Web Cam Nightmares

2009-01-01 Thread Marvin Hunkin
Hi.
well, just noticed in skype, my microphone device shows up and tried the
windows default, real tech , and real tech 1.
and guess what, tried the first 2 and did a skype test call and nothing.
but when i use the real tech 2, and do a test call.
guess what, even though it is muffled, i hear my recorded voice.
so was wondering, to get the best sound quality, and using just standard
heaphones, would a good set of headphones, or maybe a special head set,
would that improve the quality.
and when i did a test message, sort of muffled, and could sort of hear my
voice, being say 30 cm above the top of the machine.
and when i went to options.
and let skype adjust my microphone settings.
but, i still have the problem, of when i went to the video camera settings,
said no web cam and a generic web cam windows device.
so was wondering, if i have to install maybe some video camera software.
so, can you let me know, how to resolve it.
so at least can use skype, and even though a bit muffled.
and using the real tech audio microphone real tech 2 option in skype.
or would it improve quality if i downloaded the latest real tech 2 drivers.
let me know how to resolve this.
at least got voice audio, even though not a very good quality.
cheers Marvin.
ps: for playing video , what is a good player to player.
just downloaded from bit torrent the whole 7 seasons of voyager.
avi files.
and was using a client called miro, but not very accessible.
got windows media player, but not happy about the avi format in windows
media player.
and then quick time not happy, and reverting to the default format.
so, could i try some thing like quick time alternative.
for the visually impaired.

Hi all,

The link below keeps cutting out and sometimes with very long dead

broadcase of the parade?

Hi Gary. According to info I noticed on another list, the described

Also according to info from that same list, the parade begins at 11
a.M. eastern, 8 A.M. Pacific.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, but it works just perfect for me. You don't download the POD cast,
you listen to it on site. It is one of the most well used sites that
the blind use, it shold work without any problems. Maybe ask the list
what to do, I'm out of suggestions!

Re: another take on the Rose Parade

2009-01-01 Thread Gary Wood
Well, I listened to a part of the Rose parade today, but I then decided to
watch on television. They don't do too badlyy describing it on the
networks, and I have a surround sound for TV and music, and I enjoy
listening to it that way. With surround sound, it makes me feel like I'm in
it, rather than watching on the sidelines, where it would sound like in
stereo. I was in a blind marching band in 1959 through my School for the
Blind.

I'll take a good satire on the rose parade before the parade itself any
day.

A good four hours before the actual parade started, KPFK broadcast the
parade. Well, it was a spoof, I think from the 70's, produced I believe
by
something called The Credibility Gap. This historic broadcast starts
about
an hour into this archive recording of KPFK's late-night show. Parts of
it

are not at all politically correct:

Using 2 C-Labs sound cards

2009-01-01 Thread Keith Gillard
Good day and a Happy new year to yall!

I'm really tired of Asus so called high quality on-board sound. So, I am
wondering if one could run Two Creative Labs cards on one box?
Would there be driver conficts for example.

I am interested in these two options:
Sound Blaster Oddegy Platinum.
*I hear it is a decent card and runs JAWS properly
2) Sound Blaster X-FI Platinum.
*I want to use this for all other PC audio needs, including voice functions.

I'd really like to know what you think of these two cards. I don't know if
I can run them together? Any other suggestions would be welcome of course.

If it matters, I am running
XP Pro with SP II
P5E3 Deluxe MoBo
E8400 processor

Cheers and thanks...KG & G-Dog

Cheers!

another take on the Rose Parade

2009-01-01 Thread dean martineau
I'll take a good satire on the rose parade before the parade itself any day.
A good four hours before the actual parade started, KPFK broadcast the
parade. Well, it was a spoof, I think from the 70's, produced I believe by
something called The Credibility Gap. This historic broadcast starts about
an hour into this archive recording of KPFK's late-night show. Parts of it
are not at all politically correct:

Enjoy!

Hello Nokia Cell Phone Users!

My wife purchased a Nokia N75 Cell phone for me from ATT this Christmas.
Can anyone tell me whether or not Code Factory or Talx speech programs work
with this phone. I think ATT subsidizes either one or both of these cell
phone screen readers. Also, I already have Mobile Speak for my Singular
8525 PDA. Can I get Code factory to upgrade this one for a smart phone,
which I think the N75 Phone is.

Thanks for your help and have a Happy New Year.

Hi all

Experimenting with foobar 2000 again after quite a few years.

The version I used to have had shortcut keys for things like play, pause
etc on the bottom row. Has this now been removed from the newer versions or
do you have to designate them yourself?

The player seems to be very accessible. But are there any hints regarding
the maximum accessibility anyone can give me?

RE: R09HR, Zoom H2, or Zoom H4?

2009-01-01 Thread Quinten Pendle
Well, I own the Zoom H2, and can' complain.

The Zoom isn't really that accessible, although Neal Ewers has a rather
valuable tutorial up at blindcooltech about it.
However, if you really want to go for the quality option, I would recommend
the Sony PCM D50 (not included in your list, quite expensive, but well worth
every cent).

Like I said, I'd be a bit surprised if there were a noticeable

An interesting way to test this would be to play a song to someone
using say Foobar, Winamp and Windows Media Player without them
knowing which player was playing the song and then see if they could
identify the players correctly. I certainly don't think I could
tell what software player was playing a file just by listening to
it. This raises the issue of whether a software player sounds
better to someone simply because they like that player better. I
don't have all the answers to this debate but it raises some
interesting issues.

