Some Questions About Ripping And Tagging Files

2009-06-24 Thread Pam Drake
Hello All!

I am attempting to rip and tag files for air play on a couple of
Internet radio stations. I have permission from the producers of this
local , which will be marketed through ITunes and Amazon.com, and is
also available on a website with so-so accessibility to the cd store.

I am running a Fujitsu C1410 laptop computer with Windows Service Pack
Three. I have tried both Exact Audio Copy and a beta of CDEx, and I
have a few questions. They have me stymied at the moment but I am sure
with a little clarification I will be able to rip my first cd and send
the files legally to the stations I have in mind.

Now, my questions:
First, with regard to Exact Audio Copy: is it necessary to copy and
burn files to a cd? I really would prefer to have them on my hard
drive, as I already own a legal copy of the cd in question.

Second, in both programs as I attempt to label the files with the
correct audio tags I am asked to enter numbers or integers. I am not
sure what numbers or where. I Do not have the ISRT numbers available to
me, and as these files are going to be aired on not-for-profit streams
where nothing is sold it is my understanding that this information isn't
needed. The producers are going to be selling this album on ITunes and
Amazon so they have the correct information. Do I need this? What do
they want, and how can I edit the title and track information such that
it no longer reads only track number and file information? I have all
the titles, and this cd is not yet available in any of the databases,
having been released less than three weeks ago, June 11th, to be exact.

I am also wondering whether I have the correct Beta version, CDEX 1.70
Beta Two which has a release date of January 4, 2009.

In the documentation for CDEX 1.70 Beta Two there is information
regarding the possible need to install additional drivers. Is it
possible that I need to install these?

Finally, I have Window-Eyes 7.0, JAWS 10.0, and System Access. Is there
any one of these apps that might give more accessibility?

I will keep working on this but would appreciate any information on the
program, especially these issues that don't seem to be easy to find in
the help, at least not for this person who gets more out of verbal
explanation. sigh

Thanks very much in advance.

RE: Some Questions About Ripping And Tagging Files

2009-06-24 Thread Pam Drake
I definitely want a quality recording. Is there a way to avoid having
to burn a cd? What integer numbers could they be asking for in both
programs as I am attempting to number the tracks?

The people who will be using these recordings want MP3 recordings. If I
burned with FLAC would that not be too large a recording for their
purposes?

I don't rip a lot of CD's, but when I do, I use Exact Audio Copy, with
the FLAC encoder, with tons of configuration changes, command line
arguments, etc. My point here is that EAC is very advanced. It is used
by both legal and non-legal music release groups to rip music, as its
quality cannot be beaton. The focus is not, therefore, always on
userbility, but on functionality. CDex is the oppositte. Its not very
widely regarded as being very good at ripping, however this is slightly
untrue. CDex is no way as good as EAC, but its acceptable. In short, if
you are ripping a CD, and you know exactly what quality settings, what
drive settings to use, and other such advanced settings, then go for
EAC. Setup your compression, select all the tracks on the CD, then use
the copy selected trakcscompressed option. You can tag them later on.
If you aren't concerned with fantastic output, and getting the absolute
most out of your rip, go with CDex. The upside to CDex is that you can
pretty much put a CD in the drive, run it and rip.

A Question About Audio Tagging Software, Probably For Someone Who Is Working In A Commercial Setting

2009-06-15 Thread Pam Drake
I am friendly with the members of a local trio who have just released
their own instrumental cd. I want to upload it legally to the Internet
services I know, and have permission to do it.

The leader told me that they are going to be putting it on ITunes and
there is software which will embed the SIRT number into the files so
they are automatically tagged and can be purchased on those sites that
are configured for that.

I'm wondering if any of this software is accessible? Of course I don't
have to go that far but it would be nice if I could help make the music
available in more locations.

I'll be interested in any experience listers may have had with this
aspect of audio tagging and compliance.

As always, thanks in advance.

I might add here that there was absolutely no additional charge for the

Hi listers,

I recently upgraded my system with a new mother board,
processor, and memory. I re-installed my software and am now in the
process of testing and tweaking it to work the way it used to. Sound
taxi professional is presenting major problems. I entered my
registration info, but it put in an activation code that doesn't match
the old stuff, since the machine code is now different. So, when i
tried to use the program, it would only convert 30 second pieces of the
source files. I can't find a number to call and have them help me
rectify the situation. Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully
accepted.

Thanks, in advance for comments.

An Observation About Giveawayoftheday.com

Too bad the giveaway today is not the Gold Wave we know; but
I must say the download and installation went flawlessly. As a first

2009-02-10 Thread Pam Drake
Here's an old message that appeared on Blindtech about the original
machine. I stress that this message refers to the original unit, so I
agree we'll have to wait to see if the player itself is any more
accessible than the original which, according to this message,
concentrates on giving the illusion of reading a hard copy book. The
fact the last person who posted info on this saw only information about
speech output and references to flipping pages, and nothing about access
to the unit by the blind, I'd tend to doubt it has anything more than
the Stream has to recommend it for us; but it will be interesting to see
if I am proven right or wrong.

As far as I'm aware, the Kindle has no TTS, so there is nothing to speak
the menus or print books on the device. It is an Audible-ready device
and will play mp3 files, but if one is going to spend the price of a
Kindle then the VR Stream is in the price range and would provide
significantly more usability to a blind person. The VR Stream is also
Audible-ready and plays mp3 files as well as ogg vorbis and unprotected
WMA files. More importantly, it has TTS to speak the menus and navigate
the files.

The Kindle was primarily designed to be an E-text reader and that's
where its strength and popularity lies. I'm told by sighted folks that
have seen or own a Kindle that the screen really does give the person
the feeling that they are reading a printed book. I understand it has
the largest screen of any of the current E-text readers and that it
really does an amazing job of looking like a printed page rather than an
electronic screen. But that superior technology does nothing for a blind
person. If you just want a device to listen to audiobooks, then there
are many other much, much less expensive options available.

Now, if you have some usable vision and want to be able to read printed
material, then perhaps the Kindle would be a device worth looking at
just for the reasons I stated above: It has one of the largest screens
and has been designed to be very easy on the eyes. I also understand its
font enlargement capability is very good too.

Hope this helps.

RE: Sound taxi and Audible

2009-02-04 Thread Pam Drake
Don and All,

Please forgive if this has been answered before.

