Getting Rid Of Those FSK files In SoundForge

Removing SFK Files In SoundForge

2017-09-05 Thread Dave Marthouse
I had to re-install SoundForge and I have forgotten the steps to stop it
from leaving files with the SFK extension along with my standard audio
files.  Can someone refresh me on this one.

Since I only have to re-install the program every few years it's one of
those "set it and forget it" functions.

Question On Soundforge

2017-06-15 Thread Dave Marthouse

I've been a happy SoundForge user since 2002.

Recently I had a partial system crash and had to reconfigure and
reinstall the program.

Everything is working fine but for one small but annoying problem. How
do I get rid of the files with the SFK extension that are saved with the
conclusion of every project? They are saved along with my final mixes.
I know there was a way to do this but since it literally has been a few
years since I had to reinstall Sound Forge I have forgotten how. I've
looked through the menus and it isn't obvious. It is one of those (set
it and forget it) functions. I set it and forgot it a few years ago.

Can someone on the list fill me in on how to do this??

Deleting those SFK files gets old real fast.

Free Donload Manager Downloading Audio

2017-04-21 Thread Dave Marthouse
I would like to contact anyone who is using Free Download Manager for

a 24 hour period. But after that the download just stops. I can't seem

Docuscan plus is not a scanner. It is an in the cloud scanning program
that costs 300 bucks, and you still need a scanner with it. Given the
uncertain state of serotek and the fact that this is all done in the
cloud, I would not personally touch that program with a 10-ft pole at
this time. The opticbook 3800 is a good bookedge scanner. If you mostly
want to scan books, that's a good one. But you will still need an
accessible piece of software to go with it. Abbyy Fine Reader pro for
Windows is said to be accessible, although I have no personal
experience with it. The software that comes with the opticbook scanners
is worthless from an accessibility point of view. You can try a free
demo of the above-mentioned docuscan plus to see if it meets your
needs, as you can try a demo of abbyy FR pro, which costs less and
gives you way more control, and more languages, than docuscan. There is
also k1000 and Openbook, but those programs cost considerably more;
they offer many more features and are designed for the blind. So if
that's your cup of tea, then go for it. K1000 just released version 14
with the latest versions of the engines from abbyy and scansoft.

Hi all. This is a tentative inquiry regarding this voice recorder. I
bought it around 2-2.5 years ago but apart from a day or two of
investigation I have never used the machine. I took the battery from the
player and stored it all away for 2 and a half years or more. My interest
has once more been rekindled but after replacing the battery, putting it on
charge over night for around 8 hours I'm a little confused. When attached
to a mains outlet and I then turn on the player I get the start tone and I
can using the voice guidance navigate through the folders. Of course as it
hasn't been used there is nothing in the folders but the voice guidance does
work. However if I disconnect the player from the mains and again turn it
on, I once more get the start up tone but around 3 or 4 seconds later I get
3 quick beeps but the voice guidance doesn't work as when it is attached to
the mains. I at first thought the battery isn't charging but if that were
the case then it wouldn't start and I wouldn't get the start tone so the
player must be getting power from the battery. Unfortunately I will have no
sighted help until Friday to see what is on the screen but if anybody can
tell me what the 3 quick beeps mean and if it is a problem what can I do
about it. Hope you can help but if you do need more info, I'll try and get
that on Friday. Walter.

on, I once more get the start up tone but around 3 or 4 seconds later I get
3 quick beeps but the voice guidance doesn't work as when it is attached to
Walter.

With most laptops having one jack, you may plug either a microphone or a
headset into it and the computer will ask you which one you are using.
It then adjusts to your choice. If you want to use both a microphone
and a headset at the same time, then you are best off using a USB mic.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the messages about Sound Forge Pro 11. I do a lot of editing
of WAV files, and so far this version is proving, at least for me, to be an
utter disaster! Sometimes I can get it to do what I want, but while editing
material out of a large WAV file just now, it wasn't removing everything
that was selected, or else forgetting where I put a marker, and selecting an

earlier portion of the file as a result. What used to be a simple task in
6.0D is taking longer to accomplish in 11, and there's no reason for it.
It's because of all these issues that I'm going back to 6.0D, assuming it
will run on Windows 7. If it ends up not working with this system, I'll
definitely be looking for an alternative product, but right now I've had
enough.

