If you want small and convenient, there are too recent releases: The DM-720 which is focused on voice recordings, with quite a few features and not bad sound; and The Ls-P2 which is nearly as small as the 720 and 520 and 620 but supports 96/24 and has 90 degrees XY mics plus the central Tri-mic for bass. Both support setting time and date independently. The LS-p2 is not fantastic as a quality field recorder, with some boom eq issues around mid bass, but for its size and the Voice Guidance, its worth looking at. I haven't done much testing with external mics, but suspect it will be pretty good in that regard. If you knew the DM-7, then this is similar format and better quality. Sadly it only has one bass roll off level, that is too aggressive for my tastes. If you have to choose between the DM-720 and the LS-P2, the 720 is quite a nice note-taking device, and substantially less expensive than the LS-P2 Another benefit of the LS-P2 is that it supports output to Bluetooth speakers and headphones, but the implementation is not very good - for example it only seems to pair with one device at a time, and I couldn't get it working with my Air Pods. The Dm-720 isn't bad either. Again, it depends on what you want. Sonos Connect AMP.
Hi Gang: I've been looking at Sonos equipment and, I am very impressed with the connectivity to music services and the accessibility of the Sonos app. I am, however, at a loss as to why the Sonos system would be considered as a serious first line stereo system in the home. Even though the Play:5 is a remarkable speaker system, it is, after all, still a portable speaker. I can certainly see the awesome value in a Sonos Connect being utilized on an existing stereo system: which brings me to my point. I have an old HarmonCarton 5.1 amplifier and I would like to replace it. Therefore, what is the good, the bad, and the ugly, concerning the Sonos Connect Amplifier. BTW: are most of you Sonos owners using the sub-woofer? Thanks all over the place gang.

If you take the other approach - say buy an Amplifier without the bells and whistles this one has - and by some extra equipment such as the Sonos Connect you're going to - not only get better bang for your buck - but also far better sound. There are many good performing budget priced amplifiers out there from the likes of Rotel, Marantz etc that sound very nice, indeed I've spoken about my Rotel RA-10 often here, that's a very basic budget priced Amp but the sound from that is truly amazing. The RA-10 sounds nice with just about anything you'd like to connect to it, a Sonos Connect would sound glorious through the RA-10. The TX-8140 has a few streaming services but you'll get far more choice of streaming and Music Subscription services with a Sonos connect or something similar. And finally taking the approach of having multiple devices means that you can upgrade your sound over time. The TX-8140 for example - whilst it can play digital sources - doesn't have an outstanding DAC - Digital To Analogue Converter - but with my RA-!0 I added a DAC to the system to improve the quality of sound yet again. Anyway something to think about and my two cents worth on the topic. I've had the Rotel now for just over 3 years. I tried the Windows desktop software and it sort of works, you can get to where you want using the JAWS Cursor or Mouse Pointer in Window-Eyes for example but its all a bit of a pain thus I certainly prefer the IOS app. Anyway was wondering if its possible to create Radio Stations playing your favourite tracks and how is that done if it can be? Sure I saw something about this mentioned. Re: Totle Recorder verses GoldWave?
Just to add to Joes excelent comontary: GoldWave also supports keyboard mapping to pretty well all functions of the program. Cheers. - Original Message - From: Joe Paton j...@vi-ability.demon.co.uk To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Monday, July 04, 2011 12:08 PM Subject: Re: Totle Recorder verses GoldWave? Carlos, Ok. Think about what you want to do. Obviously you want to record, using the PC. You'll want the most input resources available to you. Line-in, stereo mix, .wav and whatever else your sound card supports. Capturing the audio, in which ever form, can be done by most recording software, that is not the end of the matter. You might need or want, or have to edit some recordings. For most processes, goldwave has full keyboard support, and integrates with most major screen readers to a greater or lesser extent; I.E there may be scripts or setfiles to improve access, but these are not necessary when you understand the audio software you are running and have a good working knowledge of the screen reader in use. If itr's straight recording, with little edditing, then mp3 direct cut will facilitate the recording of audio with .mp3 files as the output file format. This is free, but cutting, copying, pasting, equalizing only the volume fading in/out is just about it with mp3 direct cut. but it's fairly straight forward, and will capture and save audio. Goldwave, Sound forge, record all and total recorder are but a few audio editing packages which give reasonable access . The goldwave dev. team are always responsive to the needs of screen reader/magnifier users, and will take on board, then modify or repair elements if they are broken, or just not accessible; That is worth paying fifty or sixty canadian dollars for in my opinion. Sony's sound forge, although you didn't mention this, is extremely powerful, and is the highest price tag. In earlier versions, care needed to be taken with the total recorder drivers, because they conflicted or isolated other required sound drivers. This was not difficult to fix, but caught a few of us on the hop when things that used to work no longer worked. This issue may have been resolved for further stable releases of the software, other list contributors can confirm or not this situation. If however you want to multi track record, then probably up for consideration must be the Reaper multi track recorder; This