I know one man who has a 32 gig card. It slows down browsing his library,
but he likes it.

It's possible there's something in the Victor Stream FW that limits the size
of the SD cards you can use to 16G, but I suspect it's more likely that 16G
cards were the largest cards that were available for testing on the Stream
when that recommendation was made. I wouldn't hesitate to try a 32G card in
a Stream, although I may not buy a 32G card to use in my stream if I had
any doubts it would work.

Hi Christopher. Thanks! I thought that's what it might have meant, but I
saw SD disk, so I just thought I'd ask. I hope there was no harm done. I
guess technically, they're about the same size. I don't use SD cards, but
plan sometime to maybe get a Victor Stream. I looked at one of those cards,

and it looks like they're about as long as the cassettes we used to use.
I'd like those HC SD cards. The highest they recommend is a 16 gig card,
but Victor doesn't recommend using a 32 gig, for some reason. Take care!

I said SD cards. The site I was quoting from said SD disks. If you
follow the link to the site, you'll see that they use the term SD card
and SD disk interchangeably. I looked around a bit, and from what I
can tell it looks like SD disk and SD card refer to the same thing. Is
that not the case? Is an SD disk different from an SD card?

I never knew there even was a write protect tab on SD cards! Using
Bing, I found the following web site
 http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080118142914AAzkjb3 and
information

(ANS) SD Micro adapters or SD disk's are exactly the same as the old
3.5inch floppy disks. Every SD disk comes with a tiny write
 protection switch or tab.
IF you hold the SD disk in front of you face up with the makers name
 upper most.

The write protection tab or notch, should be found on the edge of the
disk near the top. By default when you buy a new SD disk the write
protection is turned off. And the Tab on the edge should be in the
Up position, this means write protection is OFF. Meaning data can
be read from the disk written back to the disk, provided its not
 full up.

IF the notch is pushed into the down position then this means that
write protection is enabled (turned on), and thus no data can be
written back to the disk even if there is enough space remaining.

I hope this helps. I've never done anything with the write protect
tab myself, so I don't know how good these instructions are.

serial to usb converters for synthesizers

I am building a new xp machine and I have old serial decTalk and accent

I am using an older version with SoundForge scripts. Has anyone tried this?

Hi,

for speech I would suggest 44.1 and 64 kbps. If it is a performance, sound
seeing tour, or historical event I would consider either 96 or 128 for
speech only. This does not apply to the earlier posts on music and cd
quality.

From your description of what happened when you tried to download a
book, I
suspect you haven't downloaded the Audible Manager software to your
computer. Once you've done that and installed it, Audible Manager will take
care of downloading your books and placing them in a Library list in the

That is where you are wrong. There are many folks whom have made very
handsome profits from BARD. Those players don't just fall from the sky
you know. They cost money to make and design and that is profit for
someone. Also the very existence of BARD is, and has always, been to
provide paid positions for some very connected blind folks. Think
about
it. Why do we even need our own system of libraries? Hundreds of
thousands of local lending libraries throughout the US provide a range
of print, audio, visual, and electronic media to lend to the masses
every day without the same knee jerk concerns of copyright violation.
You can just as easily go to your local library and photocopy a book,
dub a audio tape or copy an overdrive book. Does the government think
blind folks are more predispositioned to piracy than ordinary folks,
that we need such extreme measures that the rest of our culture does
not? There is no reason why our nations infrastructure of lending
libraries could not be the venues for electronic media not just for
the
sighted but blind alike but that would take payola out of the pockets
of
quite a few blind folks now wouldn't it? Yes folks you cannot leave
profit out of this conversation, sad to say.

The reason in my mind is that you are signing up for a service
provided
 by
the US government. This service is free of charge, and you are
agreeing
 to
it's terms when you sign up for it. The law enabling this service aims
to provide material free to the blind while protecting the rights of
the publishers. This program is intended for all blind citizens of the
US and not just those with PC's. This is not a business or profit
making venture, but is paid for by tax dollars, of which I'm a tax
 payer. Your
analogies
 to
Sony and Apple just don't apply. Even though we have the luxury of
keeping the books around and playing them on multiple players, it
 doesn't
change
 the
fact that this is a library, and we're borrowing these books.

BTW, there is no way to listen to these books on a PC. You need a
player
provided for free by the NLS or you can purchase several different
book
 players.

Kevin, the point is this. Why should you, after obtaining the NLS
books,
have to go and get one of the NLS approved players just to enjoy the
privelege of being able to listen to the book while not at the
computer?
That would be like Soni putting out an album with copy protection that
limitted what you could play it on to CD players manufactured by Soni.
 Soni
already tried the whole copy protection to prevent people from putting
the contents of CD's on their computers, or copying them to other
CD's. A pretty high-profile lawsuit later, they don't do that anymore.
Apple tried to say you could only put music you purchased from iTunes
on your iPod. You couldn't burn that to CD, or play it in anything
 else that wasn't
either
your iPod or iTunes. Specificly, the version of iTunes on the computer
to which it was downloaded. Without getting into the nitty gritty
details,
let's just say they don't do that anymore either. The same applies to
 NLS.
The only reason it hasn't changed yet is because there's no reason for
them to, according to them. Hence, people will continue to break the
 copy protection anyway.

Hi everyone. Sorry, another nerdy conversation on the way.

I'm looking to purchase a new audio recorder, and am stuck between the
Edirol R09HR and the Zoom H4N. Both look good for different reasons (the
Zoom looks particularly good as I understand you can use different
microphones to record different channels with it), but I'm not sure about
how accessible they are. If anybody has used either of these machines, I'd
be grateful for any info on features or accessibility which they'd be happy
to share. If somebody has used or tried both, a comparison would also be
really appreciated.