Thanks.

 Hi!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Beatles tour down under though
some might argue its the 50th Anniversary since the Day Music Died,
I'm of the view that The Beatles were just one big noise the 20th
century could have done without but putting that aside I have to admit
that - if you get the right stuff - some of the recordings made of The
 Beatles are quite stunning.

I have 2 sets of Beatles material which I refer to whenever I'm
feeling gloomy and must listen to Beatles material, the first is the
Masters CD collection which was released in 1995 or there abouts,
there are 18 CD'S in the set and they come in a mini writing desk type
box, yep its made out of wood and all, cost me $375 at the time but it
was
 well worth the money.

The other set I have is the Masters in high resolution FLAC format,
even better quality than the CD set I mentioned above.

And - if you don't have a CD player or couldn't be bothered to look
where to buy the high resolution FLAC set - then iTunes offers a very
good substitute, the Masters in AAC+ which still sounds acceptable
 in my lounge room.

Its unfortunate that there are so many dreadful Beatles recordings out
there - even on CD - so you really have to know what to look for, my
guess is that a lot of company's - 20 years ago - just wanted to get
the material out there, remastered from old tapes and didn't really
give a damn about the quality of the finished product.

I visited the U.K. 23 years ago but couldn't take my Radio Shack DX440

back well before the days of such portables as even the Sony ICF-sw7600

First I'm not making an argument again using Apple products. My friends who

However for some of us there is a very good reason to choose the Stream.
Money!

Those people I talk to about their i-phones tell me they pay between 45 and
60 Canadian dollars a month for the provider and data. This along with the
initial price of buying a phone either outright or part of a contract with
the provider..

I use a simple blind friendly phone, cost 100 dollars with 25 more dollars a

month for a provider The new generation Stream when I get will cost me about

a hundred dollars more than the original.

Dane I envy your ability to buy and test as many wonderful products; if I

A couple of things here.

I got a VR Stream - First Generation - in 2009, 5 years ago.

At the time I was warned about the VR Streams dreadful speaker but - given
the size and not knowing any better - I defended the VR Streams speaker,
after all it seemed its better to have a speaker than not have one as my
previous player - Bookport - didn't have one.

So 2009 rolled on and we came to December 9 when I took delivery of an
iPhone 3GS and this proved to be an eye opener.

Not only did the speaker of this device sound ten times as good, the device
had 100 times the functionality of the VR Stream as I was soon to discover.

Now yes, the VR Stream is a Daisy/Audio player but the iPhone did all that
soon and it wasn't long before I started using the iPhone to play Daisy
Books and so forth with, not only that I had the benefits - even then - of
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology so I could stream my material and even listen

to Internet Radio stations in much the same way as those who use the current

generation of the VR Stream do so really, the VR Stream is offering
absolutely nothing that we don't already have if we choose to look around.

On the other hand, Hims Inc are breaking new ground with their new offering
and we find - yet again - that Human Beware are on the catchup roundabout
and still trying to tell us all in their marketing stuff that they know the
market for the visually impaired? What they actually mean is that they know
their own loyal market.

in a minority. I do use bluetooth on my mobile phones, for
pairing the phones etc and have unsuccessfully tried to link
a bluetooth keyboard but have ordered a different one so
don't give up that easily. I think humanware should give us
the choice, whether they will incorporate bluetooth into a
future product is anyone's guess, they will have to do
something good otherwise they will lose out to the market
again, when the vr stream was first released there was not
many similar players but now you have many more and some of
them are better in their own way but it depends on what you
require. I think they had to bring out the new stream mark 2
rather quickly to keep the market otherwise many people
would have gone away from humanware products in favour of
say I devices or similar gadgets which can do much more in
their own way. Again it is personal choice. What will come
after stream mark 2 has gone the whole way as it will
inevitably do in perhaps 5 or more years time, there will be
much different demand. It is good that stream mark 2 has the
wifi so there is several options as to what they can put
that to use with. So far it is just internet radio for me in
the uk and Europe and some book services in the states but
of course for me they are not available. They will add more

Honestly, all this fuss about a FM radio, everyone knows that a FM
radio in a device such as this - whether it be a Phone or similar -
is bound to be inferior to a dedicated FM radio.

