avi to wav problem
Hey all, Thanks to those of you who pointed me towards the avi to wav conversion program. It's working well, with one odd exception. The wav files that I create from my avi files can be played in windows media player, but apparently not in Winamp. When I open them in Winamp, they immediately stop, and I can't get them started. If I open wmp, the files play without a hitch. Do I need another codec in order to play these files? It doesn't make sense though, considering that these are simply wav files. Anyhow, if you've got any ideas, I'm open to any and all. I don't know if Media Monkey is accessible with JAWS or any other screen reader but the people who wrote Media Monkey do show some awareness of visually impaired users. Here are two items from the list of new features of various versions of Media Monkey: - Fixed Rip CD dialog not friendly for the visually impaired - Fixed themed radio buttons/checkboxes for visually impaired users Of course this doesn't mean that all parts of Media Monkey are accessible but it does show some awareness of the needs of blind and visually impaired people. Re: Windows Media Audio
When I ripped my CDs to FLAC, and tried playing the FLAC files with Winamp, in real time, I got horrible sound quality. It was suggested that my CPU just wasn't fast enough to uncompress the files on the fly AND deliver good sound. I never tried this with WMA lossless, and don't know if the results would be any different. But just thought I'd report that, for anyone else who might want to try the experiment. - Original Message - From: Bruce Toews [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Tuesday, July 04, 2006 11:26 AM Subject: RE: Windows Media Audio Does WMA Lossless ahve any advantage over FLAC or vice versa? i did it!
hey all, I fixed kurzweil. no need for any other mp3 programs, I managed to fix it, and it's now happily creating mp3 files at my preferred speed of reading and separating them into chunks. I had to modify the file creation cue. It didn't like the third mp3 file of one particular book for some reason, so I had to shift some lines between files, but I did it right with no help from tech support and it didn't require a restart. Thanks to all who've helped me on this list with the very frustrating problem. l8r Brandon Hicks Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: callto://reyuth msn: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. Re: Burning DVD music files
I burned my first CD this afternoon and thought I was going to have problems as the burn option was disabled, I found out, it was because it wanted to know if I wanted to use my cd writer or dvd writer, I have one of each and so it needed to know, once I'd chosen it was fine. I'm no expert but I'm guessing that i could have burned the mp3 music tracks on to a dvd just the same as everything else was in place. Re: Burning DVD music files
hi You can't actually burn them to a DVD and expect to play them unless you're playing them in a DVD capable unit. Because they're physically designed differently than CD's, CD players can't read them at all, even if you just put MP3 files on them. Most players won't even recognize a DVD is in the drive. Re: Windows Media Audio
Hi Bruce. The obvious advantages are: WMA is supported by many players and is probably the next most supported format to MP3 WMA supports ID3 tags and so is supported by many software music databases for managing music collections WMA can be burned directly to audio CD's because most burning software programs support direct conversion from WMA to CDDA - I'm not aware of any that will do this for Flak WMA sounds damn good - there has been some subjective discussion here on the comparison between MP3 and WMA, some of which seems very anti-Microsoft based tripe rather than objective considerations and evidence based. The fact is that MP3 is the oldest encoding technology around and lacks the recent development that's been put into more modern encoders such as WMA. It's true that DRM is a driver for music sites to adopt WMA but you can't sell crap quality music so it would not make sense for the industry to adopt a technology that wasn't going to provide the best quality for the best file size. I've personally done much testing over the past 5 to 6 years and have switched from MP3 to WMA based on the evidence of playback on my computer, on my portable player and on my Linn hi-fi. It was painful to rip my collection all over but I can tell you that the difference in quality is absolutely apparent and that pain has been rewarded. Regards. Re: Windows Media Audio
I don't have an anti-MicroSoft bias, I just hate Windows Media. I use OGG Vorbis where possible, which my Victor Classic Plus will play, and my only portable player is my Book Port which doesn't support Windows Media. I use FLAC for storage purposes only, so it doesn't matter if a portable unit can decode it or not, and again, my portable can't play Windows Media anyway. Every experience I've had with Windows Media has resulted in a slightly warbly sound with a rather penetrating high end. These are just my personal experiences, and maybe things have improved since I had said experiences. Hi Brandon. Those of us that have used both MP3 and WMA exhaustively would definitely disagree with this statement. MP3 is an ancient technology that is widespread because of it's maturity and because of it's compatibility - not for it's quality. I'd suggest you do some experimentation and see for yourself how good WMA is compared to MP3. Regards. Hi Bruce. I've never used Flak so can't give a comparison as such but comparing WMA lossless to WAV, typically the WAV file will be encoded at around 1,300kbps whereas the WMA lossless will typically have been compressed to around 900kpbs with no change to sound quality obviously. As an example, Bruce Springsteen's Born In The U.S.A. is approximately 31 Meg in size when encoded in WMA lossless for the 4 and a half minutes track duration. The same file ripped at 320kbps in MP3 is 11 meg in size as a comparison and I'd expect the WAV file to be around 35 to 40 meg. Regards. A skype out problem
