see if your router is supported.

The RTAC3200 is the first Router where I’ve seen a VPN client function, I’ve
seen the server function often enough.

Anyway its just so much more convenient to have the Router do everything in my
view, switch on your VPN and go listen to 5 Live Extra on your portable
Internet radio on your bedside, go to your Set-Top Box and watch Netflix from
the U.S. to get those shows you don’t get in your countries version of Netflix
and so on.

Unfortunately it appears that this Open Source firmware isn’t available for the
RTAC3200 at this time and that’s probably because the RTAC3200 is less than 3
months old. I see the firmware available for the slightly older models from
Asus.

Do you have the auto band stearing on? Anotherwards the router decides what
band the device is on? For now I have this on and things are working great.

HI have a new Asus RTAC3200 Tri-Band router here and already I’ve noticed a
huge difference when streaming audio/video around the house.

Anyone on this list I’m sure will know that I love to stream content whether by
AirPlay, DLNA or any other method so when I first heard of this Router a few
months ago I started saving and reading other people’s comments on the beast.

I won’t go into the ins and outs of the Router itself here given that the topic
of Routers can get very technical indeed however I can say that - if you’re one
of those users of Streaming technology and you just like a nice robust Wi-Fi
connection amongst the hundreds possibly around you - then this Router is a
worthy item to consider, the link below is a most interesting read and explains
the features of the Router, what they do and how they improve performance and
usability with other devices on your Network.

Re: enjoy uninterrupted audio/video streaming

2015-12-22 Thread Dane Trethowan
I’ve turned all that off and I cdo the configuration manually.

For example my computers are on one Wi-Fi Network whilst Smart Phones are on
another and the remaining 2.4GHZ devices are on the old band.

at this point as far as I’m aware only a handful of devices support the band
steering you mentioned such as the latest Asus tablets and so on.

samsung Smart Phones have a similar system which is more compatible with
everything, just register all your wi-Fi networks and let the Samsung product
switch between them according to signal strength, according to Samsung their
method provides uninterrupted streaming too.

There’s a manual available on how to set up Band Steering with Asus Routers if
you want to give it a go.

Asus didn’t make the procedures too clear so a third party did a little digging
and research and came up with a fairly nice manual on the subject, you’ll find
it with Google easily enough.

Re: New member: How about the Zoom H6

2015-12-22 Thread Andy Logue

Hi again Hamit.

Yes I did listen to Neil's demo on the LS100 and indeed I was torn as to
whither to buy that model or the Zoom. I think that I eventually went with
the Zoom after Neil did a mic comparison, under the same studio conditions
and it appeared to me that the Zoom just came ahead. Now that I've got it,
I regret a little not going for the Olympus as talking menus are almost
essential for blind users. But many of the menu functions don't really need
to be changed much. I suppose if I was to use the microphone capsules one
day then Phantom power through one or two of the XLR's, the next day, then
I'd need to be able to turn Phantom power off and on. Now if Zoom and
Olympus got together, well then we would all be happy until the next new
development. I must say the function for fixing the upper sound level on
theLS100 sounds very attractive and along with talking menus, then it must
be a fine device indeed.

Very best wishes.
Andy.

Hi all.

Following with interest your discussions today on digital recorders.

I note that a member mentioned my hero, Mr. Neil Ewers.

I've had a few devices but after listening to Neil's demo of the Zoom H6,
I

went out and bought one.

To find out more about this device, you can listen to what Neil thinks
about

it at:

All things Neil, at:

http://ravenswood.org/AllThingsNeal/

As to what I think about it! I must agree with Neil, it's the best handy
recorder that I have ever come across.

I can record a folk band with it's built-in XY microphone capsule at 24
bitt, 196 Khz in WAV format and it sounds even better than CD quality.
Another internet friend, who listened to my recording said that it was in
blue ray quality, whatever that means? all I know that it's a fantastic
device and although a bit expensive, very much considering before choosing
a

new device.

The only problem I have is the fact that hardly any blind people have yet
started to use it, apart from Neil and myself, so there is little support
out there, for example, understanding the menu structures etc. The Zoom
H6
does not speak at all so it's a matter of getting sighted assistance to
set

it up before you start recording.

It has four XLR sockets plus the Xy and Right-side microphone detachable
modules and has line in as well as a line out function, enabling this
device

to take over the audio on a DSLR, or to enable monitoring of recording as
you get it, via a AV unit.

I'd be very interested in meeting any other blind users of this device or
even join a support mailing list.

Any advice very welcomed.

Very best wishes.
Andy.

Re: VPN On Asus RTAC3200 Router

2015-12-22 Thread Dane Trethowan
Most routers these days have VPN facilities however you need to check that they
support VPN clients rather than just act as VPN servers, being able to support
Clients mean a Router can connect to a remote VPN service such as Witopia etc.

There are several Asus Routers that support VPN clients including the RTN66U -
bigger Brother to the RTN56U I was using - but as you say that router doesn’t
support the new AC protocol and I think that anyone considering a new router
should consider the AAC protocol for a number of reasons.

The most convincing is that the power of the radios in Routers that support AAC
are much more powerful than those that don’t.

Second, the data throughput speed is much faster.

Third, all modern devices such as Notebooks, Tablets and Smart Phones support
it.

And finally, AAC is far more robust when it comes to rejecting interference
from other nearby Wi-Fi networks thus you’ll notice a huge difference in the
quality of your audio and video streams, with AirPlay for example there’s none
of that “Lag” all users of Airplay would know so well .
