I know there are many great books out there designed partly or fully for
beginners, but I'd love to hear your suggestions.

My recommendation on these lines is John Montroll's Teach Yourself Origami.

THE best one is now sadly out of print (and has been for some time). It is "The
Complete Origami Course" by Paul Jackson.

And, sadly, many of the recent (within the last 15 years) beginner books are
horrible because they have been rushed into print without proper diagram
checking. Many of them have severe errors in the instructions.

A wonderful book for adult beginners is Florence Temko's "Paper Pandas &
Jumping Frogs". It covers many basic and beginner models and introduces
some solid intermediate ones as well. One of the best thing
s about it is how clearly the diagrams explain the step-by-step
instructions.

She also suggests creative uses for the models once you've learned
them. It was first published in 1986 and is available on Amazon (and
probably elsewhere).

When I was a beginner years ago - this was the first book I found that I
could really understand. Once folding most of the models in it I had a
good understanding of many techniques, and was then able to tackle many of
the books that I found interesting but not as clearly laid out.

A friend of mine loves origami and is interested in starting to fold. She
has no experience and would prefer to start with a basic book rather than
classes or individual instruction.

'Origami' by Hideaki Sakata is a good one, also Tomoko Fuse's 'Simple
Traditional Origami'. Both can be bought used from Amazon.
