Hello audio enthusiasts, I wanted to provide my experience and comments regarding the USB FM transmitter. Set up was very easy, and I am so impressed with the sound. We have a split level home with 4 levels and it sounds great on every level. I listened to the broadcast on a home component system, 15 year old boom box, cheaper newer boombox and an older clock radio. The sound is fantastic, very rich in highs and lows. Hi Fred, I installed one of these units last night and after a bit of a wrestle got it to work on a PC using Windows XP and JFW 5.1. 1.Make sure you turn off JFW (or any other screen reader), before connecting to the PC USB port. This is because, once the connection is made, the default player in your audio devices changes to USB Speakers. The screen reader must be started after this happens or it locks up because the default player has changed. One advantage to having one of these is that it doesn't connect via usb interface, therebye making it possible to plug it into an mp3 player, an otis, a nuvo, a computer, etc, etc. Rusty Does anyone know the output power of the transmitter? I am very interested in this type of product. I have a concern though. How problematic is this type of equipment in an apartment setting where all my neighbors are within 200 ft of the computer? Hi Shannon, That is a very legitimate concern. While it is possible, it may not be probable, because the frequencies being used by the transmitter, are selected to fall between the commercial broadcast frequencies. And I have found that if the transmitter is set to a frequency on the low band, most of the commercial broadcasts in that range are usually public radio, and smaller stations. However, you can lessen your concern by looking for a transmitter with a much shorter range. Who will hear your transmission, will be determined by what stations your neighbors listen to. In your particular situation, if you do acquire a transmitter, I would not share that imformation with the neighbors. Some might choose to seek out the frequency you are using. I'm not trying to put a scare into you, or talk you out of getting a transmitter, I am just looking at possible problems that can occur in this not so safe world we live in today. I would look around for a transmitter with a shorter range, taking into consideration, the size of your apartment, and the fact that when a signal has to passthru any obstructions, this will diminish the range slightly. Hi Peter, I can't say for sure about the USB transmitter, as to exactly what features and functions it has. I do not have a USB transmitter, I just have an FM transmitter connected to my computer. If you have 2 soundcards, whatever sound comes thru the soundcard that the transmitter is connected to will be transmitted. It seems to me, that if you have a USB transmitter connected to the computer, any sound from the computer will be transmitted. I was merely demonstrating to Shannon the possibilities of what can be accomplished by using a transmitter. Some transmitters come pre-tuned to a specific frequency, most others however, can be tuned to one of usually 7 frequencies, on either a low, or high range. Frequency selection is usually handled thru the use of dp switches, or a small tuning screw. Some transmitters can be set to boost the output, but most of the ones sold in the US, may not have this feature due to FCC regulations. It would be best to compare several transmitters, looking for the features of particular interest to you. You could always run the output of one sound card into the input of the other then have the output of that one connected to the transmitter. Richard, You are right that sounds pretty cool. I can listen to every noise my computer makes no matter where I am in the house? It doesn't get much better than that. I have to set the speakers in the window of the bedroom to hear it in the kitchen with the door open. It is getting too cold to cook and listen. Smile. Hi Shannon, I forgot to mention that if you have one of those headset FM radios you can tune it to the same frequency as your transmitter, and listen in private anywhere within the range of the transmitter. I am using 2 soundcards on my computer, and have the transmitter plugged into 1 and Jaws comes across the other, so while I'm working at the computer, I can hear Jaws on the PC speakers, and have music at a lower volume coming through the transmitter to my FM radio. Then when I get up from the computer, I just take the radio with me. This configuration allows me to work at the computer and hear Jaws, while my family listens to music from my computer, without having to listen to Jaws. I can also listen to the TV anywhere in the house, whether it is a TV station, video tape, or DVD. I hope you can get a transmitter, you'll have fun. Richard, Did I understand correctly, you have TV capabilities on your computer? or do you mean that you have one of these transmitters on your TV? If it is on the computer how did you do that? I am using 2 soundcards on my computer, and have the transmitter plugged into 1 and Jaws comes across the other, so while I'm working at the computer, I can hear Jaws on the PC speakers, and have music at a lower volume coming through the transmitter to my FM radio. Then when I get up from the computer, I just take the radio with me. This configuration allows me to work at the computer and hear Jaws, while my family listens to music from my computer, without having to listen to Jaws. I can also listen to the TV anywhere in the house, whether it is a TV station, video tape, or DVD. I hope you can get a transmitter, you'll have fun. Hi Shannon, All of the audio sources in my house, are connected to my computer The DVD player, the VCR, and the satellite receiver are all connected to my stereo amplifier. And the stereo amplifier is connected to the line-in jack on my computer soundcard. My FM transmitter is connected to the speaker jack on the same soundcard, so any sound that comes thru that soundcard, regardless of the source, is in return sent to the FM transmitter. I also have my microphone plugged into the same soundcard, so if for example, I am at my computer and the phone rings, and it is for someone else in the family, I can let them knowover one of the FM radios in the house without yelling.