Thanks as always, Danny

The latest stable release is 3.98 as far as I know and I don't think there
have been any more releases.

Installation is simple, just extract LAME.exe and LAME-ENC.DLL to your
windows\system32 folder, CDEX and others should pick them up there.

 High all list members,
In the world of electronics, there is no such word as the word can't.
Where there is a will, there is a way.
I had an old computer that had an old M AUDIO sound card in it.
I couldn't get at the tone controls for the world using Jaws 6.1.
But I found a work around, I got someone in Daytona Beach Florida, to
write scrip's for me to make the sound card do what I wanted it to do.
The same principle very well, could be applied to the Creative Lab sound
 cards.
Yes I agree the manufacturers should listen to the people that use their
products, but that doesn't always happen.
This is why we have to be faithful for the people that are smart enough to

find work arounds for us to use.
Try looking for a suitable solution before you give upon the problem.
My best regards to you all!
  John.

No, I have not made any progress. I unloaded all things soundblaster and
Creative and still the card works, apparently using windows generic
 drivers.
Yet I still can't get access to the advanced controls. Pam sent an email
from the web page on my behalf and of course there was no contact so
 today I
googled and found an Oklahoma City phone number where I got absolutely
nowhere. I did get the corporate office phone number in the san Jose
 area,
but got no answer from their operator in spite of being on the phone
listening to it ring for probably half an hour. So I just started
 punching
in extentions until I got an answer, someone named Breanna. I expressed
 my
concdern about a whole population being shut out of the Creative Labs
product. Will I get a return call? Probably not. Clearly, this is a
company that does not deserve our patronage. Please reconsider if you
 are
 thinking about buying Creative Labs.

Okay, I'm not as bias against Sound Forge as I was, not that I really had
anything against the software mind you, I used it for quite some time but
when I started using the software, I paid over $900.00 for it and the
upgrade costs were considerable. Now? Well as many listers will now, the
Audio Studio - that's the version most people will probably want to use -
is a bargain! in my view at under $60.00 and the Pro version is also
reasonably priced at $350.00.

I don't know how easy to use the Pro version is so perhaps other list
members may be able to fill me in on this.

I stil think Goldwave is an excellent product because the developers of same
have gone out of their way to make the product accessible so that's one huge
advantage Goldwave has over Sound Forge, to my knowledge - if you want to
access Sound Forge properly with a JAWS system - you need scripts which you
have to pay for. If you wish to access Sound Forge with Window-Eyes then
there are ways and means of gaining access to controls but it can be a
little tricky for those who don't have a nack of fiddling with Window-Eyes
parameters and so on, I'm not aware of any Window-Eyes scripts for Sound
Forge but I've never relied on such things anyway.

I'm Using Sound Forge Audio Studio 9 and I'm impressed! with the Getting
Started tutorials that launch when you start the application, a nice touch
and easily accessible through Windows Internet Explorer, the next thing I'd
like to see - if possible - from Sony Software is n online manual for Sound
Forge in HTML format as you'll find in Goldwave but the Getting Started
tutorials are certainly a positive, welcome and encouraging step in the
right direction.

Finally, I'm not trying to be a know-it-all here, after all its been quite
some time since I've used Sound Forge, my feelings for Windows software
aren't as sensitive as they used to be, there's a very special something
about using audio and video editing software and the like for the Mac but
perhaps the performance differences and speed increases are another topic
for another group of messages smile.

Well, first off, we're into the vagueries of currency exchange rates here
and I've no idea of the value of the Australian Doller vs. other currencies.

Re. Sound Studio, yes it's a bargain, but I beleive there aren't scripts for
it in the JFW world. Seem to remember Jim Snowbarger of Sound Forge Scripts
fame has said he'd have to start from scratch with Sound Studio if he was to
do scripts for it. Window-eyes may eventually get more scripting for this
and Sound Forge in particular. They've just appointed a proffessional
script writer who maybe also will co-ordinate much needed work on scripting
for audio editors.

I've been a long time user of SF7 and find it very easy to use. It has been
described as being the equivelant of word processing for audio, and that's
how I find it when I do our weekly talking newspaper. I understand SF9 is
faster and of course is multi-channel, though not multi-track.

To me Goldwave seems less intuitive but I am pretty sure I'd have got used
to the different way of working if that's what I'd had four or five years
back.
You certainly cannot quible at the price; very good value for money. I do
find too that in it's evaluation mode it handles file conversion more
straightforwardly than Sound Forge does.

Remember though that if you want an audio editor that's very easy for vi
users then of course it has to be Sound Studio, I think it's called, from A
P H.
More expensive than Goldwave but really good for narration and spoken word,
but I believe people now do good voice over work with it and some music
related stuff, though it doesn't support noise reduction plug-ins.

I am saying this in all sincerity. Before making any decision, make a list
of the things you wish to do with the unit. If you aren't podcasting,
broadcasting, or making professional use of the machine then consider a
cheaper model. If you think you will go professional, buy a better machine.

I have the Olympus DS71, and as a voice recorder it is absolutely top shelf!
If you liked your DS 50, you will be in love with the DS 71, for note-taking
etc.It has 4 gb flash, so this gives you a lot of recording time.

However, this is not a music recording grade machine. It is a voice
recorder.

The DS 71 has 44.1 wave recording and you can manually set recording levels,
if you want. But, it is not a professional grade recorder - there is
significant background hiss from the mike preamps and circuitry. You can't
beat it for size and performance and accessibility though.

I love it, but I wouldn't want to use it for nature recordings or
full-spectrum sound.

