Re: Coppiing music from my brother's IPod?

2014-06-24 Thread Gary King

I don't think you can get the music off of his iPod by connecting it to your
computer. iTunes will complain that the iPod is synced to another library.

Your best bet, if you have access to a portable hard drive, would be to
connect it to his computer and copy the music from the iTunes Media folder.
There might also be music elsewhere on his computer that was imported into
iTunes that you would need to copy. Then you could connect the drive to
your computer and copy the music to your

hard drive.

Listers,

Plese tell me the best way to copy my brother's music which is on his
IPod,
one of THOSE THAT HAS A TOUCH SCREEN, I was thinking about just plugging
the
IPod in to my computer which has ITunes on it, and coppiing the music
THAT
WAY, AND when its finished downloding in to ITunes JUST COPY AND PASTE IT
WHERE I WANT? I don't want my brother to lose any of his music. He loves
it!

Thanks to all.

Do I recall correctly that some stand-alone players at one time required
special music CDs because the recording companies were trying to get a cut
from burning copies of CDs? Hope this isn't the case with the Sony.

Hi, Alexandra,

My Sony unit works very well. I listened to quite a bit of music today
with no problems.

It's only when I began using my new laptop to burn disks that this problem
occurred.

I will see if my supplier can send me samples of other disks so I can find
a brand which will play. It is fortunate that my clients can play their
disks, even though I cannot do so.

The Blaze EZ will have Bluetooth, but not the latest version. I hope it

control the BookSense from a headset. I've had trouble keeping a Bluetooth

The new generation of the Victor Reader Stream is priced at $369 in the US.
The features of the two devices are similar, or probably will be, after the
Blaze EZ is upgraded a few times. The major difference is that the Blaze EZ
has OCR, which is the reason for the big price tag.

Some procedures on the Blaze EZ won't be so easy to perform due to the lack
of a numeric keyboard. All input will be by selecting letters, numbers and
symbols from a grid. Well, I guess you only need to enter your network

inferior to a dedicated FM radio.

The only real reason I can think of that Hims Inc would

bother putting

one
of these into their products is because they can, a bit

like Tecsun

giving
you 3,000 memories into a radio, not because they

particularly serve any

practical purpose having that many, just because Tecsun

can do it.

Its the OCR and associated functionality that I would

think is more

appealing about this equipment than a FM radio.

Re: Recommendations for an audio book reader?

2013-10-01 Thread Gary King
I have all 3 devices. I purchased the New Generation Victor Reader Stream
in July. It hasn't been on the market long enough to judge how well it will
hold up over time.

I've had a Book Port Plus for 3 years and have had no trouble with it.

I purchased the BookSense when it was released 4 years ago. I have had the
same problems with this device as other users. The speaker and Lock Switch
both need replacement. The rattle in the speaker doesn't bother me too much
since I usually use a headset. Intermittent failures of the Lock Switch are
a bigger problem since they render the unit useless until I can persuade it
to unlock. Some day the switch will fail completely, and I will have to
send it off to Texas for repair.

As for the Bluetooth feature, I consider its implementation on the BookSense
XT to be rather poor since you can't control the unit from a headset. I've
also experienced Bluetooth disconnecting from my headset when audio is
paused for a few seconds.

Both the Book Port Plus and new Victor Reader Stream have wireless
capability. Both will be adding the ability to download books directly
without using a computer. This doesn't appear to include Audible books,
however.

All 3 devices play Audible books very well in my experience. I like
navigation a little better on the Book Port Plus and new Victor Reader
Stream with their dedicated navigation keys.

Ok, so at least now I've narroed my choices down to the Victor Stream or
Book Port Plus. Is there any audio demonstration available shocasing
either of these 2 devices? I'm curious if they've ever been put in a
head-to-head test to see which one faired better?

Right now it looks like they both do the same thing, but the Victor Stream
reader does seem to integrate the player more seemlessly with various book
sharing sites. That's what I really want. Don't want to have to keep
plugging and unplugging my reader to my PC to upload books to it. I want
it to have that ability built directly in via Wi-fi. Avoids any USb
connection issues for sure.

Wish there was a coupon or something available to reduce the price of both
devices. I would just shell out the money for both of them so I can test
them on my own.

I agree with Ken. Although what you need is a two in one out
mixer. A headphone amplifier most likely will have one input
 and two or more outputs.

Your idea of having an adaptor with two inputs and one output
might work, but it could damage one or both pieces of equipment.

