If you want small and convenient, there are too recent releases:

The DM-720 which is focused on voice recordings, with quite a few features
and not bad sound; and

The Ls-P2 which is nearly as small as the 720 and 520 and 620 but supports
96/24 and has 90 degrees XY mics plus the central Tri-mic for bass.

Both support setting time and date independently.

The LS-p2 is not fantastic as a quality field recorder, with some boom eq
issues around mid bass, but for its size and the Voice Guidance, its worth
looking at. I haven't done much testing with external mics, but suspect it
will be pretty good in that regard.

If you knew the DM-7, then this is similar format and better quality.

Sadly it only has one bass roll off level, that is too aggressive for my
tastes.

If you have to choose between the DM-720 and the LS-P2, the 720 is quite a
nice note-taking device, and substantially less expensive than the LS-P2

Another benefit of the LS-P2 is that it supports output to Bluetooth
speakers and headphones, but the implementation is not very good - for
example it only seems to pair with one device at a time, and I couldn't get
it working with my Air Pods.

Regards
Tim

aren't concerned about phantom power, etc. The DM-620 is okay but is less
straightforward to operate. The Dm-720 isn't bad either. Again, it depends
on what you want. None of the recorders I've used let you set the time and
date by voice.

There are loads of them.

I had two Onkio av units and one broke down so I had that replaced with £750
Yamaha.
Don't know where you live, but I use Richard Sounds in Glasgow. They are a
great company and if you live in England, I'm sure they will post equipment

My new Yamaha which costs £750, I got for £450, simply because this company
care about their costomers, so check them out. They also have a special

Very best wishes.

Sonos Connect AMP.

2016-09-29 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hi Gang:

I've been looking at Sonos equipment and, I am very impressed with the
connectivity to music services and the accessibility of the Sonos app. I
am, however, at a loss as to why the Sonos system would be considered as a
serious first line stereo system in the home. Even though the Play:5 is a
remarkable speaker system, it is, after all, still a portable speaker.

I can certainly see the awesome value in a Sonos Connect being utilized on
an existing stereo system: which brings me to my point. I have an old
HarmonCarton 5.1 amplifier and I would like to replace it. Therefore, what
is the good, the bad, and the ugly, concerning the Sonos Connect Amplifier.

BTW: are most of you Sonos owners using the sub-woofer?

Subject: Re: Onkyo TX-8140 Network Stereo Receiver.

the TX-8140 is a practical piece of equipment, not what I'd be using
myself however if you want a feature packed box - and aren't so worried
about how everything sounds - then its a reasonable choice,.

If you take the other approach - say buy an Amplifier without the bells
and whistles this one has - and by some extra equipment such as the
Sonos Connect you're going to - not only get better bang for your buck -
but also far better sound.

There are many good performing budget priced amplifiers out there from
the likes of Rotel, Marantz etc that sound very nice, indeed I've spoken
about my Rotel RA-10 often here, that's a very basic budget priced Amp
but the sound from that is truly amazing.

The RA-10 sounds nice with just about anything you'd like to connect to
it, a Sonos Connect would sound glorious through the RA-10.

The TX-8140 has a few streaming services but you'll get far more choice
of streaming and Music Subscription services with a Sonos connect or
something similar.

And finally taking the approach of having multiple devices means that
you can upgrade your sound over time.

The TX-8140 for example - whilst it can play digital sources - doesn't
have an outstanding DAC - Digital To Analogue Converter - but with my
RA-!0 I added a DAC to the system to improve the quality of sound yet again.

Anyway something to think about and my two cents worth on the topic.

I've had the Rotel now for just over 3 years.

Hi folks!

Well its been one of those cold and miserable type Melbourne Winter days but
I haven't noticed the weather, too busy playing with Spotify, that service
is incredibly adictive and I've had to make sure I stop to eat smile.

Anyway thanks to other list members I've been able to work out a few basic
things like finding the tracks I want and manipulating playlists through the
iPhone app as that seems about the best way to access the Spotify service.