The PTR2 has an in-built mono mic, but it accepts stereo input for a mic -
but, as I mentioned, this input is a bit sensitive and prone to overloading.

The Pocket also has stereo mic input, I can't recall whether it has stereo
in-built mics, I think probably not.

Subject: Help with voiceovers in Sound Forge

Hello, I'm using Sound Forge 9 right now. It's been about nine years
since I used the voice over options, specifically the one where the music

lowers in response to the voice on another file. Where do I find this
option again, and how do I go about it? I need a refresher course. Also,
is it possible to render just the files separately, such as getting the
processed music file with the volume drop in music, but not the voice?
I'm not sure if the music file could then be used with other voice files,

since the volume drop depends on the specific qualities and volume of the

voice that was used in the first place. So direction on this would be
 helpful.
 Thanks a lot.

Hi!

Here's a summary of the accessibility features and functions found on the
new Ipod Touch as taken from the Apple Web Site.

Vision
iPod touch includes a screen reader and other innovative accessibility
features that make it easier to use for those with impaired vision.
VoiceOver

The same VoiceOver screen reader made popular on the Mac and the iPhone is
now a standard feature on iPod touch (3rd generation). It's the world's
first gesture-based screen reader, enabling you to enjoy the fun and
simplicity of iPod touch even if you can't see the screen.
What makes VoiceOver on iPod touch remarkable is that you control it using
simple gestures that let you physically interact with items on the screen.
It's easy to learn and fun to use. Instead of memorizing hundreds of
keyboard commands or endlessly pressing tiny arrow keys to find what you're
looking for, with VoiceOver you simply touch the screen to hear a
description of the item under your finger, then gesture with a double-tap,
drag, or flick.
VoiceOver delivers an experience unlike any screen reader you've used
before. Traditional screen readers describe individual elements on the
screen, but struggle to communicate where each element is located or provide
information about adjoining objects. This contextual

Jim. Are you looking for an audio interface that can track several
channels at once? If so the Edirol FA-66 is a nice audio device. The
software is only used for setting buffers and latency. Everything else is

done on the box with real hardware controls and not one menu.

My only issue with the fa-66 is that it is firewire 400 and I don't know
how low the latency can go. My experience is with a friend's system. It
sure does sound nice for playback. I don't know how good the mic pre-amps

are. You get 4 analog inputs and 2 digital channels totalling six
simultaneous tracks. Price is about$400 CDN.

Jim and others, this news is depressing and doesn't surprise me; it was
 only
a matter of time before M-Audio got around to crappifying the interface
 for
the Delta series. I have an M-Audio Solo USB Soundcard and I can see how
accessability will have been truly screwed up for us as this interface is
 next
to useless for screen reader users. Looks very pretty oh yes!

I've yet to see the rest of this thread but you do wonder if these
 companies
couldn't make the software available to a third party to create an
 accessible
version which the aesthetically conscious could avoid using. We have no
choice but to be locked out of the interface. Shall carry on reading
 this
thread as maybe someone's come up with alternative soundcards with
 accessible
 interfaces.

Hello, All!

Dave and I will be leaving this Sunday for a special, once-in-a-lifetime
trip to Europe where we will spend three-and-a-half weeks with friends in
Britain, possibly my relatives in Ireland, and Dave's brother-in-law touring
Switzerland, France, and Germany. We will be spending several days in
Madrid before returning home.

Ok, what does this have to do with audio? Well, I obviously want to get as
many good recordings as I possibly can. I bought the Edirol R09 a couple of
years ago and had some success with it but put it away for a time. I have
now forgotten a lot about it, and understand there has been at least one
update since I bought the unit.

About a year ago someone on a list, I believe this one, posted information
about the update and was very excited about encouraging other blind people
to use it despite some of its less than accessible features.

I would love to know if anyone remembers this post, and would also
appreciate a source for the downloaded update. I checked edirol.com but
seemed to find myself in a list of links containing ads for everything from
computer software to mortgages. Not now! sigh

I would appreciate any information anyone can provide.

As always, thanks in advance.

If you want an external card, by all means, get one. However, several people
run two cards internally--sometimes the audio on the board and another

I am using Skype with an Audigy sound card and want to know, is there a
configuration I can use or et up such that when I'm using Skype, the audio
from my microphone does not come through the PC speakers? The big problem I
have is space. The speakers are very close to the microphone, so using
Skype with any kind of volume at all is almost impossible because of
feedback problems that ensue as soon as I raise the volume just the leastest
little bit. But every mute button in the Volume Control application mutes
the audio to Skype as well as the audio of the microphone back through to
the speakers. Is there a way around this, or do I have to seriously
consider a second sound card and just don't connect any speakers to the
output?

Hi Stephen! Maybe we could keep the keys the same size if we did some
things: Maybe we wouldn't need the keypad. I don't know about the
six-pack, and maybe get rid of the function keys. Of course, we would need
the arrow keys, so other keys would have to substitute for the keys that
would no longer be needed. I heard someone say that netbook computers don't
have the horsepower as desktop models. I guess that's why I posed the
question to see what others think. I don't think these computers have a CD
rom drive, so one would wonder what would someone do if they had a program
on a CD or DVD?

 Subject: The New Netbooks

Hi All! I'm wondering if anyone has yet tried using the new netbook
computers. I hear that they're quite handy to take from room to room,
 but
again, the keys seem to be a bit smaller, and take a bit of getting
 used to.
Has anyone ever tried using one of these animals?

Try a telephone hybrid from one of the broadcast supply warehouses. You will
have to go through a mixer and may need to understand mix minus.

