NEW VERSION OF FLAC

2004-10-12 Thread Dane Trethowan

Hello Everyone!
Well I'm very pleased to say that the new version of FLAC now
available has some major bug fixes. Firstly (and this will be
noticible to those of you who use Winamp with the FLAC plug-in) the
error that Winamp and the Winamp FLAC decoder produced whilst
scanning through a FLAC file has now been fixed so that's a big plus.
Second, the importation of a cue sheet into a FLAC file now works,
thus the cue sheet can be exported from the FLAC file along with the
Wave file which is a result of the decoding of the FLAC file, great
stuff! for those of us who use EAC etc.
Extra support now comes with FLAC to enable it to work with Nero.
A Windows GUI front end is included as standard with this new version
along with the usual console 32-bit command line version so take your
pick, the front end interface is very accessible.
It would appear that all console commands and switches are available
through the Windows front end. The installer and Windows front end
are compatible with Windows 95 and up.

Find the menu key and then get sighted help because menus for DVDs aren't
standard. You'll have to memorize the menus for the dvd you want to watch.

Re: Organizing lots of music

2004-10-12 Thread mimi
Hello, Wayne,

I make folders for the overflow and move
the songs into the new folders. In my
case, where I burn CD's after encoding a
folder of 200 songs or less, (I watch
the amount I put onto a disc closely
now) I have folders with oldies and
separate folders for folk music.
Sometimes, I will make a mixed folder of
mp3's of folk, country classics and
oldies and burn those onto a CD.
Sometimes, I focus on several artist or
groups and put them together. There are
many ways of organizing the music. My
drive is only 18.6 gb, so I have to
periodically clean off a lot of stuff.
So, now, any time I complete a new
folder of music small enough to burn
onto a disc, I burn it while it's still
fresh. I have to rotate my music often.

Mimi

Greetings. I'm curious how people that
have more than 500 songs, organize
their music? I have nearly 650 songs,
and though its kind of fun having them
all in one directory and alphabetized,
it does seem a little time consuming
if I'm looking for a particular one.
For instance, do you organize by
 artist, album, genre, or other
methods?

 Many thanks,

Hi,
I put all my songs in subfolders of my mzk folder. I have ct for
country, fk for folk, rk for rock, etc. If I have several albums by a
particular artist, they're put in a further subfolder below the genre
level. But, don't forget the windows search feature to find your sog
fairly instantaneously. Navigate to your folder, then press alt f when it
is selected. Arrow down to search, type in a word or two of the title, and
voila!

That's with windows xp. Hope you're using that os.

DVD's hold more then CD's. They are the same physical size. Some car
stereo's and home stereo's can play DVD's some can not. You can get about 7
times as many MP3's onto a dvd as you can onto a CD.

That is why someone would want to put MP3'S on a DVD.
But then aren't you limited to playing this in a DVD player? You wouldn't be
able to play this in the car or the home stereo right?

Most people that I know of don't have much luck with M-Audio / Delta
cards working with software speech. Maybe it's got something to do with the

generating it.
I'm quite confident in saying that most people who have tried this
would recommend that an inexpensive card like a Sound Blaster be used for
software speech while the Delta or whatever else high end audio card be used
for audio applications.

Hi, everybody.
I like making compilation CD's of songs from various artists and average
about 16 to 17 songs per Audio CD. I also prefer dot wav files, as they
don't sound canned like MP3 files. Could I put a big pile of songs onto a
DVD? Do I require any special hardware or software? Will the finished
product play in a home stereo CD player?

Nero users, has this ever happened 2 U?

