Problem with Goldwave

2006-06-08 Thread Samuel Wilkins
Hello, I am having a problem with Goldwave. When I use goldwave for a bit, when
I try to play a file, it says access violation at address bla bla bla so and so
forth. Then I have to use the task manager to close it down. When I exit it
quickly after the error, goldwave still stays running but it is hidden and I
can't shut it down except when I shut the computer down. What is happening?

Re: sound forge 8.0 help needed

2006-06-08 Thread Jerry Richer
Chris! The Sound Forge demo did apparently make itself the default
player for Wave and MP3 files. Sony has confirmed that this is possible.
This didn't happen to me when I installed Sound Forge 8 but there are so
many options who knows what could happen on a given computer.

RE: Scheduling with Total Recorder

2006-06-08 Thread Dean Martineau
Replay a/v records silently, so one doesn't even know it is
happening. It can do this with streams of any streaming type. Total
Recorder can only do this with mp3 streams, and even then it is using
the sound card. The latest version of Total Recorder has added the
ability to record multiple streams, which was formerly not possible,
but I love the silent background recording of the streams without
recourse to the sound card.

Rick. You wouldn't think it would matter weather it is an Audigy 2 or 4 so
I wonder what else causes this iritating problem.

I hope yours continues to work after updating Creative drivers. Mine was
working fine. It didn't work when I first put the Audigy in the computer.
It seems like a few driver updates fixed the problem for a while but I was
never quite sure what did the trick.

Subject: Hp and Creative DO NOT support two sound cards

I recently was told by Hp support that they do not support two sound
cards.
I don't have official email about this but was told by a support
 supervisor
that they can not help me if I want to use a second audio card at the
 same
 time.

Today, Creative support emailed me and also told me Creative does not
 support two sound cards.

Neither company has given me a reason why they do not support two sound
cards or how one device can cause the other not to work properly.

It seems Creative can not help me with any problems I might have running
 the
other card even if it is caused by updating their drivers.

Creative support told me to update the drivers to fix another problem.
 Now
I've lost the ability to use the first sound card (Realtek AC'97) for
 speech
 and system sounds again.

Needless to say, I will be ditching the Audigy 4 Pro even though it has
 so
many great features and does sound good. I will probably buy a USB sound
device to use for speech or even get a serial port adaptor so I can run
 my
LiteTalk on this computer. I know many people have run down Creative
 sound
cards on this list before but they never really gave good reasons so I
didn't pay much attention. Now I wish I had.

I will never buy another HP product. I advise any blind people not to
 buy
HP computers if they wish to run more than one sound card.

Hi Norma and N track users,

I'm curious to know how you access this program. I do not find it

perhaps I should be using window eyes. If you or anyone would like to
write a little blurb about how you use it, on or off list, I for one

Court decision re satellite tv distant channels

2006-06-08 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Hello,

Sorry for the vague subject line. When I called Dish Network to
check my account, I found a recorded message which indicated some
sort of a court ruling regarding persons qualified to receive
distant network channels, channels not originating in their home
area. I could not determine the substance; but the tone of the
message certainly indicated that the ruling was adverse to the
interests of those of us receiving distant channels.

If someone here has any substantive information about this, I
would appreciate knowing it. Thanks in advance.

Don Roberts

Re: ripping CD's with windows media player

2006-06-08 Thread Tyler Wood
Winamp gets my vote simply because for some things it beats WMP. I don't
want to argue or anything, but winamp has time markers, good for the avid
reader. It also is easier to navigate in the library. It could just be me
but jaws is saying in wmp treeview, closed instead of treeview album etc
etc. But winamp can't go by album and artist, but that doesn't matter since
I usually make playlists in WMP. On the other hand, if you meant ripping,
WMP does a supirior job, besides from CDEX or exact audio copy or any
program deticated to ripping.

Not only is it a windows media audio format, but it's also the best format
 by a mile.

Heere is my 2 cents. Considering windows media player 10 works really
 well
with jaws and I wouldn't mind betting that it also works with window eyes
and any other half decent screen reader, then wmp 10 gets my vote and so
 does the wma format mentioned.

 Hi Mari.

Not a stupid question at all - the myriad of formats are definitely
confusing until you get more acquainted with digital music.

Basically, lossless means that nothing has been taken away from the
 music
during compression. So, all of your high and low frequencies are left
intact and therefore the quality of the source music is preserved.

The opposite of lossless is known as lossy. This covers formats like
 MP3
and WMA files ripped at lower bit rates. With lossy compression, some
 of
the high and low frequencies are lost to compress the music down into
 the
smallest space possible. There are also a number of psycho-acoustic
techniques used to remove parts of the music that is deemed will not
 be
missed by the listener such as quieter sounds that happen to be
 playing
whilst there is a louder sound almost obscuring it. All formats have
 their
own proprietary algorithms that dictate how the music is processed and
that's why it's never a good idea to convert from one lossy format to
 another.

