Re: 2 sound card problem

2006-03-30 Thread Bobcat
I messed up and didn't send the whole message so I'm sending this again.

I can't seem to get speech from my default sound card after installing a
second card. I can get speech from the second card, no problem. But, if I
set
the first card as the default, I get no Eloquence nor do I get Narrator.
Sometimes I can get speech from the first card but it is gone the next time
I boot up. What's wrong?
I have checked the windows mixer for both sound cards to be sure levels are
set right and nothing is muted.
XP Media 2005, Jfw7.0, Geforce video.
Original audio, Realtek ac'97. New card. Audigy 4 Pro.

Very unlikely. Distortion is very difficult, if not impossible, to reduce,
because the distortion isn't a distinct and separate part of the sound

Hi. Since you are using mp3 files for your input and output by default
Goldwave may be set to not overwrite existing files. You can do one of
 two things.

 1. Put the output files in a different location than the originals.

 or

 2. Set the radio button to overwrite the original files.

This should work although I personally would put them in a different
directory in case something goes wrong you still have the originals.

 Hello!
I am trying to change volume to a couple of mp3 files in goldwave.
I am using the batch processing utility and hav added all the files which
i would like to change the volume to.
THen i have slected process tab and add effect and then i have selected
to change volume and then double the volume.
Then i press the add button.
THen i press the close butten and then the begin button.
Then a message appears that the files i am trying to process already

Yes i know that they excissts if they don't i'd never had to change the

Re: Creative Labs Sound Cards

2006-03-30 Thread Gary Schindler
Steve, I don't know what the M-audio converters look like. I plan to buy one
some day from Minidisko. the thing cost $49.00. it actually converts the
optical signal to SPDIF. I think what your adapter is used for is to make
the toslink cable compatible with portable minidisk recorders that use
digital optical jacks.

Radio Shack is supposed to have some kind of signal converters to, but I
don't know what they are exactly!

Do you know what the M-Aduio converters look like? I had one that came
with the TOSLINK cable which is like a 3.5 headphone jack type connector
that will go in to the sound card and then the TOSLINK cable will go in
 to this.

 Steve.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 28 March 2006
The toslink digital connectors are optical, while the jack on the
 creative
soundcard is spdif which is an electrical stream. I don't see why one
 of
those M-audio converters wouldn't work. I think that the CO-1 might do
 it.

Thanks to everyone for all their help.

I found an E-mail contact for Creative Labs who advise that there is
 a
basic driver with MS-Windows but they say that I cannot connect up
 my
TOSLINK cable to the digital out.

I have a little converter which came with my TOSLINK cable, I think
that it goes from a 3.5 jack to the TOSLINK connector type, I am not
sure why I can't use this really but am sure that I am missing
 something
 completely.

Hi Kerry. You realise that you can use whatever you want to, if you're
making these ads from home? All you have to do is give the station the
 files
in the format they want, you don't need to use their software if there's
something you're more familiar with. Wav and MP3 files are all the same.

cool edit pro is a very nice sound editing software. if they are
still using cool edit pro, then they are a little out of date, and it
 must be normal for
radio stations to not have the most up-to-date software; all the radio
stations around here are using cool edit pro still. anyways, I dont
 happen

 with
jaws scripts the cool edit pro software is very accessible. you said

Reduce Distortion

On Thu, 30 Mar 2006, Anders Holmberg wrote:

I know this doesn't sounds realistic to some of you but are there any way to
reduce the distortion from such a recording?

Anders, you may already are aware of a very simple solution and that is if
playing back your track using Winamp, control tab to the equalizer window and
reduce the output of your pre-amp with the tab key. Generally I keep this
setting in the mid range--between -1.4 and + 1.4 or thereabouts. However, I
have found that if there is distortion on a recording that often decreasing the
pre-amp setting to a - 7 setting or even less will help lower the distortion.
Of course, reducing distortion with a sound editor program is always the best
solution if possible.

have two similar cards in the same machine or should I just get a
different brand? Since I'm just needing it for basic voice chat, Windows

Hello. Currently I have a Soundmax integrated sound card and a
Soundblaster Audigy PCI internal card. I'm wanting to replace the
Soundmax with another PCI card due to the problems I'm having with the
Soundmax's volume going way low. My question is if there are any
problems in getting a second Soundblaster. Will there be conflicts if I
have two similar cards in the same machine or should I just get a
different brand? Since I'm just needing it for basic voice chat, Windows
sounds, and software speech the replacement sound card need not have a
 lot of bells and whistles.

