From: David You will have noticed, that MaPlEr displays information like Artist, Album and Track title, when playing your songs. Each of these informations are displayed in their respective columns. Unfortunately, the speech synthesizer in the screen reader, does not always split these informations, hence often you will have the full line of information read as one long phrase, making it a bit hard to distinguish the one column from the other. This can easily be fixed: Thing is that MaPlEr standard ships with the 'split character' between columns set to a single dash, that usually will have little effect on most voices in your screen reader. Here is how to fix it: 1. go to Settings (Alt-S) 2. Choose Optical Settings. 3. Tab to 'Character between columns', and here type the period sign on your keyboard followed by a Space (. ). 4. Press Enter. Your speech now will make a small pause between each information, making it somehow more comprehendable to scroll through your playlist. ... MaPlEr has the ability to remember the last four played playlists. You easily can access them by going to the File menu, and pressing 1 through 4. On the other hand, if you want to switch between these even more quickly, here is a suggestion: 1. Go to Settings menu (Alt-S). 2. choose Keyboard (K). 3. Choose Define Shortcuts (E). 4. Scroll down to File - 1. 5. Press a wanted hotkey, for instance, CTRL-1. 6. Repeat the two previous steps for File -2, File- 3, and File -4. 7. Press Tab, and press Enter on OK. From now on, you can press the newly defined hotkeys (in the example Ctrl-1 through Ctrl-4), and quickly switch between the last four playlists. When is this feature useful? Well, say you are listening to an audiobook. It is defined by MaPlEr as a playlist, and the software will keep track of where in the book you are, at any given time. You now get tired of the book, and want a break, in which you want to listen to some music. Your second playlist now will be holding your music. After half an hour of music listening you want to go back to your audiobook, and simply switching back to your playlist that holds the book, will put you where you left your reading. With the above defining of hotkeys for this switch, it is done in a swift to 'pop' between your playlists. Start playing around, and you will soon find your MaPlEr gets even a greater tool. multi track recording
Hi all. How many of you would do multi track recording if it was accessible. For example, the victor Stream speaks, the Book Sense speaks, Olympus ds71 and other units speak, and there are talking watches. We need a digital multi track recorder, for recording original music, that speaks, so that, for every menu function, a spoken word alerts us. Who would be interested in this issue? Hello Dain, I was talking to someone at Apple the other day about a Mack Book Pro. I said something to him about Voice Over and audio editors for the Mack. He said something about Garage Band, if I'm spelling that right. Only if you don't mind, I'd like to know what I'm getting myself into by making the switch from a PC to a Mack. For starters, in audio recording and editing, what can the Mack do that the PC can't. Thinks in advance. My best regards. Hi! Yep, you get Garage Band as standard with your Mac, I've never used it but you'll find tutorials on Garage Band at http://www.icanworkthisthing.com these tutorials have been written by blind users who use a Mac, you'll find just about everything you'll probably want to ever know about Voiceover and Iphone up there too! so that's a damn good resource. As wel as Garage Band you get Quicktime Player, no this application isn't an editor but it is a sound recorder so you have that to be going on with at least if you want to record something. As you know I use a variety of recorders and editors with my Mac, my favourite recorder would have to be Audio Hijack Pro, records from any app or any sound device. My favourite recorder/editor would have to be Amadeus Pro which handles multi track recording/editing too! funny we should be talking about multi track recording/editing on pc-audio right now. Anyway have fun and I'll answer your questions where and if I can, if I can't answer them then I'll put you in touch with people who can. Yes, it allows the removal of crackle and hiss, pops and so on. If you want you can use additional plug-ins which are built-in to the Mac's operating system, available on the net or available from third party vendors for purchase. RE: Revisiting nls digital player
Well, I'm a tiny bit confused with what you're doing. For my DTBM from NLS, I extract each book I download from BARD into it's own folder in the root directory on the USB flash drive or blank NLS cartridge. Any MP3's go in the Audio+Podcasts folder, which is also in the root of the flash drive or NLS cartridge. Now when I hold down the play/pause key and go into the Bookshelf, I can go to any of the books I've downloaded, the user's guide or the Audio+Podcasts folder, which shows up as a single book. Each MP3 in that folder is like a different chapter in that book. I do not have a $DTB folder anywhere, which is why I'm thinking we may be talking about two different things and why I'm a bit confused. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dave McElroy WA6BEF Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 12:42 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Revisiting nls digital player Hmmm. The nls books showed up beautifully but the other is invisible. To get to the users guide on my machine, I must hold down the info key and it toggles into it. What I'm trying to do is to access an MP3 book I've put on the flash mem. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Christopher Chaltain Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 10:26 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Revisiting nls digital player Well, I'm a tiny bit confused with what you're doing. digital multi track recording