Lossless files take up a lot more disc space than lossy formats and so
 it's
worth bearing this in mind when deciding on what format to use.

 Regards.

 hi tyler
i highly doubt real networks will switch to something like winamp, i just
 can't see it.
the paid version of winamp burns at 48x, but this is only useful if you
 have
a burner that supports burning that fast. not many burners that come with
pc's do, and most of the lower end externals or mountables do either. my
laptop only burns at 16x i think, possibly 24 and the one i installed on
 the
98 machine does 16, and we paid pretty good money for it.

really? tell me, friend, is it free to burn mp3 cds? no. And, no again, you
can't make mp3 conversions in what I'm talking about. Real player saves its
library in some unknown directory to start with, and it saves from a cd in
.rm or some such format. I don't see an mp3 conversion hear, anyway. Unless
you pay for it, probably.

I think its stupid that real player doesn't allow .mp3 conversion, but
 that
is about the only setback I can see, although you have to pay for some
things which is even more of a drag. I stil like winamp, though, but I use
meedia player for leasure music listening since its real easy to make

There's plenty of references to using OGG plug-ins in media player - just

will never be supported widely by portable devices and is a pain to

  However,
 I
don't think it gets much easier to rip a CD than placing a CD in the

and having it automatically ejected less than 2 minutes later having
 been
ripped to the format of your choice which once set as your default
  will
stick. You're free to do as much or as little with your computer

media player is ripping too. I personally ripped with CDEX for years
 but
was converted over to media player due to CDEX's lack of support for
  modern

 I
haven't regretted it. Also bear in mind that the free version of CDEX
 is
ancient now and the current version is not free unlike media player
  10.

As far as playback goes, try playing a concept album where the tracks
 run
into each other or a live album in both winamp and media player 10.
  You'll
see that media player wins hands down in providing a seemless
  listening
experience. As for quality, it's very subjective but I do think that
  media

 modern
formats and, in particular, the format I use most often, lossless WMA.
 I
haven't regretted it. Also bear in mind that the free version of CDEX
 is
ancient now and the current version is not free unlike media player
 10.

As far as playback goes, try playing a concept album where the tracks
 run
into each other or a live album in both winamp and media player 10.
 You'll
see that media player wins hands down in providing a seemless
 listening
experience. As for quality, it's very subjective but I do think that
 media
player does a better job with WMA than winamp. I suppose that's not a
surprise given it's a microsoft player playing a microsoft format?

 Regards.

 hi,
here's my thoughts on the subject.

windows media player isn't nearly the best choice for cd ripping. you
 can
 go
out and download a free program such as CDEX which is much easier to
 use,
 is
focused on ripping and allows you to convert into mp3 much easier
 than
windows media, as well as having more ripping modes if those cd's are
scratched. to get it, or even just check it out, go to
 http://www.whitestick.co.uk/download.html
if you don't like it, you can remove it, but i personally use it for
 ripping
as well as converting between different formats.

as for playing music, I know a lot of blind people use winamp. it's
 totally
scripted, and doesn't have a bunch of garbage that you don't need.
 it's
 all
keyboard controled and easy. it rips cd's as well, and is also a good
 method
despite being a bit slower. on my pc, it still ripped a cd in 10
 minutes
with little processor eating up, so i could do other stuff while
 ripping.
winamp allows you to burn cd's as well, and in my opinion is easier
 to
 use
than media player, besides having more internet broadcasting stations
available that media player doesn't have.

the only disadvantage to winamp, and this can be gotten around, is it
doesn't play dvd movies. there are plugins that allow you to do this,
 though.
 winamp can be gotten from
 http://www.winamp.com
 that's about it from me.

I don't have a problem, the problem is I'd rather be able to choose the

I don't know why people have such a problem ripping CD's with Windows Media

The max will show up in Windows Media player as what ever the speed of
 media
was rated the last time you burned a cd. Find out what your drive is
 rated
for and buy the corresponding media. If you are running 98SE or above
 then
the only thing you would need to update is your drive. Do you use nero?
 If
so, run the info tool on your drive.

Have you checked into using an external sound card?
 - Original Message -
 From: Bobcat [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Announcing the official launch of FX Radio!

2006-06-08 Thread Patrick Perdue
What is FX Radio? Well, it's a concept that Derek Lane and I came up with last
summer when we were both rather bored.
Basically, it's the result of what happens when you load three instances of
winamp equipped with crossfaders, then load a whole ton of high quality sound
effects libraries into each winamp, making sure, of course, that everything is
randomized.
The sequence of events that can happen as a result of this are rather strange,
and many interesting things can happen to your mind as a result of listening to
the random combinations of odd things that occur.

