I don't use SD cards, but plan sometime to maybe get a Victor Stream. I looked at one of those cards, and it looks like they're about as long as the cassettes we used to use. I'd like those HC SD cards. The highest they recommend is a 16 gig card, but Victor doesn't recommend using a 32 gig, for some reason. Using Bing, I found the following web site http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080118142914AAzkjb3 and information (ANS) SD Micro adapters or SD disk's are exactly the same as the old 3.5inch floppy disks. Every SD disk comes with a tiny write protection switch or tab. IF you hold the SD disk in front of you face up with the makers name upper most. The write protection tab or notch, should be found on the edge of the disk near the top. By default when you buy a new SD disk the write protection is turned off. And the Tab on the edge should be in the Up position, this means write protection is OFF. Meaning data can be read from the disk written back to the disk, provided its not full up. IF the notch is pushed into the down position then this means that write protection is enabled (turned on), and thus no data can be written back to the disk even if there is enough space remaining. I hope this helps. serial to usb converters for synthesizers
I am building a new xp machine and I have old serial decTalk and accent synthesizers. I use my delta card for recording so I need to know if anyone has used a serial to usb converter to run older external synthesizers. I know new versions of Jaws will run two devices from the install menu, but I am using an older version with SoundForge scripts. Has anyone tried this? Hundreds of thousands of local lending libraries throughout the US provide a range of print, audio, visual, and electronic media to lend to the masses every day without the same knee jerk concerns of copyright violation. You can just as easily go to your local library and photocopy a book, dub a audio tape or copy an overdrive book. Does the government think blind folks are more predispositioned to piracy than ordinary folks, that we need such extreme measures that the rest of our culture does not? Why should you, after obtaining the NLS books, have to go and get one of the NLS approved players just to enjoy the privelege of being able to listen to the book while not at the computer? That would be like Soni putting out an album with copy protection that limitted what you could play it on to CD players manufactured by Soni. Soni already tried the whole copy protection to prevent people from putting the contents of CD's on their computers, or copying them to other CD's. A pretty high-profile lawsuit later, they don't do that anymore. Apple tried to say you could only put music you purchased from iTunes on your iPod. You couldn't burn that to CD, or play it in anything else that wasn't either your iPod or iTunes. Specificly, the version of iTunes on the computer to which it was downloaded. Without getting into the nitty gritty details, let's just say they don't do that anymore either. The same applies to NLS. The only reason it hasn't changed yet is because there's no reason for them to, according to them. Hence, people will continue to break the copy protection anyway. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Kevin Minor

But I found a work around, I got someone in Daytona Beach Florida, to write scrip's for me to make the sound card do what I wanted it to do. The same principle very well, could be applied to the Creative Lab sound cards. Yes I agree the manufacturers should listen to the people that use their products, but that doesn't always happen. I don't know how easy to use the Pro version is so perhaps other list members may be able to fill me in on this. I stil think Goldwave is an excellent product because the developers of same have gone out of their way to make the product accessible so that's one huge advantage Goldwave has over Sound Forge, to my knowledge - if you want to access Sound Forge properly with a JAWS system - you need scripts which you have to pay for. If you wish to access Sound Forge with Window-Eyes then there are ways and means of gaining access to controls but it can be a little tricky for those who don't have a nack of fiddling with Window-Eyes parameters and so on, I'm not aware of any Window-Eyes scripts for Sound Forge but I've never relied on such things anyway. Re. Sound Studio, yes it's a bargain, but I beleive there aren't scripts for it in the JFW world. Seem to remember Jim Snowbarger of Sound Forge Scripts fame has said he'd have to start from scratch with Sound Studio if he was to do scripts for it. Window-eyes may eventually get more scripting for this and Sound Forge in particular. They've just appointed a proffessional script writer who maybe also will co-ordinate much needed work on scripting for audio editors. I've been a long time user of SF7 and find it very easy to use. It has been described as being the equivelant of word processing for audio, and that's how I find it when I do our weekly talking newspaper. I understand SF9 is faster and of course is multi-channel, though not multi-track. To me Goldwave seems less intuitive but I am