I tried the Windows desktop software and it sort of works, you can get to
where you want using the JAWS Cursor or Mouse Pointer in Window-Eyes for
example but its all a bit of a pain thus I certainly prefer the IOS app.

Anyway was wondering if its possible to create Radio Stations playing your
favourite tracks and how is that done if it can be? Sure I saw something
about this mentioned.

Hi I would like to find a good limiter for win amp.
So that when I am playing MP3 files I don't have to reach for the volume
and

turn it up and down.
While going from file to file because some are softer or louder then
others.

I am using windows 7 home if that helps any.
And if anyone can post where to get any of these limiter suggestions.
So I would have an idea where to get them.
that would be a big help.
Thank you all and have a nice day.

Jim

Does Iriver still make mp3 players I wonder or was the venerable h300 series
the last one?

They were remarkable for their time I think. Bulky yes but they did very
well especially regarding recording and playback. They also had
surprisingly good internal microphones while the noise of the internal hard
drive was negligible. But of course it did not have many of the fancy
functions of the Ipod series of players. It probably depended what you
wanted from such a machine. I would not be surprised if some folks still
use theres.

Smaller most definitely there is no doubt about that!

It's one of the only mp3 players around that has a line output for example.
And newer technology does not necessarily mean better sound quality in the
end. Would be interesting to do a straight comparison between the iriver
and my Nokia e52 which is reputed to have better sound quality than the
Apple range of devices.

Subject: Re: Totle Recorder verses GoldWave?

Carlos,

Ok. Think about what you want to do. Obviously you want to record, using
the PC. You'll want the most input resources available to you. Line-in,
stereo mix, .wav and whatever else your sound card supports.

Capturing the audio, in which ever form, can be done by most recording
software, that is not the end of the matter.

You might need or want, or have to edit some recordings. For most
processes, goldwave has full keyboard support, and integrates with most
major screen readers to a greater or lesser extent; I.E there may be
scripts or setfiles to improve access, but these are not necessary when
you understand the audio software you are running and have a good working
knowledge of the screen reader in use.

If itr's straight recording, with little edditing, then mp3 direct cut
will facilitate the recording of audio with .mp3 files as the output file
format. This is free, but cutting, copying, pasting, equalizing only the
volume fading in/out is just about it with mp3 direct cut. but it's
fairly straight forward, and will capture and save audio.

Goldwave, Sound forge, record all and total recorder are but a few audio
editing packages which give reasonable access .

The goldwave dev. team are always responsive to the needs of screen
reader/magnifier users, and will take on board, then modify or repair
elements if they are broken, or just not accessible; That is worth paying
fifty or sixty canadian dollars for in my opinion.

Sony's sound forge, although you didn't mention this, is extremely
powerful, and is the highest price tag.

In earlier versions, care needed to be taken with the total recorder
drivers, because they conflicted or isolated other required sound drivers.
This was not difficult to fix, but caught a few of us on the hop when
things that used to work no longer worked. This issue may have been
resolved for further stable releases of the software, other list
contributors can confirm or not this situation.

If however you want to multi track record, then probably up for
consideration must be the Reaper multi track recorder; This is where
there are say a drum track, then a bass track, keyboard track, main vocal
track and say 3 harmony vocals. So you can then play and edit each of
these 7 audio source tracks till you have what you want, then mix them
together, and save the project down to an audio file format.

Reaper is not free, but I think the rae pluggin for better access is.

This is also a considerable learning curve, so be prepared to listen to
pod casts, and read the manual.

Going back to goldwave, the manual is brilliant. In .html format,
navigation and searching and locating results is a breeze when you
understand your web browser and how to use the screen reader for
navigating .html documents.

Audacity is free I think, I don't have much experience of this though.
sorry this is a little sketchey.

Just some thoughts for you, and good luck.

Re: Amadeus Pro, Questions Concerning Major Update

2011-06-27 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Larry:

As a former user of GoldWave and SoundForge for the PC, I'm anything but
impressed. For example: I know of no way to move the playback head bassed
on the zoom in/out functions except to rout the playback head to the editing
cursor via Command-Shift-Y. Then again, I haven't been able to garner a
response to my questions concerning this matter. As it stands, editing,
with this program, appears to be a mainly visual thing supported by audio
rather than the other way around.