Hello everyone, I sent a message earlier today about a concept for a multi track recorder with speech. It would be a stand alone unit, similar to a Tascam 2488, Korg D3200, etc. For every button you push, or menu for editing you move to, it would always speak, to let you know where you are. I've contacted Tascam, let them know my idea, they're interested, but wonder how many blind people would buy one. A stand alone unit would be more stable than a Mac or PC based software set up, and much less costly. I'd like to compile a list of all interested individuals. If I can show Tascam, or Korg, or Yamaha, that such an item would have marketability, development may take place. I mentioned Victor Stream and Book Sense and Olympus as examples. The technology exists, it's just a matter of putting it in one unit. We just need to convince the right manufacturer that speech added to a multi track recorder is worth their time producing one. I would also like to propose this idea to other blind community users groups. The more blind individuals alerted to this idea, the more I can show manufacturers that this will sell. johnnyru...@windstream.net To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Well, I'm not sure what to say. I don't recall seeing any instructions that involve a $DTB folder on the NLS player. If I saw any such instructions, I either assumed the person knew what they were talking about, were talking about another player (such as the Victor Stream, which I don't have) or I just didn't pay too much attention since it was already working for me. BTW, I don't know that using a $DTB folder doesn't work. If you want to try what works for me you can. Otherwise, maybe someone else can help you. As I said before, I don't use a $DTB folder. Both on my blank NLS cartridge and my USB flash drive, I extract my BARD books directly into their root directories. This means I get one folder per book, and these folders are in the root directory. I also have an Audio+Podcasts folder in the root directory. I drop my MP3's into this folder. I have a standard player, so when I hold down the play/pause key I end up in my bookshelf, and I can use my forward and rewind keys to select the user's guide, any of the books I have and Audio Files. It sounds like you have the advanced player, so you can get to the user's guide with the info key. If I select the Audio Files entry in my book shelf, I hear the first MP3 start to play. Now I can use the forward and rewind buttons to move through that MP3 file and jump to the next file in the folder. Like I said this works for me. I too am following instructions I got from another list, plus a little bit of trial and error. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dave McElroy WA6BEF Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 2:01 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Revisiting nls digital player I was following the inscructions from this list. Ireland Joe, You have Windows XP, and Jaws 9. Do you have Windows Media Player? You can convert MP3 to Wma, or WMA, to MP3, from Windows Media Player. I do it all the time. RE: Revisiting nls digital player
Well, just for grins, I moved all of the books on my blank NLS cartridge (which obviously isn't really blank) into the $DTB folder, and everything still worked, i.e. I had no trouble getting to each book and getting to my MP3's in the Audio+Podcasts folder. Therefore, I'm not sure what to tell you and why your player isn't working. Also, I'm pretty sure I tried this, but I don't think you can get to the flash drive if you have a cartridge plugged in. What version of FW do you have on the player? You have to be on one of the last two releases to get the Bookshelf function. The latest release is 2.1.3. You can get to this on the standard player by hitting the sleep key 10 times with nothing plugged in. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: Christopher Chaltain [mailto:chalt...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 2:43 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Revisiting nls digital player Well, I'm not sure what to say. I wrote about this some time ago on the list and it does what it says it does, you can record/sequence/arrange/mix multiple tracks of audio and video, having done that you can send the result out as your Master. You use the Goldwave Editor to do the editing of the audio tracks, price is cheap enough, I think I paid $36.00 and its quite accessible with shortcuts to handle most things, a nice touch to the application is that the help screen is launched automatically as soon as the software is run. High Johnny, Right now, I am using an 8 track recorder that I have had for more then 15 years. I've seen the digital 4 8 16 and 32 track recorders in music stores. But always shied away from them. RE: Revisiting nls digital player