pretty sure I'd have got used to the different way of working if that's what I'd had four or five years back. You certainly cannot quible at the price; very good value for money. I do find too that in it's evaluation mode it handles file conversion more straightforwardly than Sound Forge does. Remember though that if you want an audio editor that's very easy for vi users then of course it has to be Sound Studio, I think it's called, from A P H. More expensive than Goldwave but really good for narration and spoken word, but I believe people now do good voice over work with it and some music related stuff, though it doesn't support noise reduction plug-ins. I am saying this in all sincerity. Before making any decision, make a list of the things you wish to do with the unit. If you liked your DS 50, you will be in love with the DS 71, for note-taking etc.It has 4 gb flash, so this gives you a lot of recording time. However, this is not a music recording grade machine. It is a voice recorder. The DS 71 has 44.1 wave recording and you can manually set recording levels, if you want. But, it is not a professional grade recorder - there is significant background hiss from the mike preamps and circuitry. You can't beat it for size and performance and accessibility though. I love it, but I wouldn't want to use it for nature recordings or full-spectrum sound. The PTR2 has an in-built mono mic, but it accepts stereo input for a mic - but, as I mentioned, this input is a bit sensitive and prone to overloading. The Pocket also has stereo mic input, I can't recall whether it has stereo in-built mics, I think probably not. I have an M-Audio Solo USB Soundcard and I can see how accessability will have been truly screwed up for us as this interface is next to useless for screen reader users. Looks very pretty oh yes! I've yet to see the rest of this thread but you do wonder if these companies couldn't make the software available to a third party to create an accessible version which the aesthetically conscious could avoid using. We have no choice but to be locked out of the interface. Shall carry on reading this thread as maybe someone's come up with alternative soundcards with accessible interfaces. Dave and I will be leaving this Sunday for a special, once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe where we will spend three-and-a-half weeks with friends in Britain, possibly my relatives in Ireland, and Dave's brother-in-law touring Switzerland, France, and Germany. We will be spending several days in Madrid before returning home. Ok, what does this have to do with audio? Well, I obviously want to get as many good recordings as I possibly can. I bought the Edirol R09 a couple of years ago and had some success with it but put it away for a time. I have now forgotten a lot about it, and understand there has been at least one update since I bought the unit. About a year ago someone on a list, I believe this one, posted information about the update and was very excited about encouraging other blind people to use it despite some of its less than accessible features. I would love to know if anyone remembers this post, and would also appreciate a source for the downloaded update. I checked edirol.com but seemed to find myself in a list of links containing ads for everything from computer software to mortgages. Not now! sigh I would appreciate any information anyone can provide. As always, thanks in advance. Hope this helps, Judy -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Nolan Crabb Sent: Wednesday, December 31, 2008 8:15 AM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: Sound Forge 9 and a Dell Latitude 830 Running Vista First, may I just say it's good to be back on the list. I was a member several years ago, and when I ran into the problem I'm about to describe, I must admit to being thrilled and relieved to learn through a Google search that this list remains viable and active. So thanks first of all to each of you for being part of this. Now a description of my problem: One of my Christmas gifts this year was an upgrade from Sound Forge 8 to Sound Forge 9 so I could use the program on my new Vista laptop running Vista Business. I'm in the process of attempting to convert spoken-word cassettes to MP3 files for use on my Victor Reader Stream. My Dell laptop has one of those Sigma Tel audio drivers, and it has one of those bizarre hybrid jacks that when you insert a patch cord or microphone, you're forced to pick from a pop-up list what it is you're inserting into the plug. When I connect the cassette unit, I select line in when the pop-up list activates. Then I bring up Sound Forge 9 and attempt to make my recording. All I hear when I play things back is whatever the laptop's internal microphone picked up. I never hear the content of my cassette, and I'm not able to monitor the sounds coming from the cassette as it records. I suspect the sound card and drivers in this laptop are of such ridiculously limited capability that I'm not going to be able to use Sound Forge with it and have it allow me to hear the cassette both as I'm recording it and later as I play it back. I've checked the check box in Sound Forge