Has anybody ever had this happen?

2011-02-11 Thread Larry Higgins

Listers,

Lately I have been experiencing what appears to be a startup problem
that manifests itself when plugging in my card reader with a 16gb
SCHD card for copying content to my VRStream. Some times, I am told
that my device isn't a USB2 device, and I should think about
installing USB2 on my system. OK, at least I think I remember it
saying something to that effect. When I just press escape to remove
the message, my copying definitely is slower than when I don't
receive this message. I think I was also having this problem the
other night when trying to rip with cdex. The rips were painfully
slow. In that case, I went to sleep on it, and the next morning,
things were back to normal, and my rips proceeded normally.

I'm just wondering if there is a place I can go within the control
panel to check on the status of my USB setup in Windows, as in the
control panel. And if so, what should I look for. Whenever I look at
some of this stuff within device manager, it seems more than a bit
over my head, and I consider myself to be an experienced PC user
after lo these 20 years g. Anyway, this problem is becoming both
annoying and worrisome. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Larry

Uplift Radio

2011-02-11 Thread Tom
Gordon McFarlane asked me to post this message for him.

ATTENTION - UPLIFT RADIO - A NEW RADIO STATION

For the past 9 months or so I've been planning to start an
Internet Radio Station and am pleased to announce it began on
Monday 31st January at 7am with the Don Treader Breakfast Show.

The Station is called Uplift Radio, the idea being that with
positive music of all genres, theatre and a diet of
encouraging thoughts and quotes, people might feel good after
listening. It's on 24/7 and is easily accessible on most
Media Players, iPhone and other mobile devices.

All schedule, connection and contact details can be found on:

www.upliftradio.org

Please dip in and hopefully you'll find something you like.

After some teething troubles over the past 2 weeks we've
decided to re-start one or two series e.g. the ever popular
Left Behind dramas available 3 times a day and in an omnibus
edition on Saturdays. This will give people who missed it the
first time a chance to catch up.

Thanks to the moderator for approving this, and to yourselves
for hopefully having a listen.

Gordon McFarlane

Re: Looking for program to rip audio tracks from CD's and is easyto navigable.

2011-02-11 Thread Matthew Bullis
Out of the many I've tried over the years, I like CDEX the best. It's
open-source, and free. If you set it up correctly, and have a bit of
knowledge of how to review the screen with the mouse cursor, then you can
get at a few buttons which aren't tabbable. Read the little pop-up about how
to configure the artist backslash album backslash track name format, and you
can get it set up with folders just the way you like it. From then on, you
can extract cds quickly. I'm using Jaws, and it tends to speak the
percentages pretty monotonously, so be sure to check the box that opens the
tray after extraction. This way, you can turn Jaws off until the door opens.
I hope you like this as much as I do. I'd give the URL, but there's a
problem with the main site right now, and so a Google search seems to serve
you better.

Software to Convert mp3 to aac

2011-02-11 Thread Evan Reese
Hello, I am new to this list, and new to audio software, so I hope I'm not
rehashing a recently covered topic.

I'm using Window Eyes 7.2 on a Vista Home Premium machine. I buy songs and
albums from Amazon at 256kbps mp3 and I want to convert them to 128kbps aac. A
friend of mine says that Quicktime will do it, but that it only works on one
track at a time. Is there something I can get that's accessible and that will
do an album at a time?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Evan.
Welcome to the list.
iTunes will allow you to convert multiple files, even albums or
different file types, to M4A (AAC) by default. Can't remember the
default bitrate but you can look in the import settings of preferences,
accessed with ctrl+comma.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Hey.

You can use Switch, an all-purpose file converter that
supports a variety of formats. Try this page for a quick download:
http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html
Make sure to pay attention when installing as it'll offer to install other
programmes and change your start page if you don't uncheck all the boxes.

But why would you want to downgrade the quality of your music? Maybe you
know this already, but you really should keep it at 256k if you want the
sound reproduction to be closer to the actual recording.

If you use ITunes, you can add the folder to your library containing the
songs, which will make a copy of the tracks as AAC files if you wish. I
think the default is 128 kbps AAC when you firts install ITunes.

aac is a different compression algorithm than mp3, so it's not the same
quality per given bit rate. I don't think you're seeing what I'm saying
here. Listen to any Internet radio stream with a given bit rate for mp3 and
the same bit rate for aac. aac sounds much better per given bit rate than
mp3.

Thanks for that link, I'll try the program.

As far as downgrading goes, I can't tell the difference between 256kbps
mp3

and 128kbps aac, and a guy I know who has a better sound system than I do
and some high end headphones can't tell the difference either. And, they
take up half the space. So why wouldn't I want to convert them?

Hey.

You can use Switch, an all-purpose file converter that
supports a variety of formats. Try this page for a quick download:
http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html
Make sure to pay attention when installing as it'll offer to install
other
programmes and change your start page if you don't uncheck all the
boxes.

heheh

But why would you want to downgrade the quality of your music? Maybe you
know this already, but you really should keep it at 256k if you want the
sound reproduction to be closer to the actual recording.

Hello, I am new to this list, and new to audio software, so I hope I'm
not rehashing a recently covered topic.

I'm using Window Eyes 7.2 on a Vista Home Premium machine. I buy songs
and albums from Amazon at 256kbps mp3 and I want to convert them to
128kbps aac. A friend of mine says that Quicktime will do it, but that
it

only works on one track at a time. Is there something I can get that's
accessible and that will do an album at a time?

Thanks for any advice.

Winamp Not Playing My Converted Files

2011-02-11 Thread Evan Reese
Just a follow-up, my Book Sense plays the m4a files I converted, but not
Winamp. When I try to play it in Winamp, the track title comes up, but all the
file information is 0, track length, bit rate and sample rate.

Very strange.

AN M4A file is just a container, and when you used switch, you don't really

I got that Switch converter program, and I did get it to convert an album.
It doesn't take that long either. First, I tried aac, then I tried m4a.
Both conversions seemed to yield the same size files, so I imagine they're
the same bit rate. But my Winamp won't play them. All the CDs I've ripped
are in m4a, and Winamp plays those just fine. Anyone know what I might be
doing wrong? I can play the original mp3 files in Winamp, and I can play
other m4a files, but not the m4a files in the album I converted.

Thanks for any guidance.

Re: Winamp Won't Play My Converted Files

2011-02-11 Thread Evan Reese
Yes, I've heard that before, although I confess I don't really understand
it. And how is a user to know what is happening to their files when they are
being converted if m4a is only a container? But I know for sure that Winamp
plays aac files, but it won't play the converted aac files either.

And it is still strange that my Book Sense will play the m4a files, whatever
they are encoded as, and my Winamp will not. As far as I am aware, there is
not an audio file format that the Book Sense supports that Winamp does not,
not for playing music, at any rate.

Clearly, I need to do more investigating.

Re: Software to Convert mp3 to aac

2011-02-11 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Newer versions of Switch have some accessibility issues when tabbing
around the interface, but if you use the menu bar and the hot keys, I
think you'll find you can get to everything you need. BTW, I don't have
a problem clicking on the interface buttons with the JAWS cursor. In
other words, tabbing around the interface and using the space bar or the
enter key on different buttons can lead to unexpected results. Using the
JAWS cursor to simulate mouse clicks on the different buttons works just
fine.