2004-10-12 Thread Lou Novath
Hi, everybody.
As prologue to buying Nero 6 Ultra, I have downloaded and installed the demo onto
my computer. Installation was uneventful and I can open already existing dot wav
files and edit them and even save what I've changed. However, when I try to record,
Nero pops up the error message, cannot open record module. I have already
uninstalled
Nero and downloaded and installed a new set of demo installation files. I had
uninstalled
Spy Sweeper, thinking maybe that was fouling something up. By the way, this is Windows
XP SP2, Window-Eyes SP4, HP Pavilion computer with 512 mb RAM, 40 gig HD, 1.9 gig
processor, Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 sound card. Computer is clean, no viruses or
spyware. Only thing I haven't done--and
I certainly hope Ahead software is not serious about this--is to uninstall any other
sound editors that are currently and reliably working on my computer. Any ideas?
Suggestions? Hammers and crow bars are out of the question!! Lol!
Best, and thanks for any help,

Re: putting mp3's on a dvd

2004-10-12 Thread russell Bourgoin
Hi,
You need a dvd player on your computer to play them. Most new
computers, especially those from dell, come with a combination cd writer
slash dvd player. I bought a recoh drive about three years ago that has
this feature.

Rusty
Do you have to have a DVD burner to use them? I have a CD burner but not a
DVD player or Burner on my computer.
I was thinking since the capacity of the DVD disk is larger that it could be
useful to back up some large folders on to them and remove them from the
computer thus making more space.

Hi,
You should be able to put a big pile of mp3 songs on a cd. Simply
make a data cd and you should fit around a hundred and fifty songs on the
disc. I recently made a friend a bluegrass cd and put 198 songs on it. He
has a car sterio that can play that type of cd. Some sterios play them,
others do not. Many of the portable cd players play mp3 cd's as well as
standard cd's.

Hi, everybody.
I like making compilation CD's of songs from various artists and average
about 16 to 17 songs per Audio CD. I also prefer dot wav files, as they
don't sound canned like MP3 files. Could I put a big pile of songs onto
a DVD? Do I require any special hardware or software? Will the finished
product play in a home stereo CD player?

Hi:
I agree with the previous post listed below in this email. If you have an
OnBoard sound chip in your computer, that usually will do just fine for
computer speech output. Other programs besides computer speech output can be
a problem for the Delta sound cards such as Windows Messenger; although MSN
Messenger seems to do much better.

Cheers.

Most people that I know of don't have much luck with M-Audio / Delta
cards working with software speech. Maybe it's got something to do with
the
card's processing the information so much faster than the screen reader is
generating it.
I'm quite confident in saying that most people who have tried this
would recommend that an inexpensive card like a Sound Blaster be used for
software speech while the Delta or whatever else high end audio card be
used
for audio applications.

2004-10-12 Thread Mary Ellen Earls
Hi!
I'm Mary ellen Earls from Cincinnati, Ohio and I have been on this list only
a few days. I have been reading with interest the comments left by the
listers concerning cd/dvd burners and sound cards.
I have a cd/dvd burner on an IBM T-30 laptop computer and just installed on
saturday an Indigo IO pcmcia sound card. The sound card is absolutely
excellent with no popping or crackling and the sterio music is absolutely
wonderful.
As far as cds go, well I had Nero on my old desktop computer and never could
get it to work so when I got this IBM, it came with its own cd/dvd program
which is absolutely excellent.
Now I do have a question not related to either of these threads so I'll stop
here and send a second message with that particular question.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Mary Ellen,
I've never heard of that particular synthesizer, but it sounds like the cd
with the booklet, may be a user's manual.
Are you familiar with how to explore a cd using windows explorer?
If so, pop it in and check it out.

Re: question regarding mp3 clip

2004-10-12 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Marty.

Not quite sure about your question but I've pasted some notes here on using
MP3CLIP with Winamp that hopefully may be of some use to you or other list
members.

Using MP3CLIP to split an MP3 file

1.. Start the track you wish to split in Winamp
2.. Pause the track at the point you would like to split the file by
pressing C
  3.. Start MP3CLIP
4.. Tab to the load button and press enter to open the source file
dialogue
5.. Use the combo boxes to locate the MP3 file you wish to split in the
same way you'd locate a document in Microsoft Word for example
6.. Tab to the open button and press enter; the source file is now loaded
7.. You will now be returned back to the main dialogue; tab to the set
button and press enter to open the dialogue
8.. Enter the file name you would like the resulting files to be prefixed
with. For example, if you enter the name Fred then the file before the
split will be called Fred0 and the file following the split will be called
Fred1
9.. Press enter to confirm the file names you chose
10.. You will again be returned back to the main dialogue
11.. Tab to the grab winamp time button and press enter
12.. Now tab until you reach the add time button; press enter to add the
time that's just been grabbed from winamp
13.. Tab to the start button and press enter
14.. Press enter to start the split process
15.. In a few seconds time you will have two files split from the original
file based on the pause you set in winamp