You may not be able to convert the file unless you do the conversion on
the same computer on which the file was originally downloaded. In other
words, I tried converting a file sent to me by Dave, and it would not
convert. When I downloaded the same file, then ran Sound Taxi on the
same computer the file converted without a problem. I believe the
program looks for the relationship, or ownership of the .drm key. I
suspect that's the way the company tries to make sure that files are
converted only by those who own them, or purchased them, or borrowed
them.

This is one of the mane draw backs of sound cards that are built in to

Your best bet, is a SOUND BLASTER sound card.

 Hello Pam,
SOUND MAX is not a good sound card.
My DELL system has one in it too as well.
I don't use mine anymore because you can't monitor the live recordings

 and or live chats.
She can either use an internal sound card or an external USB sound
card.
SOUND BLASTER would be a good place to start.
 http://www.soundblaster.com
 is the web address.
 My best regards!

Please forgive the cross post, but we are trying to help a young lady

with a sound card we don't know anything about, and are hoping to
 find

someone on one of these two lists who might be able to assist.

. It is the Soundmax HD Audio card, and came with her Dell desktop
computer. She knows little about the machine, but would like to
 participate in audio chats.

We are working by phone and she is in another city/State, so we're
 flying blind, no pun intended.
We have followed all the usual procedures for a Windows sound card,
but so far nothing is obvious. We believe the mic is muted, and
 can't

figure out how to unmute it. There are two checkboxes whose checked
or unchecked status we don't understand, and there appears to be a
rear speaker recording capability as well. There appear to be jacks
both on the front and rear, and she's not sure which is which. She
says the mic was plugged in at Wal-Mart, but she has not attempted to

do anything with it herself. Dave did have her check the mic and
uncheck the rear speaker, but this did no good. She had sound coming

out of her speakers, but Dave was able to help her silence it.

This is all the information I can offer, so hope it will be enough to

give this lady some help. It appears she received the computer
 system
 with little instruction.

 Thanks in advance.

WMKV's Computer Talk: Was RE: Addendum To My Request For Help With WMKV Podcast On ITunes

2008-12-11 Thread Pam Drake
-Mike

Yes indeed, there are many who might like this show. It was started as
a non-threatening computer forum for seniors, and has developed to the
point where the word Senior has been omitted from the title. They
cover just about everything under the sun in computer technology, and
they are always interested in access issues.

I may have to subscribe, and just keep watch on my hard drive. grin

I've also asked the ITunes users on SAMobile, and so far I haven't
gotten any responses so perhaps getting individual podcasts is just that
much of an issue. In fact, I did subscribe, then unsubscribed. I will
re-subscribe and see if perhaps the individual shows are more visible
then. There are a few I don't get to hear; and I may have even been
subscribed when I listened to the couple of shows I did hear. sigh

Btw, we took a side trip to Reading and met three of the regular hosts,
John, Tom, and Detective Dave Ausdenmoore Aus. We had lunch with them
and found them to be as friendly and fun in person. They're all
volunteers at this radio station operated by a senior citizen's
community.
Thanks.

Several individuals on the WE support list have brought up the
difficulties they have had in obtaining specific given episodes of a
Itunes podcast subscription.
No one, to this point, has offered a workable perfect solution -- it is
hit and miss.
What I would suggest doing -- and this is what I have done -- is to
subscribe to Computer Talk's podcast even though I may listen to the
show live upon occasion.

The best solution would beif you could use another podcatcher, but, in
this instance, iTunes is the only way to grab this particular show.

It's a really neat show, incidentally folks, and worth a listen from 1
to
2 pm Eastern Tuesdays on WMKV Reading, OH (suburban Cincinnati) which
can be found through a number of radio station streaming databases.

The will of God
is never exactly what you expect it to be. It may seem to be much
worse, but in the end it's going to be a lot better and a lot bigger.

I Need Some Help With ITunes

2008-12-10 Thread Pam Drake
I am trying to download one particular podcast. I am a fairly regular
listener to Computer Talk on WMKVFM, so don't want to actually
subscribe. I've been told by the show's producer that there's a way to
play selected episodes, but he is an Apple user and not familiar with
speech technology. I now have Window-Eyes 7.1, the most current System
Access, and JAWS 10 but do not have JTunes.

Can anyone tell me how I go about loading a particular program and
playing it? I'm especially interested in yesterday, Tuesday December
9th. I'm talking with the hosts about coffee makers and wireless
headsets, and there are some urls I want. I have been able to play one
podcast, but can't remember how I did it! I know there are a few ITunes
users out there, and hope they see this.

Hello list,
for any one interested, I put a list of Christmas and Holiday stations
that work with Mundu Radio below my message.
I have tested all of them and only one isn't working at this time. It
may be that the stream is temporarily unavailable.
I put a star/asterisc before the station to identify it.

I set up each line for ease of copying the station name and URL to the
clipboard to make things a bit less teadious.

Enjoy!

Hi Pam,
Mundu Radio is a great application for Symbian phones which is
account-based. You create an account, and then add streams that you want
to listen to. You then load the app on your phone, login to the service,
and choose the station. Note: you need to choose 'Update Playlist' in
the Radio app to make sure the streams you have added show up, but once
you've done that, it works great! It even remembers what was the most
recent station you listened to when you login, along with I think around
5 recent stations in a separate window.

Audio advice for main system: I See More Backgaround Is Needed

2008-11-28 Thread Pam Drake
This is Pam, Dave's other half.

The situation with the stereos is this:

One my unit that I brought to the relationship has quit functioning
entirely. The other which is Dave's has not received stereo on the
radio tuner for several years, with the problem starting a couple of
years after the warranty ran out. They are both, as Dave said, now very
old, one probably 25 years and the other about fourteen. We don't see
the benefit in trying to repair them; and the one without a functioning
stereo option in the tuner is really disappointing.

The speakers are what are in fine shape; as a matter of fact we have two
pairs of speakers.

In other words, we really think it's time to switch. sigh

Ok, I hope that clarifies things a bit. Would that it were as simple as
a new cable connection. sigh

We have two broken down old stereo receivers and a single CD player

 18. And let's not even talk about our old TV. We do have two really
good speakers that I'd like to keep, but am needing some advice on
what's out there for FM stereo dvd's and that sort of thing. Is there

anything that is at least reasonably accessible without having to
 depend on sighted help?

We'd also not want to break the bank.

Hi, Pam. .m3u files are indeed playlists. You can o[pen them in a text
editor to see what the actual files are. It is often then possible to
download those files.

The current main menu archives, available at

http://www2.acbradio.org/mainmenu/shows.php

seem to have download links for easy download.

