Searching Records

2015-07-22 Thread roger.south
Good Morning

Some while ago I put all my music onto an external hard drive. Last night I was
asked to play a specific track that I know I have in one of the many, many
various artistes discs I have but I just cannot remember which one. A simple
search would find it but I just cannot work out how. Some advice would but very
much appreciated please.

The 2 programs I mention are the only ones I know that will convert .aa
files and neither are free.

Hi,

How and where can I convert these files for free? I did not get the
message properly and at my end there appears to be some problem.
Please.

With best wishes,

SoundTaxi is an overnight job taking several (3 -5 hours) and has all the

Re: re converting audible files

Hello Brian

I'm sorry but I gave the incorrect program name. On checking I find it's
really dbPoweramp and the url is:

https://www.dbpoweramp.com/

Yu will find it does a lot more than just converting .aa files but that is
all I use it for.

Hi roger, i am already using sound taxi, and i agree with you, it
takes its time. the only thing good about it, is that it wil do
several files at the same time. i also use victor stream. where do i
get dpower. i have no objection to paying for what i want. brian.

If I understand you correctly region issues apply with the format of DVD's
These are music CD's so should not apply. they were purchased in the UK from
a UK branch of a US Company.

Also in 4 or 5 assorted portable players I have or have had in the house.

I don't know the program you mention but I've tried several others, CDEex,
Express Rip, Goldwave, SoundTaxi and dPover to name a few and apart from my
PC not recognising I have a CD in the drive it will not accept the disc
exists when I try to add it in the program. My personal opinion is the discs
are of a type the computer will not work with and not just mine as I've
tried them in my wife's and both my sons' machines all to the same results.

2014-08-24 Thread roger.south

Good Morning Walter

Done that and it worked up to a point. For another disc it's just fine but
for this one it seems it's not on the database so no details are
forthcoming. I'll have to look at MP3Tag I think it is and see what that can
do for me or, if all else fails, type the name and artist of each track
individually. 3 disc of around 24 tracks each. Keep me out of mischief for a
while. LOL

However many thanks for your help.

Hi Roger. Well, they must have changed things. I said to launch CDEX and
press F4 and then shift tab, I made a mistake, you have to control tab
twice. When you press F4 you do land on the encoding tab but if you do a
control and tab twice you should get there. I'm using version 1.51 and if I
have a copy here I can send it. If I get a chance in the next few days I'll
try and get hold of 1.70 and compare it with 1.51. Sorry if I confused you

SoundTaxi DRM Protection

2014-02-25 Thread roger.south
Running Win7 64bit Home Premium

I while ago I decided to dump my CD collection and copy them onto an external
hard drive. All went well until I came to a set of 12 Classic Jazz discs I had
purchased from Time Life Music. It appears they are DRM protected and nothing
would shift them. I trawled through the internet and found a site that said
that SoundTaxi would do the job. I have the pro version of this program
installed so have spent the last couple of hours trying to work out how to do
it with no success. SoundTaxi puts up a disclaimer stating it will not tolerate
any illegal use. I am well within the law as I purchased the discs legally and
am copying them to my own PC system for my own use only. (literally as the wife
hates jazz with a passion. There’s some funny people about!! LOL)

Obviously I’m not doing something right. Can anyone help me please.

Just a note, the DMCA, if you live in the states, does not let you
decrypt discs, even for your own personal use. This is one of the
reasons why the DMCA needs to be rewritten!

2013-09-08 Thread roger.south
Around 3/4 years ago I transferred both mine and my wife's CD collection to
external hard drives. Certainly not as high tech as are being discussed
here. I purchased a Magix Audio Cleaning Lab program very cheaply for, in
your currency, around $15 and connected an ordinary CD player via the
headphones socket to my soundcard and spent weeks slowly working through the
pile of almost a thousand cassettes. I had the player and also the 3.5 mm
male to male audio cable so my total outlay was minimal. I didn't know about
Audicity then so could have saved that modest outlay if I'd heard of it. I
get the impression some people seem to look for the complicated way rather
than the simple one. Usually ends up saving cash.

you need a trnsfer cable, which I think comes with the device. You put
your tape in, hit a hot key on adacity or whtever program you choose to

It took me a bit of time to figure it all out but once I did, it worked

It's very to do it with cdburnerxp.

Did you find a solution? I have the same problem. Followed tips on the
Winamp forum and still Winamp can't find decoders for ripping.

I am finding some programs that only seem to be available in MKV, and I'm
pretty sure Replay Converter doesn't support this format. Is there anything
out there that is accessible and that will take the video off files with an
MKV extension?

Thanks.