I thought of possibly feeding the telephone into a mixer with hybrid

That's what I was thinking all along going the telephone hybrid root. That
could run into a few bucks. There's got to be an easier and less expensive
way to accomplish the same thing. I am not concerned about mix minus at this
time, As I will only be recording pre recorded messages from an external
source. I simply want to get the best quality possible from a telephone
line. I have worked with hybrid telephone systems, and have a good knowledge
as to how they work, and know that if they are not set up correctly they
could really be a pain when it comes to AGC conflicts. I have also done the
board splitting thing when doing two ways. .

Subject: Sound Forge 9 and a Dell Latitude 830 Running Vista

First, may I just say it's good to be back on the list. I was a member
several years ago, and when I ran into the problem I'm about to describe, I
must admit to being thrilled and relieved to learn through a Google search
that this list remains viable and active. So thanks first of all to each of
you for being part of this. Now a description of my problem:

One of my Christmas gifts this year was an upgrade from Sound Forge 8 to
Sound Forge 9 so I could use the program on my new Vista laptop running
Vista Business.

I'm in the process of attempting to convert spoken-word cassettes to MP3
files for use on my Victor Reader Stream. My Dell laptop has one of those
Sigma Tel audio drivers, and it has one of those bizarre hybrid jacks that
when you insert a patch cord or microphone, you're forced to pick from a
pop-up list what it is you're inserting into the plug.

When I connect the cassette unit, I select line in when the pop-up list
activates.

Then I bring up Sound Forge 9 and attempt to make my recording. All I hear
when I play things back is whatever the laptop's internal microphone picked
up. I never hear the content of my cassette, and I'm not able to monitor
the sounds coming from the cassette as it records.

I suspect the sound card and drivers in this laptop are of such ridiculously
limited capability that I'm not going to be able to use Sound Forge with it
and have it allow me to hear the cassette both as I'm recording it and later
as I play it back.

I've checked the check box in Sound Forge that deals with monitoring, but I
obviously have some setting somewhere wrong.

I've looked at both the playback controls and the record controls in the
volume program, and I can't see anywhere that allows me to tell the laptop
that the internal microphone should be switched off.

So again, in plain concise English, when I attempt to record from a cassette
using Sound forge, I cannot hear the tape through my laptop speakers as I
would like to; when I attempt to play back what I've recorded, what I get is
the sounds picked up from my internal microphone rather than the data from
the cassette.

If anyone has thoughts on what settings either in Sound Forge or in my
laptop I can change, I'd be most grateful to learn about those.

Again, my thanks to the list moderator and its members for keeping this list
alive so that a slacker like me can run back to it after years of absence
when I'm having a problem I clearly can't solve alone.

Warmest Wishes for a Pleasant, Memorable and Safe 2009,

Nolan Crabb

I have done some tutorials and because of radio interviewing I have a good
mixer. I would think the cleanest way to do this would be to buy a $100
mixer. It would give you more flexibility.

As for the humb, make sure you have good shielded cables.

I'm sure there are more opinions from other goldWave users.

Hello,

I'd appreciate any advice folks who have more experience doing PC recording
can share on basic setup to produce reasonable recordings of screen reader
audio along with voice recording. I have some experience in the area but
most of my recording has been making edits to sound files I record with
another audio recorder.

I have a Sound Blaster 2ZS and my biggest frustration is that the microphone
audio volume sounds low. I'm using the what you hear option to do my
recording at this point. I have the playback of the microphone enabled in
the sound settings. I also have the 20DB boost option checked. If I turn
the microphone volume up to a level that sounds good to me, I get some
electronic hum mixed in that I don't like. The hum is there even if there
is no microphone connected to the microphone jack of the Sound Blaster.

As an experiment I tried a notebook computer I have and the sound card on
that is just some intel integrated audio card but the sound was much cleaner
out of the box.

I'm using Goldwave for my recording program.

I'd like to get more into this for some projects I'm doing. I may go down
the road of an external mixer at some point but for now I'd like to see if I
can get the software solutions to work.

I put a sampel of the audio and hum I'm talking about at

There are good inexpensive mixers from sound professionals and the staff is
usually knowledgeable. One brand is Rols.

You can also check out your radio shack--the last time a friend of mine

Hi Alex, your best bet is to install software like GSPlayer on your PAC

I'm not sure how much you already have set up in terms of streaming, so if
you need more info on setting up the stream I'm sure we can provide that

Subject: microphone questions

Hello,

I know this list is primarily for electronic music stuff, but I was
wondering whether any of you could help me with an audio queery.

I am considering purchasing a Zoom H2 digital recorder, as it is the least
expensive device to offer as many features and such great quality as
recorders twice it's price.
I want to purchase several different external microphones for it. It
supports plug-and-power, with a 1/8 inch stereo mic in/line in jack.
I want to purchase the following:

1. A mono microphone
2. A pair of high quality sterio microphones, handheld with mic stands. I
want them to be good quality but reasonably inexpensive, somewhere less than
300 dollars.
3. A lapel mic.
4. A set of sterio ear microphones. (sometimes called headworn or
over-the-ear mics.
5. A sterio mic, that is like a pair of headphones in that there is only 1
connection, and the cord splits into 2 mics.

I want to purchase all of these mics, but am not sure of the manufacturer.
What will give me the best quality but be least expensive? Which mic should
I choose? I need the mic cable to end in a 1/8 inch connector.

Sincerely,
Joshua Pearson

RE: SIGMATEL PROBLEMS ON DELL LAPTOP

2008-07-15 Thread Judy W

I sold my Dell with sigmatel because all recordings were muffled and it
wasn't working with Skype or other programs. The Dell support teams admitted
that sigmatel had a problem. The output is good, but input is very
problematic. The web cam microphones sounded better than any of the external
mics we tried, but they kept dropping out..