 Hi, let me sugest this.
The best way is to get a head phone amplifier.
This arangment should only be used for inputs, because

The suggestions to use Windows Media Center with a TV tuner seem reasonable
until you do some research on this solution. Put DirecTV and Windows Media

Victor Reader Stream New Generation Review

2013-05-28 Thread Gary King
There is a review of the Victor Reader Stream (New Generation) in the April
2013 Issue of AccessWorld

http://www.afb.org/afbpress/pub.asp?DocID=aw1404toc

The review mentions a tone that is present on recordings made by the new Stream
in all recording formats. If anyone on the list owns the new Stream or has
heard recordings made by one, I would like to know how seriously this tone
degrades recordings.

I would also be interested to hear a longer sample of the Acapela speech used
in the new Stream than the sample on the Humanware web site. After putting up
with the mispronunciation issues in the Neospeech used in the BookSense for
nearly 4 years, I want to know what to expect from the new Stream when reading
various types of documents.

I am considering a purchase in the near future, and I don't want any bad
surprises if I decide to spend my $369.

Re: re audible

2013-05-06 Thread Gary King
As far as I can tell, the so-called accessible site is just a page that was
created as a work-around for the 3 items with the new submenus at the top of
the regular home page, namely, your greeting, Library, and Shop Audible.
The accessible page displays the links that you would find on these submenus
if they worked consistently with your screen reader. Unfortunately, these
submenus do not work consistently with a screen reader even when you follow
the spoken instructions. This is why it is necessary to use the accessible
page.

If you want to use all of the features of Audible though, you will need to
use both the regular home page and the accessible page, whichever works best
in a particular situation. Also, be aware that on the regular home page,
the My Library link is now shortened to Library; on some other Audible
pages, it is still displayed as My Library.

The only problems I've had with downloading books are slower download speeds
and quite a few stops and restarts. The Search For A Good Book edit box
on the regular home page usually finds what I'm searching for using the
title, key words or author.

Re: Mac Versus Windows

2013-03-15 Thread Gary King

Vicky,
I think it would depend on what program was used to create the documents and
what you wanted to do with the documents on each platform. From what I
understand, MS Office doesn't work on the Mac, but there are programs that
can read documents created by MS Word. What I'm not sure about is whether
these programs can modify documents and retain all of the formatting.

The one thing I haven't heard when listening to the many demonstrations of
the Mac is someone doing office work, i.e., performing complex tasks like
mail merge, creating and navigating tables and using styles in formatting
documents.

The only problem I can see with music is that you might need to do some
format conversion if some formats are not directly supported.

What program are you talking about? If power dvd, yeah it does. I think
starting from virsion 8 it could. One warning though, the new virsions
of

Power DVD aren't as accessible as the old ones. If VLC, I don't know. I
thought I heard it now did.

I like the program, but unless I'm missing something, it doesn't play the

Audio Software with Screen Reader Mode

Re: re sound taxi

2013-02-01 Thread Gary King

Brian,
Audible has responded to inquiries about support for the new Stream. They
say that it will be supported. I suspect that Audible considers it to be
just a new generation of a player that is already supported. While support
for the new Stream is good news, it would be even better if Audible would
make a commitment to support all new devices designed for people with
disabilities. I've already heard repeatedly on another list that everybody
should be using main-stream commercial devices and that the market for
specialty devices will soon be gone; don't need to hear all that again!

Nero 12 and Screen Readers

2012-11-22 Thread Gary King
Is anyone using Nero 12 with a screen reader? If the controls are not
standard, the menus are not readily accessible and the whole thing needs a lot
of mouse clicking, then the $35 price tag in the Black Friday deal is still too
high. I've already heard from one user that it is not as accessible as earlier
versions, so I suspect that Nero 12 has some of these faults. Any comments
from others who have tried it?

Subject: JAWS Scripts for Winamp?

Hey Guys, I'm helping my partner get her Winamp running and accessible. I
am not a JAWS user, (I use Window Eyes and the app that goes with it makes
Winamp run very accessibly for what I do with it), but Winamp doesn't seem
to be so accessible on her Windows 7 JAWS 13 system. I installed the
latest version of Winamp Pro, version 6.22, which is the same one I'm
using on my system. I can't seem to use the control tab to go from the
library to the main window and back again, among other problems. What I'd
like to know is are there still scripts for Winamp to make it more
accessible with JAWS? If so, how can I get them and how do I install them?
Or, are they already built in? I know that JAWS does come with some
scripts already set up by FS. But if the Winamp scripts are built in, how
do I make them run. They don't seem to be running now, or at least not
very well.

