The key word here is back up everything on another drive. or to go flash.
 Do
you really think that radio stations, for an example have all of their
music, jingles, and commercial content only on one drive? I think not.
Believe me, if it's mechanical it will fail. The question is when? Mind
you, hard drive technology has improved over the years and is more
 reliable,
but as stated earlier in this post it is mechanical, and given time it
 will
crash. Audio tape isn't an exact science either, as it too will break down
over time. . Most of us do not have the technology to preserve the storage
of electronic media in our homes.
I am talking about the storage of materials on magnetic tape. Although
compact discs have proven to be very reliable so far, we have no idea how
long they will last, as they have only been around since the mid 80's.
Personally it is my feeling that flash memory will soon become the
 standard.
There are memory sticks on the market that will hold up to 700 of those
 old
floppies that most of us grew up with, and the price of these sticks is
quite reasonable too at around 15 dollars Canadian when on sale. .. .

The Revox cassette recorder that you are probably looking for is the
 model
 710.
Nakimichi made two professional cassette recorders in the 70's. The
 1000,
and the cheaper 700. I personally have the 700 model. It is a solenoid
machine with three motors with Dolby, echo, and a oscillator for tape
alignment. The thinking here is that there are no two cassettes alike
despite how stringent manufacturing might be. By using the tone for
alignment you could be assured of a perfect recording all of the time. .
 The
700 even comes with a wired remote control. This company also made a
portable 600 model which was very good for field recording.
You may also want to look at Tascam. Tascam is the professional line of
Teac. If I had my druthers and wanted to stick with the audio tape
format I would much rather use R-dat. The problem here is that R-dat is
 used
professionally, and unfortunately did not catch on with the public as
expected. It has been rumoured in the audio file community that CD's are
 now
on the way out in favour of audio being put on flash cards and hard
 drives.
It truly makes sense, as you can now get a 500 GB external hard drive
 for
about 150 bucks. One could virtually have their entire record collection
 on
one portable drive to take anywhere. Most commercial radio stations now
 have
their entire music library on hard drives.

The last thing that you want to do is to amerce your cassette in water.
Make sure that anything that comes in contact with the audio tape is
 clean
such as the tape transport, capstan, pinch roller, and record and
 playback
heads. Once that is done, and the tape still squeeks then you may want
 to
 try the following.
 Tape Baking
When magnetic recording tapes are being stored, moisture is slowly
absorbed by the binder that holds the components of the tape together.
Affected tapes will squeak when played back. The squeaking can be heard
directly from the tape passing over the playback head and other fixed
parts of the player, but is also transmitted electronically through the
playback head. Often the tape will also sound dull and distorted.

If you hear a tape that is squeaking, stop playing the tape
 immediately.
Continuing to play a squeaking tape can cause permanent damage to the
tape, and in some cases damage to the player.

This problem can happen to any tape, but is more common in tapes
manufactured after the mid 1970s in the USA.

The solution to the problem of squeaking tapes is to bake the tapes at
very low temperature in an oven. There are as many different opinions
about optimum temperature and duration of baking as there are audio
 engineers. Certainly,

The Latest on Joint Stereo

I'm back to believing the problem to be with Easy CD-Da Extractor, not
Winamp. I just realized taht the file I thought I had created with Gold
Wave was actually created with Easy CD-Da Extractor. So it does appear
that whenever you extract to any format with Easy CD-Da Extractor, you get
joint stereo, not true stereo.

I filter list messages into a separate folder, not my in-box. I vote against

Re: List Name In Subject Line

2007-05-31 Thread Adrian Spratt
For anyone wondering how to filter messages from a list into a separate
folder, I'm copying instructions from another list. If I weren't rushing
this morning, I'd substitute PC Audio's name for the one in the example, and
I apologize for not doing so. Here goes:

This example will be for making a filter for the jaws users list. It is only
a sample rule to give you the idea how these things are created. Once
you understand the basic concept you'll be able to create other rules for
yourself.

First make a folder named jaws users.
To do so press control shift E, type jaws users, then tab and arrow up to
Local folders, then hit enter.
Press alt T, then R to take you to message rules
Enter on mail.
Tab over to New and press the space bar.
Arrow down until you hear where the subject line contains specific words and
press the space bar.
Tab once to the Actions list. You will hear Move it to the specified
folder.
Again, press the space bar.
Tab once to the rules description dialog and down arrow one time.
You will hear where the subject line contains specific words.
Hit enter.
Type in [jaws_users].
Tab one time to Add and press enter.
Now tab until you hear OK and press enter.