Hello, As I got no response when I posted this to the Skype list, I thought I would try here. I have no difficulty dialing or connecting to phone numbers using Skype Out. This is the service where one can make phone calls to conventional phone numbers. The problem I am having is that the sound quality of the mike has far too much bass and no trebel. Using the same mike and an identical set up, the audio quality is beautiful when calling another Skype user; that is, computer to computer rather than via a phone line. I don't know if this has anything to do with filtering since phone lines limit the modulating frequencies to about 4000 cycles. I am not using any kind of equalizer. I would be most interested to hear whether others have experienced this with Skype Out; and, if so, how did you resolve the issue. Thanks in advance. Re: Windows Media Audio
Well yay for being young. I too could probably tell someone the difference between a 192K and a 320K file. Also a note, for those people who do have say WMA files, I hope you aren't say going into GoldWave and converting them into MP3 discs. This is called cross-coding. For those who don't have acute hering, this is not a great problem. However, cross-coding introduces things called artifacts into the recording quality. Say for example when you download mp3 clips off the internet and you hear that sort of twinkle in the background. That is sometimes due to cross coding but most of the time in that situation it is due to low bitrates. That is one of a few examples I could give of cross-coding. The only situation where you should be converting files is from a .wav file to a compressed file (IE. .mp3 .ogg .aac, etc.). As the .wav file is not compressed and is the original audio of everything being at a bitrate of 1403K (this usually being on CD's). - Original Message - From: Richard Claypool [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2006 2:27 AM Subject: Re: Windows Media Audio When I was younger I could hear the dif between 192 and 360, but after my axident my hearing's shot. Well, I personallly am not completely against the WMA file format, however, in gards to file storage, I prefer personally to use ogg vorbis as its quality management is at a higher and superior way than Microsofts method in the Windows Media Audio files. I would never use FLAC myself and haven't touched it. But, in the other instance of streaming, AAC+ is my choice of an interesting encoder. I wouldn't use it all the time mind you, but it is quite good in its regard of quality management at low bitrates. - Original Message - From: Bruce Toews [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2006 5:52 AM Subject: Re: Windows Media Audio I don't have an anti-MicroSoft bias, I just hate Windows Media. Playing time of MP3
Hello, Is there a chart of any nature that will tell me the playing time of the many MP3 files that I have on my computer? What I am after is, when I go into the properties of a file it says , as an example, 22.1MB How long of a playing time is there for a MB of, or how long for 10MB? Hope this makes sense. There is no definite time to each file-size. However, it should tell you in the properties under the summary tab the duration of the file. Re: making music CD's
Hey, Andre! I've been going through some older emails and just happened to think: If allofmp3 Exploerer can no longer be gotten on the allofm3 site, I wonder if you can just install alltunes and use it like allofmp3 explorer? Could youjust go to the menu of alltunes and find the allofmp3 home page and just download your stuff from there? I never use allofmp3 explorer's features except to get to the allofmp3 Home page, get my tracks from there and let allofmp3 explorer grab the stuff I've ordered. Is that confusing enough? Cheers, Kathy p.s. I'd be glad to let anyone have my allofmp3 3xplorer, too, but I'm just not sure what files to attach when I send it; don't want to mess up anyone's computer! Grin. Re: Playing time of MP3
hi. There is no given length for the time of a specific file based on the file size, because of how it's produced, what bitrate it's at, sampling rate also comes into play, etc. If you use JAWS and Winamp, any version from 2.9 up to the current 5.24, press control insert pluss t and you will be told how long the file is in minutes and seconds. Similarly, if you press alt plus shift plus t, the elapsed time of the currently playing track will be spoken. you can also do this while a track is paused. Finally, to get the remaining time of the track, control plus shift plus t is what you'll want to press. If you don't use JAWS however, you can press control plus j and the jump to time dialogue box will open. You will be told how long the file is and it'll give you the opportunity to jump to a specific point in the file, in minutes and seconds. So if you have a 65 minute long file, and you want to jump 25 minutes and 15 seconds in, press control plus j and then type the following: 25:15 and press enter. and then you should be taken to that point in the file. Hope this helps. At 04:36 PM 7/4/2006, you wrote: Hello, Is there a chart of any nature that will tell me the playing time of the many MP3 files that I have on my computer? SB Live users (attention)
Hi there, I have got a SB Live External 24 bit soundcard here, and I am having some troubles with the line-in. Basically, I have just got my mixer connected to the main line-in and my headphones connected to the main line-out. For some reason, I am getting a chorus effect on my line-in. Which would suggest that for some reason it is picking up two separate feeds at fractionally different times. Which creates this annoying effect. Does anyone know how to either neutralise it or get rid of it completely. I'll reencode audio books from 64 to 32k, but for music I'd not do it. I hesirate to do it even with books, but drivespace is an ishue and it's only spoken audio.