Have you ever seen a bird driving a car under water, all the while being shot
at by a telephone? Or, perhaps, little kids playing in underwater construction
sites? How about frogs that make things explode, sheep making things blow up,
or machine guns blasting through a calm cafe, all the while everyone seems to
be oblivious to the fact that they are being shot at, and, in fact, don't seem
to mind very much?
All these things can and have been known to happen on FX Radio, all sound
effects, all the time, 24 hours a day!

To tune in, you will need a streaming media player compatible with AAC+
streaming, such as Winamp (5.1 or higher, except 5.22 which has a bug that
breaks AAC streams), VLC Mediaplayer, or Foobar 2000.

If you have a compatible player, go to one of the following addresses:
shoutcast: http://fx.pdaudio.net:80
icecast: http://tbrn.net:/fx.aac

Note: If you are using the Thompson mp3 pro decoder for Winamp, the shoutcast
stream will not work unless it is disabled. The icecast feed will, however,
since the .aac extention will not be passed off to the mp3 pro decoder.

The bandwidth is low enough such that you can listen with either a dial-up or
broadband connection. Either way, you'll still get the same great quality that
AAC+ streaming provides.

Also, as the shoutcast server is on port 80, this means you can listen to FX
Radio behind any proxy server that only allows access to http, such as
universities and other institutions. Yes, a nice distraction during class might
be good, don't you think?
Why not freak out your friends, classmates or co-workers while you're at it?
Maybe all of the above?

Close your eyes, put on some headphones, tune in, and get ready for a very
strange, and altogether different experience!
It's FX Radio! No, really?

Time Markers in Winamp was Re: ripping CD's with windows media player

2006-06-08 Thread Steve Pattison
Just to clarify something, Winamp definitely doesn't have time
Markers, try using Winamp with Window-eyes and all of your time
markers will instantly disappear (smile). People need to remember
that time markers are a feature of the JAWS scripts for Winamp and
not a feature of Winamp itself.

At 07:36 AM 9/06/2006, you wrote:
Winamp gets my vote simply because for some things it beats WMP. I don't
want to argue or anything, but winamp has time markers, good for the avid
reader. It also is easier to navigate in the library. It could just be me
but jaws is saying in wmp treeview, closed instead of treeview album etc
etc. But winamp can't go by album and artist, but that doesn't matter since
I usually make playlists in WMP. On the other hand, if you meant ripping,
WMP does a supirior job, besides from CDEX or exact audio copy or any
program deticated to ripping.

FW: Times/Delta Article On Independent Voting: 06062006

2006-06-08 Thread Pam Drake
Below is the coverage which appeared in our local newspaper on June 7th
after Dave and I voted independently for the first time the previous
day.

The article and guest commentary appeared as two items; and I have copied
and pasted the text to a single message.

Dave's initial idea was to write a guest commentary on the importance of
this experience to us; and the newspaper staff decided to do a story with

Visually impaired vote on their own

Voting is now one less obstacle David McElroy and Pamela Drake will have to
deal with.
For the first time in their lives, McElroy and Drake, both blind, were able
to vote without assistance from friends or poll workers when they used the
audio option of a touch screen voting machine in Tuesday's election.
The voting machine at their polling station, Community of Christ Church at
2127 S.
Giddings St., allowed them to vote using headphones and a key pad with
Braille and large buttons.
It's extremely liberating, McElroy said. When you can go to the polling
place and cast your own ballot, it contributes to our participation in the
community.
There was a time when I voted not by what I believed, but by what the poll
worker would have wanted, added McElroy, a retired Tulare County social
services employee.
Drake agreed.
I think [the new system] will make me more interested and more motivated to
vote,
she said. It means more when you're actually doing it yourself. ... It has
more of an impact.
Drake lost her sight at 4 months old, and McElroy has been blind his birth.
They've been partners for 13 years.
Both said the new voting machine is the most convenient way they have voted.
Before, we had to go down to the courthouse and get an absentee ballot or
get the help of a friend or the polling place, Drake said.
Kim Shannon, county elections supervisor, said when a person is using the
audio voting option on the machine, the screen will read, audio voting
enabled.
That way people walking behind a blind person won't be able to see who he or
she is voting for.
She added that voters do not have to be blind or have a disability to use
the machine.
One machine was at each of the county's 75 polling stations.
Cheri Olson, a poll volunteer, said using the machine is simple.
It's like playing video games, she said.
McElroy admitted he was more interested in the voting machine than the
actual outcome.
This is a boring election, he said. I wasn't sure I would have come out
to vote if it weren't for that gadget.

this is probably one of the strangest streams I've ever heard. If
you fall asleep with FX Radio on, be prepared to have some very very
 strange dreams indeed.