Thanks for any help.

Amazon Instant Video

2012-10-07 Thread Gary King
I'm starting my second year of Amazon Prime membership. I suspect I've already
gotten my money's worth in shipping charges, but I would like to get even more
value out of my membership by getting Amazon Instant Video to play on my PC.
Has anyone had success getting this to work?

I noticed a message on the GW Micro list that also mentioned the problem I'm
having. Apparently Amazon is using Flash to stream their videos, and screen
readers can't access the controls to play the stream.

If I can't get streaming on the PC to work, I may look into streaming on iOS
devices such as the iPad and Apple TV. Hopefully, this topic will show up on
one of the Apple Accessibility lists.

Subject: Re: 5.1 stereo amps to connect to a sound card

first off, to the best of my knowledge, a single stereo jack, or 2 RCA
plugs, are not going to carry a full 5.1 signal, as you would then be
asking

a stereo connection, normally for 2 speakers, to carry a 6 speaker signal,
which is what 5.1 is. it needs either 3 stereo jacks, 6 RCA plugs, or a
digital connection.

the only thing I can think of that comes reasonably close to what you are
looking for, is the logitech z-5500 speaker system.
it doesn't have all the ins and outs of a full home cinema amp, but does
have 2 digital inputs, an analog input on 3 stereo jacks, and it does have
a
single stereo jack input, which you could try using, but I personally
doubt

that you will get full 5.1 through it.
a few other points of this system are:
1. the controls and connections, are mounted on a remote wired pod, which
is

ideal if not a lot of space is available.
2. apart from the sub, the speakers are quite small, but still give a very
good sound.
and 3. apart from the sub, all other speakers can be stand or wall mounted
super easily, thanks to there swiveling stands.
it also has a remote control.
the only thing I had to say against the system, being a bit of an
audiophile, is that it could have been supplied with better quality
speaker

cable.
apart from that, it is a very good system for those who haven't got room
for, or who just don't want all the bells and whistles of a full home
cinema

amp.
for example, I got mine after a move gone wrong, when I had to downsize a
bit, but still wanted a decent 5.1 sound system for my tv. and like I
said,
apart from the not very good speaker cable supplied, which I changed, I
have

got no complaints.

hope this helps.

Hi all, can anyone recommend a good 5.1 amplifier to connect to a sound

with ehther a single 1/8 stereo output or preferably two RCA jacks.
Nothing

with a built in receiver or multiple inputs just a good high quality, high
power amplifier to compliment an average sound card.

I got the usual message that a license was downloaded now and I could play

Since then for some strange reason I am also unable to play streamed content

I know that NVDA doesn't use a mirror driver, and that's why I decided to
try it with the movie. I thought that Media Player would be happier with
that configuration. I do intend to try some other DVD players with that
particular movie and JAWS 13 since I want to use the OCR feature on the menu

I called Audible Customer Service this morning and posed the question about
access to my books after termination of membership. The lady assured me
that I would continue to have access to my books both on my computers and
portable devices. I would also be able to access My Library on AUDIBLE.COM.
Finally, I would be able to activate new devices, provided I did not go
beyond the limits they set. If one of my devices was no longer in
operation, I would be able to call them and get my device limit reset.

This information should reassure you and other subscribers that access to

I also like a pretty unique feature, recording wishlist. Use this to
record stations playing any tracks by a certain artist, or vice versa.
It's in the recording menu. You add the artist(s) or track(s) you want.
Any station playing what you have added will be recorded. Good or what!

In Windows Media Center, you can use the Applications Key on your computer
to go into Settings and change TV audio to SAP. Of course, you may get a
second language instead of audio description.

In WMC, Control+Shift+a is supposed to change audio tracks in the DVD
section of the program. I'm not sure if it also works in the TV section.

See, this right here is yet another example of what I meant, what if you
want to access it with WMC, how would you do it? They have a button on
their

remote, and that's the key, their remote. What if you don't want to use a
regular TV? That's where I guess I was the first to go in too deep, and I
guess I caused people to leave. I'm just saying, for those that still
wander, this is the kind of thing that I kind of got a funny feeling might
be too much, but I wasn't sure how far is too far. The guid lines didn't
really talk about that kind of thing.

Yes, DirecTV does carry the audio description. I watched a described
version of the Wizard of Oz during the holidays. The Turner channels seem
to have the most audio described programs. TNT and the Turner Classic
Movies are your best bets. You would probably need to check the manual for
the specific receiver you have to see how to access Secondary audio.

