Re: PESO: Female Cormorant
Heya John, I echo what Paul said: it's a bit on the hot side, needs a bit darker rendering. Good shot otherwise! Thanks Godfrey, needs a little work then. I think my K10D is overexposing slightly, perhaps 1/3 of a stop, but the processing was too hot. I was trying to avoid darkening the image by much so as not to make the noise too obvious. Re: FA77 - going out of production?
Unsharp indeed but is very usable on my KX with BW like TriX if stopped down a bit. Even wide open it has provided quite nice pics. I didn't have time to test extensively on my D and even less so on my K10D. I will if possible. The utility of this lens is that on a K-line body it gives exactly in the viewfinder the same image as your eyes so it is very easy to use: one eye in the viewfinder, the other one checking what's happening around. 2007/2/12, Kostas Kavoussanakis [EMAIL PROTECTED]: On Sun, 11 Feb 2007, Peter Lacus wrote: It is not typical of the era, I am afraid. may I ask you why? Re: Today's heresy
From Cotty: I'm here. Pentax K register distance is 45.46mm Canon FD register distance is 42mm This means that to alter an FD lens to fit a K mount camera (without using an adapter containing an optical element to correct for infinity focus) you would have to remove over 3 and a half mil from the back of the FD lens flange. If you're going to use a 42mm threaded adapter, then add the thickness of the adapter to that. Might be problems in that there's not enough room on the back of the FD lens before problems start in terms of aperture ring etc. You may or may not have problems with the rear element of the lens not clearing the mirror. I don't have an FD to look at, but where there's a will, there's a way. I have some links on the bottom of this page that might be of further interest: http://www.cottysnaps.com/snaps/mods/details.htmlhttp://www.cottysnaps.com/snaps/mods/details.html It's a big job but as an engineering exercise, viable, if expensive. Of course, as a hobbyist, cost is not justifiable so go to it! I had a mode in mind that's more basic and only a trade-off in effort. How if I just modify the stops inside the lens mechanism and move the glass back. The scale isn't really important. And after all, it's only a Canon lens. :) Sincerely, Collin Brendemuehl http://www.brendemuehl.net http://evangelicalperspective.blogspot.com http://philosophyforchristians.blogspot.com He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose -- Jim Elliott -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: K10D service menu/focus system adjust
There are old strings in the frimware itselfand in the DSP output. Both show a 50/3200iso capability (I mean strings were thought for). I think they simply disabled 50/3200 iso. We/Pentax may unlock them. Any idea of the CPU/DSP architecture? ARM/Mips? Other one? I wasn't able to find any obvious indicators for the K10D. The firmware for my -DS has this in it: Softune REALOS/FR is Realtime OS for FR Family, based on micro-ITRON COPYRIGHT(C) FUJITSU LIMITED 1994-1999 Seems unlikely that they'd switch CPUs unless they had to for performance or cost reasons. -Cory -- * * Cory Papenfuss, Ph.D., PPSEL-IA * * Electrical Engineering* * Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University * * -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

On the way to my SW trip, I spent about two days in Yosemite. I discovered shooting it is rather difficult, as the best light is early morning and late afternoon. Not being an early morning person, my window of opportunity was pretty limited. In other words, two days was not enough -- some rocks are best late day and you can't be in all the places to shoot all those rocks at the same time late day. Also I hadn't been there in 30 years and spent a lot of time just revisiting things, and, well, I am also no AA. But enough caveats -- I rather like some of the straight on El Capitan photos I got. Adobe Camera Raw. Personally, I've tried several different sets of ACR calibrations for the *ist DS and K10D that people have posted here and elsewhere ... and all of them produced results as default starting points for color balance that were farther off the mark than just opening the DNG file and setting white balance with the eyedropper tool. Lightroom's white balance adjustment works even better. I don't think that calibration is a waste of time, however. I just haven't found anyone's calibration that works better than what is offered as a default. It's so easy to adjust color balances when dealing with RAW format data I don't know why there's so much fuss about it. G On Feb 12, 2007, at 8:06 AM, Jens Bladt wrote: What is ACR, Rob? The desk calendar is 8.27 X 3.74 printed on 80 lb Premium Paper Stock with a glossy finish wire bound. Images come out @ 3.7X2.5. The color compares very well to what I printed from the same files. Perhaps the FA* 2.8/80-200mm is not working right with the K10D? Perhaps changing leses many times, metering by manually by Green Button etc. did confuse the cameras or me, or the light perhaps changed betewwn switching camera bodies ? I have no idea. Anyway, today I did some new test shots - comparing the K10D and the *ist D, using two samples of the same Pentax lens: The old SMC Pentax-F 4-5.6 35-80mm. So, I put one of these lenses on both cameras and did a few test shots. I shot the same scenery twice -using the same shutterspeed, same settings (multi-segnment, WB, contrast, sharpness, saturation, ISO 200, RAW). And guess what? The results are quite surpirsing. It seems to me that the K10D in fact does a better job, dealing with contrast. The K10D shots are consistantly the most pleasing shots, despite of the dark scenery/bright sky. Such conditions are very common in our (northern) parts of the world (low sun). Very often our contrasty environment requires manual exposure corrections. It seems the K10D handeled the situation quite well. Much better than the *ist D. I am pleasantly surprised! Judge for your selves. Regarding exposure, I'll do som emore test tomorrow, evenly lit scenes (walls, grey card etc.) as well ad contraty ones, im order tio figure out if the meter is off or if the matrix metering is over reacting. Surely I can't live with this. When photographing a a scenery with a very bright sky (very common in the northern parts og the world) I must dial in MINUS CORRECTION, when using the K10D. This is the exact opposite of what I have done for the last 30 years! I could never get used to this. My K10D requires reversed backlight compensation. Surely that can't be right! It soulds to me like the metering is compensating the sky as if it was a backlit scene (overexposing to ensure sufficient exposure to the subject). This is what we call subject failure in the industry. I think you will find the meter is behaving normally, and that you will need to adjust your metering strategy for this scene type. Re: Three new Pentax DA star lenses: any knowledge?