Re: Fwd: The ACB Radio Tuner version 6.9 now released

2009-01-01 Thread Roger Stewart
I've found one shortfall in the ACB Radio Tuner that I hope this new
version will resolve. Most new laptops have a small Drive C partition
which is for the operating system and a larger partition (Drive D on my
machine) for installing programs as well as storing files and data. I
have Winamp installed in drive D on my laptop and when I try to install
the ACB Radio Tuner it won't recognize that Winamp is installed and
won't work properly. Hope this is now fixed or will be in a future update.

Hi,

ACB Radio is proud to announce the release of the latest version of the
ACB

Radio Tuner.

Please note: The website has not yet been updated, but the download link
will give you the latest version.

This new version won't look any different, however it will now allow us
to

change the station lists in the tuner without having to release a new
version of the tuner. The tuner connects to our server and retrieves a
list of the stations when it starts, meaning that we can add, change or
remove streams at any time without you needing to upgrade.

People should upgrade if they wish to keep being able to tune into the
Cafe
or ACB Radio Interactive, as we are required to change our listen links
due

to copyright compliance and the current tuner will not be able to access
these stations for much longer.

You can click the following link to download the latest version of the
tuner:

http://www.acbradio.org/tuner/tunersetup.exe

The website will be updated as soon as I get a chance but I wanted you
to

be able to get it now.

Cheers,
Geoff.

Hi folks. I have tried Winamp yesterday for the first time and I can not get

when I play this podcast on my phone but I just can't get the picture side of

R09HR, Zoom H2, or Zoom H4?

2009-01-01 Thread James Scholes
Hello. I'm looking at buying a new voice recorder, as the Olympus DS50 that I
currently own is, to sum up in 1 word, useless. I've narrowed down my choices
to: The Edirol R09HR, the Zoom H2, or the Zoom H4. Which would people
recommend, both from a quality and accessibility standpoint?

Hi Angel,

You shouldn't have anywhere near 240 files, even if you downloaded all of
the language options.

I suggest that you download an installation file from
http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/?q=download

The latest release version is 1.51, which has been around for quite some
time. The latest beta is 1.70 (Beta 2) which has also been
around for a long time, so it would appear that work on this program has
stopped.

If, when you first try to run it, you get an error, you might also need to
install some ASPI drivers for Windows XP. There is
information on the download page about this. I don't know if the program
runs with Vista.

I have been using the beta version with Windows XP Home for some time
without any problems.

Barry Chapman

Re: Does the sound quality of different software media players differ?

2009-01-01 Thread Bob Seed
I disagree with your comments. The idea of a player with equalization is
that you have the capability of adjusting the shape of the audio in order to
meet your preferences in much the same way that one adjusts a volume
control, or the base and trebel controls on one's stereo system. There has
to be a way to composate for line loss as the signal comes down the pipe to
you from the internet. If you don't like the equalization settings simply
put all of your settings on flat response without shaping the audio.

Hello!
To me it sounds like if you have to tweak the sound then this player should
be thrown out.

From my point of view this is This kind of talk is ONSENSe but thats me.

I mean if you have an eq built in to your player and not use it thats fine
because then you may be satisfied with the sound.
But if you would like to use the eq its ok for me.
I mean the eq will bring out more feeling to the music and tweak it as you

This is funny. I think we have an ambiguity going on here, between two
senses of "quality." When I first read the question in the subject line, I
took it to refer to the *qualitative* "feel" of the sound produced by
different players, as opposed to the *quantitative* numbers at which they
might test out in a sound lab; and, in the *qualitative* sense of "quality",

I definitely do hear differences between different players. The differences
I hear may well be due to different default settings. If I tweaked one
player of whose sound I am not that fond, I might well get it to sound close

to another player whose sound I prefer. But that is why I prefer the sound
of the player whose sound I don't have to tweak to make it sound as I think
it ought; because I don't have to tweak it.

NONE of this talk of the quality of the sound produced by a player has
anything to do with the good vs. bad scoring a player might receive in a
sound lab's test of its technical specifications. In this regard, I suspect
you are right; all the players would score pretty much alike.

I'm no audiophile, and my ears aren't what they used to be, but I
would be
a little surprised if there were any noticeable difference in the quality
of the output you get from different media players. I haven't researched
this in particular, but the different reviews I've read of the different
media players talk about features, ease of use, bloat ware, I've
never seen a review talk about sound quality of one software media player
over another. I wonder how much of this perceived differences in the
players is due to default equalizer settings? IMHO, if someone likes the
sound they're getting from one player over another than that's the player
they should be using. I think the test Steve describes would be
interesting, but people wouldn't have to guess which layer was which but
just rather which one they preferred.

Like I said, I'd be a bit surprised if there were a noticeable
difference
in sound quality between the players, but it wouldn't be the first time I
was surprised over something like this.

My wife purchased a Nokia N75 Cell phone for me from ATT this Christmas.
Can anyone tell me whether or not Code Factory or Talx speech programs work
with this phone. I think ATT subsidizes either one or both of these cell

which I think the N75 Phone is.

Thanks for your help and have a Happy New Year.