You will be back at the rules description dialog.
Now down arrow two times and you will hear specified.
Hit enter.
Now you will up or down arrow until you hear the name of your folder spoken,
jaws users.
Tab over to Ok and hit enter.
Now tab once and hit the back space till the edit field is empty, give the
Rule a name such as jaws users.
Now tab to ok and hit enter. Tab to apply and enter, enter on the OK button
Then on close, tab to OK and enter.

Re: Revox cassette recorder

2007-05-31 Thread Bob Seed
I guess the rule here is that if it ain't etched in stone it's not
permanent, and even stone will wear down. Archiving audio and video files
for long periods of time have always been an issue. Photographs fade, and
audio tape becomes brittle, and if not properly taken care of will
discinigrate. Apparently audio tape that was made in the mid to late 70's
was inferior to the audio tape that was manufactured in the 60's. Believe it
or not paper audio tape held up rather well over the years. It is hard to
find and is still out there in someone's audio file. There really isn't a
permanent solution. to the safe storage of audio and video files for long
periods of time. I was a music librarian for over 20 years, and could see
the collection that I was responsible for changing before my eyes. Vinyl
records became brittle, Audio tape would bind, and compact discs would also
go through a similar change. If you have a reel to reel tape machine it is
always advised that you store the tape tail out, and in this way you will
avoid the tape sticking when you play it back, as you have to rewind the
tape before playing. How many of us do that?. . . . .

Tascam is the professional line
 of
Teac. If I had my druthers and wanted to stick with the audio tape
format I would much rather use R-dat. The problem here is that R-dat
 is
 used
professionally, and unfortunately did not catch

Hi,

Don't forget the $59 c crane fm transmitter. I have two and
consider them two of my most estute investments. I have a wireless
keyboard, so I can control my computer anywhere in my home or on the
deck. Any radio provides audible feedback, and I have several
stationed around my house. I can read email in bed! I control
xmpcr, winamp playlists, and can sit on the deck with a cup of coffee
and enjoy listening to the new york times. If needed, the c crane
phone number is:
800 522 8863

The transmitter runs on batteries or ac adapter. Batteries last for
a really long time. That means you can take one along with an mp3
player and listen on a car radio! Pretty cool!

RE: Wireless transmitter

2007-05-31 Thread Rick Alfaro
Same here Jonathan. Although I did do the mod, the CCrane transmitter still
does not cover my entire house, never mind going out into the back yard.
Part of the problem may be that we have hurricane glass through out the
house which is comprised of 2 half inch panes with some sort of plastic
material in-between both layers of glass. I think I will be checking out
the 100mw Veronica unit hoping it will do the trick.

HI John,
When you go to their homepage, just hit f for the search box and type in
your inquiry. With that said, once the page loads with options according to
your search, it’s probably easiest to hit the letter h for headings until
you get to the list of music files, artists or whatever. It’s relatively
easy to use, but a bit much to go through until you get through their
format.
You can also search music according to genre, decades, album, artist and
etc…

HTH.

P.S.
All their files once purchased are your’s to do whatever you want and their
all recorded in 320 kbs, which is supposedly cd quality. You can burn,
transfer or whatever how many times you like, and if for whatever reason the
music files are lost, they keep a history of all your music downloaded so
you can reretrieve the tracks.
You don’t have to join to listen to files, but it may be worth to take
advantage of the free trial period. Their files are the easiest to use via
computer and screenreader than any other site I’ve been to, but because they
have such a large selection, mostly independents, it can be a bit much to

 Good morning, Tom.

I filter list messages into a separate folder, not my in-box. I vote
 against
putting the list name in the subject line. It's done on another list, and
 I
often find it distracts me from the real subject. It means I have to keep
filtering the name out of my head when I'm going down a list of messages.