is where there are say a drum track, then a bass track, keyboard track, main vocal track and say 3 harmony vocals. So you can then play and edit each of these 7 audio source tracks till you have what you want, then mix them together, and save the project down to an audio file format. Reaper is not free, but I think the rae pluggin for better access is. This is also a considerable learning curve, so be prepared to listen to pod casts, and read the manual. Going back to goldwave, the manual is brilliant. In .html format, navigation and searching and locating results is a breeze when you understand your web browser and how to use the screen reader for navigating .html documents. Audacity is free I think, I don't have much experience of this though. sorry this is a little sketchey. Just some thoughts for you, and good luck. I'm thinking of opening the wireless network so that I can make the setup for my sighted help easier, that way a password won't have to be entered so therefore I'll change it back to how it was when the setup is completed if I can access the network options of the Squeezebox Boom from its HTML interface, anyone any comment? Re: Squeezebox Boom
Dane: There are two ways to access content from the Boom: 1. You can connect to Squeezebox.com and access content which is generated from their site. 2. You can download and install the Squeezebox server to your computer (either Mac or Pc), in which case, you have the same functionality as you would using Squeezebox.com plus the fact that you can access the content on your own harddrive. In short, you can use either their online server or your own server. Hope this helps. - Original Message - From: Dane Trethowan grtd...@internode.on.net To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, March 30, 2011 9:37 AM Subject: Re: Squeezebox Boom Okay, so what exactly does the squeezebox.com server do? Re: Accessible Internet Radio devices
Hello Again: Once you have the unit programmed via the PC or iPhone, you can save your stations in the available presets as well as sstore an unlimited number of stations in your favourites. As the setup of the radio is accessible through a web browser, you can then allow only the favourites on your menu screen. The big problem with this radio as that initially, you might require sighted help to set up the network settings. Re: Squeeze Box
Hello: The particular unit that I am referring to is called SqueezeBox Boom. The unit has 6 preset keys as well as other ways of storing stations. It has special plugins for accessing Radio Time, iTunes, and many other radio services. It's main strength is that, for the size of the unit, it has an exceptional sound quality and can be programmed by a Blind user via a PC. If one has an iPhone or iTouch, one can operate the radio with no restrictions. Hope this helps. - Original Message - From: Dane Trethowan grtd...@internode.on.net To: PC Audio Discussion List Pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Monday, March 28, 2011 1:42 PM Subject: Squeeze Box Hi! Re: Audio tutorial on Internet Broadcasting Now Available
Hi: I must be having a senior's moment but I am unable to find the links to the audio tutorials. Cheers. - Original Message - From: Jonathan Mosen jmo...@mosen.org To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Tuesday, June 01, 2010 1:42 AM Subject: Audio tutorial on Internet Broadcasting Now Available It's been asked for a lot over the years, and now, Mushroom FM has just published an audio tutorial on Internet broadcasting for screen reader users. If you think you have what it takes to join our team, but you're not sure how all this Internet broadcasting malarkey works, we can help you out. Jonathan Mosen and Brian Hartgen have developed The Mushroom FM Fun guys Guide to Internet Broadcasting. This is an audio tutorial that will help get you up and running. The tutorial runs for 3 hours 20 minutes, and covers things like: A detailed look at StationPlaylist Studio that shows how to set up and run this software in an Internet broadcast situation. You'll learn about the benefits of using a mixer, how to cope with requests, how to use cart machines and more. A look at options for getting your broadcast to the Internet, including using facilities within StationPlaylist Studio, using free Winamp tools, or the optional StationPlaylist Streamer. Using the Sam Encoders with soon to be released JAWS scripts to optimise your streaming experience. A session where you hear all the tools we've discussed in action as an actual radio show goes to air. A brief overview of StationPlaylist Creator and how it can be used to make live Internet broadcasting easier. The tutorial is available for free download in two formats. The DAISY version can be played using DAISY playback software on your PC, such as the free FSReader that is included with JAWS 11 and above. It can also be played on portable devices such as the Victor Reader Stream, Book Sense, Plextalk Pocket and Bookport Plus. The DAISY file is a little bigger to download, however the DAISY navigation makes moving between sections of the tutorial very easy. The MP3 version of the tutorial can be played on your PC or any MP3 capable device. Both tutorial files have identical content, they are only different formats. Both downloads are zip files. You can extract them using the built-in zip support in Windows. To get this free Internet broadcasting tutorial, just head on over to http://www.MushroomFM.com blocked::http://www.mushroomfm.com/ and choose the Become a Presenter link. We hope you find it helpful. Re: QuickTime Pro question.
Hello: You can, indeed, select which soundcard you want to use in the QuickTime preference options; however, it simply uses the Windows basic soundcard settings to perform that task. Thus, when you select a different soundcard, you simply switch Windows itself to that card. I don't know if QuickTime Pro will allow one to choose a different soundcard but I have not been able to find any information concerning that matter.
