laughing at the foibles of 'damagement' and 'lusers'. We have to find a way to integrate ourselves into the business. It's not that you have to agree 100% with what is done. If you are going to disagree, do so respectfully and with proper reasoning and documentation. Communication is composed of two pieces, what you say and what the other person hears. As for the geek work, there will always be places for those who excel at something. More appropriately, they will have a place if they can make their skills relevant. This requires understanding the bits and bytes, AND being able to put that into the context of the business need. I've enjoyed the past few years really exploring UNDO, but it is really irrelevant in the business world I live in. What is relevant here? Well, that's my next big project. I'll still be hacking away at Oracle, learning how it REALLY works, doing things that they say should/could not be done. But my goal is to make myself more proficient in a skill that will benefit the organization. My $0.03 (I'm a little long winded today...) Daniel Fink Freeman Robert - IL wrote: Mladen, this is not directed specifically at you, but you have raised something in my mind that often just irritates the heck out of me. I often hear the term Damagement, damagers, etc... and I understand it, and have had more than a few occasions where a damager has killed me Management is far from perfect, and I've met a number of managers who deserve to be kicked in the back side and sent out on the street. Yet, I often also wonder how much of this is OUR OWN FAULT. How many IT guys have I met that are way to passive, more than content to sit in there cubes and blame management, when the fault, at least in part, lies squarely with them. More than I can count. Lack of communication, lack of passion for ones own work, lack of vision, contentment in not understanding the big picture, the I'm not paid to do this syndrome or the It's not my job POV all in my eyes lead to as much failure as management. The guys who will not get their lazy behinds out of their chairs and go TALK to someone (other than the really good looking blonde down the isle) deserve to have their head chopped off as much as the manager they can't stand. I've met so many who will sit in meetings and let managers say STUPID things, never correct, never interject and so the cycle of stupidity is perpetuated. Sure, there may be cultures

RE: Oracle Masters exam
With respect to all of you out there... I hear so many complaints about greedy Oracle, and about having to take a class to get certified and the dollar cost of that. I remind you folks that Oracle is a for profit venture. It's not Oracle's responsibility to make anything affordable. It's the responsibility of Oracle to generate revenue, it is the expectation of Oracle shareholders (of which I am one) that Oracle will do such a thing. I don't care if Larry is the 6th richest guy in the universe, so what? Why does that compel him to give you anything? It's all pure market driven. If people stop signing up for classes or OCP exams, Oracle will in quick fashion figure out why and change things. If people keep signing up for classes and taking the OCP, then viola, they have hit the sweet spot and will generate some revenue too. Socialism doesn't work folks, let's face it. If the OCP Masters credentials are worth the money, then spend it. If they are not, don't spend it. If enough people don't spend the money, then something will happen. Thats how a market driven economy works. RE: Future demand for DBAs
They estimate that by 2010, a quarter of the IT workforce will be over 55 years old. Heck, thats true now in the mainframe world I think. RF -Original Message- To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Sent: 9/3/2003 8:54 AM The META Group has released a study that forecasts increased demand for DBAs in the future. They quote the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics that forecasts a 66% increase in DBAs by 2010. The two factors that META feels will increase demand are: 1. Increased use of DW 2. Aging workforce They estimate that by 2010, a quarter of the IT workforce will be over 55 years old. The new features to make databases self-managing will only help with lower value labor intensive tasks such as schema changes and performance tuning, not with higher value skills such as design and troubleshooting. Is there any way to keep the Unix root user from logging into the database (i.e. connect internal or / as sysdba)? Currently using 8.1.7.4 on Solaris 8 here. We have a couple people in our Unix admin group that feel the need to help by writing their own DB monitoring scripts. Of course, they don't know what they're talking about. They do not have formal logins for the database, but since they are root users they are connecting via connect internal. This is not only counterproductive but actually a potential security issue--just because someone has root doesn't necessarily entitle them to see the data in the database. What if it is a payroll database? So, I'm curious, is there any way to prevent access via connect internal or / as sysdba? Thanks in advance. W Note: This message is for the named person's use only. Veritas and disks