At 06:04 PM 6/8/2006, you wrote:
What is FX Radio? Well, it's a concept that Derek Lane and I came up
with last summer when we were both rather bored.
Basically, it's the result of what happens when you load three
instances of winamp equipped with crossfaders, then load a whole ton
of high quality sound effects libraries into each winamp, making
sure, of course, that everything is randomized.
The sequence of events that can happen as a result of this are
rather strange, and many interesting things can happen to your mind
as a result of listening to the random combinations of odd things that
occur.

Have you ever seen a bird driving a car under water, all the while
being shot at by a telephone? Or, perhaps, little kids playing in
underwater construction sites? How about frogs that make things
explode, sheep making things blow up, or machine guns blasting
through a calm cafe, all the while everyone seems to be oblivious to
the fact that they are being shot at, and, in fact, don't seem to
mind very much?
All these things can and have been known to happen on FX Radio, all
sound effects, all the time, 24 hours a day!

To tune in, you will need a streaming media player compatible with
AAC+ streaming, such as Winamp (5.1 or higher, except 5.22 which has
a bug that breaks AAC streams), VLC Mediaplayer, or Foobar 2000.

If you have a compatible player, go to one of the following addresses:
shoutcast: http://fx.pdaudio.net:80
icecast: http://tbrn.net:/fx.aac

Note: If you are using the Thompson mp3 pro decoder for Winamp, the
shoutcast stream will not work unless it is disabled. The icecast
feed will, however, since the .aac extention will not be passed off
to the mp3 pro decoder.

The bandwidth is low enough such that you can listen with either a
dial-up or broadband connection. Either way, you'll still get the
same great quality that AAC+ streaming provides.

Also, as the shoutcast server is on port 80, this means you can
listen to FX Radio behind any proxy server that only allows access
to http, such as universities and other institutions. Yes, a nice
distraction during class might be good, don't you think?
Why not freak out your friends, classmates or co-workers while
you're at it? Maybe all of the above?

Close your eyes, put on some headphones, tune in, and get ready for
a very strange, and altogether different experience!
It's FX Radio! No, really?

Re: n-Track Studio v4.2 released

2006-06-08 Thread John Moore
I hate N-Track. I had a horrible experience with it when I tried it.
Absolutely nothing accessible except the volume and panning controls.
Don't even think about trying this program.

Hi Norma and N track users,

I'm curious to know how you access this program. I do not find it

perhaps I should be using window eyes. If you or anyone would like to
write a little blurb about how you use it, on or off list, I for one
 would be most grateful.

Starting from version 4.1.5 n-Track is available in both 32 bit and

 What is n-Track Studio
 ___

n-Track Studio is an audio MIDI multitrack recorder for Windows. A
complete recording studio in your PC: all you need is a soundcard and
some free space on your hard disk to store audio data. The program
supports simultaneous recording from multiple 16 and 24 bit soundcards,
 and
 real-time audio
effects can be applied non-destructively to each track, allowing the
 user to listen
immediately to the result of a change in the parameters of an effect.
Built-in effects include Reverb, Dynamics, Multiband Compression,
 Echo, Pitch Shift,
Chorus Parmetric EQ, Linear Phase EQ Spectrum analyzer.
The program can use third party DirectX and VST plug-ins to process
 in real-time audio
signals in a number of different ways. Effects can also be used to
 process the recorded
signal in real-time so that the computer can act as a multi-effects
device. MIDI tracks can be imported and exported to regular MIDI files,
 and
 edited using
the built in piano-roll based MIDI editing.
When all the tracks have been recorded and all the settings are correct,
all the tracks can be mixed down to a single wave file for recording it
to an audio CD using a CD recorder or for distributing an mp3 version
 through the Internet.

Gold Wave Version 5.14 Is Out

2006-06-08 Thread Bruce Toews
Gold Wave version 5.14 is now out. This looks to be a very minor upgrade.
The changes include:

Added logarithmic axis option for Spectrum visual.
Removed auto-complete on comboboxes.
Improved consistency of tool bar layout when Control window is
  opened and closed.
Added horizontal scroll bar to File Merger list and made window
  resizeable.
Added processing priority to progress window.
Increased Insert Silence time range under Batch Processing.
Added Auto save and Power down system recording options.
Lowered threshold minimums for Auto Trim and Silence Reduction.
Fixed bugs: preset installation, close help, exception on old
computers caused by optimized Ogg Vorbis plug-in, auto cue
names,
reduce average, blank docked level visual, tabbing into frames.

Golden Ear: A great podcatcher

2006-06-08 Thread Michael Lang
I just discovered a great podcatcher, which works like Winamp's
Shoutcast wire, but is easier to use. With Golden Ear, it's very simple
to just listen to podcasts instead of having to download them. The
program is free:
