Re: Advice wanted on USB speakers

2011-03-20 Thread Barry Chapman
Thanks Bob.

I was eventually able to track down some Rock 302G speakers from Austin
Computers in Perth, Western Australia, but I got the last
ones they had. There are a number of sites which still have them listed, but
none of the others I contacted had them in stock, and
the manufacturer say they are discontinued, so I don't think they will ever be
getting any in. Before I was able to get the Rock
speakers, I bought the Logitech LS150 which don't sound too bad, but probably
not quite as good as the Rock 302G. Still the
Logitech ones are streets ahead of some others I have heard.

I know some have suggested that ones connected to the mains have more output
power and this is true, but I wanted something which I
could use outside without having to worry about external power or speaker
batteries.

I tried the site you suggested, but couldn't get anything useful from it using
JAWS.

Thanks,
Barry Chapman

Hi Barry. I just heard about a new totally digital streeming speaker that
isusb powered. They claim they can get more volume without distortion by
keeping the signal digital right to the amp. They are sold through Apple
stores online so probably will be in stores to check out. I'm hoping our
local dealer will have some so I can chec them out.
Palo Alto Audio Design Musik Digital

Palo Alto Audio has 2 models; Musik M u s i k
and
Cubik C u b i k. The latter use external power and should be more powerful.

There web page is hard to use but here it is:
www.paloaltoaudio.com

I started out looking for those Rock speakers. It appears only sites that
have them are in Australia.

Yamaha also used to make a usb power speaker that was claimed to have
greater volume because it was an all digital design but I don't have info on
them now.

If its the pair I'm thinking of then they are "Power Assisted" meaning
that they plug into an AC outlet, as I recall Barry wanted something which
was powered entirely from the USB port, the Logitech LS150 speakers are
such a kind, not much amplification but then again! not much power can be
had from a USB port.

The speakers you refer to at the Apple store are very good and I'll be
purchasing a pair myself shortly.

Well despite what you say, as mentioned in my message, the Rock 302G
speakers sound remarkably good for their size and I would be
happy if I could get something else that sounded as good. Most of the USB
speakers are aimed at the cheap end of the market (around
$20 or so) and all that I have heard so far other than the Rock 302G are a
heap of junk.

Well in my experience with USB speakers you're not going to have all your
criteria met particularly when it comes to your third

point.

USB ports from a computer only give a very small amount of power and in
some cases hardly any at all, that's why USB hubs come with

power supplies to make more power available.

Hard drives for example only take a fraction of power that USB speakers
may require and even then! USB ports may not have enough

power to run them properly.

RE: Advice wanted on USB speakers

2011-02-23 Thread Hamit Campos
The ones I have which are the Bose Companion 5 multi media speakers do meet
2 of the things you need. They sound really good for speakers that are kind
of small, and you only use the USB for the audio output. Sadly though you do
nead to plug them into the wall. Other then that they are pretty good. They
are a 3 peace surround sound system.

Please can anyone advice me of USB computer speakers which meet the
following criteria.

1. Must be powered via USB.

2. The sound source must be via USB, that is, not a separate lead into the
audio output jack of the computer.

3. The sound quality must be good with a reasonable amount of base.

I have one set which satisfy my requirements, but am wanting to buy another
set. The ones I have are the Rock USB speakers 302G,
but they apparently have been discontinued.

I purchased a different set on spec over the Internet, the Gigabyte GP-S4600
2.0 Speaker - USB Bus-Powered Audio System, but didn't
discover until I received them that only the power is via the USB port.
Apart from this, to adequately describe what I think of the
sound quality, I would need to use language which is not suitable for the
list.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Barry Chapman

There are two bookmark files. They are winamp.bm and Winamp.bm8.

If using Windows XP, you will find them in C:\Documents and Settings\your
name\Application Data\Winamp

The path is a little different for Windows 7.

Hi, does any one know where they hid the bookmark file in the later
versions of winamp.
There must be some way around this?.

Re: Advice wanted on USB speakers

2011-02-23 Thread Dane Trethowan
I disagree as you've just proved my points in my opinion.

You talk of the cheap USB speakers at $20.00 being a load of junk? Well their's
no disputing that but have you heard a cheap $20.00 pair of speakers these days
that connect to a sound card or Ipod and which are powered by mains power? I
think you'll be quite impressed, no doubt about it we own the computer industry
a lot when it comes to the way speakers have progressed in the last 10 or so
years.

I bought a $20.00 pair of Logitech 2.1 speakers not long ago, the sound out of
those is just fantastic.

Now getting back to the topic of USB speakers? I have a set of USB speakers
here which I use for my Mac, wonderful things but they are powered by mains
power though the computer recognises them as a sound card or device, 100 watts
per channel and you certainly won't! get that amount of power through a USB
port alone if its going to provide power to your speakers.

Re: Advice wanted on USB speakers

2011-02-23 Thread Barry Chapman
Well despite what you say, as mentioned in my message, the Rock 302G speakers
sound remarkably good for their size and I would be
happy if I could get something else that sounded as good. Most of the USB
speakers are aimed at the cheap end of the market (around
$20 or so) and all that I have heard so far other than the Rock 302G are a heap
of junk.

Well in my experience with USB speakers you're not going to have all your
criteria met particularly when it comes to your third
point.

USB ports from a computer only give a very small amount of power and in some
cases hardly any at all, that's why USB hubs come with
power supplies to make more power available.

Hard drives for example only take a fraction of power that USB speakers may
require and even then! USB ports may not have enough
power to run them properly.

Advice wanted on USB speakers

2011-02-23 Thread Barry Chapman
Please can anyone advice me of USB computer speakers which meet the following
criteria.

I purchased a different set on spec over the Internet, the Gigabyte GP-S4600

discover until I received them that only the power is via the USB port. Apart
from this, to adequately describe what I think of the
sound quality, I would need to use language which is not suitable for the list.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
