because the second insert is returning the result of the first insert.

try running each one twice in a row and see what happens.

Try running the 2nd statement first, just after
logon to the database, and see what happens.

Then read the fine manual for sequences. ;)

Economize synapses... paste and execute in SQL*Plus.

Sorry Steve, I can't do that.

Two great figures from the 19th/20th centuries were Nicola Tesla
and Thomas Edison, with Tesla having a clear edge in the intelligence
department, while Edison was from the PT Barnum School of Business.

Given an irregularly shaped object and asked to determine its volume,
Edison would promptly drill a hole in it, get a container with
lines measuring of the volume of liquid it contained, fill the
container and thereby determine the objects volume.

While Edison would be farting around, Tesla would measure the object,
write down the measurements, then proceed to calculate the volume
of the object.

Tesla's methods scaled. Edison's didn't

We have Tesla to thank for our electric power, not Edison, due to
his thinking ability. He also invented radio. When Marconi built on
Tesla's work and tried to patent it, he found Tesla had already
visited the patent office.

As Tesla is my idol, conserving synapses is something I find
inherantly distasteful.

2002-06-26 Thread DENNIS WILLIAMS

Okay, I can't resist. If you read the history of databases, sometimes it
seems that Bill Gates is the Edison of our day. Others may have had
technically superior products, but they are mere historical footnotes.
Answers to trivia questions. And while I personally feel Oracle is
technically superior to its competitors, past and present, Larry is no
shrinking violet publicity-wise. The book The Difference Between God and
Larry Ellison relates how Ingres was developing a distributed capability.
Larry simply announced SQL*Star. No development. His developers first
learned about their new project from the media announcement. When Ingres
unveiled their product, the reporters said oh, Ingress has on just like
Oracle does. And who recalls Ingres today?

Want to have a good laugh?... read on... I don't think its OT :)

A few minutes ago, my co-worker DBA was 'ordered' by one of the Oracle
Duhvelopers from our 'preferred vendor' to fix the DUAL table so that the
application will get a *specific* Sequence Number for something.

DBA: Why do you think DUAL is the problem?
Duhveloper: ...'cause I see the PL/SQL code that says 'from dual'.

Boy! Are we in trouble or what?? ;)