that deals with monitoring, but I obviously have some setting somewhere wrong. I've looked at both the playback controls and the record controls in the volume program, and I can't see anywhere that allows me to tell the laptop that the internal microphone should be switched off. So again, in plain concise English, when I attempt to record from a cassette using Sound forge, I cannot hear the tape through my laptop speakers as I would like to; when I attempt to play back what I've recorded, what I get is the sounds picked up from my internal microphone rather than the data from the cassette. If anyone has thoughts on what settings either in Sound Forge or in my laptop I can change, I'd be most grateful to learn about those. Again, my thanks to the list moderator and its members for keeping this list alive so that a slacker like me can run back to it after years of absence when I'm having a problem I clearly can't solve alone. I have done some tutorials and because of radio interviewing I have a good mixer. I would think the cleanest way to do this would be to buy a $100 mixer. It would give you more flexibility. I have a Sound Blaster 2ZS and my biggest frustration is that the microphone audio volume sounds low. I'm using the what you hear option to do my recording at this point. I have the playback of the microphone enabled in the sound settings. I also have the 20DB boost option checked. If I turn the microphone volume up to a level that sounds good to me, I get some electronic hum mixed in that I don't like. Mackie is more expensive, but the signal to noise ratio is supposed to be better. I would analyze what you are going to use it for. If it's in your budget and you are broadcasting, I would go for something more high end, but if you just wish to transfer some music or tape, you can find something for around $100. Incidentally talking about recorders, I notice that the Olympus range of Recorders (Voice Recorders to be more accurate) got a very good review in our local newspaper last Thursday as compared to the new Sony offering. One of the drawbacks with the Sony was that it used its own proprarity audio encoding and you needed extra software to transfer and decode the audio to make it compatible for playing on a PC. Further to this the Sony model (whilst it could be connected to a PC) did not function as an external drive meaning that once again, extra software had to be used to make it act this way, no Mac software exists for the Sony recorder of course. I have a problem with my sound card muting all audio, seemingly at random. Everything looks normal on the computer but there is no sound. And if I open up Sounds and Audio devices, everything shows as muted. This problem can happen once and then not happen again for 3 months or it can happen 2 days in a row while I'm in the middle of work. So far, there's no rhyme or reason for this anomaly. My question then? Aside from trusting Windows to maintain a given audio setting, might there be software that forces audio to assume certain settings upon rebooting? Failing that, could I somehowe save a given audio configuration to the desktop, one thatI could locate and press to force my audio settings to take effect? This is an extremely random problem, so I would like a method of countering it while I try to figure out what's causing it. Thanks for any ideas. I personally don't care what people choose to use for sound reduction. I am just saying that I can use the plugin that you can purchase for SoundForge 6 with jaws and Jim's scripts. It was cheaper for me to buy the product as a bundle and I got a very good deal. The noise reduction was designed to work with the product. RE: New flash recorders from Sony and Marantz
wrapping main menus and wrapping submenus can create a nightmare and can make it almost imposible to function in some field situations. While interviewing a busy subject, they have no time for you to find a sighted person to help you set the menus if something has been bumped. You can't ask a subject to assist in setting your menus because that's very unprofessional and they may be computer novices. It could give the impression that you don't know how to run your equipment. The button configuration appears to be well laid out with a ring similar to the Ipod with volume up, volume down and enter in the middle. The Marantz sells for about 300 dollars American, while the Sony comes in at a wapping 500 dollars. I think that the Sony unit has a few bells and whistles such as apitch control and the likes. I'm currently looking at various broadcasting tools, and I've heard that Station Playlist is very accessible. I downloaded a demo of Creator, and it was somewhat friendly. However, I noticed that when I was creating a playlist, it wouldn't show me all of my sub-folders within my music folder after I had selected a tune. It would default to whatever sub-folder I had selected, and no matter what I did, it wouldn't let me see any of the other ones. Do I need Jaws scripts to use it well? And is the Studio software accessible? My guess is that I probably don't necessarily need that, since I'm using Winamp. May not need Creator either, but I thought it might be