Re: removing vocal from music

2013-05-16 Thread roger.south

Hi Andre

Wouldn't be too quick to say no as when Buddy Holly died in 1958 they found
piles of multi track tapes of his work that were rearranged and released. A
friend who ran a band and studio from 61 until 68 was doing multi track all
that time. Rob mentioned Audacity and that, I believe, is free. Keep
yourself amused by downloading it and playing about with it.

Rob

Thanx very interesting.

My question is then this: Would you then be able to do the same kind of
things with arrangements recorded in the 50s or 60s?

Imagine being able to sing along with the Jordanaires or the Anita Curr
singers!!

I suppose not!

Good evening André, Roger and list,

Roger is correct in that pretty much all professionally produced CD's and
the new vinyls are recorded in a multi-track format. As to recording and
editing software, there are several audio packages that offer multi-track
capabilities. Some of these applications include Audacity which is a free
download, Reaper, which is a very moderately priced package which costs in
the $35 to $40 range, and Sonar, which is a high end multi-track sound
editor which is often used by professional recording studios. To give equal
coverage to avid Mac users, there are Mac-based multi-track editors as well.
I believe one of these is called Cakewalk and Studio Garage Band or
something simllar to that also.

About all of these sound editors will enable the user to solo individual
tracks or listen to the full mix. I provide this explanation as I think it
makes it easier to envision that eliminating specified tracks is by no means
a technically difficult task. So happy karaoke time.

Best regards,
Rob Tabor

A friend, before he died, make his living singing with a portable karaoke
machine and he used the type of software you describe to strip the vocals
off of CD's. I understand the CD's have the vocals in a different track to
the music so it is relatively easy for software to achieve this. Remember a
lot of music CD's are compiled with each instrument, sound effect and vocal
being on a different track and synchronised and put together for the
finished result.

I’m just curious.

On the internet I see software advertised that is supposed to be able to
remove the vocals from a track so that you can use it for karaoke.

I must confess I am rather sceptical about these claims? But is this
actually possible?

Re: Recording level in Goldwave

2013-05-12 Thread roger.south

Hi Howard

I’ve been putting my CD collection onto an external hard drive using CDEx
and found a set I bought that is heavily protected and will not allow this.
The discs will play in a non-pc CD player but not on any computer player,
so the intention is to hook a CD player up to the PC sound card and add the
CD's to the hard drive that way as we did when transferring the cassette
and vinyl collections. I used Magic Audio Lab for this then but no longer
have that software, even if I did it may not be compatible with Win 7 anyway
so the intention was to use Goldwave. Except I don’t know how, seeing your
post tells me you obviously do so could you give me a quick tutorial on how
it is to be done, please.

Many thanks Roger

I've been ripping my LPs, open reels, and cassettes to .wav files using
GoldWave. The volume level of the resulting files vary by quite a bit. I
can't get an idea of just how much until I finish editing and convert them
to mp3 files. I then use MP3Gain to get them to the level I want. Not
really understanding the measure of level in decabels, I just make them all
94 which sounds ok to me and is close to how loud my JAWS with Eloquence
talks.

I'm wondering if there's a way that I can tell earlier in the process if I
need to raise or lower the recording level in GoldWave?

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi,

It does sound like some kind of protection system. I'm not sure what method
of protection would give this but I'm guessing it may be something called
multi-session disc.

I wouldn't know how to brake this protection but you could use a regular cd
player with a sound card to record the tracks as wave or mp3 to your pc by
connecting the output of your cd player to the input of your sound card and
use an audio recorder program like audasity or sound forge.

Hello

A few years ago I purchased a set of 12 double disc albums called
ClassicJazz from Time Life. I’ve played them often on a CD player in the
room I keep my PC. That has now been removed and all music is played on my
pC with the surround sound it’s hooked into. I decided to load all my
music onto an external hard drive and get rid of the discs. I found these
jazz discs will not load into the PC player. Going to My Computer the CD
drive shows as empty. The same is true of my wife’s laptop and my son’s PC
and laptop but any player except one connected to a computer will play
them with no problems. I’ve contacted Time Life and find the UK site no
longer exists. Therefore I dealt with the US Company. The ClassicJazz
series is no longer sold. I received a response to my email asking me to
phone them. I replied saying I’m located in the Uk and have heard no more
from them.

I seem to remember Sony brought out an anti copying method which sound
like what I’m experiencing here. I seem to also remember it was said you
could break this protection by rubbing a felt tip pen round the edge of
the disc. I’ve tried this to no avail. I could bring back a CD player into
this room and fit it into the sound system just to play this one set of
discs but I’d much rather have them all on my hard drive. Has anyone any
ideas to help me, please?
