Re: [ozmidwifery] Gloria Lemay
Hi Rochelle: I went to the Midwifery Today site but couldn't find the article in question on Gloria Lemay. I am familiar with her reputation as I have recently returned from the United States after living there for some 24 yrs. Gloria is one of the icons of North American home birth midwifery. This however does not mean she is without blemish neither does it mean she is blemished. Since I couldn't access the article, I don't know what she is accused of. What I do know is that Gloria has publically disagreed with the BC College of Midwives on their midwifery registration requirements. It is only in the last 10 years or so that midwifery has become legal in BC. In the process they have rather intense requirements for registration, some of the midwives who had practiced for years unregistered expected or lobbied to have previously practising midwives grandmothered into registration. This did not happen and many were required to undergo further education or at least supervision by registered midwives. I believe that Gloria was one who disagreed with this. She refused to apply for registration and worked at a birth attendant as it became illegal for her to call herself a midwife under BC law. I have read many article swritten by her that seemed pretty amazing to me. However since I couldn't access the article I can't comment any further. Also, all listers please note this is just my personal recollection of Gloria Lemay's situation in BC Canada. marilyn - Original Message - From: Timothy Haughan To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, August 17, 2002 9:20 PM Subject: [ozmidwifery] Gloria Lemay Dear List, I am a Mum to a happy, healthy 17 month baby girl. We had a wonderful natural birth experience in a regional hospital with an Obstetrician whom I hold in high regard; he was patient, respectful and receptive to our detailed birth plan. We also had our fantastic and very knowledgeable CBE present whosupported me like some kind of Earth Angel throughout the entire birth process and the ensuing weeks. In fact, it is she who inspired me to pursue a life serving women as a CBE and possibly a midwife. Recently, I was surfing the net and was amazed at the incredible reserve of information devoted to Midwifery. One particular site caught my eye - www.midwiferytoday.com I am seeking input in relation to one particular post on this site pertaining to the Gloria Lemay case. Apparently, Gloria, a Canadian midwife, is serving a prison sentence as a reseult of legal action initiated by the British Columbian College of Midwives. Representatives of this college alleged that Gloria had been negligent while assisting in a number of births. Apparently her demise, resulting in her imprisonment, was largely the result of one particular case - this case being the subject of this email. This post was written by Marc Ramsden, the partner of the plaintiff. Marc gives his account of the events leading up to, and during, the birth of their baby son. Based on his version of events, one finds it difficult to reserve any sympathy for Gloria Lemay's cause. I think thatGloria's actions, if what Marc says is accurate, constitute gross misconduct and negligence. Butdespite thehorrorof the events described, I cannot help feeling perplexed. Further investigation of this case, via other web sites, reveals a significant level of support for Gloria Lemay. It is explained that Gloria has caught over 1000 babies (in a career spanning approx 20 years)and that many of her past clients have been more than happy with her services. Further, I learnt that Lemay has alarge following worldwide within the midwifery movement. How then, cansuch a highly respected and experienced proponent of midwifery be accused of acts that are so obviously negligent. Are the facts presented by MarcRamseden inaccurate? Did Gloria burn out and thereforeactout of character? Or is this a witch hunt? How is Gloria Lemay perceived in Australian birth circles? Please read the post in question at theaforementioned site; go to All Forums, then Legal Battles and Birth Politics, then go to Midwife Gloria Lemay's Legal Battles, and finally the entry by Marc (7:17, 16th August) on page 3. I will appreciate any further input on this issue. Thankyou Rochelle
Re: [ozmidwifery] story help
Dear Michelle, As a faithful listener to the J's, particularly the morning show, I have often thought about the number of stories that are relevant to young women particularly those having children. I regularly offer the placenta to the parents after birth, most don't wish to take it home and those who do say that they are going to plant a tree on it or something similar. It is a shame that more people don't recognise the amazing job that it does, just ask Dr Karl! Have you asked Francis what they did with theirs? Apart from placentas, there are many other great stories, There is a community based midwifery program over that way which is a great model for what all australian women deserve. When you compare New Zealands system to our maternity care, we are in the dark ages. There is a National Maternity Action Plan that is available on the web which addresses these issues. Another interesting topic is the role/benefits of midwifery care. Countries such as Holland have outstanding maternal and infant mortality and morbidity statistics as they have midwives as primary care givers. Countries which are just as well off such as Australia and America where Dr's are the primary care givers, don't