It was a shame I had to sell it, the xps was a light and fast machine...

If you google the problem, you will see it mentioned as a known problem.

Using the Winamp equalizer is very simple.
What you would need to do is follow these steps.
1. control+tab.
By doing this, you will be in the Winamp equalizer window.
Step 2. The equalizer is configured in to 10 bands.
the numbers 1 through 0 boost the bands, the letters q through p cuts the
bands.
Step 3. the ` key allows you to change the preamp value.
You can set this to your liking.
Step 4. Balance control.
This is sat by your right and left arrow keys.
It will fade the sound of Winamp from the left speaker to the right
speaker.
Balance is right in the middle.
Think of these controls of being on a stereo system from the late 80's,
early 90's
The Winamp equalizer works exactly the same way!
Step 5. Control+tab will put you back in the Winamp mane window.
I hope all of these tips helps you with this part of Winamp.

Well, yes, suppose rippping is what you do in copying the original CD into
a program such as Nero; but then Nero makes the process of copying from
CD to CD very easy and will do it at 16x or maybe more - though good
reliable audio copies are done at no more than 16x.

The commercial consumer CD copiers from the likes of Sony and Marantz tend
to copy more slowly than this, maybe 4x 8x. The more professional ones
from makers such as Tascam will copy at 16x.

Many will tell you they copy at greater than 16x these days, but I'm
erring on the side of reliability of CD copies in saying what I have on
 this subject.

 Cheers,
 Ray.

Hi Ray. Don't I have to rip the music before I copy to another disk? This

Mind you, if you are doing a limited amount of CD copying then as you've

RE: looking for a mixer

2007-12-17 Thread Judy W

Mackie is more expensive, but the signal to noise ratio is supposed to be
better. I would analyze what you are going to use it for.

If it's in your budget and you are broadcasting, I would go for something
more high end, but if you just wish to transfer some music or tape, you can
find something for around $100.

Yep, that is a bit surprising, I mean 64 meg cards for example aren't
exactly what one would call expensive are they.
Now can someone tell us more about the reader as I'm thinking of
getting myself one next year, what formats does it record in? Does the
reader have a line-in jack or facility? At present I have my mind set
on either the Zoom h2 or h4 recorder but if there's something a little
more accessible out there then I'd be interested to hear about it, the
Zoom doesn't have synthesized speech or anything but there are plenty
of blind people out there using them as evidenced from the reviews on
them at http://www.blindcooltech.com

I was told by the vendor that the bit rate was very low and not adjustable.
I listened to it and everyone has there own definition of quality, but all
the people in the room felt it was not accessible for anything but very
basic notes.

I don't think anyone did, I heard that it could record so I was
wondering what sort of recording capacity the reader had.
Incidentally talking about recorders, I notice that the Olympus range
of Recorders (Voice Recorders to be more accurate) got a very good
review in our local newspaper last Thursday as compared to the new
Sony offering. One of the drawbacks with the Sony was that it used its
own proprarity audio encoding and you needed extra software to
transfer and decode the audio to make it compatible for playing on a
PC. Further to this the Sony model (whilst it could be connected to a
PC) did not function as an external drive meaning that once again,
extra software had to be used to make it act this way, no Mac software
exists for the Sony recorder of course.

Subject: Problem with audio muting at random

Hi. I have a problem with my sound card muting all audio, seemingly at
random. Everything looks normal on the computer but there is no sound. And
if I open up Sounds and Audio devices, everything shows as muted.

This problem can happen once and then not happen again for 3 months or it
can happen 2 days in a row while I'm in the middle of work. So far, there's
no rhyme or reason for this anomaly.

My question then? Aside from trusting Windows to maintain a given audio
setting, might there be software that forces audio to assume certain
settings upon rebooting? Failing that, could I somehowe save a given audio
configuration to the desktop, one thatI could locate and press to force my
audio settings to take effect? This is an extremely random problem, so I
would like a method of countering it while I try to figure out what's
causing it.

Thanks for any ideas.

Larry

RE: Soundforge and reducing hiss, static, etc.

2007-11-15 Thread Judy W

I personally don't care what people choose to use for sound reduction. I am
just saying that I can use the plugin that you can purchase for SoundForge 6
with jaws and Jim's scripts. It was cheaper for me to buy the product as a
bundle and I got a very good deal. The noise reduction was designed to work
with the product.

I am sure someone can find better noise reduction, but how much do you want
to pay and do you want to struggle with using it.

Just my opinion,

Judy

I'm not talking about anyone being knocked, rather, that what you are
proposing may be out of the leagues of some of us, regarding installing plug
ins, to Soundforge and all the ramifications that this feat may involve! I,
for one, have used Soundforge 6.0, for quite awhile, but, on only a
rudimentary level, wherein I can edit, normalize, resample(if I want to
convert a file, that I have recorded, in mp3, back to wave), etc., etc.,
etc.. In other words, I haven't explored the Noise Reduction realm, much at
all and wouldn't have a clue, as to getting rid of machine noise, as
opposed to hiss and other things! Does that make my point of view a little
clearer, Dane? I am not knocking you, either, just trying to prevent
Knowledge Frustration!

Sure! I'm not knocking anyone, the point I was making was that the
Noise Reduction plug-ins marketed alongside Sound Forge are not the be-

Now before we go any further here, I think it worth reminding everyone
that you do not have to use the Sound Forge Noise reduction plug-ins
specifically for reducing noise or hiss, in fact its probably better
that you don't as there are far more affective and far more accessible
plug-ins out there which will work with Sound Forge and other
compatible software such as Adobe Audition, Total Recorder etc. Its
been a good while since I've used some of these things, I've referred
to them on list before so I'll dig around my software collection and
get back to the list with the name and the web site of the plug-ins I
 purchased.
All adjustments and settings were completely accessible with a screen
reader providing feedback when adjustments were made.