Hopefully, we will have more audio description later this year when the FCC
mandate goes into effect in July. Unfortunately, it only calls for 50 hours
of audio described programming from each network per quarter. We shall see
how much difference that makes!

Re: TV on computer list, unsuccessful

2012-01-05 Thread Gary King
I would say that TV on the computer is a closely related subject. It can be
either fairly simple or complex. Once set up, Media Center on a Windows 7
system and a TV tuner connected to an antenna works well to record
over-the-air TV, and is simple to use. If you try to do the same task with
a cable or satellite provider with Media Center on a computer, it can get
quite complex. I Googled DirecTV and Media Center this morning, and a lot
of sighted folks were having trouble getting that combination to work
together. It's probably the same for cable connections.

A separate list may be better for discussions of TV on the computer, but
there needs to be enough interest to get a list going and folks with some
level of expertise about the subject.

I would think graphics cards are pretty clearly on topic, although I can
see where you might get so specific and so deep that the discussion
would only be of interest to a few people.

I would also think that accessing your cable companies DVR or streams
from your PC would also be on topic, but I could see where you could
easily get into the merits of one cable company over the other, which
would clearly be off topic.

BTW, I applaud your sensitivity to keeping discussions on topic!

Are you saying Tom, that 5 people left the list specifically because of
the cable TV thread? I'm kind of surprised someone would leave the list
for a thread I didn't even realize was going on. I guess people have
different levels of sensitivity. I also wonder how interested those
people were in the list to begin with if they left because of one thread
which may have strayed off topic.

BTW, here's the information I got when I subscribed to the list as far
as what the list is for. I just offer this for informational purposes. I
don't have any comments on it, other than I think it looks good, and I
like the ban on test messages!

Welcome to the Pc-audio@pc-audio.org mailing list! Welcome to the

should save it for later reference, as it contains important
information about this group, such as your password, how to change
your preferences, and a few basic rules of conduct we expect all
members to observe.

Attention! Do NOT send a test message to the list or you will not be
subscribed very long!

Guidelines.

PC-audio is a list for the discussion of any PC audio related topic
such as PC audio software like sound editors, audio players and audio
formats; and hardware like sound cards, CD and DVD devices and so on.

While the subject matter is wide ranging, this is not a forum for the
discussion of non-pc-audio matters. There are many other lists for
political or other discussions.

There are also some PC audio related topics which are specifically
excluded from the allowable topics. The explicitly prohibited topics
include:

* requests for songs or other audio files * promotion of audio streams
except for occasional announcements of special events * advertising
audio products and service Willfully posting an off-topic message is
strictly prohibited. While it may be considered that one or two
messages that are off topic can't hurt, if everyone on a large list
like this took that approach, we would quickly descend into chaos.
Asking for replies to be sent privately makes no difference.

Some examples of off-topic messages include:

* Virus alerts * Jokes and humor * Advertising items for sale * Test
messages * Non-audio software and hardware

Re: over the air tv on a win 7 machine?

2012-01-03 Thread Gary King

Vicky,
I am using an AVerTV Hybrid Volar MAX TV Tuner Kit that I ordered from
amazon.com. It is a USB tuner that I use on my Windows 7 Home Premium
64-bit computer to receive free over-the-air signals with an antenna. I
don't have access to cable TV here. I can get all of my local channels and
one channel from about 70 miles away. If I can get a little better antenna,
I should be able to get the other channels that are available at the same
distance.

Once I got Media Center set up using the NVDA screen reader, which worked
the best but not perfectly with the setup, both JAWS and Window-Eyes work
well with it. I can schedule recordings of single programs or of series. I
can also rewind live TV just like I would with a DVR. It's also nice to be
able to read the Program Guide in Media Center rather than having to look up
TV listings on the Internet.

Gary, This is Vicky. I had thought to work with a TV tuner in my new

will only be able to work this with one of their cards, which I will be

Mary,
In my previous post, I said that I didn't have any experience setting up
Media Center in Windows 7; now I do. Sighted assistance would definitely
be preferred, but if none is available, I would suggest that the NVDA
screen reader would be the best choice for tackling the setup screens. I
didn't get anything with Window-Eyes. the OCR in JAWS for Windows 13 did
give me some usable text, but having to Use OCR on every screen gets
rather tedious. NVDA seems to read the setup screens pretty well, but you
do need to know how to get it to speak the necessary information.

Once set up, you can use your screen reader of choice to access the
Program Guide. I just press Spacebar to get a particular channel in the
Guide to play or pause. Page Up and Page Down can be used to change
channels.

I'm enjoying having TV on my computer. I'll have to check out the
recording features next.

Mary,
I got the

AVerTV Hybrid Volar MAX TV Tuner Kit

from AMAZON.COM. It's a USB tuner, and it includes a short extension cable.
I also bought the remote for use with Media Center that was mentioned on the
same page. It turned out to have a lot more buttons than I need or want. I
may not use it.

Windows 7 installed the drivers for the tuner, and then it was just a matter
of setting up Media Center. No software came with the tuner, and none is
needed if you use Media Center.

Dain,
Did your JamBox come with the Live Audio update installed? The one I

Audio Mode, but nothing happened.

I then went to the web site and installed the JawBone Updater. This program
opens the update page, and I found that the free NVDA screen reader seemed
to work a little better than either JFW or Window-Eyes on this page. After
updating, Live Audio was impressive for its ability to spread the stereo
effect from such a small speaker. Of course, for Live Audio to work

Dain,
I'm sure there's information on the JamBox update page that tells how to

Carter's review at

http://robertcarter.posterous.com/

Live Audio Mode only works when connected via Bluetooth. If the update is
installed, the speech in the JamBox announces Live Audio when you hold both
volume controls down for a couple of seconds,, and you will hear the stereo
effect expand.

Tom,
The QT Support App must be installed to make Tapin Radio work with
Window-Eyes. Tapin Radio works well with both versions 12 and 13 of JAWS
for Windows since it has built-in QT support. I'm not sure about earlier
versions of JFW and Tapin Radio.

Watching Streaming Video from Amazon

2011-11-05 Thread Gary King
As a Prime member at AMAZON.COM, I am eligible to watch Instant streaming
video. My 1.5 MB DSL connection is slow, but it is above their minimum
specs. I've tried with both Internet Explorer and Firefox, but the video
never starts playing, even after more than the specified waiting time. I
have the latest Flash Player installed in both browsers.

After writing to their Tech Support about the problem, I was invited to call
to get real-time support. Having done that with sighted tech reps before, I
doubt it would help. Do you see the graphic of the jet airplane near the
top of the screen? Just click that, and the movie will start playing.

I am wondering if anyone on the list has tried watching streaming videos
from AMAZON.COM. I would definitely like to watch some of these TV shows
and movies, as it would add to the value of Amazon Prime.

Amazon Prime is now also giving their members the opportunity to borrow
books to read on their Kindles. Unfortunately, the books can't be read with
Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plug-in.

PlexTalk Pocket The Only One -Really?

2011-06-29 Thread Gary King
Freedom Scientific sent out a news release today stating that they will be
distributing the PlexTalk Pocket. Unfortunately, in this news release, they
claim the PlexTalk Pocket is the only one that has Wi-Fi, the only one that is
a portable DAISY recorder and the only one that has an accessible level meter.
They seem to have conveniently forgotten about the Book Port Plus from the
American Printing House, which also has these features. While the Book Port
Plus is built on the same hardware as the PlexTalk Pocket, it is using firmware
written by APH and is sold under a different brand name. FS should be able to
recognize another company's brand name; they have defended theirs often enough.

I don't know if APH will challenge these claims by FS, but hopefully, potential
customers will learn all of the facts before they make a purchase.

A thousand percent agreeance with this technique. I used to keep a
cheap pocket AM radio on me for just these purposes. People used to
think I'd lost it! Then I actually did--lost the radio, that is,
never found another to replace it. Guess they don't make those things
much any more. You can figure out some amazing things by listening to
those noises. Like whether a PC has crashed or frozen or has just
lost speech but is otherwise operating, or even when the picture on
your TV set has gone wonky.

Hi!

Now this tip isn't going to be for everyone as not everyone wears hearing
instruments which can be used with induction loops but if you do? Well
here's a handy way to use your instruments to great effect when sorting
out

one of the very few functions of the Zoom H1 which isn't accessible.

I'm talking about the Bit and Sample rate of the file you're recording,
this

is changed in Standby mode by using the fast forward and rewind buttons,
rewind takes you back through the cycle whilst fast forward takes you
forward through the cycle of bit and sample rates.

When recording using Wave Broadcast format you cycle through 44.1KHZ 16
Bit,

48KHZ 24 bit and so on right the way up to 96KHZ 24 and back to 44.1KHZ 16
bit so how to tell where you are.

Well turn your instruments to pick up induction loops and put the recorder
near them. Now start recording, you'll be able to hear the recorder as it
writes to the SD card and the slower the rate of writing then the small
the

sample size, 44.1KHZ 16 bit has the Zoom H1 writing to the SD card about
every half second whilst 96KHZ 24 bit has the H1 writing to the SD card
every sixth of a second or so.

Just thought others may find this helpful as I do, still haven't worked
out

a way to set the date and time for date/time stamping of recordings but I
have to admit to not trying too hard, after all! one can change all that
when the files are copied from the H1 to your computer.

One of the things I'm very much looking forward to this week is the
arrival of my Apple TV, I'm sure others will write pieces on this multi
media device in due course along with myself, I'll be making reference to
it often on my TTwitter and I'll be doing various reviews of it on my
blog.

In short this device which is around 3 inches square allows the streaming
of media from Itunes computers or other compatible devices on your
network, Youtunes videos, Netflicks, etc to your TV or an audio device
through the Optical digital or HDMI connections on the device, you control
what you hear with a remote control, not unlike that which used to come as
standard with the Apple Imac and Macbook computers.

Apple TV now supports accessibility through Voiceover so - once set up - a
blind person can browse their media library and so on deciding what to
hear.

Apple TV is a media receiver that you connect to your HD TV or home theater
system. It allows you to watch or listen to the contents of your iTunes

and the titles of the movies and TV episodes that you select to be played

You can go to blindbargains.com where you will find a link to an article in

Inaccessible Blio eReader Released

2010-09-28 Thread Gary King
K-NFB Reading Technology, a company which you would think should have the
blind as their highest priority, has released the long-awaited Blio eReader

would bring access to a million books to blind readers, K-NFB Reading
Technology, a joint venture of the National Federation of the Blind and

not accessible to screen readers. They promise on the download page that an
accessible version of Blio will be available in October, but they've missed
so many release dates, I'll believe it when it happens. How can we expect
companies to release accessible software from day one when a company in
which one of the partners is a national blindness organization doesn't even
follow this principle?

To make matters worse, I just got an email message from K-NFB Reading

eReader. It reminds me of all of those messages from AMAZON.COM about the

Re: Veronica FM transmitter

2010-06-26 Thread Gary King
The unit described below is the one I bought from Wavemach Communications
for Christmas a couple of years ago. I can transmit music to my Bose Wave
Music System at the other end of the house or take a portable radio outside.
The sound is great. I can adjust the input level with a knob on the back if
necessary. I am still using the rubber duck antenna since the transmitter
covers the part of my yard where I use my radio. I have noticed some slight
fading at around 200 feet from the unit when walking with a portable radio,
but I still get full quieting in hot spots at that distance. The remote for
changing frequencies is very nice, but wouldn't strictly be necessary since
normally, once you find a clear frequency, there's no need to change it. I
paid around $360 at that time.

Actually, the windows operating system was developed in 1982.
But it didn't gain its foot hold until early 1991.
But the music didn't ketch up to it until 1994 which is, when Microsoft put

We've been ripping and burning CD's on our computers since then.

Hello all list members,
I'm gonna try to explain how your USB ports work.
And in the process of this, I'm also try to put away allot of
misconceptions and myths about it.
In 1986, the USB port was developed to transmit and receive digital
information or if you will, data from the computer to other digital
devices such as, printers scanners and fax machines.

All of these devices usually have their own power supplies.
Even though, 1.5 volts is needed to open up the data ports that are built
in to the devices, the devices themselves, aren't powered by the USB
ports.
These days, the USB ports are used to open up the data ports on memory
chips that are built in to storage devices such as, thumb drives external
hard drives and MP3 players and IPods.
As I said in an earlier post, your lab top and desk top computers have 12
volt power supplies powering them.
In some electronic equipment, there are power/currant limiting resisters
to reduce the voltage to what the engineer desires.

But inside your computers, there is a chip that does a triple job.
This chip cuts the high voltage down to what the storage devices can
handle which is, 1.5 volts in to 135 MA.

This chip also handles the transmitting and the receiving of data.
This is why we're able to transfer audio/video files to our MP3 players
and IPods.
The same thing is also true about transferring pictures from digital
cameras to our computers.

The USB port was never mint to power devices alone.
But in order to make the USB port a viable power supply, a couple of
changes will have to be made.
First, the voltage will have to be razed from 1.5 volts to pretty close to
what the computers power supply is delivering.