You might want to consider sound Studio.

For more than a year I've been using the Mac audio editor called Amadeus
Pro. Now, I understand that the program has gone through a major update to
version 2.0. The cost to update is $40, which is no problem, but before
spending the money I want to be certain that the updated program continues
to work extremely well with voiceover, as did the previous editions. Has
anyone purchased the update yet? If so, what do you think of it?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Hi!

Just been playing with a Super Duper Ipad app for a Squeezebox system
called Ipeng HD.

This app allows you to control just about every aspect you can possibly
think of regarding your Squeezebox system and when I say just about e
everything I mean exactly that, just about everything, you can even use
the app to switch one or more of your players to different sources and
until now the only way of doing that was to go to each player and switch
it from the menu.

By music sources I mean one or more Squeezebox servers or your My
Squeezebox account so being able to control this feature is a huge step
forward for me at least with the system.

Other people on this list use the Squeezebox system with various
Squeezebox players including Boom and Duet so they perhaps may wish to
comment further.

I've already written a piece on my experience with the Squeezebox Boom on
my blog at ,http://www.grtdane.wordpress.com and will be writing more
shortly.

Suppose I get help with setting the unit up through the Quick Start

I'm thinking of opening the wireless network so that I can make the setup

Re: Squeezebox Boom

2011-03-30 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Dane:

There are two ways to access content from the Boom:

1. You can connect to Squeezebox.com and access content which is generated
from their site.

2. You can download and install the Squeezebox server to your computer
(either Mac or Pc), in which case, you have the same functionality as you
would using Squeezebox.com plus the fact that you can access the content on
your own harddrive. In short, you can use either their online server or
your own server.

Hope this helps.

Obviously the user would have trouble setting the thing up due to the lack

anyone got any views or had any experience with this.

Obviously the user would have trouble setting the thing up due to the
lack of speech or other accessibility but just supposing you had
someone set the radio up to match your wi-fi network and they
programmed some presets for you, I can't see any reason why you
couldn't scroll through those presets up and down as you would with
some digitally controlled FM radios which have been readily available
for the last quarter of a century, anyone got any views or had any
experience with this.

I'm looking at buying a stand-alone Internet radio for the kitchen

vision then I won't be too worried, Ootunes on the Iphone and Ipad
does a damn good job but I don't want to be carrying them around with
me everywhere if I can avoid it.

I did think about the new Plextalk Pocket which is supposed to have
Internet Radio accessible on it however I think it will be quite some
time before we see anything out of that company, unfortunately the
whole company's location was destroyed in the recent Japan
earthquake.

Once you have the unit programmed via the PC or iPhone, you can save

As the setup of the radio is accessible through a web browser, you can
then allow only the favourites on your menu screen. The big problem
with this radio as that initially, you might require sighted help to
set up the network settings.

Hi Dane,

I have the jjSanyo r227 internet radio which I really like and think
it's great. As you say though, it does take a pair of eyes to do
any scanning or searching unfortunately. It has only eight presets,
but I have eight of my favorite station set in them. It's somewhat
limited, but if you pick eight of your favorite ones then it's not
so bad. If you get tired of any of the stations you can have a
sighted person help you to scan to find some others. I've had it
for about a year now and have never regretted buying it.
there are a lot of interesting stations out there just for the
looking. If you have any questions please email me.

Greetings. I'm wanting to be a broadcaster on the web and have ben
working my way through the excellent tutorial that Jonathan mosen and
Brian Hartgen put out recently for new broadcasters. I'm having some
trouble though. First off, I'm not sure where to find some of the
needed plug-ins for broadcasting, such as the OctiMax. I've looked on
the Winamp site but the only one they have is for an OctiMax put out
in 2002, which incidentally isn't compatible with Windows Vista, which
is what I'm using. Any ideas? I'm also having an issue where I've
installed the Sam Encoder, but it's not showing in the list of
plug-ins from within Station Playlist Studio. Any ideas on this?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I've gone over several options and
the tutorial a few times in the relevant sections and honestly, I'm
getting confused and frustrated as to why I can't get this to work.
This is my first time at Net broadcasting and I want to get through
this part and move onto putting together a test show for a station.
For what it's worth, I believe I only have one sound card, aside from
the speakers, headphones, and HD soundcard option on my 2 year old
Vista Hoem Premium system.