RE: New flash recorders from Sony and Marantz

2007-10-03 Thread Judy W

wrapping main menus and wrapping submenus can create a nightmare and can
make it almost imposible to function in some field situations.

While interviewing a busy subject, they have no time for you to find a
sighted person to help you set the menus if something has been bumped. You
can't ask a subject to assist in setting your menus because that's very
unprofessional and they may be computer novices. It could give the
impression that you don't know how to run your equipment.

It sure is if you can't remember that last position. I'd also venture to
say that even the most adept users of electronics won't be able to do this
for all the gadgets in their possession. Wrapping menus are a real killer

wrapping isn't such an issue.

I looked at both the Sony and Marantz digital recorders and feel
 that the
Marantz, in my opinion would be the better choice. The display
 window on the
Sony has a lot of information packed into it while the display
 window on the
Marantz has easy to read information for those of us with
 functional vision.
The button configuration appears to be well laid out with a ring
 similar to
the Ipod with volume up, volume down and enter in the middle. The
 Marantz
sells for about 300 dollars American, while the Sony comes in at a
 wapping
500 dollars. I think that the Sony unit has a few bells and
 whistles such as
apitch control and the likes. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in
Canada is currently using a Marantz digital recorder in the field.

Subject: Sound Forge -- Finding Gaps in Audio

 Hi all,

Does anyone know if its possible to use sound forge to find gaps in audio?
That is, I have many 1 hour long audio files and don't know if there are
 any
gaps in them as I recorded these streams off of the internet. Rather than
listening to the files in their entirety, I would like to quickly find my
way to any part of the file that has a piece of silence caused by an audio
gap. If this feature does in fact exist within Sound Forge, please let me
know what its called and I'll research it from there.

 big thanks,

 Matthew

Try oldversions.com. Some versions of winamp are more stable than others.

 Hi Tiffany,

I'm not sure if there is a special reason why you want version 5.34
but version 5.35 which is the latest official version of Winamp can
 be downloaded from www.whitestick.co.uk/progs/winamp535_full.exe. If
you really want version 5.34 you might have to search a bit to find
it seeing it is no longer the latest version.

HI all,

I'm using Sound Forge 8 and I'm noticing a distinct little popping and
crackling when I raise the volume on my audio files. That is, I have either
a .wav or .ogg file and run it through Sound Forge's volume raising utility,
and I choose the 200% boost because I don't know how to customize this
boosting setting, and I save the file as .ogg. I then listen to the original
file really loud and compare it to the file with the volume I just raised,
and I find that the second file has this staticky sound at certain parts of
the file that are not present in the original file. The static seems to be
most pronounced when there are lots of loud things happening at the same
time, or when a single sound is very loud as in the event of an audio
explosion in a movie and so on. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated as
I don't want to keep wasting so much time processing files with so much
crackling.

thanks,
Matthew

If you have a spare $10,000 you could get a Braille Note which can display
the time by second.
Perhaps a lazy 2 grand could be increased to $10,00 by backing the Hawks for

I trust this is not off topic as it does relate to broadcasting in a
digital environment and this list is rich with broadcasters and technical
operators.

I'm looking for a way to monitor the current time by second. This was a
very handy feature of the Braille Lite, but I can't find any other way of
 doing it.

Pac Mate does have a stopwatch feature but this is cumbersome when you're
wanting a live cue, counting up to mid night etc.

Anyone with any bright ideas. Suggestions off list would be welcome.

I'm going to give a gift certificate for some downloadable music to a
high school graduate. My preferred service for this purpose is
EMusic because of the reasonable price and unprotected
mp3's. However, they seem to cater more toward the 25-54
demographic. I suspect that out of their 2 million tracks our grad
should find a few she wants, but I'm curious if any folks who are
more in tune would advise me to look into a different service. With
EMusic, songs cost about 33 cents each, which I like a lot.

thanks.

Hi! I'm currently looking at various broadcasting tools, and I've heard
that Station Playlist is very accessible. I downloaded a demo of Creator,
and it was somewhat friendly. However, I noticed that when I was creating a
playlist, it wouldn't show me all of my sub-folders within my music folder
after I had selected a tune. It would default to whatever sub-folder I had
selected, and no matter what I did, it wouldn't let me see any of the other
ones. Do I need Jaws scripts to use it well? And is the Studio software
accessible? My guess is that I probably don't necessarily need that, since
I'm using Winamp. May not need Creator either, but I thought it might be
helpful, since it keeps track of the time for you. I don't have an entire
station, just a 2-hour show which will start as soon as I can figure out how
to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. Smile

JfW tech support advised me to get nvidia g force. If you're going to vista
in a couple of years, I'd get 2 gig of ram.

Think about at least a 400 watt power supply if you're doing a lot of heavy

recording. For the price you named, you can get two large hard drives and a
cd drive and video burner.

Pick your sound card carefully depending on your production work.