A quick and dirty approach to getting downloads when the provided link
is an .m3u is this: Use the right mouse button, choice t to copy the
shortcut to the .m3u file. Once it's on the clipboard, use ctrl+o or
ald+d to reach a place in IE where you can paste an address. Paste the
address, then edit the line, replacing m3u with mp3. Hit enter.
Sometimes, you get a download!

I don't completely understand the function and purpose of these files.
When I have wished to download audio files from such places as ACB
Radio's Main Menu and other sources I have not been able to retrieve an
actual file, even with the save as option. It's my understanding that
each time I access a link with this extension the computer is connecting
to the server where the files are stored. I ask myself what would
happen if I wanted to access a file which has been removed. Would I
need to capture the material with Replay or Total Recorder, or is there
a way to retrieve and store the actual data on my own hard drive?
I haven't looked at the new Main Menu site, but even if files can be
directly retrieved from there I would like a more complete explanation
of .m3u files. Are these play lists?

Thanks as always in advance.

RE: Recording quality of victor reader xtreme

2008-10-10 Thread Pam Drake
To amplify on what has been discussed thus far, I can add my own
agreement. Ray has given us a fine sample of a lecture recorded under
less than ideal conditions.

I can say from personal experience that the Stream has made perfectly
adequate recordings of the private Pilates and physical therapy sessions
I have recorded for use at home. True, the class is private so the
instructor and I are working at very close range, but there are times
when I may move away from the Stream, forgetting to pick it up in this
large studio, and there may be other small groups working nearby, and
there is absolutely no problem following the instructions later.

Also, I recorded some committee dinner meetings in which we were working
on publicity for a fine Australian guitarist visiting Visalia. The
conversation was often quite animated, and again, I was able to later
extract the information I needed quite easily. What the Stream did not
record well was a song or two from the rehearsal by the opening band
immediately after the meeting. I did not expect it to record music
well, but decided to let it go just to see what would happen. The
rehearsal was in the next room in the single-family home, and the music
was over-modulated and distorted. Had I used my Edirol R9 or Dave's
Olympus DS50 the quality would certainly have been most adequate for an
on-the-fly recording. We have used those machines for recording music
in party settings. But remember, music wasn't what we were after, nor
is the person seeking to record a lecture, so I must totally agree with
the positive assessments here.

guessing that it would depend on the quality of your mike, but that's
just a guess. I don't want to make a statement I can't back up.

Interesting! Occasionally, this is several years ago When a TV
picture has been really bad you could hear a wildly fluctuating squealy
tone. I have actually been able to satisfactorily tune in the picture
this way for others in the house. You also used to notice the strange
squeal when listening to audio on a scrambled signal before the cable
companies perfected their scrambler technology. Remember watching all
those events on HBO? We didn't care about the picture.

Oops! Don't want to start an off-topic thread so I'll stop this; but

Mike,

Yes, the show is a very fine one. The topics are varied, and some shows
are of more interest than others. As I said, it was originally geared
to the senior, potentially slightly intimidated computer user, so
sometimes the treatment is very simplistic. These guys are not computer
pros, but folks who use the computer in their everyday lives.

As an aside, if you listen to enough of them you'll probably hear me,
Dave, or both of us. We actually visited WMKV last July as we were in
Louisville for the ACB convention, taking a bus up and back to meet them
in Cincinnati.

Having said all this, let me assure all that I receive no money for
plugging the station or their offerings. I just believe in and support
their operation.

WMKV's podcasts must be grabbed with iTunes and cannot be subscribed
with any other podcatcher.
There are extensive archives for the Tuesday Computer Talk show you
mentioned and, using iTunes, was able to grab a whole bunch of them.
The difficulty, at this stage, seems that one has to use WE7's mouse
keys in iTunes for this and a lot of it is hit and miss at this stage.
This, I am certain, will be dealt with either on the iTunes side or
through scripting.
With ITunes and screen readers being a new marriage, time and patience
both in the program's use and getting these issues ironed out is
required.
But yes, archives using iTunes can be grabbed most definitely; and this
appears to be a worthwhile listen.

Old Time Radio And Computer TAlk Show On Itunes

2008-09-28 Thread Pam Drake
For anyone interested, WMKVFM radio in Reading, Ohio makes available its
four-hour weekly OTR program The Big Broadcast available free from the
Itunes Store. They also have a weekly talk and information show called
Computer Talk. This show is aired Tuesday afternoons at 1:00 PM on
their local frequency of 89.3KHZ, streams it on wmkv.org, and also makes
it available free in the Itunes Store. They cover just about every
facet of computers with an emphasis on making information available in a
simple, easy-to-understand way for beginners. It was originally known
as Senior Computer Talk, but the audience is comprised of people of
all ages so the name was shortened.

WMKV is a publicly sponsored station on the campus of Maple Knoll
Communities, a retirement community in Springfield, Ohio, with their
transmitter in Reading. These are suburbs of Cincinnati. Their
programming is largely geared to seniors, but Computer Talk and The Big
Broadcast, as well as other programs, have listeners of all ages.

Enjoy!

RE: Making Recordings Of On-line Audio Files

2008-09-27 Thread Pam Drake
Good thoughts, Mike. I still want a little more control, especially
when there's the possibility I may already have heard whatever the
presentation might be live. I have enough trouble remembering to visit
mailboxes into which I have filtered mail, and if things are too
automatic I may forget. In other words, organization is not my strong
suit. smile

So is there no way to collect items on demand from Itunes? Especially
with a certain program, WMKV Computer Talk from WMKV in Cincinnati, I
try to catch it live and phone in when I can. I can record the repeat
broadcasts with Replay A/V if I want, but a number of months worth of
presentations have been uploaded to the Itunes store and are available
free. I might want to pick and choose, grabbing only those I haven't
heard.

It seems there was a program called Golden Ears which allowed podcasts
to be downloaded on demand and listened to immediately. It was an
option, not the whole premise of the program. I was hoping there'd be
some flexibility with Itunes.

Just my thoughts.

Pam

I both schedule to record and retrieve via podcast far more than I could
ever listen to.
I don't view this as a problem as it opens up the opportunity to listen
to something when and if I want to.
Replay AV, Juice, and iTunes all can be configured to automatically
delete items on a regular basis so this eliminates clutter.
And I do the collecting on an external hd so my main drive is kept
neater.
With all this potential audio, I feel like the proverbial kid in the
candy store.

What I am finding now, thanks to all this audio, is that I do less and
less book reading.

everything,
making the most even of scanty blessings.