Re: replacement sound card question

2006-03-30 Thread Brent Harding
My guess would be that most cards will fight with running 2 of the same
type. Since both use the same device driver, the system wouldn't know which
one it's talking to. To make matters worse, the same resources would be
likely assigned to both. I heard some really expensive cards can be run more
than one per machine, but not sure what kind. I thought someone told me they
cost around $700. I would just get another brand, but it has to not use any
of the drivers you already have.

me much good anyways. How can I get the same result done in software once I
get on the job, assuming that most platforms don't support choosing the
sound device you want? If I got some sort of USB headset, can it be set to
do this, as I'm sure the other people that work wherever I end up won't like
hearing on one side only very much? I thought of the external synth idea,
but I'd rather use a software method so that others can hear normally when I
switch it back. Also, it seems my Pac Mate can't be used as an external
synthesizer, and I would probably need something USB that I can't afford.

Re: Panning Jaws and other audio on opposite sides?

2006-03-30 Thread Brent Harding
Ah, what kind definitely work fine using the jfw.ini method of switching
what it uses? If I switch my JFW to my soundmax, it makes speech so delayed,
and winamp takes awhile to start playing through the other card after I hit
the X. I know on FS's site, they are vague in saying some systems won't work
with the configuration, but wonder what about my system makes this not fly?
I'm almost certain that I must make Jaws use something that isn't default.
Where would I even get the headset with 2 plugs if I could get some way of
running 2 cards working?

2006-03-30 Thread Byron Stephens
Any other make of card will do for a jaws only card, just as long as it's
not using the same drivers like someone said a few messages back. That would
happen if you got two of the same brand. You wouldn't have the conflict
problem if you used another brand name like yamaha or what ever elce is out
there for soundcard brands. Also windows xp should recognise what ever card
you would end up using as a jfw card. But that would be a problem if you
were using win9x, then you would need the cd that's included with the card
being installed. Hope that helps!

I think using a small mixer would probably be a better solution than
chopping the stereo plug off of a pair of phones and putting 2 mono ones on.
This way, I can put it back to normal so others using the station I use at
other times of the day can hear through both ears when I put the computer
channel in the middle.

My other idea would be some sort of automatic A/B switch similar to what
they do in taverns to have the jukebox override the radio, but in my case,
the dictation overriding JFW. I think panning with a small mixer sounds
cheaper and easier as long as one could get something compact enough. This
is because as far as the info I gathered goes, automatic switches would need
some sort of external relay to make them act, not just based on the audio
signal.

Oh, I always wondered why Jaws doesn't like being on the internal one when
windows default is the other one. Jaws just might not communicate well with
the Soundmax driver. Maybe an Imic USB for Jaws if I could set it to not

soundforge's pitch sifting does sound a bit better and works more quickly.
I don't think you'll ever find anything perfect because of the way that the
pitch is being shifted.

What is it about Gold Wave's pitch shifting that you don't like? It's
always best to be specific so we don't recommend another program that does
exactly the same thing that annoys you about this one. I also wonder what
they could do differently as Gold Wave's pitch shifting seems
straightforward and fine enough for me.

A question about recording from the internetq

2006-03-30 Thread Dennis G. Shulman, Ph.D.

Hello.

I am new to this list.

I wish to record some MP3 files off the internet using Goldwave.

I have a conexant amc audio card.

While I can record using a microphone, I cannot figure out how to record
what I hear. That doesn't seem to be an option under properties under Window
volume.

Is there a way to do this using the sound card I have?

Thanks,

Dennis Shulman