I know that however you resolve this question, it will be a carefully

I guess the rule here is that if it ain't etched in stone it's not
permanent, and even stone will wear down. Archiving audio and video files
for long periods of time have always been an issue. Photographs fade, and
audio tape becomes brittle, and if not properly taken care of will
discinigrate. Apparently audio tape that was made in the mid to late 70's
was inferior to the audio tape that was manufactured in the 60's. Believe
 it
or not paper audio tape held up rather well over the years. It is hard to
find and is still out there in someone's audio file. There really isn't a
permanent solution. to the safe storage of audio and video files for long
periods of time. I was a music librarian for over 20 years, and could see
the collection that I was responsible for changing before my eyes. Vinyl
records became brittle, Audio tape would bind, and compact discs would
 also
go through a similar change. If you have a reel to reel tape machine it is
always advised that you store the tape tail out, and in this way you will
avoid the tape sticking when you play it back, as you have to rewind the
tape before playing. How many of us do that?. . . . . .

Extracting Individual audio tracks

Hey, Guys!

This may be a stupid question, so forgive the stupidity here...

If I wanted to extract a single audio track that is not a vocal, say,
like a guitar lead, so I could replace it with a different guitar lead, is
that possible... yes, this is a commercially produced CD, so the original
split tracks are not available, only the mixed down version is at my
disposal.

Thanks in advance, even though I probably already know the answer...

It is interesting that a couple of list owners have chimed in, on this
subject. Also, what about people's extensive footers, where they advertise
the hell out of whatever it is that they are trying to promote? I think
this is one of those things where it depends on one's level of expertise, on
the computer, as to how one handles E mail, coming and going! Should we ask
the other list owners to delete their tags, before making a decision, on
what to do with this list, which, I may also add, has gone through a couple
of owners, in the last couple of years?

Until we all learn how to filter messages, it is a moot point and those with
that expertise ought to help others, without it, to get to that point, not
just complain about the verbiage! I think the extensive footer verbiage is
more of a problem, as it seems like bill board clutter, which only some of
us can even say that they have ever seen, say, walking down a street!
Adrian Spratt has the right idea, which I, for one, will embrace. This is
not one of those lists, to my way of thinking, where one can definitely say
that one's level of expertise has to be such that a problem of this kind
cannot be overcome, even though it takes a number of messages to get to a
point, where the problem gets solved! Just look at the number of posts, on
the subject, if you want to talk about verbiage! Put it to a vote, Tom!

Mac Norins

Late last year I did have the list name in the subject line

one else noticed or cared I removed it. Personally I like
the list name in the subject line because it makes for easier
filtering. If enough list members want it I'll put it in.

Good for you Ken. That's the only music I have
anything to do with. Starting with the 70's, all of it
is either a poor attempt at remakes or just a bunch of
noise. I started in radio at the age of 14, and have
managed to collect a library of original music, as
well as to meet and get to know many of the artists
through the years.

You don’t have to join to listen to files, but
it may be worth to take advantage of the free

Re: List Name In Subject Line

2007-05-31 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. Having the list name in the subject line is extremely repetative,
and as others have said already, creating a rule or filter in your
e-mail program will set it up so you'll know exactly which list you
are checking. That way, the list name won't *have* to be in the
subject line at all, the filter is the solution for that. I use them,
and they work beautifully. I never have any doubts as to which list I
might be posting to.
and if you do have doubts, simply shift tabbing to the to: field will
tell you which address you are sending the message to. If you educate
yourself about your e-mail program and how to use it, it can really
make life a lot easier. Ok, enough on this subject, back to pc-audio stuff.

Speaking of that, how does one do that? I haven't, frankly, encountered a
way to do that, as I haven't subscribed to a JAWS list, for quite awhile and
that subject has never come up; although it creates a lot of problems!

Do you have a simple way to do this?

You need to remember, list owners, of which I thankfully no longer am one,
are generally doing this voluntarily. There's no money in it, there's just
lots of time, lots of on- and -off-list name-calling and insulting, and so
on. A little bit of self-promotion at the end of messages, which is easily
stopped with the control key, is a small price to pay, given the price
paid by the list owner.

Re: List Name In Subject Line

2007-05-31 Thread Mike Pietruk
Guys and gals

While I personally don't rquire the list name (or a shortened key) in the
subject line, I believe most of you are missing the mainpoint behind it:
it simplifies filtering for those who are less sophisticated in the use of
filtering in their email programming.
That's why I personally support the idea behind subject line tagging as
it aids the general user.
Explain all you want how you can do this and that, and I may agree, but
you will be going over the heads of the basic user.
Think beyound what is good
for you personally and not what can be done as it is now.
The simpler msg sorting is made, the more people will use it.
And the simpler it is made, the more feedback you may get to your
questions as it encourages more folks to participate.
It wouldn't even have to be the entire list name but perhaps a
pa)

or

(pca)

prior to each subject.