Actually, I don't necessarily want every show; and the last time I
subscribed to podcasts I didn't keep up. I got inundated! Of course I
think I was probably less sophisticated then as to what I wanted to
keep; but I am already doing so much recording of audio streams I'm
either not awake to hear or don't have the time to listen to in real
time that I hesitate to schedule things and risk winding up with another
driveful. smile

Am

Steve, that's great! I'm going to take this with me this week.

Pam

There is also a good audio description by a person who has used the Edirol
successfully by reading the display with her Optacon. My old Optie isn't as
sharp as it was but maybe I'll try it myself too. This person does discuss
her chosen settings.

I doubt this is off topic because the Edirol is so usable by the blind that
it's almost customized, and it's the best off-the-shelf recorder we've had
in a long, long while. It's not pc-based but it's definitely accessible
audio. The data can be uploaded to a pc anyway, so I think that, if nothing
else, would qualify it. smile

Here's how I do it: I search for the file to be deleted with the forward and
backward button, then I play a little bit of it and stop. I briefly press
the finder button to go to the finder, this is like Windows explorer. The
last played file is selected. I press enter on it, now I'm in a list of
possible operations like rename. I press down twice to go to the delete
option. I press the record button (enter) twice and this deletes the file. I
think, that one has to press the finder button again to leave the finder.

I downloaded several of the podcasts from blind Cool Tech but don't remember
any actual demos of file deletion. I can't remember the date of the last
file I downloaded but I wonder if there is there any program I'm missing and
should pick up? Has there been anything on the subject uploaded within the
past four weeks or so; just a guess. I believe I downloaded five or six
presentations. Are there other sources for tutorials I can download
quickly?

Thanks in advance to all for any help you may be able to give me.

me.
The Gentlemen at the store let me open a factory sealed box, and let me play
with one to my heart's content. out of the box it was ready to record on
once I put in the SD card and plugged in the power adapter. I was able to
play a recording I made, and with a little help, determined that I could
delete files on the unit itself too. I could monitor what I was doing with a
pair of phones through the headphone jack before I made a recording. I was
pleased with the performance, and next time I go to Hollowood Music, I am
going to get one.

 Jim,

The R09 is definitely very useable. It has menus, but the menus do not
wrap, and there aren't that many of them. There are also some dedicated
switches on the back of the unit that do not require menus. In addition,
all of the controls on the device are logically laid out and very easy to
use. I have had one for about a month now, and love it. I suggest you
head
on over to www.blindcooltech.com and check out some of the several
podcasts
there dealing with the R09. There are a few there done by Neal Ewers that
 are excellent.

Windows Media Player No Longer Works On My Desktop PC

2006-08-14 Thread Pam Drake
Please forgive the cross-post; but this one really has me stumped.

Saturday I closed Windows Media Player 10 on my desktop PC compatible
running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2 on a broadband DSL
connection.

Later that day I attempted to play another stream which launches WMP again
and I received an error saying it could not play the selected media type. I
tried launching another stream with the same result.

I looked in the error information center and then went to check file `types
and settings. I did discover that the use proxy server box was checked.
I certainly hadn't recalled checking it but I unchecked it. Still nothing.

I decided to try playing a stream through ACB Radio's Media Player setup;
and it actually played, but the stream stopped and started. As I write this
I'm wondering if that's because I unchecked the proxy box. I usually play
it through Winamp but have played through Media Player and decided this
would be a test.

Later I closed out the WMP stream and reconnected with Winamp with no
dropouts.

Yesterday I decided to try re-installing WMP10. I un-installed it, allowed
the rollback to Series 9 to take place, and re-installed 10. Wouldn't play.

In desperation I decided to go back to 9 temporarily so I could at least
listen to a stream I wanted to hear at the time. I let the rollback happen,
tried to launch a stream, and once again nothing.

I had been having trouble with a particular stream wherein it either lost a
lot of packets or, once that seemed under control, it suddenly developed a
sound like an off-frequency AM radio station. I don't see how either of
these issues would have had anything to do with WMP itself, but thought I
would mention it just in case someone sees a connection I don't.

I also noticed an application in Control Panel called Windows Media Connect
or something like that, but when I thought I'd try un-installing it to see
if there were any difference the warning said that other programs might be
affected. The programs it mentioned didn't make sense to me, JAWS video
intercept for example, but I didn't want to take a chance of further messing
things up and so didn't install it. This must have come through as a
Windows Update because it's one I don't remember seeing before. Also,
add/remove programs listed it is frequently used, then showed a last used
date of May 20. Go figure if you can, and if you can, please explain this
one to me. puzzled smile

We like several streams which use WMP, so this is really frustrating. I
wonder if anyone has any ideas what I might try next. As Always, any help
would be appreciated.

A Particular Windows Media Stream Is Giving Me Fits!

2006-07-25 Thread Pam Drake
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about the following:

One of my favorite streams is the Internet feed of The Music Of Your Life at
www.musicofyourlife.com. This stream uses the Sonic Tuner. I'm running
Windows XP Professional, sp2 and the problem occurs whether using
Window-Eyes or JAWS.

I warn you in advance that my musical tastes tend to be somewhat retro so if
you go over there please don't pick on me too much. lol lol

For several weeks I have been unable to listen to this stream for more than
a few minutes without numerous dropouts. Yes, I am familiar with Internet
traffic, but this condition is chronic! I do notice that if I go in with
the W/E cursor, which seems to give me more info than the JAWS cursor for
this stream, the percentage of buffering sometimes rises and falls, and
sometimes the music just plain never starts. Once in a while the stream may
even play for a few hours but eventually the connection is lost. When it is
playing there is often a lot of packet loss, with some songs and commercials
either skipping or being almost totally lost.

I can switch to another stream that uses Media Player and it plays just
fine.

I have tried raising buffering time but can't find any way in MP10 to buffer
beyond 60 seconds. I used to use a 120 second buffer for difficult streams
in earlier versions of WMP.

I know they had problems with their stream a few weeks ago but the problems
were either over-modulation or garbled sound, kind of like a badly off-tuned
A.M. receiver on a crowded band. That's the best I can come up as an
explanation. Still, the bad quality streams played.

I have written to the Music Of Your Life contact address but this situation
has not been addressed so far, though they did thank me when I reported the
poor quality reception and let me know when the stream was fixed.

I wonder if there is any way I can tweak Media Player to get a better
connection.

Also, I wonder what some of these values mean that are shown as the stream
in Sonic Tuner is launched. set volume=10, set volume=20, etc., for
example. Is there any adjustment I might make within Sonic Tuner?

If anyone has any thoughts please let me know.