The only real reason I can think of that Hims Inc would bother
putting one of these into their products is because they can, a bit
like Tecsun giving you 3,000 memories into a radio, not because they
particularly serve any practical purpose having that many, just
 because

Its the OCR and associated functionality that I would think is more

Hi!

Mary I apologies, its your original eMail I intended to reply to however I
deleted it by mistake so I've had to start with a completely different
subject line.

In your eMail you mentioned the KNFB Reader for iPhone? I did some research
thanks to my friend Google and found that there were no plans for a KNFB
reader for IOS though that information was current as of the iPhone 4S so
things may have changed.

To the point however, if anyone wanted to buy the KNFB reader for say the
Nokia N82 then they would have been looking at a purchase price of $995 so
if the new product from Hims Inc is going to have to offer something pretty
good then the KNFB Reader App for IOS - assuming there will be one and
assuming the pricing is the same - is going to have to offer the gold at the
end of the rainbow right there in our hands.

Hi,

I aggree that on-board sound systems can be pretty good.

Comparisons between different sound cards, if supported by
specifications are invaluable. If not, then an element of subjectivity
takes us in to an area where opinions are only really valuable to the
holder of these opinions. So here are some of my opinions.

I used to be happy with my audiofile 24/96. There were occasional
problems with crackle on one channel, this would go away if the system
were rebooted. I suspect that this was a driver issue, but never really
got behind the problem.

I used this card with XP, and more recently windows 7. The control
pannel, delivered with the latest
revision of the drivers became unusable with a screen reader, However
when set up, the card behaved well enough, considering that the price
also has dropped from the time when I first bought mine, some 8 years
ago. Still a good card, and gave good latency when used with Reeper.

Then I changed the computer, and bought a Dell optiplex, I5 processor, 8
GB ram, and 1 TB HD.

The onboard audio device, a real tek High definition audio system, is
quite frankly, the worst audio device I have ever worked with.

Dell's control pannel, is partly accessible, but it is hit and miss when
changing settings. There are settings in the control pannel, that are
not exposed to the windows mixer, so you have to use it.

I couldn't use the audiofile 24/96 because the optiplex uses PCIE slots
only. The audiofile, is available only as a PCI board, and although
there are converters from PCIe to PCI, the profile of the 24/96 excludes
it from this adaption so this sound card is now in an older dell, which
will run only as long as the capacitors hold out on the board, and they
are blowing so life is limited.

This is why I am now looking to use the audio interfaces from tascam.

I already have a US-122-A B but this device has no windows 7 drivers.
shame.

So I am looking at the current tascam range, similar to the device I
already own, and this replacement should cost about 80 UK pounds.

Then we should be good to go as they say.

Thanks,

Joe

M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 audio interface I bought 10 years ago for my

screen reader audio and music independently. About a month ago, I
bought the Roland Duo audio interface from e-Bay for $37, including

To be honest I couldn't give a damn, its the OCR part which is of interest
to me at least, this really is the first device of its kind outside the KNFB

If OCR does well then I'll be most satisfied.

figured this thing would cost every bit of $900 to $1000. i just wonder
if the media player is better than the booksence was. it has a lot of

Okay, this seems to have worked though I'll let you be the ultimate judge.

Here's a sample of what my Polk Audio bookshelf speakers sound like, they're
not the top of the line speakers from Polk but for $400 they're not bad
either.

I've provided 2 samples, they're the same but in different formats, the
first in FLAC and the second in MP3.

I wonder if anybody on list owns this speaker from Bose. It costs $300.
I saw one briefly last evening at the Verizon store, as I was
purchasing my new iPhone and was pretty impressed with the sound, given
the size of the box. I really haven't looked all that much in to this
sort of speaker. I have an older dock that works with the older style
iPhone connectors, and it really sounds pretty good, but my better half
has sort of taken it over for use in his class-room. So I'd like to
know from those who have experienced this equipment, what did you
think, and are there other units you'd recommend as good competition? I
like the size and the volume and depth of sound, but am not thrilled
with the $300 price tag, naturally.