Anyone have any experience with Veritas CFS (running RAC) and disk IO? We are seeing some interesting things here with regards to available memory and disk throughput. We get great throughput when there is sufficient memory. But, as we load up DD processes, we find available memory decreasing rapidly, like the copies are being cached to free memory by veritas first. Then, after the copies appear to be done from the OS, we see consistant disk activity afterwards. I suspect that veritas is caching these cp's into memory and then writing to disk. This works great until I run out of memory, at which time the cp starts to perform terribly. Is this how Veritas works and is there any way to configure this behavor? The old issue of how can you trust your backups unless you've done a recovery. It has seemed that I get a request to build a test database at about the right interval to periodically verify the backup. It is nice to say that I would just periodically verify the backups, but like most DBAs, there is always a more pressing task. With RMAN, I assumed that I would continue this practice. It has been a pain, but I ended up with a method that works. Yep, if I can just move the datafiles over gigabit link, thats what I will do. Otherwise I just do a restore and rename... RF -Original Message- To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Sent: 8/5/2003 5:19 PM I would be interested how other sites that rely on RMAN handle this issue. I for one, don't use RMAN for that. It's too much work. There's a separate project for verifying backups. The databases I'm called on to duplicate have lately been 400-500 gigs, more than I want to pull from tape unless absolutely necesssary. It's much faster to plug two servers into a gigabit switch and copy the files across a private network at approx 100 gigabytes per hour. The biggest problem is that when the test database is recovered, it initially has the same name as the production database, then I change the name. RE: URGENT: Trying to duplicate database from cold backup - auxi
Paula, Try to mount the auxillary database manually, and see what error you get. That might help point you in the right direction in solving the problem. probably 70% of the time it's an issue with the configuration of the aux database (e.g. parameter set wrong, etc...). RE: Timestamps in trace files (and other trace file oddities)
am still learning a great deal about wait events and trace files. Cary, Mogens, Anjo, Tim, Jonathan, Wolfgang, et.al. are better authorities, so any corrections are very welcome. The time between waits is the elapsed time. If we equate elapsed time to response time, we must look at the two components of RT, wait time and service time. If the time differential is 7 minutes, x minutes is service time and y minutes is wait time. It is possible that only .01 seconds was wait time, while the remaining 6:59:99 was service time (i.e. cpu) I can't explain the scattered read issue. However, it is interesting to note that the # of blocks to be read is offset by 1 in the second wait event. Perhaps, the read request was issued, but the 65.6041 block was already in memory, so the read request was reissued minus that block. I'm not sure how the latch free enters into the picture, but I have a feeling that this wait is integral in the sequence of events. RE: RE: should you seperate indexes from tables in seperate dataf
For a given statements execution, running in serial, you will not find an index and a table being accessed in parallel. Thus, there is no contention, for a given statement, between the tables and indexes accessed by that statement. Thus, one could argue the merits of not needing to seperate indexes and data in a low concurrency environment. OTOH, high concurrency leads to hot blocks, which often leads to a requirement of distributing IO. In this case, seperating indexes and data may be one step in that direction. RAID technologies, if properly configured, can eliminate some of the risk from co-location of data of course but in the end there is no substitute for carefully laid out data. I have always followed the time-proven method of organizing disks and placing indexes away from the tables they belong to. Our warehouse is using EMC external disk. What the warehouse architect did was to stripe the EMC disks in such a way that all mount points (Sun system) are spread across all the EMC disks. What this does is to spread all files in the database across all the EMC drives. And with 4 Gig of EMC cache available, it further disproves the theory that separing indexes from data are required. The end result, in my case, is almost like one big RAM disk - where all disk IO is spread across all disk. If you do not have this arrangement, then I would still try and keep indexes and data away from each other. But let's face it, we *never* have enough disk mount points, so we end up merging things together somewhat anyway. hope this helps. Tom Mercadante Oracle Certified Professional -Original Message- Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2003 10:49 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L There has been alot of literature stating that you will recieve performance improvements by seperating indexes and tables across multiple I/O points. Ie... you have a tables tablespace and an index tablespace. If you put them on seperate hard drives, you will have less I/O contention. Now Im seeing some articles stating that this is not true. That oracle actually accesses indexes and tables serially. Now it might be useful seperate indexes from tables for maintenance purposes but this wont lower I/O contention. RE: What can cause boost in LIO/PIO?