have the same rates of favourable outcomes. Breastfeeding benefits, how it is undermined by media and big companies such as Nestle is also interesting. People think that bottlefeeding is just as good but health wise there is just no match for breastfeeding. Big companies such as Nestle love third world countries where they can advertise formulas and con people into thinking that bottle feeding is as good as Mc Donalds and Coca Cola. Then the babies get dysentry from the poor water supply etc etc, And don't get me started on the Phytoestrogens in the Soya based formula's Anyway if you are ever short on story ideas just let us know, and please tell us when the placenta story is on Thanks Megan [EMAIL PROTECTED] 16/08/2002 11:32:25 am Hello, My name is Michelle White. I'm a journo with Triple J's Morning Show. I'm hoping someone on this website might be able to help me out with a story I'm doing. I'm really interested in doing a piece about parents who choose to eat the placenta after they've given birth. I've heard lots of anecdotal stories about how it's supposed to prevent post natal depression and how it's common amongst certain cultures, but am having trouble finding someone who has actually done it. I'm also wondering if there's someone out there who is an 'expert' on the subject ? Any help would be greatly appreciated ! Warm Regards. Michelle. [ozmidwifery] C/S Rates
Dear all, Is there any way in which a state's Private Hospitals Caesarean Section rate can be accessed legitimately. I recall that Marsden Wagner's visit in the 90's caused a stir because he was able to access this information and report it. Has this changed in any way? How did he get this information? I noticed Mary Murphy's posting and was shocked by the 12% increase in C/S rates in one year. Also is there any way to access the total % of people taking up private insurance within individual states from one year to the next? Re: [ozmidwifery] Hypnobirthing / slogan
Dear all : The discussion about hypnosis and labour is interesting. I think it is so important that women feel that they have everything they need to take the journey through birth, without needing outside 'help'. I am just concerned about the emphasis on labour being pain-free, and thereby the association that experiencing pain in labour is a failure. (I am not suggesting that you are inferring this, Tracey). I have not been in on the slogan debate, and maybe it is over - but I would like to ask that we maybe steer clear of the "push" word. For women it evokes the breathe-hold-push your eyeballs out kind of thing they see on the telly - and I guess the slogan is being aimed at everyone. Instead maybe, 'opening the way to birth reform'. Just ideas, Jen Watkins. - Original Message - From: Tracey Askew To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, July 14, 2002 11:08 AM Subject: RE: [ozmidwifery] Hypnobirthing I work with a women who teaches the technique to women and their partners, and has had mixed success. When it works, it is incredible to see how effortless labour can be and has succeeded in preventing interference on many occasions, when the onlookers think that labour has stopped when in fact it is progressing beautifully. In its purest form, some practitioners say that it can be used with anyone but it requires asolid belief and an ability to let go of the fear of labour. External coaching seems to be important for most people, to access that very deep state of relaxation. It tells us alot about the power of breathing and relaxation, but I think unfortunately the fear factor gets in the way and I wonder if there needs to be more emotional work done prior to labour. None the less, it is worth looking into and would be a worthwhile skill for any midwife. My third birth was pain free, as I (unknowlingly) placed myself in a hypnotic state, and next thing I was pushing. It was incredible. Re: [ozmidwifery] Further to C/Section
Title: Re: [ozmidwifery] Further to C/Section Mary our womens hospital, being WA? I would be interested in the stats In solidarity Justine Caines I have been reading the latest stats for our womens hospital and find the figures alarming. In the public sector (lots of high risk) the figures for last year, C/S are about 26% and instrumental and induction are high but understandable to some degree. What alarms me is that in the private sector of that same hospital (same wards, midwives, doctors) the c/s rate was well over 50% last year and for this year to date is 62%. Now, if the government is encouraging families to take out private insurance then this risk factor for complicated birth will sure do more harm than good to the budget? not to say- the women? Maybe the Pollies aren't aware of this fact? MM

Re: [ozmidwifery] What happened to??
Hi Denise, I completed my Midwifery course last year and had the pleasure of being present when one of the midwives from this Centre came to speak with us. She said that they had to close because their obstetrician was in his 70s and had to retire. The Centre was not allowed to remain open without an obstetrician on hand who supported them. They could find NO ONE who would stand in for them. The old ob apparently was fantastic... he supported the idea of midwifery led care, and stayed upstairs, out of the way unless he was called. It sounded like such a wonderful way to havea baby :( Jo - Original Message - From: Denise Hynd To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 19, 2002 12:55 AM Subject: [ozmidwifery] What happened to??