As always, thanks in advance.

Buffering In Media Player 10

2006-06-08 Thread Pam Drake
 vote would have made no
difference to the outcome, I voted in opposition to my belief. Pam chose not
to vote at all on that issue.
In subsequent years, we have completed absentee ballots, initially with the
help of a dear friend, now deceased and more recently we've gone to the
elections office to complete this process. But as of June 6, those methods
have, at least for most elections, been consigned to the history books
thanks to the federal Help America Vote act and to modern technology.
On May 30, one week before the election, we went to the Office of Elections
and were given a thorough demonstration of the machine. A simulated ballot
was presented, depicting a primary election and listing names of signers of
the Declaration Of Independence.
After voting for one candidate on the ballot, Pam wrote herself in as a
candidate for President of the United States, bypassing Benjamin Franklin
and John Adams. The exercise demonstrated not only our ability to cast a
private ballot, but also to write in the name of a candidate should the need
arise.
How it works: Each polling place will have one electronic touch screen
terminal, along with the traditional ballots. This terminal can be operated
via the touch screen or push button panel, depending on one's needs. Anyone
may request and cast an electronic ballot.
For our purposes as blind voters, a little box resembling a VCR's remote
control is attached to the terminal. With the press of a button, vocal
descriptions of the ballot's choices are presented to the voter via an
earphone. The screen is blank during the process. Left and right arrows,
along with a select button allow us to move through the ballot making and
reviewing our selections, and ultimately confirming our desired choices
before officially casting the ballot.
The electronic ballots are stored in memory for counting later.
Additionally, there
is a paper readout available for hand counting, in the event of a recount.
It is our hope that this is the beginning of a new era. As active members of
our community, we look forward to it.
David McElroy and Pam Drake made Tulare County history on Tuesday as the
first blind people in the county to cast their ballots on Election Day at a
polling place without
The assistance of another party. They live in Visalia.

RE: Would someone check this link for me?

2006-05-26 Thread Pam Drake
Hello,

I hope this is not a repeat of some one else's findings. I didn't find any
further messages in the Outlook conversation but by this time you may have
already found the answer to your question.

I located the link and the stream plays just fine.

I saw the homepage and figured I'd better keep looking since you had had
problems. I did not look for a real player stream so am wondering if you
only have the Media Player url now. In any case, the station is very busily
and smoothly playing.

Btw, I'm going to save this message with the url. There are a lot of
intresting sites.

I am wondering whether the WCBSstreams are still active. Last I heard CBS
had gone sports and I thought they had changed format.

Hope this helps you with your troubleshooting.

Pam

The streaming cam page also has its own chat room and hams from around the
world watched, chatted, and enjoyed it the past 3 years.

There are no pop-ups or advertisements. Just something we like to do each
year and have fun. It lets hams take part in ham radio if they are too far
away to travel or health does not permit it.

Please spread the word to other hams and ham clubs.
The more people we have on, the more fun we will have.

Streaming Webcast Schedule

We will be broadcasting from the beginning until the end of the show each
day Friday May 20th through Sunday May 22th from our outside fleamarket
spaces 3350-3351. Please come by and say hello and wave to your loved ones
back home.

550 mile drive and will take us about 10 hours.

We will depart Memphis about 8:00 am CST and arrive Dayton about 7:00 pm
EST. This will be our fourth year to broadcast the drive live.
Chat with us on the chat screen as we drive. Hams from around the world
followed our trip and chatted with us last year. Watch us and try to guess
where we are.

After hamvention, we will be broadcasting our drive back home. Watch for us

VIP Conduit is proud to announce the arrival of The VIP Communicator.

Designed from the start with screen readers in mind, this new
conference

client is a delight to use. Installation is a snap and the sound
quality

in the chat rooms is a pleasure to listen to. The user has full
control

of the amount of

information they wish to receive by using the settings available
to

customize your preferences.

Like to play music in a room for your friends? How about a room
that allows

them to hear your music in full Stereo.

There's no need to install a special program to allow you to
change your

settings to play music. You may now set up the client to do this
with a

couple of keystrokes, and in most cases the client will do this
for you automatically. These are only a few of the many features
you will

find in this outstanding new client which we invite you to come
try for

yourself. Our congratulations and appreciation go out to Barry
Jennings,

designer and developer of Vip Communicator without whose
ingenuity, skill

and generosity this would not have been possible.

Please feel free to pass this on to other lists you may be on.

Nero Version 5.0

2006-05-01 Thread Pam Drake
We have Nero Version 5.0 installed on our computers. We really haven't done
much recording, but Friday I needed to make copies of a file and used the
program. It was easier than I thought. I recorded the cds from a file on
my hard drive.

Yesterday I tried recording the exact same file and had trouble. I tried
burning disks from the file I had made on Friday but couldn't seem to get it
working. I finally copied one of the disks and that worked, but it was
difficult. I couldn't remember what I had done Friday; it was all hunt and
peck so to speak.

I still need to burn two more disks of my file.

During the process of recording I ended up with two disks which just
wouldn't play after I believed I had recorded on them. I remembered seeing
an option in the burn menu to test a disk without burning it. I wanted to
test the two disks to determine whether they were bad or whether I was doing
something wrong; but couldn't find that option.

Are there any tutorials about Nero 5.0? Would it be better to upgrade,
although we aren't really doing a lot of recording, at least for now.

Finally, if someone would be willing to contact me with some suggestions,
maybe even off list, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Please excuse if this is a duplicate. That Autoplay Again

2006-04-30 Thread Pam Drake
Well, at least it's not asking me to insert a disk in a drive I'm not
interested in in the first place; but that little bugger is back, popping up
several times in several minutes. When it does, it cuts me off as I'm
writing and causes all keys not to register. This of course means I have to
go back and fix errors.

I noticed some discussion about autoplay. I think Sharon wanted to enable
it. I really don't need my cd's starting automatically there are times when
I have to hold the shift key to prevent launch.

Should I disable this bugger permanently? Maybe that would solve my problem
once and for all and I can feel free to upgrade my Winamp again. Autoplay
was totally obnoxious for a time and I ended up having to roll back to a
previous Winamp.

Thanks for any thoughts on this matter.

Sad News About A List Member

2006-04-10 Thread Pam Drake
To anyone who knew him and/or followed his posts:

I received word early tonight that Ray Slayton,
[EMAIL PROTECTED], died suddenly and unexpectedly this morning
of an apparent heart attack.

I am not sure whether he was a member of blindtech or to what other
lists he belonged, but he was a frequent contributor to pc-audio.

