Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player
Dear list, I'm not a technically advance person. However, I will like to know whether I can install rockbox on any MP3 player. nick danger danger...@verizon.net 2011/03/08 09:38 PM Houdy Chris, Well said and that's exactly right. Why go through all of the naggings of D I Y when you can get peace of mind by allowing someone who truly knows the product to take the edge off. I'm as savvy as they come with lots of computer related apps and stuff, but I always when something's over my head consult the experts and have no problems paying a couple a dollars for the peace of mind. It's a well spent investment and not a rip off. A rip off occurs when proper service is not provided, and by having the rockbox firmware pre-installed properly by an expert, is truly a service that gives peace of mind to all users, savvy and those of us who are non-savvy alike. I have clients who in fact pay me to do their scans, and software updates which by most of my standards any lay person should know; however they choose for the peace of mind to have me do it and are satisfied that the jobs done and done right. Now is that ripping someone off, or providing peace of mind for them? Tony God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the weaponry to make a difference. - coda from Immortals Anonymous -Original Message- From: Christopher Chaltain Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2011 12:27 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Presentation of Rockbox on a Talking MP3 Player I haven't bought one of these MP3 players myself, but the last time I was shopping around for a Sansa e280, I was tempted. Here's what I spent my time doing getting that Sansa e280: 1) First, since the Sansa e280 couldn't be purchased new any more, I went to eBay to find one. I don't spend a lot of time on eBay, so there was a learning curve doing this. 2) At the time, Rockbox only supported v1 of the Sansa E series firmware, so I had to contact each Sansa e280 seller and explain to them how to check the level of firmware and make sure I was getting one that had the v1 level of the firmware. 3) Once I got my Sansa e280, I had to reformat the Sansa's memory since it contained a virus. Luckily my antivirus software caught it before it got onto my hard drive. 4) After reformating the Sansa's memory, I had to download the utility to reload the Sansa's factory firmware. 5) I was finally ready to reinstall Rockbox, which fortunately went off without a hitch, but I'm very careful to install Rockbox manually and follow the instructions in the manual very carefully. 6) After getting Rockbox installed, I realized the battery in the Sansa e280 wasn't holding a charge. I replaced that battery with a battery from one of my other Sansa e280's, which had a different problem. I consider myself pretty technically savvy, and I did get an Sansa e280 with Rockbox installed on it, but considering how much time I spent doing it, spending a few extra dollars to have it all done for me would have been money well spent. I've also spent quite a bit of my time helping others get Rockbox installed on their MP3 players, so I know there are people out there less technically savvy than I am who probably could not have done what I did to get my Sansa e280 up and running. I don't think this is a rip off at all, and I think it's unfair to make people who are less technically savvy or have less time on their hands to feel bad or feel like they're getting ripped off when they go this route. I could change my own oil, but I choose to take my car to a place to have it done. I could do my own financial planning, but I choose to hire someone to do that for me. Paying someone for peace of mind or time saved is not a rip off. -- Christopher (CJ) chalt...@gmail.com On 03/07/2011 03:54 PM, David Truong wrote: Hi, For what it's worth. I couldn't be bothered searching for such a beast and then having to go to the shops and buy the player then go to the rockbox site and download the right rockbox version and install it etc. It was so much more convenient to get Accessible Electronics to rockbox it for me and deliver it. Also, I knew that the player would already be good to go so no worrying about that. Plus the price was very reasonable. Laz was very good to deal with as well. So there you go. Personally, I'd encourage anyone who wants a great sounding mp3 player already talking to give Accessible Electronics a look. David Truong. Blocking out screen reader when recording with total recorder?
Listers, I want to say, thanks! To all that helped me to get going with total recorder. I am recording with mic, and streaming from the net. One more thing, how to I stop the recorder from picking up my screen reader while recording?I remember hearing that in the tutorials. That still can be done, right? I am informed that if one is not well versed in the protocols involved in installation of software on a portable device, that it is possible to turn it into a brick. I plan to purchase one of these devices, and frankly, in spite of my level of experience, I would be pleased to give the gentleman a few dollars to do it for me. Hi , if you are recording through software you can't block it out, because the what you hear option is turned in your computer. The only thing you can do is get an external synth so your screen reader voice doesn't come through. If your recording through the sound board this won't be a problem. Exsept what comes through the mike. You can edit that out by steping the time interval down to 1 second or so. - Original Message - From: Carliss seeje...@satx.rr.com To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2011 8:53 AM Subject: Blocking out screen reader when recording with total recorder? Hi, List, There's more to the proper operation of a talking MP 3 player than installing the Rockbox folder. There's another folder involved. There are quite a few functions which I suspect that most players won't support. I'd rather have Mr. Mesa's technical support than I would want to experiment with. I have one of his units and it's excellent. Re: Blocking out screen reader when recording with total recorder?
I don't think it is possible to block out speech in total recorder starting in Windows vista. I certainly haven't been able to do it in windows 7. The old interface which allowed for this in the past will not install in windows 7. My solution was a little complicated. I am a Jaws user so I can assign jaws to another sound card. I assigned Jaws to the built in sound card on my computer and I put in a creative SB audigy sound card as a default sound card to play everything else. Re: Blocking out screen reader when recording with total recorder?
Well I cheated, I use 2 sound cards, speech comes out one and I use the other which is a better card for all my recording/playback, sound cards are dirt cheap these days so no problem having multiples. Now I'm not sure whether this feature is still available but I remember seeing an exclusion list somewhere, this lists purpose was to allow Total Recorder to exclude running software from the software recording, thus you could add say JAWS to this list and Total Recorder would ignore it when you were recording a software stream. I remember a year or 2 ago there was some talk of using espeak on rock box, this meant that you could read text files on your sansa mp3 player. Do any of your mp3 players do this if so I might be interested. thanks in advance. Re: Blocking out screen reader when recording with total recorder?
Greetings, I cannot undersstand why people have problems with TR picking up system events. Obviously, with two sound cards, assign **all** system events, such as Jaws, notification of mail, any other system sounds to one card and the sounds you want to the other, then if using GoldWave, soundforge, TotalRecorder, audacity, recording from the net / line in / microphone / these can be assigned to the other card. I have TR V8.2PRO, I only have the virtual driver loaded and to date, have **never** had any problems with system events getting onto my recordings. I do not have problems with line in / microphone recordings, though I tend to use TR in it's simplest way, prefering to carry out any edits in GoldWave as I find this much easier. I would prefer not to mix microphone into a live stream, so the problem does not arise with me using TR. If I remember rightly, when installing TR, it keeps your current settings, if there is a way of changing these whilst installing, I cannot remember seeing it hence, my next comment assumes a new installation. I believe early during the installation, you can choose which drivers to load, I think all three are checked by default, all you need do, therefore, is uncheck the ones other than the virtual driver, job completed, for if I remember rightly, it will pick up your settings, licence and username details.
