Oops? That's my fault Tom. I didn't even think that this was only an audio
related list. Selectively hearing the PC part of PC Audio, I was thinking
that the list had to do with most any PC related subject. An honest
oversight on my part.

Again, sory for that.

It would be great if there could be a handheld scanner; that way, I can move
it down the page and get the scan necessary and may be scan a book a bit

Presently, I'm trying to put a Canon all-in-one to the test; the ImageClass
series will let me scan up to 50 pages at once! It will scan both sides of
a page, but i do have to remove the cover of the book first. That's the bad

Dave,

Try the cannon range. under 100 dolars, will scan an a4 in ten seconds. The
lower in price the longer the scan time.

Optic book 3600 is also worth a look, 200 dolars for that baby, but it is quick.

Docuscan plus is not a scanner. It is an in the cloud scanning program
that costs 300 bucks, and you still need a scanner with it. Given the
uncertain state of serotek and the fact that this is all done in the
cloud, I would not personally touch that program with a 10-ft pole at
this time. The opticbook 3800 is a good bookedge scanner. If you mostly
want to scan books, that's a good one. But you will still need an
accessible piece of software to go with it. Abbyy Fine Reader pro for
Windows is said to be accessible, although I have no personal
experience with it. The software that comes with the opticbook scanners
is worthless from an accessibility point of view. You can try a free
demo of the above-mentioned docuscan plus to see if it meets your
needs, as you can try a demo of abbyy FR pro, which costs less and
gives you way more control, and more languages, than docuscan. There is
also k1000 and Openbook, but those programs cost considerably more;
they offer many more features and are designed for the blind. So if
that's your cup of tea, then go for it. K1000 just released version 14
with the latest versions of the engines from abbyy and scansoft.

I will be obtaining an OpticBook 4800 for flatbed scanning, as it is scans
very quickly. I would not recommend the A300, unless you plan to use it in
a learning resource centre or similar information centre. Also, it should
be noted that you will need to proofread what you are scanning, as even the
best scanners sometimes make nonsense of a book.

I have the Canon Lide 700F but that may be more than you need.

Remember that effective OCR is more dependent on the OCR software than the
scanner. Just about any scanner can produce a grey scale 400 dots per inch
image, which is about the optimum for effective recognition.

I would suggest either the Canon Lide 110 or the Canon Image Formula 280
portable scanner.

Details of those scanners are as follows:

Canon LIDE110 Flatbed Scanner - 2400x4800dpi, 48bit, Advanced Z-Lid - USB2.0

2400 x 4800 dpi optical resolution with 48-bit colour depth for sharp,

Compact and stylish design.
Scan multiple photos as once using Multi-Scan mode.
Single USB lead transfers data and provides power keeping your desk clutter
free.
Advanced Z-Lid accommodates scanning of bulky items such as books with ease.

Use scanner on either PC or Mac for stunning results.

 Hi John,
You can obtain an accessible scanner from www.Serotek.com. They have
one called DocuScan Plus. It's heard to be very accurate and you can
scan books or any printed materials with it. The coolest thing about
it is, that you can even save the stuff you scan as a braille file,
that you can either copy to your braille notetaker, if you have one,
or send it to a braille printer if you have one. one.
 Mike
Rochester, NY. You can get more information about it and you can
contact the company using the information provided on their website.

 Hi.

Looking for your advice and recommendations on the following.

I am in need of a good flatbed scanner that scans fast and accurately.
Someone on one of the lists mentioned that the Plustek Optecbook
flatbed scanner is good for scanning books which is what I will be doing a
lot of.

I use JAWS, Windo-Eyes and NVDA.

 Thanks for any Helpful suggestions,

 Blessings,

 John

RE: Flatbed scanner

2015-01-08 Thread John Chilelli
Hi all,

I want to thank everyone who has offered some input on my search for a good
flatbed scanner.

Unless someone has a serious concern about it, I think I am setteling on the
Opticbook 3800 for my scanning needs. It's a little pricey, but it's a
bookedge scanner and I will primarily be scanning a lot of books here.

In case I didn't mention it, I will be using OpenBook 9 on a 32 bit Win 7
machine for my OCR results.

The reason I said I needed a good and accurate flatbed scanner, is because I
don't have anyone at this time to proofread my scanned books. So image
quality is of corse very important.

Thanks again all, and please pipe up if you feel I'm making a big mistake on
this one.

John

There is
also k1000 and Openbook, but those programs cost considerably more;
they offer many more features and are designed for the blind. So if
that's your cup of tea, then go for it. K1000 just released version 14
with the latest versions of the engines from abbyy and scansoft.