Hey /Tom,
Do you know where the converted files are supposed to go? When I installed
it, they were set by default to go to the Music folder, and I just left it
that way for the present to test it out. But that's in Windows Vista, that
may be different for different operating systems. But you can check on that
by simply tabbing through the buttons without even going into any menus.
Maybe it's converting and you just can't find the converted files. What
happens when you tell it to convert something? For me, it tells me what file

it is working on and the percentages every so often. If it does that for
you, then I would say that it's converting something, but you just may need
to check to see where it's putting the files it converts.

 It's

 more

However, for convenience, and because I think they deserve it for writing

The following will only be of interest to those living outside the U.S.
where DAB and DAB+ radio services are available.

Yep, another Digital Radio but this one is certainly one of the best I've
heard since I started using DAB+ radio sets more than 3 years ago.

Added to the great sound is the great price you should be able to find this
radio for, I found it for under a hundred Australian dollars.

So why is it so cheap? Because the radio sports an older style IOS dock
which is no longer supported by the newer Apple IOS devices. This shouldn't
present too much of a problem, if you have a device that uses the Lightning
connector then you can purchase an adapter or forget about a docking an IOS
device completely but whatever takes your fancy this radio still remains in
the bargain basket.

The Pure Contour is in the shape of a semi circle with speakers either side
of a front panel.

At the top of the panel is the very large display and below this appears to
be a blank piece of plastic but its far from blank, if the left-hand side
edge is pushed then the panel rotates 180 degrees to reveal an IOS 30 pin
dock connector, press the right-and end of the dock and the Dock spins back
to reveal the blank panel, this has to be one of the neatest and koolest
docking arrangements I've ever seen on any device sporting an IOS dock.

There are few buttons on the radio itself and all are located on the top. A
remote controller unit is supplied with the radio which contains controls
for all functions.

Losing the remote control isn't likely given that a magnetic storage cradle
is provided for the controller at the back of the radio.

The Pure Contour has very nice crisp treble with good mid range and bass
performs strongly thanks to the built-in sub-woffer unit. A sub-woofer in
such a small unit comes as a big surprise but its certainly there and does
its job quite well.

Plenty of volume can be had from this radio given its 10 watts RMS per
channel amplifiers so more than enough power to fill a small room.

The unit supports both DAB/DAB+ and FM bands as well as the IOS Dock and an
Aux-in facility for external devices. A coxial digital out and headphones
socket are provided on the back of the radio next to the power input socket.

I've not tried setting alarms on this radio yet - it has two of those - but
I can tell you that programming presets and so forth is a breeze, just use
the up/down buttons to browse to the station you want - using the select
button to tune - and then hold down the Favourites button for 5 seconds.
Press the Favourites button on its own, use up/down and then the select
button to tuen to the selected Favourite in the list.

The radio runs on AC power only thanks to a 2.5 Amp 12 Volt output power
adapter supplied and will not work on batteries so its designed to be used
on a desk, bedside table, kitchen and so on.

Is there anything I don't like about this radio? Very little and its well
recommended given its excellent sound out of its small footprint, the
excellent quality that Pure radios are known for and the excellent price
these radios can now be purchased for.

RE: Big Sound From Small Footprint

2013-11-22 Thread Dave Marthouse
Ok Dane I understand. I'm not in the UK. I'm in the US and I'm
academically interested in digital radio. The system we use here in the US
is known as IBOC (in band on channel). It rides adjacent to our standard
am/fm signals. It's been on-line here for about a decade or so and in my
opinion it's a non-starter.