Sincerely,
Wayne Merritt

Subject: Audio tutorial on Internet Broadcasting Now Available

It's been asked for a lot over the years, and now, Mushroom FM has just
published an audio tutorial on Internet broadcasting for screen reader
users.
If you think you have what it takes to join our team, but you're not sure
how all this Internet broadcasting malarkey works, we can help you out.
Jonathan Mosen and Brian Hartgen have developed The Mushroom FM Fun guys
Guide to Internet Broadcasting. This is an audio tutorial that will help
get

you up and running. The tutorial runs for 3 hours 20 minutes, and covers
things like:

A detailed look at StationPlaylist Studio that shows how to set up and run
this software in an Internet broadcast situation. You'll learn about the
benefits of using a mixer, how to cope with requests, how to use cart
machines and more.
A look at options for getting your broadcast to the Internet, including
using facilities within StationPlaylist Studio, using free Winamp tools,
or

the optional StationPlaylist Streamer.
Using the Sam Encoders with soon to be released JAWS scripts to optimise
your streaming experience.
A session where you hear all the tools we've discussed in action as an
actual radio show goes to air.
A brief overview of StationPlaylist Creator and how it can be used to make
live Internet broadcasting easier.

The tutorial is available for free download in two formats. The DAISY
version can be played using DAISY playback software on your PC, such as
the
free FSReader that is included with JAWS 11 and above. It can also be
played

on portable devices such as the Victor Reader Stream, Book Sense, Plextalk
Pocket and Bookport Plus. The DAISY file is a little bigger to download,
however the DAISY navigation makes moving between sections of the tutorial
very easy.

The MP3 version of the tutorial can be played on your PC or any MP3
capable

device.

Both tutorial files have identical content, they are only different
formats.

Both downloads are zip files. You can extract them using the built-in zip
support in Windows.

To get this free Internet broadcasting tutorial, just head on over to
http://www.MushroomFM.com blocked::http://www.mushroomfm.com/  and
choose

the Become a Presenter link.

We hope you find it helpful.

Re: QuickTime Pro question.

2010-05-23 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Hello:

You can, indeed, select which soundcard you want to use in the QuickTime
preference options; however, it simply uses the Windows basic soundcard
settings to perform that task. Thus, when you select a different soundcard,
you simply switch Windows itself to that card. I don't know if QuickTime
Pro will allow one to choose a different soundcard but I have not been able
to find any information concerning that matter.

Cheers.

Hi Folks:

Is there an advantage to using QuickTime Pro with iTunes? I'm especially
wanting to be able to switch soundcards without changing the default soundcard.

Thanks all over the place gang.

Hello:

Actually, when you change the soundcard using quicktime, you also change the
computer's default soundcard.

Cheers.

I think you only need pro if you plan to record audio or video in
QuickTime. You can change the sound card in just QuickTime.

Hi Jim,

A detailed review of an accessible Internet radio was broadcast on the
first edition of Innovations which is a program broadcast on the Global

www.theglobalvoice.info/gallery.php?show=innovations

Once you get to that link the easiest way to find the edition of
Innovations that has a review of the accessible Internet radio and
associated links is to go to the bottom of the home page and then go
through the links using shift Tab until you find a link to download the
MP3 file. I hope this is clear.

Re: M-audio sound cards

2010-03-18 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Frank:

First of all, the cards themselves should work on any computer but
accessible access to the Delta control panel can only be had using Windows
XP SP2 or earlier.

You can find my Scripts for JAWS on my server which works well with the
Delta control Panel if, as I say, your XP box is not SP3.

Incidentally, I may have a Delta 1010 LT card for sale very soon if you, or
anyone else is interested.

Good luck.
