[OGD] Dactylorhiza from Himalayas

2008-08-30 Thread Nepal Biotech
I have read couple of articles and papers that mention declining population
Dactylorhiza found in Western Himalayas including Nepal. It is mainly due to
illegal collection of tubers to be used in local and exotic medicine. I am
trying to find out the quantity of tubers that are exported or sold in local
market legally or illegally. Anyone with estimate or idea in this regard?

[OGD] Orchid as food source

2005-03-17 Thread Nepal Biotech
Regarding some other orchids being edible and used as food source, in some
parts of remote areas of Nepal, wild orchids are used as cattle feed. I have
also tried eating seed pods of Dendrobium longicornu. Some native people eat
them to quench their thirst in the summer.

Thanks for your comment about the vinelike habit of orchids of the
Vanilleae tribe.
I most appreciate that you provided a reference to Dressler's book on
which
you based your assertion.

On the subject of Vanillae, you mentioned in a previous post : the fruits
are aromatic, and would be quite attractive to animals as a food source.
That is an interesting point.
Do you have any reference that indicates that animals (excluding
humans...)
actually eat vanilla pods ?
Do you know of other orchids of any genus that are a food source for
animals ?

Viateur

[OGD] Re: edible and medicinal orchids

2005-02-14 Thread Nepal Biotech
We had presented a poster and a paper on Orchids with medicinal properties
in Nepal in the year 2000 during Nepal-Japan symposium on Conservation and
Utilization of Himalayan Medicinal Resources in Kathmandu. The full paper is
in the proceedings of the symposium. At that time, 53 species of 34 genera
were listed as having medicinal properties. Most of the orchids are used in
ethnic and traditional medicines. If interested in the reprints and copies
of the paper, please contact me directly.