Roman, well, guys from Nordic Digital (Photopoint)* will tell you exactly the same news as anyone in here MINUS rumors. What you wrote, is exactly what we all were told at Photokina 2006. Three lenses, will be intorduced '03 2007 and later. Want more? Look for a news from Tokina. BR, Margus *)our local Pentax representative Roman wrote: According to the local retailer and local representatives new lenses shall be on sale from March 2007, not 2008 or 2020 (I hope). These will be: • DA* 16-50 mm F2.8 ED AL [IF] • DA* 50-135 mm F2.8 ED [IF] • DA* 60-250 mm F4 ED [IF]. http://www.digital.pentax.co.jp/ja/lens/roadmap.pdf All HSM, and weather/dust resistant, to match K10D designs. Since march 2007 is right around the corner, I was wondering if some Pentax guys or testers had already played with these. Anyway, I'm not purchasing older 28-105mm lenses in anticipation of 16-50mm f2.8, or if there will be delay, I'm going to buy Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 in addition to my fisheye 10-17mm and Tamron tele zoom 70-300mm. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: FA77 - going out of production?
Hi Thibouille, Unsharp indeed but is very usable on my KX with BW like TriX if stopped down a bit. Even wide open it has provided quite nice pics. I didn't have time to test extensively on my D and even less so on my K10D. I will if possible. sharpness is rather subjective quality and personally I will gladly sacrifice some sharpness for better overall rendering. For example my A50/1.4 delivers sharper images (at least at wider apertures) than my M50/1.4 yet I much prefer M50/1.4 for its rendering (and partially also for the better focusing feel and build quality). Basically what most people perceive as sharpness is IMHO just higher local contrast. And since everything comes at a price, increasing the sharpness you effectively lose smooth tonal gradations. The utility of this lens is that on a K-line body it gives exactly in the viewfinder the same image as your eyes so it is very easy to use: one eye in the viewfinder, the other one checking what's happening around. the same apply to a combination of a MX and M50/1.4 and needless to say, I enjoy it immensely. RE: More Lightroom videos
I wasn't aware it where downloadable at the 19. I simply thought that date was a misunderstanding. This is good news. It will give me a bit more time getting familiar with the tools before I make my bird slideshow. The plan is to launch the show at a meeting at 05.03. Re: PESO: Adult Cormorant (repost)
Hi Dave They're both a little too blue/cool IMO. With a levels adjustment layer and individually working on the R,G B channels I came up with this (I hope you don't mind): http://www.arach.net.au/~savage/Misc/5582064-md_DSv.jpg Took your advice on levels aboard and adjusted a little: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5582064 http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5582064 http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5586922 I think they're getting their IMHO I also ran it through PS CS2's reduce noise filter then smart sharpened it some. I found Noise Ninja produces a better rendering to my eye, just an opinion. Thanks for the advice and constructive critique. RE: The need to manually set SR
Hi Jens If the camera can't read thje lens, the camera will ask you to dial in the correct focal length. This menu can't be accessed maually, says the instruction book, I believe. Regards . As soon as you attach an AF lens the camera sets automatically and the manual setting is greyed out in the menu. I've tried the Sigma 300 f/4 with 2x EX converter, results seem acceptable even though the camera believes I'm using a FA* 300 f/4.5, only time will tell :) John The information transmitted is intended only for the person to whom it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material.
