Question on Shoutcast/WHMSonic

2012-04-11 Thread Humberto Rodriguez
Hello and pardon me for the cross posting,

I have used Icecast2 and Centova for some time, but am now looking at
Shoutcast and the WHMSonic panel, which is much simpler an definitely more
accesible. As most of you know, the great difficulty with Centova is having
to drag audio files into the playlists.

With WHMSonic you don't have to do that, but I wonder if any of you can help
me with two things:

First, I haven't found how to show at my webpage the song that is playing or
the number of listeners. That was simple with Icecast, but must also be
possible with Shoutcast/WHMSonic, because it shows on Tapin Radio. There
mus be either PHP or Java Script code to do it.

The other thing I need is to configure playlists to play at certain
intervals, such as every half hour to identify the station or a promo every
three or four songs. I don't know if it is possible, and if so, how to do
it.

The website for whmsonic.com has only videos with screen capture, no written
manual and the FAQs are out of order. I have looked extensively in Google
without luck. If someone has a manual for WHMSonic I would greatly
appreciate it.

Humberto

Noise reduction software recommendations please:

2012-04-11 Thread Don Breda

I have two up coming projects to work on.

One involves removing tape hiss and the other involves removing noise
from vinyl records.

If I take gold wave and sound fordge out of the picture which I must
do, what other stand alone programs can I use to accomplish these tasks.

I will consider gold wave only if there are some good plugins to
accomplish my tasks cause I don't like gold waves built in noise reduction.

I also don't like how gold wave handles previewing and some of the buggs
there in.

Having said all that recommendations please or have I effectively nailed
my coffin shut.

Thanks.

Hi!

The Noise Reduction features of Goldwave seem to do a reasonable job and I
recommend this software for 2 reasons, firstly its damn good value for money
and secondly the developer and author has gone out of his way to make this
software accessible.

The next recommendation I'd have is Total Recorder though its Noise Reduction
software plugin is an add-on thus you need to pay for it, the plugin isn't
expensive and does an affective job in most circumstances.

And finally, I won't recommend Sound Forge, firstly I think the product well
over priced and secondly the people at Sony Software don't give a damn! about
accessibility with their products.

Yep points taken, the time considerations you outlined in your post below is
another reason why I recommended Goldwave etc, I don't have all day to play
either and - generally speaking - the noise reduction in Goldwave and the
plugin for Total Recorder do a very reasonable job without having to spend too
much time to configure the operation or whatever.

Don,

I believe that the noise reduction plug-in that comes with Sound Forge is
available as a separate
purchase. You'd have to be sure that it would work with whatever sound editor
you are going to use,
though, and it is expensive, some might say over-priced. I have found that the
four noise reduction
modes that one can select are a plus because they
each have somewhat different artifacts that can be less intrusive depending
upon the program material.
This noise reduction plug-in is not part of Sound Forge Studio. If you haven't
yet, you might try a
demo of Adobe Audition. However, for it to work well, it needs some support by
your screen reader as
some information has to be retrieved by means other than an off-screen model.
I had pretty good luck
with its noise reduction in the past, but I don't know how accessible all of
the plug-in parameters are
in Adobe Audition any more. I would definitely take some time with the demo
before putting out the
cash.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

You must have been using an old version of GoldWave to not like it. I
haven't seen any bugs etc with the latest version and the author gives a
darn about accessibility, and that's not from reading either. I trialled
GoldWave for several years, and finally bit the bullet by first
purchasing a one year license, then the lifetime one. I don't regret it
one bit. Same with Total Recorder. The author gives a darn about
accessibility, trialled it for several years, bought the lifetime
license some two years ago and don't regret that either.

Adobe Audition hasn't been very accessible since version 1.5 as far as I
keep hearing from other users. Last March 2011 I lost most of my usable
eyesight and had to give up using Adobe version 3. They kept talking about
coming out with a 64 bit version but I haven't seen a new version yet. I
was hoping for a new version and that someone would be able to write Jaws
scripts if it wasn't accessible. I found the noise reduction in Adobe
Audition 3 to be far superior to anything I've been stuck using in the past
13 months.

Well I just downloaded the 64 bit version of depoper and talk about a

Also it looks like depoper does a very good job of removing tape hiss

It may be a big winner here and I will certainly pay the $18 for the

I also like groove mechanic but it deeds to be more configurable in
some cases to do the job and well he hasn't updated it in years

Re: Noise reduction software recommendations please:

Hi Chris. I quite agree with you on most points.

The developer is awesome! when it comes to his concern for accessibility.

I have used gold wave on and off for many many years and purchased a
full license for it way back in the very early 90s.

I don't regret that purchase.

I have the latest version on my machine as I type this and frankly yes
there are buggs. I don't know of many programs that don't have some so
this is not a criticism at all.

I don't happen to like the noise reduction capabilities in goldwave
myself but that I gguess can be a matter of personal preference.

I do wish that the preview options were bettter designed in gold wave
and that switching presets while previewing would always take effect
immediately, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I also wish the preview button was a toggle instead of having to go
over to the stop button.

I also wish it had a bypass checkbox and also a way to listen to the
output of only the removed noise as other programs do.

Having said all that, for the money you just can't beat it.

To say its a bargain is tipucal british understatement grin!