What was this 5am job? It wasn't an analyze was it? RF -Original Message- To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Sent: 6/20/2003 11:29 AM Hey all, I'm testing out the max I/O thruput of an IBM FastT900 using a dual 2.4GHz w/1GB RAM on Win2K server (not my choice but it's just for testing) running Oracle 8.1.7. For one of my tests, I created the following heirarchical query: SELECT * FROM MYBIGTABLE GL1 START WITH GL1.TIME_STAMP LIKE '%40%' CONNECT BY PRIOR REFERENCENO = WORKORDERNO; Here's the explain plan as TOAD sees it (mangled by e-mail): Operation Object Name RowsBytes Cost SELECT STATEMENT Optimizer Mode=CHOOSE 95 K36477 CONNECT BY INDEX FAST FULL SCANMBT_TRANSTYPE 477 K 8 M 13165 TABLE ACCESS BY USER ROWID MYBIGTABLE ROWID ROW L PARTITION RANGE ALL 1 8 TABLE ACCESS FULL MYBIGTABLE 95 K9 M 36477 1 8 The CONNECT BY was purposely done against non-indexed columns so as to have the query consume more IO. Also, the instance was detuned to only have less than 8MB of buffer cache. And I had started a full direct export of the DB in an attempt to flush the SAN's 2GB shared cache. I want to see how much real physical IO this puppy can produce. I know, I know, there are several other factors involved. I don't have the SAN available to me for long for testing, so it's the best I could think of on short notice. Anyway... I ran several of these concurrently, staggering the start of each randomly by up to a minute. After introducing other loads in order to max out the SAN and after the full export of the 30GB DB completed, I started killing of the queries one-by-one, noticing the change in activity on the DB for each kill. I left four queries running when I left last night to see how long they'd take (no real purpose, just for kicks). One of the tools I'm using to monitor is Quest's Spotlight on Oracle. When I got in this AM, I noticed in SoO that the four queries were still running. I think I maxed out the SAN. System-wide event waits were over 3000ms/s. OK, to my question (finally!): The wierd thing is that after a 5:00ish AM DBMS_JOB completed, the LIOs and PIOs for the same four queries jumped dramatically. Why would this happen? CPU usage was fairly constant and there were no other processes active. I'm guessing this is an Oracle thing and not a SAN issue since the LIOs also jumped dramatically, but I could be wrong. Since I can't describe this very well, I've put an annotated screenshot of the Spotlight screen at http://society.servebeer.com/SANTA_19.png The image is about 130K. Be kind to my li'l server, I've only got a 128Kb pipe up (768Kb down). :) Any ideas? RE: What can cause boost in LIO/PIO?
makes sence to me... I've seen an analyze, if it takes a long time to run, cause odd things to happen to SQL that starts running in the middle of the analyze process. The SAN rebuild certainly sounds like a likley suspect. RF -Original Message- To: Jesse, Rich; Freeman Robert - IL; 'Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L ' Sent: 6/20/2003 12:52 PM [deft backpedaling] OK, now I think it IS the SAN. The S/A handling the SAN is helping us with our backup scenario so he's reorganizing some drives on the SAN. At about the same time he started the reorg (highly drive-intensive), my aggregate PIO rate dropped from almost 10K/s to less than 2K/s. And the LIOs dropped similarly, while the event waits increased. I'm thinking that the impact of the reorg on the SAN caused the wait events for the PIOs to grow (from 3.5K/s to 4.7K/s). This longer wait in turn caused a decrease in LIOs because the processes are too busy waiting to generate the IO requests. This explains everything except that the lack of contention to cause the IOs to boost in the first place happened at the same time as the first run of the DBMS_JOB at 5:00 AM. Coincidence? How's that sound? Only in part. It's an hourly complete rebuild of a mini-warehouse table (don't ask -- not my idea). It does do a few index creates and accompanying analyzes of those indexes and their table at the end of the procedure. I think this accounts for the very high PIO spikes at the end of every DBMS_JOB cycle, but I'm still not sure how it affected the other queries. Thx! 10046 madness
Ok, I'm a bit perplexed and I need some ideas. I have two systems. From a hardware/software POV they are exactly alike. However, one performs consistently better than the other. I'm sure this is an IO related issue. I have a shell script that does a bit of work on 10046 trace files. On both systems I have a database. Each is configured like the other. In each I loaded data into the same table the same way on each database, so the cache should be primed in each (I didn't check x$bh to be sure, I should have but they should be the same), I then ran a benchmark stored procedure in both the same way. Both systems were static at the time, so no concurrency. Data was loaded onto the same RAC node that the procedure ran on. When I processes the 10046 with a shell script I have for such things I see more wait event numbers (see below for 10046 summary wait events) from one system than the other. The average wait event time is smaller but the numbers are higher. I'm trying to figure out what the devil might cause this? Is it an issue of physical