Ray had been, according to family friends, the picture of health.

Though like so many of us he was a night owl, his wife was shocked to
find that around noon he had not yet awakened. She called 911 and
he was pronounced dead at his home.

I have no further details, but anyone who is interested in future
arrangements may write me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I
will let you know as soon as I receive the info.

I have been in touch with Jonathan and wish to thank him for removing
Ray's address from any lists to which he may be subscribed.

Thank you; and please remember Ray in your thoughts and prayers, or
in whatever manner your spiritual convictions dictate.

Winamp Equalizer: How To Change

2006-04-07 Thread Pam Drake
Well, I never thought I'd need this info because I haven't had trouble
playing any files.

Today I received a disk in the mail containing a tutorial. I launched a
section of the tutorial in Winamp and found the quality very muffled and
almost unlistenable.

I wonder if the disk is defective or if I should try working with the
equalizer? I tried opening the file in Windows Media Player; but it started
in Winamp again.  This is no surprise because Winamp is my default player;
but now I want to try Media Player, at least for this disk. I don't want to
change the default.

I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. I'd hate to have to send
the disk back, but it really is poor, at least on my computer.

Thanks as always in advance.

Play List Popping Up With The Dreaded No Disk In Drive Message.

2006-03-29 Thread Pam Drake
I have noticed a re-appearance of the dreaded no disk in drive
message. It only happened once and this time it disappeared, acting
more like a popup. Why I seem to be getting this thing and no one
else reports it is something I'll never know, except to say I must be
computer accident prone. sigh

I am hesitant to upgrade past Version 5.1.9.

Should I go ahead and upgrade and hope this little bugger or is it a
bug doesn't bit again? I can un-install and go back if necessary,
but I like the fact there are security improvements to the 2.x series.

Thoughts, anyone?

  Ray,

Signing up with Pay Pal is fairly accessible. I say, fairly
because, and this is true of the graphical captchas themselves, the
audio characters you hear will be garbled, kind of like the
  clandestine short-wave radio stations or a twelfth-generation
cassette copy. grin But if you listen carefully, especially for
letterers like B, C, t, D etc. you will be able to sign up just fine.

I almost gave up on it at one time, but I saved the audio file and
set Winamp to repeat until I got the letters figured out.

Once you've been finalized as a Pay Pal member you will be able to
complete transactions with no problem with any screen reader.

A word about signup; what they will do is deposit a small amount,
less than a dollar if I remember correctly, into your bank
account. Once your bank accepts the transaction you will then be
validated with Pay Pal as legitimate and from then you'll be able to
take advantage of all their services.

Re[2]: Beware: AudioMagic, public domain sound editor software...

2006-03-18 Thread Pam Drake
Well, I'm sorry if I unfairly accused an honorable person with the
handle of Jokerdog of being dishonest. I do think he might want to
give his website another name, if in fact he knows anmything about
programming. Somebody might have grabbed that name just because it
would fit what he's doing. That's sad for any legitimate person
using that handle.

I, myself, probably because of my years as a ham radio operator,
don't use any handles. In fact, there's a site where I was asked to
provide a handle. Guess what it was...Nohandles!

That's my opinion, anyway.

Re: pay pal

2006-03-16 Thread Pam Drake

A word about signup; what they will do is deposit a small amount,
less than a dollar if I remember correctly, into your bank
account. Once your bank accepts the transaction you will then be
validated with Pay Pal as legitimate and from then you'll be able to
take advantage of all their services.

easy recorder which was I think discussed here sometimes. Question, has
anyone here tried to get there and review every recorder that that site
offers? If so, can you suggest/tell me if all of them are free? Suggest the
best/free. I want the GoldWave but it's not free I think. I need a free
sound recorder without mentioning the one that is capable for even a simple

RE: pay pal

2006-03-16 Thread Pam Drake
I didn't understand it at first; but the reason they don't make the
recordings understandable is the same reason the graphical ccaptchas,
as they are called, are blurry; a fact I didn't know.

They don't want bots being able to subscribe.

I don't know of any bot that can recognize speech, but there may be
some, or some may be developed, and the folks at Pay Pal and other
subscription services don't want to take that chance.

The term captcha, for those who haven't been following the Google
accessibility verification petition, stands for completely automatic
process to tell computers and humans apart. That pretty much
explains it, I think.

As I posted earlier, I downloaded the verification file, set Winamp
on repeat, and just listened to the thing till I was able to fill
out the proper letters. If you mess up you do get additional
chances. I don't know if there's a limit but I tried it several
times before I finally got it right.

Hth.

Re: Professional quality Ear Plugs For Concerts

Jerry, what types or brands of professional ear plugs did you sell?

I still haven't contacted a gun shop, but will do that.

I'm also wondering if Hobbytron, the vendor of several fm
transmitters, might have some. They sell a lot of hobby products,
including remote-control airplanes and cars. Maybe those things are
noisy enough to warrant earplugs, but I don't know that for
sure. It's at least worth a check.

Professional quality Ear Plugs For Concerts

2006-03-13 Thread Pam Drake
I was talking with a drummer the other night, and he happened to
mention that there are musician's quality ear plugs for lowering db
range while listening to loud music.

Dave and I plan to go to hear one of our favorite bands on Saturday
night; in fact it is the band in which our friend the drummer plays.

The venue is rather small, and we're a little concerned about ear
damage. We don't go to a lot of loud concerts but when we do Dave
has begun to experience temporary hearing loss and I feel as though
something has plugged at least one ear.

We'd like to get high quality ear plugs so we can enjoy the music in
a balanced form without feeling as though our ears are, in fact,
plugged. If I understand our friend, this is what high quality ear plugs do.

Can anyone tell me where I can find a good set of ear plugs, maybe
even on line? We'd like to get them by Saturday so on-line may be
faster with express shipping.

What brands should we look for and how much should we expect to pay
for a good pair?

Thanks in advance.

Mac,

I just called our local music store. They did not have the Sonic
Noise Eliminators; but they do have a brand called Super

are shaped to provide desired db elimination and are used by musicians.

Do these sound similar to the Sonic Noise Eliminators? How many of
the Sonic Noise Eliminators come in a package?

Thanks.