Re: The World Ends With The Demise Of Winamp

2013-11-21 Thread Dave Scrimenti
Dane thinks that all anyone needs is what he needs. I wrote to the list a
few months ago asking for a portable recorder that could append and
overwrite, and he unhelpfully wrote back that I don't need those features.
Apparently he didn't communicate this pearl of wisdom to the makers of
ProTools, Sonar, Sound Forge, or any other professional recorder since they
all include the ability to append, punch in etc. If only they knew he didn't
need these things, they could have saved a lot of time.
But if you can get beyond hissnarky attitude, he actually does make some
valid points in that post. Total Recorder is an excellent alternative
player, and it only costs I think $12 for the standard edition. VLC plays
more filetypes than Winamp. I always keep a copy on my system, and whenever
I have a file no other player will play, VLC seems to do it. And just
because Winamp won't be updated doesn't mean we have to stop using it any
time soon. In fact, even newer filetypes might be playable if someone made a
plug-in.
A couple other good things about Winamp. The Pacemaker plug-in that allows
you to change the pitch and/or tempo of a file. I also have a script for
customizable rewind and fast forward that allows me to easily jump back and
forth by increments of any size from a couple seconds to several minutes by
just hitting control plus left or right arrow.
Foobar2000 is pretty good. I can't stand iTunes. If I didn't have an iPod
touch, I wouldn't even have that piece of junk on my PC, although it's not
terrible with the blindTunes scripts if you have JFW.

Okay so are you just saying that or have you actually tried and explored
other players.

For example I've just looked up Windows Media Player Keyboard Shortcuts
using my friend Google and discovered over 200 keyboard shortcuts.

I know VLC has hundreds of the damn things and even more if you're
prepared to take a few moments to customise the software.

I'm yet to find what iTunes doesn't do that Winamp does. The interface
is different and takes a little getting used to I admit.

If you're prepared to spend a small amount of money you can buy one of
the most exciting pieces of audio software for the Windows PC to ever
have been invented on the planet and that's Total Recorder, the player
is incredibly powerful even for the Standard Edition.

And finally, supposing Winamp is a spent force come December 20 then
there's nothing at all stopping anyone from using the software if they
see fit though that may mean that the software won't be able to play any
audio/video formats that come our way in the future.

As I said, much ado about nothing and Joy To The World come December
20, so fitting that this event is so close to Christmas Day smile.

Re: Subscription music - do you bother shopping around?

2013-10-26 Thread Dave Scrimenti
Rhapsody works well. You can get it for only $5 per month, but you can't use
it on a mobile device at that price. And there's a set of Jaws scripts
called Rhapsody Blind that improves access in the Rhapsody application. If
you like classical, Naxos Music Library also works. It unfortunately uses
Flash, but is navigable. One problem for those of us in the US is we can't
listen to recordings made before 1972 on Naxos. Naxos has a plan for just
$20 a year, but it includes far fewer albums than the regular Naxos Music
Library. Also, you have to start each song individually. You can't just
listen to a whole album without physically starting each song.

Hi!

This article is from an Australian writer but I wouldn't mind betting that
the conditions he describes are duplicated in other countries.

I've been using Spotify for the last year and have been - on the whole -
very happy with the service, I have a premium account.

My only annoyance with the service is that I can't use it on a Windows or
Mac machine as the Spotify software - last time I tried it - was
completely inaccessible so I use Spotify in other ways, _ I can use it on
my Raspberry Pi using XBMC, can use it from my Denon AVR2113 Receiver or
from the Spotify App on my IOS devices, I've not tried the Spotify App for
Android as yet -.

The article linked to here talks about shopping around for other services,
I tried the Rdio service mentioned in the article but didn't get too far
with it, has anyone had any success with Rdio or any other subscription
based services?

Hi,

I have acquired some music which has been ripped to 1 single flac file for
each disc.

There is however a cue file accompanying each of the flac files.

Could anyone recommend a program which could split the files in to
individual tracks using the associated cue files.

Many thanks, and best regards.

Re: Music on the Go

2013-10-23 Thread Dave Scrimenti
If you already have an iPhone, why do you need something else? Put your
music on the cloud if there isn't room on the iPhone. I have a Western
Digital My Book Live network hard drive that's easily accessible with an
iDevice. They're available in 1, 2, or 3 TB. You can put everything on that
drive and access it with your iPhone. And it makes a great backup drive as
well. I don't like iTunes either. But you can't plug an iPod in to your PC
and treat it like an external drive. You have to use iTunes, or maybe go
through ftp or something.

I have an I phone for work with limited music on it.

I also have a Book Sense that sometimes play music on.