Ah, good point Frank. You didn't include the messages you were replying to, but I think this is the same thread talking about how to play MP3's on your DTBM. As anexample of the good information you can get from the BARDTalk web page, it says the following: 10. Can I move a thumb drive with NLS books between my third party reading device and my DTB player and have it work with both? Answer: Yes. The NLS dtbm will locate any NLS books on your thumb drive regardless of the folder names in which they are placed. If your third party reading device requires the NLS books to be in a certain folder, you should place them branching off that folder if you plan to listen to them using both the dtbm and your third party reader. For example, if your third party reader is a Victor Reader Stream, you would place the NLS books in subfolders below $VRDTB on your thumb drive so you could listen to them on both the NLS dtbm and your Stream. Remember that bookmarks including your current reading position are stored on the individual device and will not transfer when you switch the media between reading devices. 11. Where do I put MP3 files I want to listen to on my DTB player? Answer: Create a folder on your thumb drive or a writable cartridge called: audio+podcasts. Note, when creating this folder, use the + sign between audio and podcasts. Additional folders may be created under that main folder. Mp3 files will be played sequentially based on their file names. the NLS dtbm will not announce the names of the files because it does not have a built in text to speech engine. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Frank Brown Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 4:10 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Revisiting nls digital player Hello listers, A great place to get info about the Nls players is the Bardtalk home page at: http://www.bardtalk.com/index.php HTH. Any MP3's go in the Audio+Podcasts folder, which is also in the root of the flash drive or Audio+NLS cartridge. Now when I hold down the play/pause key and go into the Bookshelf, I can go to any of the books I've downloaded, the user's guide or the Audio+Podcasts folder, which shows up as a single book. It would be wonderful if we could create designs that would appeal to anyone plus blind users. I sure wish we could get together in real time and do some designing. This email forum isn't working for building designs and products that are blind friendly. I finally have Skype so I'm thinking I'd like to do some brain storming with people who really believe we can actually design and produce blind friendly music gear. You know, so much stuff is almost there, they just don't connect the dots. Figure out the easiest path to make an existing design more accessible instead of starting from scratch. Or, start from scratch and avoid all the baggage. The more blind individuals alerted to this idea, the more I can show manufacturers that this will sell. johnnyru...@windstream.net To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org No virus found in this incoming message. Marking long MP3 files for skip-to points
Hi all, I sort of asked this question before and someone told me to use Wave Pad. But I am a real greenhorn at this stuff and if someone can help me out with a step-by-step instructions on how to do this, I would be very greatful. I have several 25 to 50 mgb recording that have no skip-to points in them. How can I put several in at say, every 5 minutes so as to better navigate forward and backward through the mp3 audio files. Thanks in advance, Johnny To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
How do I access the broadcasts on mlb.com?
Hi. I saw a note in my email saying that mlb.com was going to be more accessible this year. I decided I'd go ahead and sign up for Gameday Audio. I went to the MLB site, and it does have an FAQ for access issues. It said to go to the main page and click on the AUDIO/VIDEO tab. There's a little problem, though. I'm not seeing anything like that. I called up MLB, and they gave me a phone number to call for such an issue, and nobody answered it. Can anybody help? I do have XM, so I can still hear the home feeds of the teams. I would, however, like to have access to the archived games so I have something to go to sleep with. Thanks in advance for the help. RE: How do I access the broadcasts on mlb.com?
Hi again. I'm happy now. I figured out how to reach the audio broadcasts of the MLB games. Here's where to go to reach them http://mlb.com/mediacenter I tried this site earlier tonight, but either I typed something wrong, or it wasn't working. Oh well. I got subscribed for this season, and I'm listening to the Cincinnati feed of the Reds and Indians. My evening would be complete if the Reds win. They're getting killed! Have a good day. It is tricky but better than it used to be. On 4/2/2010 10:05 PM, Kevin Minor wrote: Hi again. I'm happy now. I figured out how to reach the audio broadcasts of the MLB games.