I think that when people write down these version numbers, they are
forgetting to put in zeros where there should be. Nullsoft has this
interesting habbit of releasing versions such as 5.05, 5.091, 5.092
and so on. This would explain that you see people writing down
version numbers like 5.5, 5.94 and so on.
It can be very confusing I agree. But i can tell you with 100%
certainty, that the latest version number is 5.21.
That is the absolute latest version, I promise.
As for pam's problem with the no disc in drive, I'm wondering if it
somehow relates to some kind of other drive that may be connected via
USB or something else. If there is one, and windows is looking for
it and there's nothing there, then that may be something. it's a long
shot, but that's my guess. The only way I know how to temporarily
disable autoplay is to press the shift key when a cd is inserted, but
I don't know how to disable it otherwise. There has to be a way though.

RE: Winamp and That Darned No Disk Message Again

2006-03-06 Thread Pam Drake
Jouie,

Frankly, with what's being going on I'm confused myself.

I started getting a weird message in which Windows was telling me I
had no disk in the drive. Problem is, I didn't intend to be playing
any disk.

I used the wrong version number, but that has been the least of my
problems, except for confusing poor Chris, who has been trying to
help me. In order to try to re-install Winamp I un-installed
everything...the Winamp program, plugins, folders, EVERYTHING! Then
I tried re-installing it again.

The problem is a quirky one and I wouldn't even worry about it if
everything of yours is working as it should.

Chris,

I have gone back to yet another version of Winamp because 5.19 would
not install. I launched acbri, then closed out Winamp and went back
to Windows Media Player to make sure I could still access
mystreams. There are actually a few embedded Media Player streams
but only one has given me trouble. Anyway, the stream took forever
to load, but eventually did.

I hope this episode of media mahem is finally over.

Thanks, at least for now. hopeful grin

Autoplay is a feature that allows cds to play automatically once
inserted into your cd rom drive. I have absolutely no clue why this
would effect Winamp. It plays cds, but all Winamp really does is try
to use the Windows cd player and just routes it through there so you
can operate it via Winamp. In other words, Winamp grabs onto the
functions of the Windows CD player and allows you to use the same
Winamp commands to play your cds. x to play, v to stop, b to move

Again, this shouldn't be happening obviously and it's a bit beyond my

I also find that I must not have known what to select or not, because

If you get a dialogue box asking you if you want to download something
rather than to start playing it, then I believe what might be happening
is that Winamp has not been told to play these streams automatically.
Winamp is a pretty damn good program, but it's not quite smart enough
to know what files that you want it to play, so you must first go into
the preferences with control plus p, find the tree view and find the
section called file types. you should only have to arrow down a couple
of times to get to this. if you press your tab key a couple of times
you should hear select all button. you want to press this so that
Winamp will know that youu want it to play all the file types it can at
least when you install it. After you do this, tab over to the close
button, press the space bar and you should be back at the Winamp
window. Now, try going back to the ACB Radio tuner, or the website and
try listening to one of the stations and I bet you it'll play without
 any problems.
while a station is playing, you can press alt plus i and that station
will be added to your bookmarks, think of these as favorites. you can
 access these at any time.

I hope this clears up a couple of issues. I'm still just as stumped as
you are about the autoplay issue and while it's acting in the way it is.

Winamp and That Darned No Disk Message Again

2006-03-05 Thread Pam Drake
Ok, I have tried several times to re-install Winamp. The last time I
tried Version 1.9 and got that dreaded no disk in drive message
again. No way, I said, and un-installed it.

What could be causing this? I have also seen autoplay pop up in

I also find that I must not have known what to select or not, because

I'd like to get Winamp back. I can't seem to find the title of the
streaming program or song, and I also can't just open Media Player
and go right to a site I just accessed, or at least I don't know
how. Wit Winamp I can go to ACB Radio Interactive or Mainstream or
whatever else. Now I have to go to the ACB site and choose the
stream. Waaah!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Winamp and That Darned No Disk Message Again

2006-03-05 Thread Pam Drake
Chris,

Sheesh! Sheesh! Sheesh! I meant 5.9, not 5.1; and damned if I
didn't write it again! I repeat...sheesh!

So just take away the 1, insert a 5, and you've got my intended message.

Yes, I have been talking about Internet streams, which I am now
playing exclusively in Windows Media Player. As I said, I'd like to
get back to Winamp in order to have the same control of the streams I
once had.

I was very surprised when 5.9 tried to download, rather than play.

Actually, I don't want a couple of the Media Player files checked
because one of our favorite stations is played through an embedded
player and will not play in Winamp, or at least I have had to go back
and uncheck .asx files to get it to stream.

So I guess it's still a mystery; right? It sure is for me. Any more
thoughts gratefully welcomed.

Pam

New Preferences In Winamp5.13

2006-02-23 Thread Pam Drake
The other day I downloaded and installed Winamp 5.13. I have not yet
checked for 5.2, but I did notice that the preferences seemed to be
somewhat different from those I have noticed in the past.
I have usually had to change the preferences in order to play .asx
files in Media Player. When I tried doing that this time I did not
find the same preference selections as I had previously seen, or
perhaps I wasn't on the right menu. .

Are things that much different or am I having a senior moment? sigh

Re[2]: FM Transmitters`

2006-02-21 Thread Pam Drake
Hello,

unless they have changed within the past several years, and the only
changes I have heard about concern the antenna now being a whip
rather than wire, the veronica's frequency is set by means of a
small capacitor, knob to the non-technical among us on the board
itself. We also made sure to set the frequency away from other
stations. You should be able to do that by tuning it to the quietest
place on the dial, which you do by tuning a radio to the same frequency.

I bought an aluminum case from Radio Shack over their 800 telephone
number. I don't have that number handy but I'm sure you could find
it. Check Radioshack.com. I also forget the part number you'll need
but they can help you with that. I found the phone representative
very knowledgeable about what I needed.

While we're on the subject, I read a post yesterday from someone who
said their whip antenna will not remain in place on the
Veronica. Why not contact Veronica.co.uk or possibly call Hobbytron
to see if you need a new antenna or perhaps a new connector.

Hope this helps.

I'm assuming the Veronica transmitters have dipswitches to change the
frequency? If so, is there a nice, easy to read chart for the dipswitch
settings and their corresponding frequencies? I'm thinking of getting
one of the kits and having someone build a custom case for it, although
I don't know what their boxes look like. I was thinking a dicast
aluminum case might work, and I have access to someone who could do that
 for me.

Re[2]: FM Transmitters`

2006-02-21 Thread Pam Drake
I neglected to mention that, though the Veronica does come with a
connector for a 9-Volt battery, I purchased a power supply for it. I
asked the people at Veronica to do this to be sure I had the best one
for avoiding hum. They found me a fine one which is working to this
day, as well as the transmitter.