Subject: new subscriber requesting advice

Hello, everyone. First of all, I'd like to sincerely apologize in advance
if this message is off-topic for this list. I'm just trying to get as much
feedback as possible. I'm preparing to buy a new computer, one that I hope
will last me for at least as long as my current system
has. The last computer I got was in 2002, and it is still more or less
functional, but I'm wanting to get a system that is not only more
up-to-date, but also more responsive. I do
a lot of work with audio files , mostly mp3 and midi. I also do a lot of
web browsing, word processing, and I play a lot of text-based games both on
and
off line. I've been trying to do my homework with regards to parts to
include in my dream system. I've decided that even though it might be a
little more expensive, I'd rather hand pick every aspect of my new system
to insure that I know exactly what I'm getting and also to insure maximum
compatibility with the latest version of JFW professional version.
My goals for this system, in order of importance, are maximum stability,
maximum responsiveness and as much future proofing as possible. I'm
prepared to spend up to $3500 to get everything as nice as possible, but
naturally, if I could spend less, that would be really great. For numerous
reasons, I'm not planning to upgrade to Windows Vista quite yet; I'm
planning to run my new computer using Windows XP media center edition for a
year or so. Never-the-less, I'd like this new computer to be completely
ready for vista whenever I am.
With all that being said, I was hoping that I could get advice from members
of this list with regards to my final parts checklist.
I'm planning to purchase all my parts from newegg.com some time next month,
and then get the system assembled by an expert in my local area.
Basicly, what I'm hoping to attain is guidance in making sure that I
haven't picked out any blatently incompatible parts, or that I
haven't overlooked anything. My primary questions at this point pertain to
choosing
the most stable motherboard and video card to meet my needs. As much
research as I've done over the past couple of months, there are still a lot
of things that I don't fully understand. All I know is that I have no plans
to overclock my system, especially since JFW can't access the bios, so I
would have to rely on someone with vision to do all the playing around,
and nobody I know would even have the slightest clue how to do any of that
stuff.
Further more, I have absolutely no clue what a rade is or what its function
would be. I essencially want somebody to be able to put my system together,
I install JFW, and then everything will work together as harmoniously as
possible. I've got it narrowed down between 2 motherboards: the ABIT AB9
QuadGT and the Intel D975XBX2KR. I'm leaning towards the Abit board only
because it supports quad core processors, which tells me that if I ever
decide I need to upgrade again in a few years, I will be able to do so
without having to buy another motherboard. Has anyone had any experiences
with either of these motherboards or ones
that are comparable? Which of them is more likely to be compatible with
Jaws? As I've already indicated in my introduction,, I'm looking for
maximum
stability and responsiveness. So, if anyone could provide feedback with
regards to which of these two motherboards might be best suited for my
needs, I would really appreciate it. My other concern, which is probably
more relevant to JFW stability is
choosing the most appropriate video card.Does anyone have any
recommendations regarding any brands or models of video cards that work
really well with the latest version of JAWS Professional 8.0? Are there any
brands/models of video cards I should make
sure to avoid? Is ATI or Nvidia more compatible with JFW at this point?
Should I purchase a dx10 capable card, or can I get by with a significantly
less expensive option?

RE: what soft wair to use?

2007-02-22 Thread Judy W

It depends on how much you want to spend and what you need. SoundForge is
more powerful and has a much higher learning curve.

GoldWave is cheaper and works well. There are good tutorials for both. Are
you recording sounds with no need to add special effects or are you wanting
to have all sorts of special effects built in to the program? Evaluate your
own needs because the programs are quite different in price and operation.

Hope this helps,

RE: problems with winamp

2007-02-17 Thread Judy W

It could be a bug. Two broadcasters have told me that they find version 5.24
the most stable...

You can find it at oldversions or someone may have it.

Just because a new version comes out doesn't mean you have to upgrade unless
there are serious security issues or it has a feature you want.

Just my opinion,

Judy

Hi.

I've been looking online at the Snowman's scripts for SoundForge.

I have jaws 5 on my computer. I'm aware it has some scripts for soundforge
that came from freedom scientific. I'd like to know if they are the same
ones that the snowman made? Did he make them for freedom scientific? Or are
they better?

I have real problems when running those freedom scientific scripts; it makes
soundforge unusable and I end up having to reboot. It's ok for a while, but
then windows error noises kick in and eventually jaws unloads itself.

Also. I want to buy the soundforge scripts for soundforge 4.5 for jaws 5
because I have some urgent editing work to do.

How does it work? Will i get them immediately from the snowman in an
automated way? Or will i have to wait a few days?

thanks

RE: using a mixer

2007-01-16 Thread Judy W

you use it for voice overs and music tracks although you can do it with
SoundForge goldwave or studio recorder. You can broadcast without a mixer,
but if you want to do a show with two people on mics or use a cd player then
a mixer might be nice.

I strongly suggest that you google some tutorials on broadcasting and
equipment. I've seen several on mics, mixers, and software. Also, basic
explanations of bit rates and things like limiters and compressers. These
tutorials are all over the web and you should learn as much as you can
before you try to choose equipment and software.

Chris,
You hit the nail on the head! We are not talking conventional broadcasting
here, we are only talking about the internet where the bandwidth is narrow
to begin with Whether you use a thousand dollar mike or a fifty dollar mike
the end results are going to be the same when you take the available
bandwidth into consideration. In order to compensate for the difference in
bandwidth some broadcasters will go as far as to ad audio processing to the
mix. They will enhance the audio by putting emphasis on certain frequencies
giving the impression that one is listening to good audio. With audio
processing It is very easy to trick the human ear into thinking that what
you are listening too is top notch quality, when in reality we are only
masking it. The other day there was a debate about cassette tape verses CD.
We have to keep in mind that the faster the tape travels across the heads
the better the audio quality. Back in the days of reel to reel tape
recorders we had several tape speeds to choose from, 1 and 7 eights, 3 and 3
quarters, 7 and one half, 15, and 30 The laddered two speeds where mainly
used by broadcasters. Personally I find the phonograph record to be the
best, as there is a fullness and warmth to the sound provided that you don't
have a record with a lot of pops on it. The price of mixers and microphones
have come down considerably over the years. I can get a good microphone for
around 50 dollars and a Barrenger mixer with all of the bells and whistles
for about the same. Many broadcasters are now using off the shelf equipment
for daily use, as the quality is as good as some of the mid priced
commercial stuff. For an example if an off the shelf CD player packs it in
you simply throw it away and get a new one, as the labour of repairing it
would simply be too expensive In conclusion if one is setting up an internet
radio station there is no need to go into deep debt in order to achieve a
good sound. One should be able to set up an internet station for well under
500 dollars. Provided that you have a computer your major cost will be the
software, and that too is dropping in cost. Hope this helps. . . . .