helpful, since it keeps track of the time for you. I don't have an entire station, just a 2-hour show which will start as soon as I can figure out how to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. JfW tech support advised me to get nvidia g force. If you're going to vista in a couple of years, I'd get 2 gig of ram. Think about at least a 400 watt power supply if you're doing a lot of heavy lifting. There are web sites that sell quiet cases and fans for audio recording. For the price you named, you can get two large hard drives and a cd drive and video burner. Pick your sound card carefully depending on your production work. Just my opinion! HTH Judy -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Missy Hoppe Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2007 6:27 PM To: PC audio discussion list. Subject: new subscriber requesting advice Hello, everyone. First of all, I'd like to sincerely apologize in advance if this message is off-topic for this list. I'm just trying to get as much feedback as possible. I'm preparing to buy a new computer, one that I hope will last me for at least as long as my current system has. The last computer I got was in 2002, and it is still more or less functional, but I'm wanting to get a system that is not only more up-to-date, but also more responsive. I do a lot of work with audio files , mostly mp3 and midi. I also do a lot of web browsing, word processing, and I play a lot of text-based games both on and off line. I've been trying to do my homework with regards to parts to include in my dream system. I've decided that even though it might be a little more expensive, I'd rather hand pick every aspect of my new system to insure that I know exactly what I'm getting and also to insure maximum compatibility with the latest version of JFW professional version. My goals for this system, in order of importance, are maximum stability, maximum responsiveness and as much future proofing as possible. I'm prepared to spend up to $3500 to get everything as nice as possible, but naturally, if I could spend less, that would be really great. For numerous reasons, I'm not planning to upgrade to Windows Vista quite yet; I'm planning to run my new computer using Windows XP media center edition for a year or so. Never-the-less, I'd like this new computer to be completely ready for vista whenever I am. With all that being said, I was hoping that I could get advice from members of this list with regards to my final parts checklist. I'm planning to purchase all my parts from newegg.com some time next month, and then get the system assembled by an expert in my local area. Basicly, what I'm hoping to attain is guidance in making sure that I haven't picked out any blatently incompatible parts, or that I haven't overlooked anything. My primary questions at this point pertain to choosing the most stable motherboard and video card to meet my needs. As much research as I've done over the past couple of months, there are still a lot of things that I don't fully understand. All I know is that I have no plans to overclock my system, especially since JFW can't access the bios, so I would have to rely on someone with vision to do all the playing around, and nobody I know would even have the slightest clue how to do any of that stuff. Further more, I have absolutely no clue what a rade is or what its function would be. I essencially want somebody to be able to put my system together, I install JFW, and then everything will work together as harmoniously as possible. I've got it narrowed down between 2 motherboards: the ABIT AB9 QuadGT and the Intel D975XBX2KR. I'm leaning towards the Abit board only because it supports quad core processors, which tells me that if I ever decide I need to upgrade again in a few years, I will be able to do so without having to buy another motherboard. Has anyone had any experiences with either of these motherboards or ones that are comparable? Which of them is more likely to be compatible with Jaws? As I've already indicated in my introduction,, I'm looking for maximum stability and responsiveness. So, if anyone could provide feedback with regards to which of these two motherboards might be best suited for my needs, I would really appreciate it. My other concern, which is probably more relevant to JFW stability is choosing the most appropriate video card.Does anyone have any recommendations regarding any brands or models of video cards that work really well with the latest version of JAWS Professional 8.0? Are there any brands/models of video cards I should make sure to avoid? Is ATI or Nvidia more compatible with JFW at this point? Should I purchase a dx10 capable card, or can I get by with a significantly less expensive option? These are the only questions that I can think of at the moment, but I'd really appreciate any and all feedback people might be able to provide. This new system is going to be a huge investment for me, so I want to make sure I'm only spending what is strictly necessary to build the best computer system that I possibly can. Thank you all in advance for any assistance you can provide, and I hope that everyone is having
RE: what soft wair to use?