I don't know that Izotope was accessible as a Winamp plugin, but wanted to
put it in the so called virtual air chain when I did some shows with Station

are buggy and can cause you dead air in an application like that, but that
Izotope was to give some warmth or whatever you call it to the sound.

And finally, I won't recommend Sound Forge, firstly I think the product
well over priced and secondly the people at Sony Software don't give a
damn! about accessibility with their products.

Re: Noise reduction software recommendations please:

2012-04-11 Thread Dane Trethowan
I guess we can be thankful for the amount of choice out there.

I've had quite a bit of success with the Noise Reduction of Goldwave and I've
not needed to do much to get the results I've been after, if I remember
correctly I think I wrote an article on this some time ago to the list so it
will be in the list archives somewhere I'm sure smile, the best way to handle
the Goldwave Noise Reduction - as with most other noise reduction software and
plugins - was to reduce noise in a Step-by-step and Gradual process rather
than trying to reduce all the noise at once.

The next step was to ensure you got a good Capture of the noise to use in the
reduction process.

No, the noise reduction facilities of Goldwave, Total Recorder and even Sound
Forge aren't professional grade however they all do a pretty good job given
what they are and I'd go so far as to say that the noise reduction facilities
of Goldwave and Total Recorder probably surpass that of Sound Forge given that
no development of the Sound Forge Noise Reduction software has taken place to
my knowledge since the old Sonic Foundry days.

The best ever noise reduction system I've used is with Amadeus Pro for the Mac,
leaves everything I'e used on a Windows machine behind but not everyone has a
Mac unfortunately so you'll all have to do the best you can smile.

Don,

I believe that the noise reduction plug-in that comes with Sound Forge is
available as a separate
purchase. You'd have to be sure that it would work with whatever sound
editor you are going to use,
though, and it is expensive, some might say over-priced. I have found
that the four noise reduction

modes that one can select are a plus because they
each have somewhat different artifacts that can be less intrusive
depending upon the program material.
This noise reduction plug-in is not part of Sound Forge Studio. If you
haven't yet, you might try a
demo of Adobe Audition. However, for it to work well, it needs some
support by your screen reader as
some information has to be retrieved by means other than an off-screen
model. I had pretty good luck
with its noise reduction in the past, but I don't know how accessible all
of the plug-in parameters are
in Adobe Audition any more. I would definitely take some time with the
demo before putting out the

cash.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

2012-04-11 Thread Steve Jacobson
Merv,

I was frustrated when I could no longer use Audition 1.5, it was what I used
for quite some time.
Audition 2 was not very accessible at all. Audition 3 his kind of hit or miss.
 There is a Window-Eyes
App for it that seems to bring it to life some, but I still found gaps.
However, one's ability to
explore the screen with the mouse pointer or JAWS Cursor in Audition 2 and 3
isn't good at all since
text is displayed in a way that is not visible to screen readers off-screen
models. I had also heard
there were JFW scripts for it as well but don't have any experience with them.

Someone asked where you can get a demo, and I believe one can still get one on
the Adobe web site.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Subject: LS100 as an audio interface

Here are two short recordings of bad things the Olympus LS100 does
when used as an audio interface. First, on a PC:
 http://q-audio.net/i/1KTV
Next, on a Mac under OSX: http://q-audio.net/i/1KTV - When I called
Olympus technical support about this, of course they disavowed any
knowledge of this problem. Before I put my money down, I want it
fixed, of course! Does anybody know if this is an LS100 problem or a
PC/Mac problem, and is there a fix for it either way? If the problem
is not related to the computer(s) used for recording, has Olympus been
notified that they have a seriously wrong thing going on, and if so,
how have they responded, if at all?

It is a stand alone program.

Just search for depoper in google and it should be the first hit.

Well I just downloaded the 64 bit version of depoper and talk about a
developer who is concerned about screen reader users this is him.

Also it looks like depoper does a very good job of removing tape hiss
without much tweaking either.

It may be a big winner here and I will certainly pay the $18 for the
program.

I also like groove mechanic but it deeds to be more configurable in
some cases to do the job and well he hasn't updated it in years
unfortunately.

I have two up coming projects to work on.

One involves removing tape hiss and the other involves removing noise
from vinyl records.

If I take gold wave and sound fordge out of the picture which I must
do, what other stand alone programs can I use to accomplish these
tasks.

I will consider gold wave only if there are some good plugins to
accomplish my tasks cause I don't like gold waves built in noise
reduction.

I also don't like how gold wave handles previewing and some of the
buggs there in.

Having said all that recommendations please or have I effectively
nailed my coffin shut.

Thanks.

Sound Forge 8 is installed on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine just fine. I
don't use it too often, since I have version 10, but it's there and will
work.

The problem is, nobody knows just what kind of thing it is--hardware
or firmware, and Olympus disavows any knowledge of its existence.

As for the menus talking, they, Olympus, claim that everything talks
except the menu option to set the clock.

That was odd. It does the same on the MAC? Both links lead me to the
same file basicly. They had better fix that chop, chop. I mean, that's
one of the things I kind of wanted to do with it. That's not cool man.
Yeah, not cool for $400. That's very sad. It's very sad that the DM-4
does it too. It's another $400 unit. What a shame.

I was trying to decide between saving for that and a used acoustic guitar at
a pawn shop my best friend manages. Unfortunately, I had to use the $300 I
had saved on a bill yesterday. This thread makes me glad I didn't by the
Olympus.