placement of data on the disks? Any ideas or thoughts or suggestions are most welcome. Here are the summary results of the 10046 traces. It's need is defined by your SLA's with regards to how much down time can I have, do I need a remote site, do I need to be able to revert to a previous image of my database, etc...etc... For some environments, offsite backups are perfectly satisfactory in this regard, at other sites, you have a hot offsite location, where you run dataguard (standby). So, you need to define your needs before you ask the question. Specifically regarding logical standby databases, they are a great idea but in my mind they are still new enough (and I've seen a bugs enough) that I don't trust them yet for mission critical application failover. I might consent to using one in combination with at least one physical standby if needs and resources allowed. Still, for right now, if my requirements dictated a standby database, I'd go physical. RAC, OTOH, is there to meet HA requirements, not DR requirements (unless you can configure a long distance RAC cluster which I have yet to see work really well yet). RAC is an added cost option to Oracle, with it's own set of headaches that may or may not be worth your time and money. Again, it depends on your needs, budget and SLA's. If you need four 9's uptime, then RAC may well be the way to go. If you have a rather stable system, and your users can stand an outage, then perhaps you do not need RAC. Again, you must define the requirements first, then look for the solutions. question 2: Among the questions is whether this is a series of databases for each unit or a central database that is shared by all? My personal rule about this is that if a given application is going to largely share data with another existing application, and there are no good reasons to separate them into their own databases (for example wildly different SLA's with regards to HA or DR), then I will simply use the same database. This avoids problems with disparate data issues (and saves a bit of memory and CPU). However if the application is self-contained, or if it uses data feeds from several systems (which is much more frequent in my experience) then it goes into it's own database and we have to decide how we are going to feed it data. Upgrade to 9.2/w2k Sent by: root 05/28/2003 12:25 PM Please respond to ORACLE-L For those of you who have upgraded to 9.2 on w2k: How many of you have ended up with such a hosed server that you had to completely wipe Oracle off of it and start with a fresh install (9.2)? It was spectacular! I ended up in this situation and I sure hope it's something I did or didn't do. I sure don't have time for this when I upgrade my production databases. How I long for those days wading through problems in unix... it was so much easier and more enjoyable... I will say this was definately a learning experience. And Tom Mercadante, your document worked like a charm, and saved my a$$... Muchas Gracias! Lisa Koivu Oracle Database Administrator Fairfield Resorts, Inc. 5259 Coconut Creek Parkway Ft. RE: skip scan index
I've had a couple kick in where full scans were happening before (badly tuned SQL with out a proper index) and in one case I saw a three index and-equal become a skip scan. I'm about 70/30 against skip scans on performance improvements with hints. RF -Original Message- To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Sent: 5/28/2003 11:35 AM I've done a little bit research and testing on this and one thing that I've found is that the optimizer will only choose a skip-scan route if the leading column of the index is relatively non-selective. I haven't been able to pin down how non-selective it has to be, but I've never had one kick in with a unique leading column, and it always seems to choose one if the leading column of the index has only a few distinct values in it. --Brian -Original Message- Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2003 5:00 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Okay, I have a developer here who has been reading the docs (this can be dangerous!) we are adding functionality to one of our applications, this will involve using multiple fulfillment houses, so we'll be adding the fulfillment vendor id to the order table. Easy, this is not a problem. We want to be able to search by order date and by fulfillment vendor id/order date Traditional design would be to add two indexes: one on order date, and a concatenated one on fulfillment vendor id/order date. The developer is telling me to create a skip scan index instead of two different ones. MY reading in the FM tells me that skip scan index is not a type of index, but rather a way Oracle uses to use an index even if the leftmost column is not in the query. Is there any benefit in my building only the one index? Our order volume is not so high (and never will be) that there is a visible performance impact if I have the two indices. This is 9i, 9.2.0.1, will be upgrading to 9.2.0.2 in the near future. Solaris Any suggestions/comments/war stories would be appreciated. I know I've seen Jonathan post on skip scan indexes before but I can't find the specific reference at the moment. Rachel __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