It depends on how much you want to spend and what you need. SoundForge is more powerful and has a much higher learning curve. GoldWave is cheaper and works well. There are good tutorials for both. Are you recording sounds with no need to add special effects or are you wanting to have all sorts of special effects built in to the program? RE: problems with winamp
It could be a bug. Two broadcasters have told me that they find version 5.24 the most stable... You can find it at oldversions or someone may have it. RE: using a mixer
you use it for voice overs and music tracks although you can do it with SoundForge goldwave or studio recorder. You can broadcast without a mixer, but if you want to do a show with two people on mics or use a cd player then a mixer might be nice. I strongly suggest that you google some tutorials on broadcasting and equipment. I've seen several on mics, mixers, and software. Also, basic explanations of bit rates and things like limiters and compressers. These tutorials are all over the web and you should learn as much as you can before you try to choose equipment and software. We are not talking conventional broadcasting here, we are only talking about the internet where the bandwidth is narrow to begin with Whether you use a thousand dollar mike or a fifty dollar mike the end results are going to be the same when you take the available bandwidth into consideration. In order to compensate for the difference in bandwidth some broadcasters will go as far as to ad audio processing to the mix. They will enhance the audio by putting emphasis on certain frequencies giving the impression that one is listening to good audio. With audio processing It is very easy to trick the human ear into thinking that what you are listening too is top notch quality, when in reality we are only masking it. The other day there was a debate about cassette tape verses CD. We have to keep in mind that the faster the tape travels across the heads the better the audio quality. Back in the days of reel to reel tape recorders we had several tape speeds to choose from, 1 and 7 eights, 3 and 3 quarters, 7 and one half, 15, and 30 The laddered two speeds where mainly used by broadcasters. Personally I find the phonograph record to be the best, as there is a fullness and warmth to the sound provided that you don't have a record with a lot of pops on it. The price of mixers and microphones have come down considerably over the years. I can get a good microphone for around 50 dollars and a Barrenger mixer with all of the bells and whistles for about the same. Many broadcasters are now using off the shelf equipment for daily use, as the quality is as good as some of the mid priced commercial stuff. For an example if an off the shelf CD player packs it in you simply throw it away and get a new one, as the labour of repairing it would simply be too expensive In conclusion if one is setting up an internet radio station there is no need to go into deep debt in order to achieve a good sound. One should be able to set up an internet station for well under 500 dollars. Provided that you have a computer your major cost will be the software, and that too is dropping in cost. Hope this helps. . . . . ginal Message - From: Chris Skarstad [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC audio discussion list. pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Tuesday, January 16, 2007 1:44 AM Subject: Re: Clarifying M issue with the 58, was Re: mic My point exactly, Bob. RE: my next question
use an external synthesizer or a second sound card. Again, I would urge you to check the main menu archives or tutorials where you will get a good grounding in broadcasting. You can hear how several programs work and better evaluate your needs and learning curve. Some people will be willing to help you, but you will need to read manuals and help files. Some of these programs take a while to learn. You also need to have a good knowledge of your screen reader. I've had people offer to walk me through set up on difficult programs and then disappear at the last minute. Basically, it's up to you. Lists like these are good, but they can only take you so far... Wile I'll agree that the once off S bomb is nothing to be upset over, I did see some of Lin's messages where he got on people's cases for maybe not taking the time to read the whole page, this that and the other, like everyone has to be as intuitive as he. One of the people who protested the bann said he thought this list was to help people. In Lin's case, he was being somewhat helpful, but in a way that can be a bit offputting, especially for those people who may not be as literate in some forms of computing as other forms. How would you feel if you had a question and you asked, and someone came at you with an answer like, RTFM! Some manuals are as off-putting as some people's additude that everyone should be as smart as the writer who wrote the mannual. Think about that!