Next, the currant will have to be razed from 135 MA to about 1500 MA.
But if we do this, the storage devices will overload and burn out.
unless, you increase their capacity too as well.
I hope I clarified the way your USB ports work.
My best regards.
 John.

Re: getting speech on my ipod

2010-06-02 Thread Gary King

Robert,
If you have the 4th Generation iPod Nano, you can use iTunes to send voice
clips to it that will speak the menus, folders and tracks. This doesn't
give you a true screen reader like VoiceOver on the iPhone and iPod Touch,
but may do what you want. Rockbox has also been mentioned, and it works in
a similar fashion, using recorded voice clips to speak menus, folders and
tracks; but replaces the firmware of the iPod, making it no longer a true
iPod. If you decided to go with Rockbox, you would need to see if it
supported the iPod model you have.

Surprise Audible Sale

2010-05-12 Thread Gary King
I don't know if this sale applies to all Audible subscribers, but it might
be good to take a look.

I renewed my subscription to Science News today, and then I went to my
library on AUDIBLE.COM to download the latest issues. I saw an
announcement of a Surprise $4.95 Sale. Investigating further, I found a
link to the list of books that were on sale, a rather short list,
unfortunately. I also ran across a warning that the sale would close as
soon as I closed my browser. Since I like history, I purchased a book by
Winston Churchill about World War II.

Just thought I'd pass this along for what it's worth. Hope you find the
sale and get something you like! Try searching for sale and see what you
find.

Joe,
From your description of what happened when you tried to download a book, I
suspect you haven't downloaded the Audible Manager software to your
computer. Once you've done that and installed it, Audible Manager will take
care of downloading your books and placing them in a Library list in the
program. You should be able to find Audible Manager for your operating

Subject: Hardware Synthesizers with Jaws 64 bit Windows

In my business I do quite a bit of sound editing and always prefer to
separate my screen reader voice, routing it to the dry and almost toneless
output of a hardware synthesizer. I've made a considerable investment in
several hardware synthesizers including both the PCI and external versions
of the TripleTalk from Access Solutions. Within the last several months I
installed a new PC running Windows 7 64 bit in my sound booth and was
quite

disappointed that Jaws for the 64 bit environment did not include drivers
for any hardware synthesizers. At that point I contacted Mike Cozzolino of
Access Solutions who agreed to begin work on the development of 64 bit
drivers for the TripleTalk series.

He quickly developed drivers to work with Window Eyes but has had little
cooperation from Freedom Scientific in his efforts to develop drivers for
Jaws. My question is whether anyone knows how and whom to contact at SF to
try and get some movement on the issue? I've written to support, but
received responses which told me what I already know, that at present
there
is no support for hardware synthesizers, which was my initial point. Here
we

have a vendor willing to invest the time and money to continue offering to
support a product, and I would sincerely hope that SF would feel the same.
I

would be very disappointed as well to lose my investment in these hardware
synthesizers.

The difference will be in the features that APH decides to include in their

Free E-Books

2010-03-07 Thread Gary King
While looking around for news about the Blio eReader, which apparently will
not be released until late April, I found a press release about Read An
E-Book Week, which mentioned free e-books. Free is good! That's what I
always say. So I went to

ebookweek.com

and found some interesting articles and some links to free e-books in
various categories. Since I like Sci-Fi, the 2 books I've downloaded so far
are in that category. There are a number of different formats, but I chose
RTF since it can be read by MS Word and other word processors or be easily
converted to other formats. I'm not sure which of the other formats listed
for these books are accessible either on the PC or on a phone.

Read An E-Book Week starts today, so get them this week while they are free!

The old version of audible manager and goldwave will still work but there
are 2 conditions-

1. the old version of audible manager must be the only version of audible
manager on the computer.

2. the files must be in the normal format, i.e., 1 through 4 etc. The new
format audible is promoting can't be decoded (that figures, doesn't it?)

What doesn't work is that you can't download using the old version of
audible.

That means that you will have to download the files on one computer using
the newer version of audible manager and set up the old version of audible
manager on a second computer and transfer the files to that computer to be
decoded.

It is an annoyingly cumbersome process but it is doable and you get the
best

sound quality possible using goldwave.

It used to be that you could download an Audible file using an old version
of Audible Manager, and then decode it using Goldwave.
I don't think that old version of Audible Manager works any more, so I was
wondering if there is still a way to decode these files.

iTunes Store Music Format

2009-12-13 Thread Gary King
I would like to rip some CDs and convert some of my Windows Media Lossless
music tracks to the same format and quality as the music purchased from the
iTunes Store. I plan to transfer the music to my new iPod Touch 64GB on
Christmas morning. Can anyone tell me what format and bit-rate they use for
their music downloads?

