[osg-users] OSG books and merchandise at SIGGRAPH BOF

2007-07-13 Thread Paul Martz
Hi all --

I plan to bring OSG books and merchandise to the SIGGRAPH BOF this year for
resale. If you're interested in purchasing anything, please send me an email
in advance so I can place bulk orders to minimize the shipping cost. In the
email, tell me what item(s) you intend to purchase, and in what quantity. I
must receive your order no later than July 26.

Books:
 * OSG Reference Manual v2.0, $29.96+ship
 * OSG Reference Manual v1.2, $24.85+ship
 * OSG Quick Start Guide (color), $31.00+ship
 * OSG Quick Start Guide (BW), $13.40+ship

Merchandise:
View http://www.cafepress.com/openscenegraph
http://www.cafepress.com/openscenegraph for products and per-product prices.

I have to add some kind of shipping charge. I'm not sure what it will be
yet. It should be much less than if you ordered one or two items direct from
Lulu.com, skew-matrix.com, or cafepress.com, because I'll order in bulk and
average the shipping cost over all the items..

Be prepared to pay at the BOF with a check payable in US funds, or by credit
card (MasterCard, Visa, or American Express).

 Hi Paul,

Thumbs up on selling books and merchandise at the BOF. Might
I suggest you add OpenGL Distilled to the collection as
understanding OpenGL is pretty useful to OSG users ;-)

I few of the BOF's we've given away T-Shirts as prizes, its a
little bit of fun, I'll donate some this year by buying them
off cafepress and then sending on to one of you guys turning
 up for the BOF.
Perhaps a couple of books would go down better than T-Shirts though...
  Feedback welcome.

Bob Kuehne and Paul Martz are both in the northern hemisphere, so
summer mean mid 2007.

W.r.t osgViewer::SimpleViewer, this class didn't make the cut for 2.0,
rather it was replaced by the more powerful osgViewer::Viewer classes
which I enabled to work embedded just like SimpleViewer virtual of a
GraphicsWindowEmbedded class. See the osgviewer* examples like
osgviewerGLUT, SDL, FLTK and QT to see this in action.

RE: [osg-users] OSG books

2007-07-04 Thread Paul Martz
Sorry, yes northern hemisphere summer. The v2.0 book should be out soon.
Maybe available at SIGGRAPH (but don't hold your breath).

Note that the Reference Manual v1.2 covers three libraries: osg. osgUtil,
and osgDB. Bob and I considered adding osgViewer for the v2.0 book, but
Lulu.com has an upper page limit for this binding, and we would likely
exceed it if we added osgViewer. So, the v2.0 book will likely parallel the
v1.2 book and cover only osg, osgUtil, and osgDB.

Which begs the question: When will the rest of the osg distribution be
available in a reference manual? I must preface the answer with a
disclaimer: The following is all pure speculation.

Bob and I are thinking along the lines of a series of reference books that
group areas of OSG by subject:
 * the OSG nodekit reference
 * the OSG plugin reference
 * the OSG windowing system reference
 * the OSG terrain database reference
Etc. But we haven't gotten past the conceptual stage on much of this. The
windowing system reference would contain info on osgViewer, osgGA, and
osgManipulator, for example. The idea is to keep each book within Lulu's
740-page limit for soft cover perfect bound.

As I said, this is all pure speculation, so don't hold us to it.

 Hi Paul,

I have the Quick Start Guide and I must say the quality of
the book is impressive, you really do get down to using OSG
quickly. Though for the simple examples, but it is a start
for all new members of OSG. :) It also acts as a mini
reference for some of the older members who don't work full
time with OSG, the hobbiest I refering too.

The only concern I have about the official Reference is that
it is for OSG 1.2, and we are sitting at OSG 2.0 which is
also a major version change, thus plenty nice new features
and some API changes, particularly to the use of
SimpleViewer, etc thats helps with better integration with
many widget libraries. I believe the new interface will work
better with GTKMM and GTK+, as the older interface was a real
pain to use. Though I discover ease of use when I have free
time at the end of the year.

What is your plans regarding a reference for OSG 2.0?

I, for one, like that idea, and think it would be a good way to give
focused information to users. If this ever gets done, put me down for
at least one copy of each (at least, because by the time they're done,
I may have co-workers who will want them too, fingers crossed :-) ).

In any case, keep up the great work, and good luck with all these cool
projects,

Which summer are you refering to? Northern or southern hemisphere? If
southern hemisphere summer, looking at Dec 2007? If northern hemisphere

Also another thing, if one buys the PDF, can one print a few pages, so
one can work on the OSG projects when away from electronic equipment,