Hi all, I split a file according to the directions from the jfw lite
page, and found there were 3 files, not 2, the first being a .mp3 file
with 0kb in size, so how can I split an mp3 where there's just the
smaller, and larger files, and, is it necessary to put a 0 in the edit
box for the track list as she indicates. Thanks for any assistance you

  Hi,
You should be able to put a big pile of mp3 songs on a cd.
  Simply
make a data cd and you should fit around a hundred and fifty songs
 on the
disc. I recently made a friend a bluegrass cd and put 198 songs
 on it.
He has a car sterio that can play that type of cd. Some sterios
 play
them, others do not. Many of the portable cd players play mp3
 cd's as
  well as standard cd's.

  Rusty

 Hi, everybody.

I like making compilation CD's of songs from various artists and
 average
about 16 to 17 songs per Audio CD. I also prefer dot wav files,
 as they
don't sound canned like MP3 files. Could I put a big pile of
 songs onto
a DVD? Do I require any special hardware or software? Will the
 finished
product play in a home stereo CD player?

Do you have to have a DVD burner to use them? I have a CD burner

 a

I was thinking since the capacity of the DVD disk is larger that
 it could
 be
useful to back up some large folders on to them and remove them
 from the
 computer thus making more space.

Most people that I know of don't have much luck with M-Audio / Delta
cards working with software speech. Maybe it's got something to do with the
card's processing the information so much faster than the screen reader is
generating it.
I'm quite confident in saying that most people who have tried this
would recommend that an inexpensive card like a Sound Blaster be used for
software speech while the Delta or whatever else high end audio card be used
for audio applications.

A dvd can hold 4.5 gig of data, besides its more common use of
movies etc. Hope this explains it.

Re: NEW VERSION OF FLAC

Hi,
Can you give the url to read more and download flack?
Thanks.

I have a folder called Music. Under that I have a folder for each
genre. Within each folder I have the filename for each file as: title,
composer or artist. I have 3,600 songs in my Rock folder. If I have two
songs with the same name as in different artists, versions etc I tack a
 number on the end.

Re: CD Question

That's good to know. If you want to make all the tracks in one cd or album
one continuous file, can you do that with cdex?

Cdex is the ripping program. Nero is
the CD burning program. Why bother with
Cex? Because it has a Record from
Analog Input which comes in handy for me
when I digitize music from different
formats. Nero would not let you do that
because it does not have that feature.

Hi Chris. You can use a program
like CDex to rip audio CD's to the
harddrive, and then, you can use a
program to burn the CD. I believe that
Nero is one of the best for this.

 Hi all,

 I'm somewhat inexperienced and
uninformed about this stuff, and I think
 the
answer to my question is no, but
I'll ask it anyway.

Can you take a standard audio CD
and convert it to mp3 format? If so,
 which
program works best for this? Also
there are a number of different file
extensions but what is the file
extension for a commercially purchased
 audio
 CD?

 With your help, I'll get
up-to-speed on this stuff one of these
days. I
just don't have the time to spend
on it that I would like to have.

 Thanks much.

Re: putting mp3's on a dvd

2004-10-12 Thread russell Bourgoin
Hi Mimi,
Yes, you got it girl! Its really amazing just how large these
storage devices are these days. I'm trying to run a d j type business, and
I've got 30415 songs on my 250 gig hard drive. I also have an external usb
drive that has that amount of storage, so, hopefully, my collection is safe!

Rusty
Rusty, I have a little trouble doing
some of the math on this: OK, my hard
drive is 18.6 gig. That means 18,000
meg. More than that, I know. Is that
correct?
If I got a new computer with an 80 gig
drive than that means 80,000 mb?
