Good summary.

I should also add that one of those open commands is possibly one of the most
powerful commands in VLC as it allows the user to open pretty much anything, an
audio CD, files on a computer, on a network drive or even an Internet Radio
stream.

Re: VLC media player shortcut keys

2015-12-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
A couple of other things Windows muses might like to bare in mind with VLC
which make life one hell of a lot easier when you’re dealing with a whole heap
of files.

Have a folder of a few hundred files you want to add to a playlist? go into
File Explorer, select the files you want and then select “Add To VLC Playlist”
from the context menu.

VLC will start playing the selected files after a few moments.

From here you can obviously “Save As Playlist” if you like so the playlist will
be available for you next time you wish to hear it.

It will play just about everything, but it's mostly for video formats. I
wouldn't recommend it for your audio files as it's just not really designed
with the flexibility to make playlists and such that, Winamp, and probably
foobar as well, has in abundance.

As for whether it works with screenreaderswell, yes. Documentation is a
little sparse, though. There is a list of keyboard commands somewhere and
the programme is entirely usable via keyboard. Don't expect a great deal of
voice feedback, though. However, if you want to play videos, VLC is pretty
much the best solution out there...no need to hunt around for codecs..it's
played everything I've thrown at it from weirdly encoded MKVs to DVDs.

Listers,

Does VLC Media Player work with screen readers? If so, where may I go to
learn how to use the player? I hear that it plays everything. I mean just
about all extensions.

That's odd. What do you mean when you say they won't play right? Do they
play at all? Can you not get into full screen mode? I don't actually know a
lot about the programme...I just use it to play videos and it's never had
any issues at all with that, but winamp is my go-to player for audio.

lot of options at our disposal, something which, if you'll forgive me, a
good number of visually impaired people don't seem to realise or care about.
Personally I adore winamp's audio flexibility but have found it pretty
unhelpful when it comes to playing video files, even when I think I might
have downloaded the right codecs and have the newest versions, etc...so
that's what I use VLC for and it's never failed me...I have a lot of obscure

Re: VLC Media Player?

2013-06-24 Thread Dane Trethowan
I agree with you absolutely on this.

I suppose I use VLC a lot due to the fact that I use computers on multiple
platforms, I have Mac machines and I use OSX, I use machines that run LYNUX and
of course I use Windows, VLC is an open source multi platform player.

Again this is personal experience but I've found Winamp to be very bloated and
I've had it crash quite frequently on my Windows machines here so those reasons
alone steered me away from the software.

I know others who are more than happy to use Windows Media Player and who can
blame them as the software - from the little I've played with it - seems very
user friendly indeed but the unfortunate part is that Windows Media Player
doesn't seem to support all the audio formats that VLC does.

Anyway as has been stated, you have heaps of options at your fingertips so use
what's best for you.

formats. I wouldn't recommend it for your audio files as it's just
not really designed with the flexibility to make playlists and
such that, Winamp, and probably foobar as well, has in abundance.

As for whether it works with screenreaderswell,
yes. Documentation is a little sparse, though. There is a list of
keyboard commands somewhere and the programme is entirely usable
via keyboard. Don't expect a great deal of voice feedback,
though. However, if you want to play videos, VLC is pretty much
the best solution out there...no need to hunt around for
codecs..it's played everything I've thrown at it from weirdly
  encoded MKVs to DVDs.

Hm. Whatever works, then. I've never had any such problem with VLC, nor have
I seen it happen on any other machine. But there's always something that can
go wrong, and I'm not a technical expert. They probably have a forum for
troubleshooting, as winamp does.

JAWS must support QT to some extent since I can use both TapinRadio and
Kindle for PC with Accessibility Plug-In with it.

Hello everyone,
Does anyone know where I can find an audio tutorial that demonstrates
using vlc media player? I know that Blind Cool tech had someone record
a two-part podcast about it back in 2006, but as with many of their
podcast links, the links no longer work. So, I was just wondering, if
there were any audio tutorials regarding the use of this software
available anywhere online. Thanks.

Certainly, space for play/pause, n for next and P for previous, the cursor
keys in combination with alt and other keys perform different steps when
 cue/reviewing through tracks.

Ok, here's where you'll find a whole heap of documentation on VLC, go to
 the
VLC item in the program group and select documentation, you'll be taken
 to
the VLC documentation web page, I've just downloaded the PDF manual so I'm
 about to plough through that.

I installed VLC, to give it a test drive.

Can anyone tell me how to select an output device other than the Windows
default device? In the preferences, under audio, I find a device selection
spinbox. But the choices in the spinbox are just numerals, not names of the
soundcard I want to select from.

If I'm going to give this thing a fair test, I'll have to play it through my
good card and speakers, not the el cheapos that I use for JAWS, and that are
my system default.

Re: VLC Media Player command line options.

2005-09-13 Thread Michael Lang
Jim, you wrote:

Has anyone had any success in using the various command line options

I use mplayer, which is another multiplatform project. I like its
command line interface. With it, I can start streaming radio stations
with batch files. I've installed the Windows standard codecs and can
play RealAudio, Windows media, MP3 and a couple of other formats. I
often use the player with my DOS Braille display driver under Windows
ME, because JAWS isn't so good when it comes to console mode programs.
Here's an example batch file, which plays the BBC Radio 4 stream:

mplayer rtsp://rmlivev8.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/radio4/live/r4_dsat_g2.ra