How do I know I am getting a new iPod Touch 64GB for Christmas? Because I
didn't take any chances and bought it for myself, that's how!

It is certainly conceivable that you don't care about the sound coming out
of your card; that is your affair. I, however, do and yes, I want and yes
expect that I will be able to access what I paid for. Clearly you don't
have an answer to contribute and that's ok. Equaly clearly you haven't
been

reading this thread because I'm not the only one who has been having
difficulties with Creative. I am willing, however, to stand up and say
that
we need access to what we pay for just as our seeing counterparts do. It
is
my obligation and my right to warn people against making the mistakes that
I

have.

Now I notice that happy as you are with this card, you have made no effort
to discuss whatever workarounds you may have established, which leads me
to
believe that you are just using the card in its flat default response.
This
is your privilege, but I want at least the ability to get some treble out
of
the high end. Since this appears to be too much to ask, I am now asking
for
alternatives and chosing to walk away from this company, which I find to
be

entirely unresponsive.

Tom,
I guess that depends on how you look at it, or in this case listen to it.
Since it's a language learning program, I'm sure at least part of it is
audio. It would be rather difficult to learn a language without hearing it.

I've always wondered about this program as well. It's quite expensive, and

nice

Just wondering, which one of the flash memory based recorders recently

I don't intend recording via microphone, so that particular aspect of

Re: Talks question

2009-08-27 Thread Gary King

Lauren,
From reading through the text version of the manual that Verizon posted
online, it seems to be a fully functional version of Talks for Windows
Mobile, and it would probably do everything you want, including text
messaging, email and Internet. However, if you look at the answer to
question 3 on the Answers page that I sent the link for, you will hear the
word nontransferable in the answer about the cost. This makes me think
that the $99 price is just for a Talks license for this phone and cannot be
transferred to another phone later.

Mobile Speaks has a higher initial cost, but it can be transferred to a new
phone when a better one comes along.

If you have the Blackberry Tour 9630, you can wait for Orator for Blackberry
to be released by Humanware. They say it will be released soon, but they
don't say when, and they don't give a price. They say it will support all
of the core Blackberry applications. This is the only Blackberry model they
mention specifically in the information on their web site.

The Talks cost $99; the Mobile Speaks, does it allow you to do everything

Subject: RE: Talks question

Good morning List,

Here is the promised information.

A few months ago I started hearing talk of a Smart Phone that was fully
accessible to blind people. This phone was from Verizon and contained
the Talks program. The phone was a Motorola Q-9C and with the speech
program cost $249 with a 2 year contract. According to Verizon, the
Moto phone was the only one they offered that would do this. Of course
I was eager to have a phone that would allow me complete access to all
it had to offer. I was currently using the Env 2 and I could read and
compose text messages, but as far as simple things like setting an alarm
or leaving myself a note, and many other things, it just wouldn't
happen.

I purchased the phone and found it to work fairly well, but it had a few
issues. It came with Pocket Word that wasn't accessible with the Talks
program. This left me a bit frustrated because I wanted full use of all
the features of this phone, and so I began to inquire of other types of
phones and different speech programs. Through my searching, I
discovered that the Talks program Verizon sells and on the Moto phone
was not the fully functioning version of the program.

I was able to return the Moto Q to Verizon for a full refund after
hearing of a program called: Mobile Speaks. This program can be used
on Smart Phones running Windows Mobile along with Pocket PC's. It works
with several different service providers and costs about $300.00. I was
able to purchase the Moto Q-9C from an individual and used the Mobile
Speaks program for a 30-day trial to make sure I liked all it had to
offer. This program works great, and I'm able to use features on a
different new phone I've purchased which is called the Ozone from
Verizon. I kept the Moto to use as a spare, but I wanted a brand-new
phone.

Since all of this, I found out that the Talks program, like Mobile
Speaks is a fully functioning program, but doesn't work with as many
smart phones and with as many carriers.

I might also point out that when you purchase a Smart Phone from Verizon
that has come out after November of last year, that you must have a Data
package with your current plan. A Data package gives you access to the
Internet and E-mail from your phone. This is not meant for everyone,
but if you think there might be a reason for this function, then a
Windows Mobile device running a speech program might be what you need.

If anyone has any questions, they can keep the thread going on this list
or contact me off list at:

tim.mar...@state.nm.us

Here is the link to where you can get a trial of the Mobile Speaks
software.