The sentiment is pretty obvious -- and I understand it -- but perhaps what
is missing is the notion that the needs of a basic user might be best
served by such tagging even if it is either personally unneeded or
slightly inconvenient.

i don't agree, there are many situations where messages cannot be filtered,
for example from my job computer I can check my personal e-mail just via
web, and if messages do not have the correct subject tag, it's confusing.
Or, most of situations, checking it from my pocket pc
well, I could put a filter also in the e-mail via web, but it's so
complicated, and unfortunately on GMail, they put the html only version
just to read and write messages, for the other options, filters included,
you must use the standard version, totally unfriendly to screen readers
so it's hard to click on folders. I have this problem here and on blinux-list
in these situation, till I read the complete subject line, I have no way to
understand if message is personal or from a list.

Probably not, as you haven't been around long enough.
Used in the 1950's when tape recorders were first available to the public.
Then there is the wire recorder. 8 track tapes and machines were a spin-off
of the type of audio that was, and still is used in some commercial radio
stations to this day. In the case of commercial radio the cart, is what the
call it is about half the thickness of an 8 track cartridge. One track is for
audio, and the second track is a cue track that has a tone on it that tells
the player to stop when the commercial or jingle is finished. . .

permanent, and even stone will wear down.
There really isn't a
permanent solution. to the safe storage of audio and video files for
 long
periods of time. I was a music librarian for over 20 years, and could see
the collection that I was responsible for changing before my eyes. Vinyl
records became brittle, Audio tape would bind, and compact discs would
 also
go through a similar change. If you have a reel to reel tape machine it
 is
always advised that you store the tape tail out, and in this way you will
avoid the tape sticking when you play it back, as you have to rewind the
tape before playing. How many of us do that?. . . . . .

 a
harddrive, if you put all your stored music on it from many years of
listening, what if the drive crashes, and then you lose everything

2007-05-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'd like to vote to have the list name in the subject line. I don't
filter my messages, and I like the idea of quickly knowing which list
the message I'm reading came from.

I could filter my messages, I'm technically capable, but I just don't. I
could also set up something in the JFW dictionary to ignore a list name,
but again I don't bother. Like I said, if I had a choice, I'd have the
list name in the subject line, but to be honest, I'm subscribed to lists
who do it both ways, and I can adapt either way.

Olusegun -- Victory Associates LTD, Inc. wrote:
Filtration can also be done using the TO OR CC line in the message rules

 additional clutter!!

  Hi
Can anyone suggest a good quality robust wireless transmitter?
I bought 2 small fairly inexpensive wireless transmitters recently
  (now
legal in UK) to 1. tTake sound from my computer's soundcard and
  broadcast
this into the fm band of my new Sony DVD player 5.1 system.
  2. To broadcast Sky from the box throughout my house for each VHF
  radio
  to
  pick up.
(Both transmitters are at different buildings) I probably got what I
  paid
for. Both transmitters do work but sometimes slightly distorted,
  suggesting
not a strong enough range. There is also a fairly strong hum in the
background, I hasten to add which is not in the original.

I'm looking for something which gives good quality, as good as normal
  sound
on VHF. Any suggestions from your own experience?
  Thanks.

Yes check out the 100 milliwat unit if you're looking to transmit just
around your immediate living area. The only issue with this unit is
  you
will need to have someone help you set the frequency. Once that is
  done
  however you should be set.

  Thanks.

To learn more about the Ccrane transmitter, go to

www.ccrane.com

Then look for the link labeled

fm transmitter.

Among the info you will find on the site is the transmitter's manual which
should give you a good overview of what it is.

One would hope that list members are experienced enough not to require the

more verbiage to listen through. It's perfectly easy to set up a rule or

Re: Winamp scripts links was: RE: Winamp Scripts

2007-05-31 Thread Wes Derby
As someone who has been using the scripts for several weeks now, I must say
they're great. I haven't had a problem with the things I normally try to do
in Winamp...I haven't used any of the online features, as I'm an XM
subscriber and use XStreamXM (xstreamxm.com) to listen to their online
stream, and that's about the only one of the online services I'd use often.
:) But, for getting around my library, manipulating audio files, ripping
and burning, the scripts are excellent and highly recommended.

Just my 2 cents.