My point exactly, Bob. Cory is probably interested in internet
broadcasting, if I'm wrong correct me on that one, and even a 50
dollar headset mic will serve your needs just fine for that, if used
properly and if your setup allows for such a thing. Everyone's setup
is different and yes, different mics are used for different applications.
So it may be the right mic for you, but maybe not.

use an external synthesizer or a second sound card. Again, I would urge you
to check the main menu archives or tutorials where you will get a good
grounding in broadcasting. You can hear how several programs work and better
evaluate your needs and learning curve.

Some people will be willing to help you, but you will need to read manuals
and help files. Some of these programs take a while to learn. You also need
to have a good knowledge of your screen reader.

I've had people offer to walk me through set up on difficult programs and
then disappear at the last minute. Basically, it's up to you. Lists like
these are good, but they can only take you so far...

It is however, the standard for live performance.

Just like the SM 57 is the preferred choice for most live instrument

I've seen and used mikes in the studio that cost over a grand each no
problem.

I mike my kit with old Zen 421's and the snare with a 441 and I will never

Yall problbly know that there are plenty of rip offs on sure products like

He's not an audio snob. I think he's right. You have to ask what is the mic
going to be used for. All of the radio stations I have been in use very
expensive condenser mics. You can get a cheaper akg mic if it's for
broadcasting. You will get a wormer more professional sound. This info comes
from the engineer at our local public radio station. Unfortunately, I can't
afford one for my show at this time.

On the other hand, I know several folk musicians who will use nothing but
the sure mic. You can't just say that a mic is good or bad. You need to
evaluate what you want to use it for and then you need to look at your
budget...

Just my opinion,

Judy, if you have a mixer and can spare $69-$79, You can't go wrong with a
Cad GXL2200/2400. The only real difference between the two is that the 2400
has greater SPL, though I believe in a broadcast setting you can't tell, and
that the 2400 is smaller. otherwise, these microphones are flawless, and
I'll be honest, i wouldn't rather talk on anything else on my shows, and
this comes from someone who's used Rode NT1's, Shure SM58's and similar,
etc. If you'd like a sample of the Cad GXL2400, which i have, contact me.

He's not an audio snob. I think he's right. You have to ask what is the
 mic
going to be used for. All of the radio stations I have been in use very
expensive condenser mics. You can get a cheaper akg mic if it's for
broadcasting. You will get a wormer more professional sound. This info
 comes
from the engineer at our local public radio station. Unfortunately, I
 can't
afford one for my show at this time.

On the other hand, I know several folk musicians who will use nothing but
the sure mic. You can't just say that a mic is good or bad. You need to
evaluate what you want to use it for and then you need to look at your
 budget...

 Just my opinion,

 Judy

Subject: Clarifying M issue with the 58, was Re: mic

By saying that it was over rated, i am not saying that something is quote
unquote wrong audio-wise with the 58. What i am saying is wrong with
 the
58 is its high price tag, which isn't justified. Furthermore, and this is
what pisses me off, is that, and i can back this up with many people,
 people
seem to have a complex when they have their 58's in a studio setting.
 They
think that htis is a shure mic, and because of the marketing hype involved
with said shure mic, they feel they have the best of the best. The Quote
 unquote legendary Shure SM58.

the manufacturer's suggested retail price for a 58 is well over $99,
possibly $199. the manufacturer's suggested retail price for an Audio
Technica Atr30 seems to have dipped from $79 down to $39, which is what
 I've
seen it going for for years. And the specifications are just as good, and
the sound is up there to proove it.

At the price of a 58, or possibly less, and I am perfectly qualified to
 say
this because I've done it, you can get one hell of a condenser microphone.
Look at anything made by cad and you'll see of what I speak. But, again,
the Shure SM58 is marketed as a classic. It is. It's a throwback to the
days when there was no better value, without the price decrease that would
befit a mic like the 58 based on how it sounds. Now there is better value
in the mic world. Do your research before settling on market-hype,
 because
market-hype will kill you. It has done that to me.

I agree and what about warnings. Sometimes, this community can be very
unforgiving. I have seen people on this list imply that new people have
stupid questions, but to my knowledge they have never been band...

I hear and see words I'm not fond of every day.

Just my opinion and we still have a right to have one...

Wait just a minute. Wile I'll agree that the once off S bomb is nothing
to be upset over, I did see some of Lin's messages where he got on
people's cases for maybe not taking the time to read the whole page, this
that and the other, like everyone has to be as intuitive as he. One of
the people who protested the bann said he thought this list was to help
people. In Lin's case, he was being somewhat helpful, but in a way that
can be a bit offputting, especially for those people who may not be as
literate in some forms of computing as other forms. How would you feel
 if
you had a question and you asked, and someone came at you with an answer
like, RTFM! Some manuals are as off-putting as some people's additude
that everyone should be as smart as the writer who wrote the mannual.

 Think about that!