Unfortuantley the quality on the book sense is poor compared to the I

So that leads me to think about buying a second hand I pod even though I

not an I tunes fan.

A couple of questions please

What generation did I pods become accessible i.e Voice Over and are they
all

touch screens.

Can I just connect an I pod to my PC and copy and paste music into it

Is there an alternative good sound accessible unit that I will get 2nd

Thanks for your help

Metro Version Of Skype

2013-10-17 Thread Dave Marthouse
I've upgraded to Windows8.1 from Windows8. The upgrade went smoothly.

There is one related problem. GWConnect won't work with Windows8.1. It
seems that according to the folks at GWMicro that Skype hasn't released a
fix to make the Skypekit work with the os. GWMicro has informed Skype of
the problem but so far no joy from Skype.

I am now attempting to use the so called Modern Metro version of Skype
native to Windows8.1. I was able to sign in. I see my contacts but can't
find a method of calling them. I press enter on the names and it does no
good. I can't find any pull down menus or call buttons etc. I am using JFW
beta version 15.4.
Can anyone shed some light on this one?

The native Skype that comes bundled with Windows is there. The Skypekit
from Skype according to GWMicro hasn't been updated. GWMicro has notified
Skype about this. That's why I am attempting to use the native version of
Skype. It seems till the problem is fixed GWConnect will be unusable with
Windows8.1. So for now if you want to continue using GWConnect don't
upgrade to Windows8.1 till the issue is fixed.
This is a bummer.

Re: YouTube Problem Fixed

2013-10-04 Thread Dave Scrimenti
I had to use NVDA. I couldn't fix it with Jaws. When you're on the page, hit
O, then hit enter. You can then use the up arrow key to turn up the volume.
Pressing the unmute button didn't work for me either, so I guess the problem
is that the volume is down.

Hi all

Unfortunately I did not follow this thread as I did not have this problem.

But now it has happened to me also!

My youtube seems to have been muted. I can find an unmute button but
there

is no way to activate it. Neither the space bar or the enter key works.
If I right click within the flash area and go to settings, I can also find
this unmute button but I find no way of activating it. If I route jaws to
pc to try and left click on it, the jaws cursor cannot find it!

Any help?

I was not able to do this in
jfw either. You can do it in NVDA. To turn the volume back up right click
on the flash area, use the up and down arrows to go to settings. Click on
settings. Then hit the up arrow and while playing a video you will hear the
volume rise. I hope this helps.

2013-10-04 Thread Dave Scrimenti
There might be a way to fix it with Jaws, but I didn't find one. Call FS,
they might know. At least NVDA is free so anyone can get it for moments like
this. And you don't even have to install it. You can just run it.

So if this happens (and if someone doesn't have NDVA) then I guess we're
just screwed? I haven't done anything with You Tube in the past several
days, but would be nice to know that (if this happens to me) there'd be a
workable solution as some of us just don't have someone with sight that we
can call on at the drop of a hat!

I used the up arrow to bring up the volume. I was using NVDA at the time.
It didn't seem to work with JFW15.

How did you bring up the volume? What did you hear? Which control? Which
screen reader are you using? Because I can find this volume to work here.
All your steps work except when it comes to increasing the volume up.

Hi Tom,

Just for emergencies it may be a good idea to download NVDA and have it
around for that purpose. The NVDA screenreader is free. You can get it at
http://www.nvaccess.org. Even if you use another screenreader as a primary
NVDA can coexist on your machine with no problem.

RE: YouTube Problem Fixed

2013-10-04 Thread Dave Marthouse
Hi Peter,

I assume in your case the volume would stay up. I had difficulty with that
do to the fact that in my attempts to fix the problem I messed around in a
few functions within Explorer10 and windows8 and disabled something. I was
able to bring that back to normal. I think those settings were just a
factor in my specific situation. In addition I went through so many
different settings before I fixed the problem that I don't remember my exact
steps that worked. I should have made a mental note of them but I was so
glad that the problem was fixed I just went on to my next project.

Hi Dave. I tried this and the volume did go up. How do I make sure the
volume stays up so I don't have to do this each and every time I play
something on YouTube? Thanks for any info on this.
