RE: Training courses

2002-06-21 Thread Johnson, Michael

Rachel,

Yes , I worked at JPL in Pasadena California for 8 years
and we had all these PHDs running around. Very smart people
who could never apply their knowledge and produce work.
They would let you know how smart they were though.
Since I have not taken every oracle class it was unfair
of me to generalize the way I did.

heck, anything (presentations, classes, books) are all good or bad
depending on the knowledge of the person presenting the information and
their ability to teach

sometimes the ability to teach is more important than how much they
know. I've known really smart people who can't make anyone understand
what they know

RE: Training courses

2002-06-20 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS

Peter - Do you have a particular objective in mind? For example, would you
like to eventually complete the OCP? The normal progression (using Oracle
Education classes as a basis) would be:
1. SQL PL/SQL
2. DBA
3. Advanced topics (check education.oracle.com for descriptions of
the other 3 courses)

This will help lead to the OCP.
With your experience, you may feel that you can skip the SQL and DBA
classes. Or not, depending on whether you feel you would like a thorough
coverage to make sure you have no gaps.

There may be other areas that would be productive, depending on what future
projects you have going at work. If you will be moving to Oracle9i soon, you
might take a 9i New Features class. We are implementing RMAN, and I found
the Backup Recovery class to be very helpful.

The Internals classes are not to be missed!

I go to user group meetings, attend conferences and hang out on this
list to learn these days. Once in a while I take a new features class,
but that's rare. Conferences teach me more.

Cary is teaching a clinic in NYC in July... I don't think I can get off
work (we've got two very high priority projects, both with very short
timelines) but I'll try.

Steve Adams is planning on teaching a class in NYC in the fall... oh do
I want to go to that one too!

RE: Training courses

2002-06-20 Thread Fink, Dan

Dennis,
Excellent point! We discussed Oracle training without asking Peter
what he wanted to learn!

So...Peter,
What would you like to learn? If it is advanced Oracle DBA stuff,
I'll stand by my recommendation. Otherwise, I will defer to the list on
other areas.

Dan, and others
It is very useful to see how the top-notch people keep themselves up
to speed. But of course, any advice must be suited to the advisee. For
example, for some of us a little lower on the food chain, maybe acquiring
the OCP might be a first step. Now Peter isn't exactly a novice, but then he
didn't mention that he had the OCP, so I'm assuming not. I can see myself in
a future job interview (hopefully years from now) being asked why don't you
have an OCP?. Of course, working on the OCP myself naturally makes me a
convert. Probably the only way to make it through. And while a lot of it is
just memorization, there have been a few things I learned from it.

I concur. I received incorrect information in the beginning DBA classes, but
the time spent in the 8i Data Server Internals Seminar with Scott Gossett
was incredibly valuable (and I paid for it and the travel to Bethesda
myself).

For my money, I would rather attend the top notch user group meetings and
attend sessions by Craig, Cary, Tim, Gaja. And spend time talking and
trading stories with my fellow DBAs. I'd rather learn from those in the
trenches.

heck, anything (presentations, classes, books) are all good or bad
depending on the knowledge of the person presenting the information and
their ability to teach

sometimes the ability to teach is more important than how much they
know. I've known really smart people who can't make anyone understand
what they know

RE: Training courses

2002-06-20 Thread Rachel Carmichael

I almost never took an Oracle course. Read docs, went to conferences,
spoke with (phone) and wrote to (snail mail) other DBAs asking
questions, and what-ifs. TRYING things on my own.

How do you think the top-notch people got to BE top-notch? I
seriously doubt it was from taking Oracle classes but rather from
asking themselves questions about how the database worked and then
going and TRYING it.

People like Gaja, Cary, Mogens, Dan, Anjo live and breath this stuff
(okay, not totally but they spend a LOT of their free time on I wonder
what would happen if...)

to me, THAT is the mark of a master DBA, not Oracle's OCM

I've taken the OCP tests to prove that you don't need to either study
for them or even to have worked with the version of the database (I
passed 8 and 8i without ever having seen a database running them)