The transmitter, even as an assembled kit, came to me as a circuit
board with all the components assembled on it. As I said earlier,
you will almost certainly want some kind of metal case in which to
permanently mount it. Before I got the case it would drift off
frequency as soon as I or anyone got near it. After mounting, it has
maintained the same frequency for over four years.

It's very interesting when someone sighted glances at my stereo and
wants to know what's tuned in at 92.6. One friend happened to
mention one day that she liked the station I was playing, but hadn't
been able to find it on her car radio. g I had to tell her she
wouldn't find it, and why.

I was thinking a dicast
aluminum case might work, and I have access to someone who could do that
for me.

You can buy one from the factory in England at veronica.co.uk, or
through a company called Hobbytron at hobbytron.com. Either company

Re: FM Transmitters`

2006-02-20 Thread Pam Drake
I also enjoy the Veronica.

I bought it from the factory about 4-1/2 years ago directly from the
factory in England, but it is now available from hobbytron.com, and
it is already mounted in a case. I bought a metal case from Radio
Shack and had it mounted. You'll probably want to either buy it
mounted or mount it yourself because it is very sensitive to contact
such as bumping on a crowded desk.

Mine is the older model with two leads as an antenna. It has quite a
range, being heard at the end of our block. Now that it is encased
it hasn't drifted once.

No one has ever complained in all this time; and just about anyone in
the neighborhood would know where to complain if they did. We're the
only blind people for at least a mile and are often listening to one
of the ACB Radio streams. The word, blind comes up often enough
it's a dead giveaway. Of course I turn the transmitter off if I am
listening to something that might offend.

I'm behind in my mail. Steve Matzura and I were talking last night,

I don't know what pantallazos are, but I did find a link called
BuiltWithWX and it took me to the WX WIDGETS home page, which,
apparently, is the screen access method they are using. On the WX
WIDGETS page they give a list of names of applications written with
this thing, and Audacity is among them, so if you've gotten Audacity
to work for you with speech, then maybe we're in a little bit of luck.

For those quien no habla espanol, the link on the main page called
Descargas is the downloads link. If you can speak Italian, French,
German, or even Basque, there are translation overlays you can
download, but none for English--yet.

Re: Veronica FM Transmitter frequency changing

2004-11-17 Thread Pam Drake
Jim and Andy,

We have our Veronica plugged into the sound card of my computer. We
chose a cd we know well and used it to test the transmitter after we
chose the quiet spot. The cd we chose was one of the Tim-Life 1970's
set. we chose I Remember You by Frank Ifield (spelling)?. We first
got a very quiet spot on the radio dial, then tuned for speaker
separation. The song has good separation and bass response so we got
an excellent signal which hasn't had to be adjusted in over 3 years.
Sometimes the lead wires get covered by papers on my desk; so when it
starts getting fuzzy I spread the leads out and that takes care of it.
I bought the transmitter without the case and a friend mounted it for
me.

Hi Jim.

Snap! I got mine yesterday; magic, isn't it?

Regarding your question. My brother, who has had one for a few
months,
advised me to tune my radio into an area between stations, then locate
a
screw hole on the base of the Veronica and turn the screw slowly,
until the
signal is picked up in the radio. Probably a job for two people if
your
radio or tuner is some distance from the transmitter. Best try a
quiet song
so you can tune it in closer, if you know what I mean. Get back if
you
experience problems. Incidentally, I ventured into my garden with a
radio
and managed to get about 100 feet before loosing the signal. The
batteries
in the radio are quite low so I'm going to repeat the exercise with
new
batteries.

Best wishes.

Andy from sunny Kilcreggan.

I am trying to work out how to change its transmission frequency.

 Help welcomed!

Re: fm transmitter query

2004-10-25 Thread Pam Drake
I have the Veronica as well as I too am very pleased with it. I have
had it now for over 3 years and it hasn't need re-tuning since
Halloween of 2001. smile

Hi Marco,

I know this isn't what you wanted but a few months ago I bought a 50mw
transmitter made by the Veronica company in the UK. This isn't a USB
transmitter but I am extremely impressed with it. In fact the signal
is so good that it is hard to tell the signal is being transmitted. I
also bought a power supply with the transmitter that filters out some
of the interference. I paid 196 Australian dollars for the
transmitter
and power supply. You can read about this transmitter at
www.veronica.co.uk/50mwsb.htm.

i'm wondering if anyone has used a USB FM transmitter and if so,
whether
they have had good results from them. i'm particularly looking at
purchasing
the USB PLL FM TRANSMITTER which works with all windows platforms, mac
9
and
10 and linux. a detailed description can be found at

Alternative Players

2004-10-04 Thread Pam Drake
I am subscribed to the Real premium service. Can I
use Real Alternative?

I've also heard talk of a Quicktime alternative player. I haven't had
good luck with Quicktime. Has anyone had success with the
alternative? On Mon, 04 Oct 2004 21:45:03 +1000, you wrote:

Is There Any Reason Why A CD Recorded Overseas Won't Play on a U.S. Player orVise Versa?

2004-04-19 Thread Pam Drake
Dave's stepmother bought a cd in Ecuador and wanted to play it for us
before giving it to her granddaughter as a graduation gift. The disk
was bought at a school for blind and disabled students who performed
the Spanish music as part of a tour taken by Dave's stepmom and her
group.

When she put it into her very old cd player it seemed to spin but
wouldn't load. We offered to burn a copy or at least see if it would
play on our own player. When we got back home from our visit with her
we discovered that she somehow managed to give us the wrong disk.
When we called to tell her we needed to go back to exchange the one we
had for the correct one, she said that some of her granddaughter's
friends had experienced the same problem.

I'm wondering if the disk was home-made in the first place, so to
speak.

Has anyone heard of such a situation?

Pam

Re: Is There Any Reason Why A CD Recorded Overseas Won't Play on a U.S.Player orVise Versa?

2004-04-19 Thread Pam Drake
Aman,

Thanks. Now if we can convince Dave's stepmother that we may have a
chance of retrieving this data. Oh, if we could only have known that
she had put the wrong disk in the jewel case. sigh

Now, please tell me about recovery software. This will be a whole new
experience, other than the burning of course.

Hi.
The CD format is worldwide. It's possible that whoever was
burning
it didn't finalize it, that it's a CDRW (they won't play on most
standard CD
players), that the disk itself is bad, or a number of other things.
However,
these things could just as well happen to a disk recorded down the
street. I
think your idea is a good one. Get it into a CD-rom and try to get the
audio
off it as data. If it's bad in itself, use recovery software to get
the data
off it.
